Contra Costa Sheriff’s Deputies To Patrol Downtown Walnut Creek

by CLAYCORD.com

Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies will assist the Walnut Creek Police Department to deter concerted retail theft attacks like the one that struck the Broadway Plaza shopping mall last month.

Contra Costa deputy sheriffs will be conducting patrols in downtown Walnut Creek alongside police officers during the holidays to help prevent similar incidents.

“I made a personal commitment to the City of Walnut Creek to staff downtown Walnut Creek with deputy sheriffs during the holidays,” said Contra Costa Sheriff David Livingston. “Working with our partners at the Walnut Creek Police Department, this deployment from the Sheriff’s Office will help keep businesses, shoppers and residents safe.”

Not that I mind the extra security, because given where we are it is necessary, but does anyone else notice how law-abiding citizens are slowly but surely being turned into the prisoners? Crooks run free, but we are monitored by cops, drones, and security cameras.

Let’s not forget lockdowns, masking and vaccine requirements that apply to us but don’t apply to illegals streaming across the border. It’s upside-down.

Gititogether December 4, 2021 - 11:29 AM - 11:29 AM

More crystal-clear you could not be….

Kylie M December 4, 2021 - 11:55 AM - 11:55 AM

Prisoners are locked down, monitored, and given very specific rights while having most everything else taken away. How is having police patrolling an area that’s become higher in crime in recent times “turning us into prisoners”?

Why would you care if you’re doing nothing wrong if a driving-by officer glances at you (and everyone else) and keeps moving on doing whatever they’re doing? Is that glance taking away your rights as a citizen? Are you personally offended by being ensured you and others around you aren’t doing anything wrong thus keeping peace? Would you prefer they NOT glance at you, and in turn the person behind you that’s ready to steal your bag or do possibly do something else that could have been prevented by a quick glance?

I like drama, and we all know there are many people who frequent this site that need it to live, but c’mon … THIS is the hill you’re going to die on? “we’re being monitored by cops in a town that’s had thefts increased significantly in the last month” ??

Oh, then we get into the mask mandates conversation. I’ll point to Japan for any argument on “handling anything”.

But hey, I’m sure there will be a few people champing at the bit to make their ill-proven views heard. I’ll be more than happy to respond to logical comments, but the others – we’ll just have a good laugh and move on. I know how this place works. 😉

BORbeliever December 4, 2021 - 12:09 PM - 12:09 PM

@Kylie M, I’m not dying on this hill, I’m merely making a point. Perhaps you are not familiar with that concept?

Anyway, whatever. I guess we will soon go the way of the UK where citizens are monitored 24/7. There are some people, and apparently you are not among them, who do not wish to be monitored by cops, cameras, and drones all day, every day. Even if they aren’t criminals. Go figure.

Captain Bebops December 4, 2021 - 12:47 PM - 12:47 PM

Some folks might call this a version of “Stockhausen Syndrome”.

Captain Bebops December 4, 2021 - 5:53 PM - 5:53 PM

Oops, a little bit of my musical background crept in there which would be weird enough. I meant “Stockholm Syndrome”.

Bag-Puss December 6, 2021 - 9:07 AM - 9:07 AM

@BORbeliever look at the UK’s numbers on crime, we should be so lucky!

Maybe we could learn something and I can assure you people in England have way way way fewer restrictions than they do in the USA generally, especially Communist Contra Costa under the CCP (California Communist Party) led by Newsom!

kilo December 4, 2021 - 11:32 AM - 11:32 AM

You could put a cop on every corner and it won’t matter.

DA Becton won’t prosecute and even if she did AB109, Prop 47 and Prop 57 changed the laws to take all the punishment away. The would be just get another meaningless probation docket in addition to the other five or six they already have.

Repeal Prop 47 and put in a DA like Mary Knox who actually cares.

Sign from Above December 4, 2021 - 12:51 PM - 12:51 PM

@ Kilo

Agree on every point! Mary Knox for DA. She has a proven track record of doing everything Becton is failing to do (or doesn’t care to do). Clean the swamp starting in our own area! And, repeal the soft on crime garbage propositions.

That being said, Walnut Creek was targeted last time. This is a regional crime series and is very organized. Putting Sheriff’s Deputies in Walnut Creek will simply push the thugs to other areas. Look out Danville, Lafayette, Orinda, and San Ramon (three of which the Sheriff’s Department is responsible for)! You’re next! Then, the Sheriff can explain that. He’s simply placating to his affluent voter base. He wouldn’t be doing this if they hit a store in Antioch or San Pablo.

Nicmo December 4, 2021 - 7:00 PM - 7:00 PM

How about two trained German Shepards on each corner? East coast cities use dogs for security

amigo December 4, 2021 - 11:45 AM - 11:45 AM

That’s the way to do it, tell the looters there will be patrols in the Creek. Looters will just go somewhere else OR look at it as a challenge.

