Walnut Creek City Council To Again Weigh Buffer Zone Around Planned Parenthood

The Walnut Creek City Council will again try taking up whether Planned Parenthood needs a buffer zone to protect employees and clients of the service.

Technical difficulties with the council’s Zoom link during the Nov. 16 meeting prevented people from weighing in online. Then-Mayor Kevin Wilk decided to postpone the matter.

Walnut Creek police received 42 calls for service at the Planned Parenthood facility on Oakland Blvd., between Jan. 1, 2020 and Nov. 5, 2021. Complaints included accusations of verbal and physical harassment and intimidation of patients and protestors blocking sidewalks. The city has also received reports of traffic accidents in the area related to distracted driving and pedestrians in the street.

At least four people have been arrested, one for going inside the clinic and threatening people. A security guard for pro-life group 40 Days for Life was arrested for allegedly pepper spraying people during a protest.

Both sides of the contentious issue have complained to the council, blaming the other for trouble at the site. California law guarantees a person’s right to enter a health care facility without obstruction, including for abortions.

A city staff report points out it’s “a crime to use force, threat of force, or physical obstruction to, or attempt to, injure, intimidate or interfere” with those working at a clinic.

Some California cities, such as San Francisco, Oakland, and Napa, have buffer zones further restricting protesters’ proximity to reproductive health care facilities. Some give patients and employees at least eight feet of personal space from protesters.

Other options the council could consider are opting to beef up police patrols in the area, allow construction of a fence and gate to keep protesters away, or add extra private security at the site.

The Walnut Creek City Council meets at 6 p.m. Jan. 18 at the council chamber, 1666 North Main Street, Walnut Creek. The meeting can also be seen on the city’s YouTube channel or at www.zoom.us (webinar ID: 845 5261 4447, passcode 107407.

Would the City of Walnut Creek create buffer zones if Antifa or BLM were protesting there?

I doubt it.

If Planned Parenthood has a problem with legal protestors, let them hire more security on their own dime.

Oh, please January 18, 2022 at 5:02 PM

Well, they get our tax money, so we would be paying anyways…

They aren’t legal protesters if they are harrassing and assaulting.

Bob January 18, 2022 at 3:45 PM

Only if we can get a buffer zone from the City Council

Ricardoh January 18, 2022 at 4:32 PM

I am not a supporter of abortions but think they should not be harassed. Get a life and do something. You are wasting your time.

Ano January 18, 2022 at 6:18 PM

These are women trying to obtain medical care and should never be harassed for doing so. Abortions are a medical decision between her and her doctor, NOT YOU! You have the right to not have an abortion but don’t try to impress your religious views on others. If they want your opinion they know where to find you.

Think about this. Some religions don’t believe in blood transfusions . Do you protest those people and try to force them to get one. No I didn’t think so.

Same with the vaccines. Your body , your choice.

@ Ano, I guess you don’t mind murdering babies, huh!? Do you also believe that trafficking children is ok, too? Where do you draw the line of decency if murdering an innocent child is condoned? Your kind is the reason CA and all the other liberal states are being destroyed!

Led January 18, 2022 at 10:56 PM

That’s not even the issue here. It’s whether people forfeit their right to freedom of speech and assembly just because they are on one side of a contentious issue.

Ano January 19, 2022 at 2:07 AM

Trafficking children and a woman having an abortion are two very separate things. A bag of cells needs a host to survive, the womb of a woman. Do not try and lump the two together. I draw the line of decency at not needing a host to survive.
On another note you as a man can not carry a baby , do not have a monthly cycle, and if you get raped you will not get pregnant so therefore you should have zero say in what women do with their bodies. If you were a woman you may choose differently if you were faced with an unwanted pregnancy. Religion has no place in medical decisions, end of story.

@ Ano……….. Comparing an abortion to a blood transfusion?
It is no wonder that you are pro death, you have no grip on reality.

ranchgirl January 19, 2022 at 7:59 AM

@jeffzimmerman You do realize that not ever person going into PP is there seeking an abortion, right? Actually, most aren’t. There is more to PP than that. Like STD testing and treatment, birth control, well-woman exams, cancer screening and prevention, hormone therapy, infertility services, and general health care.

“Bag of cells”

You need to catch up on the science. Like, the past three hundred years or so.

The Fearless Spectator January 18, 2022 at 8:31 PM

They should be contemplating creating a more effective buffer zone between Walnut Creek and Oakland.

Wow council is not getting the message even after they were blindsided by a violent mob of 80 blacks attacking Nordstrom.
Why the hell are they wasting their time on this?
What are they doing to keep black criminals out of the city?
The pro abortion activists are Saul Alinski marxists and use lies and smears to push their radical policies on the community and the buffer zone tactic has been reported as used in other cities as a media attention getting strategy.
Planned Parenthood murders children every day let’s not sugar coat the plight of the poor “abused “customers. Sad.

ranchgirl January 20, 2022 at 4:03 PM

Racist much?

Racist January 20, 2022 at 4:49 PM

Margaret Sanger founded Planned Parenthood to reduce the numbers of “inferior” races.

Ricardoh January 19, 2022 at 11:00 AM

If an abortion is within a certain time period it is better than having another neglected kid running around. We have more than we can handle now. If you think there are enough people to adopt all of the aborted babies forget it. There isn’t. I am against anything close to a late term abortion. I believe that is murder.

tiptoe January 19, 2022 at 11:09 AM

@jeff so according to your logic, throwing away a seed is killing a tree then right? Wrong, because that sounds ridiculous. Just as @ranchgirl said, many people who go to PP aren’t there to get an abortion. Please educate yourself.
