This old matchbook was given away many, many years ago at the Chick’s Golden “Do-Nuts” shop in Concord.

The legendary donut shop is located in the Park-N-Shop center on Willow Pass.

Have you been to Chick’s?

Sure did. My dad, a Concord Policeman Badge 22, would take us there. He also would visit them early in the mornings when they were cooking donuts.

Many years ago, are they still there?

Last time I saw their sign lit up it said…
Chicks __nuts
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go in or not!

Been there forever. They must be doing something right.

For many years, Chick’s was a great coffee and donut shop. The owner even donated leftover donuts to the needy about 4PM each day. Sadly, the place has changed. A few years ago, I went in for a couple of donuts and they were disgusting. The cooking oil was obviously old and used for oriental stir fry. I haven’t been back. When people cut corners and cheapen the product it stands out like a sore thumb!

This right here. Chick’s used to be the best anywhere around. I would say the last 8 years or so have been terrible. The gray haired man who owned it when I wa a kid was great. The food was great . It has been sold at least 7 times and now it’s just nasty. It’s so sad. They used to have the beat raspberry bars.

Still so mad that Hot Dog Palace is gone. They had the best cheese fries.

Yep! Used to walk by it when I walked to Mt Diablo, in the mid-70’s.

The current Chicks has a pretty good breakfast! Check it out…

Is it still there?

Oh yes. Chicks donuts.
Another great longtime Concord donut shop is Kings Donuts.

Many years ago, Jim Kelly and I frequently had lunch there; after sitting down, grumpy old Helen would bring us a newspaper, slap down a menu on the table and snarl “what’ll you have?” Back in those days, Chick’s ordered several copies of the Chronicle, for customers to read while enjoying their food. Nasty old, red-headed Helen was a delight to deal with, while the other waitress, Marge, was just as capable, but less “entertaining”. Both did an excellent job, always getting the orders right and deserving the tips they received. Eventually, the owner’s son took over the operation, then, meeting him and his wife on Catalina Island a few years back, he said they sold the business and had moved on. I still get in there maybe twice a year, just for the memory, but prefer the product and service at The Best Little Donut House, on East St. in Concord. Time marches on, as have Jim and Helen; Marge, I believe, remains extant, as am I.

I used to stop there around 6:30 AM on my way to work at Gaunts Machine/Crane shop at Broadway & Harrison to pick up a bakers dozen for the workers at the shop.
They did make some great donuts.

The name Chicks came from the first two owners Chuck and Dick. My Grandmother Isabel worked there for years, she was one of the early morning employees worked the counter and making donuts. Her sister Helen as The Old Goat mentioned worked there for years too Aunt Helen was always entertaining and a great lady.. The Barrilleaux family bought Chicks in the mid 60’s and then their son Paul took over in later years. I was born and raised in Concord, so many memories

The Old Goat April 21, 2022 - 2:08 PM - 2:08 PM

@Jamie
Thanks for filling in a couple blanks, and for the record, I wholeheartedly agree about “Aunt Helen”. She was always fun to interact with, yet all business. The one thing I can’t recall is the name of Paul’s father, another nice guy. In fact, everyone working there was always nice; they were a great example of how a business should be operated. And Paul’s wife, Linda, should also be mentioned as one of the best. And a real cutie to boot.

Ano April 21, 2022 - 9:08 PM - 9:08 PM

Can someone in their family show me how to make donuts that we

Ano April 21, 2022 - 9:12 PM - 9:12 PM

I think the best donut place around now is Allstar donuts by De LA Sall . Next is kings donuts

Jamie April 21, 2022 - 9:21 PM - 9:21 PM

Paul’s Dad was Jay, he passed in 2010. I bet you remember King Normans in the Park and Shop too.
