The Ygnacio Valley Library in Walnut Creek will reopen Feb. 7 after being closed since August 2020 to serve as a state-run COVID-19 testing site.

The Contra Costa County Library system decided to go ahead with a long-awaited parking lot upgrade project while the pandemic was keeping library users home. The project is scheduled to be finished by the time the branch reopens.

The upgraded lot will have two additional regular parking spaces, an additional disabled parking space, new curb ramps and new walkways. The project was jointly funded by the city of Walnut Creek and the county.

The branch’s new hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The branch will be closed Sundays.

Darn. Our book club met there monthly in the evening for years. We’ve been ZOOMing first Wednesday of the month during COVID. Downtown WC Library has been saving the books for us. The new YV schedule shows early close on Wednesdays

Finally. The greatest threat facing humanity today is: people don’t read books anymore.

We live in a dystopian hyper-reality where people trust their TVs more than they trust their own eyes.

Readers are leaders!
