Bay Area Food Banks Face Critical Volunteer Shortages During Omicron Surge

Five San Francisco Bay Area food banks have a critical shortage with volunteers and are reaching out to the public for assistance.

The food banks — Alameda County Community Food Bank, Food Bank of Contra Costa Solano, Redwood Empire Food Bank, San Francisco Marin Food Bank and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley — serve 12 Northern California counties.

Collectively, Bay Area food banks feed about a million people each month.

Additionally, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, Alameda County Community Food Bank and San Francisco Marin Food bank are reporting an increase in requests for home delivery of free groceries, as more people are forced to isolate due to exposure or illness related to the omicron variant.

Volunteer rates at food banks tend to be traditionally sloe between January and March after the holiday season, but this year’s drop was more significant as employers, schools and community reinsate stay-at-home policies, according to Diane Baker Hayward of Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.

It’s common sense to protect my friends’ and family’s health.

You’re telling me that the Biden trough isn’t full of free, taxpayer funded groceries on the 1st and 15th of every month? My taxes would indicate otherwise.

There’s a shortage in volunteer’s due to the virus yet Disneyland was packed as hell. Apparently the virus isn’t that worrisome when it comes to family fun.

Oh, please January 18, 2022 - 5:05 PM - 5:05 PM

It’s not really worrisome, period. Unless you are a crazy person that believes everything your overlords tell you, or you are SEVERELY immune-compromised in some way (even then, folks generally fare well).

Since the supervisors decided to rule with an Iron fist, I stopped putting in my 30 plus hours of volunteering as well I have diverted my monthly donation’s of $250.00 per month to another county that is more appreciative.
I just sent out a truck of clothing to a homeless shelter’s in Arizona and Texas today. it was a bit bitter sweet but at least I know they are finally going to be distributed.
I no longer buy anything in this county not even my gas. The good news is I will be leaving the bay area after living here for 63 plus years… yay
I have been a volunteer in Contra costa for 20 plus years. prior to that I volunteered in Almeda county, San Mateo county, San Francisco and Stanislas county’s. at 63 years old I am done in California and will focus my time in other states.

Totally agree with you. Commie Costa can suck wind as far as I am concerned. We are actively house hunting to get out of this hell hole.