Aunt Barbara December 4, 2021 - 12:14 PM - 12:14 PM

Having flashing Police SuV’s parked at the Broadway Plaza does nothing but deter visitors from shopping. they are usually empty of an officer to boot and the crooks know this. The Sheriff has better things to do than drive around in circles.
It only works if you are Mayberry RFD..
Nordstrom needs to hire real security, not ones that fall asleep at the surveillance camera and dress like punks, so customers are eyeing them as criminals.

hanne jeppesen December 6, 2021 - 1:08 PM - 1:08 PM

Having security dressed as customers is the best way to catch thieves, not the grab and run, those are hard to catch because they are in and out very quickly. However, there is other stealing going on in stores especially big stores like Macy’s (my work place) or Nordstrom’s where a customer will go from department to department, they carry big shopping bags and go into the a dressing rooms with lots of clothing etc. to try on. Security dressed as a customer can discreetly follow them and when they have proof detain them. That kind of thieves often get caught, a sales associate will notice something suspecious, alert security and describe the person, security will follow them on video and also send one or two personal out in the store to follow them. These security personal blends in with a customer, a woman in her twenties, wearing jeans and a sweater, someone wearing active wear, Nike, knit cap etc.

Ancient Mariner December 4, 2021 - 1:39 PM - 1:39 PM

In the 2020 robbery / looting spree on Broadway Plaza, there were police just standing there and watching, with their SUVs parked in the middle of the street with the lights flashing. They weren’t even trying to arrest anybody.
Adding more police won’t do any good unless they enforce the law and arrest the criminals. Then the criminals will need to be prosecuted, too, another thing that’s not currently being done.

Schmee December 4, 2021 - 10:57 PM - 10:57 PM

Exactly. What is one cop gonna do against 80 people. Call the police same as a security guard would do. Waste of tax money.

Dr Jellyfinger December 5, 2021 - 7:56 AM - 7:56 AM

Lawman John Russel could do it… just put him out there in front of Nordstrom’s with a double barreled shotgun and he’ll handle the mob.
They’ll all wind up going back on home, hanging their heads in shame.

Jeff December 6, 2021 - 7:59 AM - 7:59 AM

Have the police do “something” and have Becton put them in jail for excessive use of force………………..no way. Much easier to just watch, go home, and eventually collect the pension, cops are smart. Get rid of Becton first.

diabloite December 6, 2021 - 12:13 PM - 12:13 PM

Absolutely. The Walnut Creek police are on film standing there watching looting, destruction of downtown, and doing nothing. I’ll never get that image or that concept out of my head. We might as well just go ahead and defund the police because we aren’t getting value for the ‘funding’ anyway. Hey, give me a great pension to stand around and observe criminals in action. Cush gig. Hopefully the sherriffs officers will think of themselves as law enforcement, and not just detached observers.

To Do List December 4, 2021 - 1:39 PM - 1:39 PM

I was there I think Thursday afternoon and there were lots of police and their cars, Broadway was pedestrian only, there were Christmas inflatables being set up, and one family with little kids looking at the fountain. Very surreal. I expected all clocks to start melting and the Loch Ness monster to stroll by but that did not happen.

Obamavirus December 4, 2021 - 3:34 PM - 3:34 PM

I haven’t heard yet that Diana has renounced her Marxist policy and will return to a law and order approach to prosecution
Did I miss it?
What did the BOS have to say?
Nothing…
How about the BOS hire a second DA for central county
Mary Knox seems like she wants to step up to the plate
If Mary Knox runs for the job next year I hope she realizes she will have to go over the vote with a fine tooth comb and not to concede without a full recount
I would like her to make sure that the vote is not a fraud like the Newsom recall where they actually claimed he received the exact same percentage of votes as in his general election in 2018 as if exactly zero democrats voted to remove him
LOL

Ricardoh December 4, 2021 - 4:54 PM - 4:54 PM

I will say it again. Organized looting is organizd crime. It should be punished as such.

RICO

Janus December 4, 2021 - 5:06 PM - 5:06 PM

So is this Livingston’s mea culpa for the accident release of the Walnut Creek’s prisoners?

Jeff December 6, 2021 - 8:01 AM - 8:01 AM

No. It’s lending a hand to WCPD and the sheriff does patrol unincorporated WC.

Pat December 4, 2021 - 9:36 PM - 9:36 PM

So why not Sun Valley Mall? The Brentwood shopping district, and others?

Ancient Mariner December 5, 2021 - 7:18 AM - 7:18 AM

Another good point, Pat!
These people are opportunistic – while all the police are at Broadway Plaza, the robbers will strike Target up the street, or Sunvalley Mall.
And when the excitement has worn off and the police are withdrawn (say, another year) they’ll be back attacking Broadway Plaza again.

The Fearless Spectator December 5, 2021 - 8:02 AM - 8:02 AM

This received national coverage, and Walnut Creek likely houses larger liberal campaign donors.

Torcofuel December 5, 2021 - 8:44 AM - 8:44 AM

The crooks know when and where cops will patrol and go to some other area to loot. It’s not rocket science to listen to the scanners to see where all the cops are and when and adjust the looting location.

Never found the Tiffany robbers that hit WC. Gone quiet on that one!

Plinko December 6, 2021 - 7:29 AM - 7:29 AM

The major of walnut creek is a reactionary imbecil.
Time to take out the garbage.

Jeff December 6, 2021 - 12:01 PM - 12:01 PM

When he caved into the Hall family he was finished, this is all correlated to Miles Hall, Black Lives Matter and the May 31, 2020 looting, all connected.
