Tolls On Bay Area’s Seven Bridges Set To Rise In 2022

The cost to travel over seven of the Bay Area’s bridges will increase by $1 on Jan. 1, 2022.

Regular tolls for two-axle cars and trucks and for motorcycles at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay, Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward bridges will rise to $7 from $6, according to the Bay Area Toll Authority.

Tolls for vehicles with three or more axles will also rise by $1.

The tolls will increase to $17 for three-axle vehicles, $22 for four-axle vehicles, $27 for five-axle vehicles, $32 for six-axle vehicles and $37 for vehicles with combinations of seven or more axles.

The toll increase at the region’s state-owned toll bridges is the second of three toll increases approved by the the Legislature in 2017 via state Senate Bill 595 and by voters through Regional Measure 3 in 2018.

The first increase went into effect in 2019, and the third will go into effect in 2025.

There is a legal challenge to Senate Bill 595 and Regional Measure 3 pending before the California Supreme Court, so the toll increase collected will be placed into an escrow account managed by an independent trustee until the litigation is resolved.

Revenue from the previous toll increase in 2019 is also being held in escrow, according to the Bay Area Toll Authority.

Must be nice for the Legislature to vote themselves another raise with the help of some very informed voters. NOT!

Let’s add insult to inflation.

Do not ask for whom the toll bills. It bills for thee.

LMAO!

They’re rubbing it in our faces now – two classes in America: Politicians and the Saps who pay for them (us). All government is theft.

Mike December 3, 2021 - 9:48 PM - 9:48 PM

In 2005, 4 axle vehicles, like a pickup pulling a trailer (boat or camper) cost $5 to cross the Benicia bridge.

It rose to $7, then $11, $17 within 10 years. Then $21 3-4 years ago.

That’s over 600% in 15 years…..

By 2035 it will be over $100 to cross.

T-rex December 3, 2021 - 4:47 PM - 4:47 PM

Well, Time to start taking my license plate off my car whenever I go over the bridge again. especially with the trailer.

Sancho Panza December 3, 2021 - 4:52 PM - 4:52 PM

It seems more economical to accrue a toll violation notice and receive a discount from BATA under their new ‘equity program’…

Badge1104 December 3, 2021 - 5:17 PM - 5:17 PM

They have eliminated all the toll taker jobs, saving all the salaries, it’s still increased the tolls. I really feel for those commuters who have to use the bridges and pay these tolls plus pay the super high gas prices now which some sorts of say might go to $7 a gallon next year

Chris December 3, 2021 - 6:30 PM - 6:30 PM

I’m guessing the toll increase should cover those that don’t work and place paper over their plates or remove them all together in the name of equity. Why should criminals, lowlifes, and the protected class have to pay to cross the bridge?

J to the C December 3, 2021 - 6:40 PM - 6:40 PM

Voter approved! Who the heck voted for a toll increase?!

Tsa December 3, 2021 - 9:59 PM - 9:59 PM

The same idiots who vote for the morons in Sacramento…

Jeff (the other one) December 3, 2021 - 6:46 PM - 6:46 PM

I view the toll as a user fee, and in general, if the money was used for the fee being collected (maintenance of said bridges) and not all the other phantom projects the money collected is to go to. What I find absurd is, people presumably voted for this (defies logic). For snicks, I looked up what some of the funding was to be used for, and one of the projects was the Silicon Valley BART. Take a gander at the timeline (https://www.vta.org/projects/bart-sv/phase-ii#accordion-when-will-construction-start-). Planning for this began in 2000 (as “alternative analysis), and environmental clearance was from 2004 to 2018 (14 years!), with completion of construction in 2028. All this at the same time they are (not) building the high speed (meaning higher than if you walk briskly) train from bumble f all the way to nowhere.

For “equity,” I think the EV/carpool lane discount should be removed.

Glen223 December 3, 2021 - 7:13 PM - 7:13 PM

Tolls going up.
Toll evasion fines going down.
DAs not prosecuting offenders.
Felonies being reduced to misdemeanors.

California and this country are circling the drain.

Circling? It’s been IN the sewer for a while now. Credit the idiots running this state and the fools who voted for the scum.

Isn’t this where someone usually posts “fix the damn roads”?
Because fix the damn roads.

The Wizard December 3, 2021 - 11:24 PM - 11:24 PM

Fix those damn potholes.

Kauai Mike December 4, 2021 - 4:38 AM - 4:38 AM

I meant to say it, ‘fix the pot holes!’

ON DA December 4, 2021 - 4:41 AM - 4:41 AM

Yes raising the toll from $7 to $6 is fine by me.

Ricardoh December 4, 2021 - 7:04 AM - 7:04 AM

Organized theft is organized crime and should be charged that way.

Cautiously Informed December 4, 2021 - 8:16 AM - 8:16 AM

The only difference between the common career street criminal and a California democrat politician is that the politician wears nicer cloths and is more adept at lying.

Leeland December 4, 2021 - 7:43 AM - 7:43 AM

Whatever happened to the bridge tolls being used to pay for the construction of said bridges and then would go away? Besides, record setting gas prices means more gas tax being collected which is supposed to pay for road and bridge maintenance. I’m not the smartest guy around, but something don’t add up.

Pepe December 4, 2021 - 8:11 AM - 8:11 AM

The liberal voters in this state love new taxes and higher tolls because they believe the liberal politicians without question, no matter how many times they are lied to. No matter how bad their lives get in this state their simple thinking will never allow them to use logic or fact when voting.
Look at the middle-class working man for example, he still believes the democrats are working for him even though his standard of living goes down because of higher taxes and higher cost of living. It’s a mental thing

Cautiously Informed December 4, 2021 - 8:12 AM - 8:12 AM

As I posted previously, the state promised that tolls for each bridge would end when the bridge gets payed off. Now, the bridge tolls, taxes, fees, and all the other ways that the democrat state government takes our money is done to fund their personal career promoting agendas.

Judge Roy Bean December 4, 2021 - 8:33 AM - 8:33 AM

Fees and Tax with no accountability

The Fearless Spectator December 5, 2021 - 2:31 PM - 2:31 PM

We better get Buttegeig to work on this. After all, he says bridges are racist so it seems to me tolls must be also.

Torcofuel December 6, 2021 - 7:40 AM - 7:40 AM

Glad we rarely travel over the high priced toll bridges, but when we have to we make sure our rear plate is always obscured when passing thru toll tag reader lane cameras.
