Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Born in 1929, King’s actual birthday is January 15 (which in 1929 fell on a Tuesday).

King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

How does one celebrate MLK day?
Just curious.

Just a thought- civil service or volunteer to help out at the food bank.

MLK said what he said with passion and conviction.

He spoke truths.

To celebrate his day, read his works.

Like one celebrate other days of importance, President’s Day, Memorial Day etc. Yes, I realize often those days are celebrated in a shallow way, stores have sales, people barbeque etc. However, that does not mean one should not remember and honor that person. When MLK was shot I was a young au pair from Denmark, it was my second year in the US, I remember the day vividly, I remember and often read the speech Robert F. Kennedy gave in Indianapolis, it was powerful, visionary, heartfelt and eloquent. Don’t hear many if any politician or public figure today speaking such powerful words.

@Hanne Jeppesen….”Don’t hear many if any politician or public figure today speaking such powerful words.”….That’s because the bevy of speech writers back then we’re more “visionary, heartfelt and eloquent”.

The speech Robert Kennedy made when MLK was shot, was not written or scripted, he only learned of the sad news moments before he was scheduled to appear, which makes it even more powerful.

“Even Dr. King’s assassination did not have the worldwide impact that George Floyd’s death did”
