Walnut Creek Police today arrested a man suspected of starting a series of small fires at a variety of city locations throughout the day today.

27-year-old Oscar Aguilar-Campos was detained, arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility, according to police.

The first 911 calls came shortly after 5:00 a.m. when Walnut Creek Police and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Con Fire) responded to three separate dumpsters on fire in the downtown corridor over the period of one hour. They were quickly extinguished, and no witnesses or suspects were located.

Around 11:40 this morning, WCPD received a report of fabric on fire near the Lesher Center for the Arts. Con Fire quickly put that fire out, and within minutes, WCPD received multiple calls of additional small fires, including one inside the Walnut Creek Library. Four small fires had been set inside the library, two in trash cans, one on a chair, and one involving a book. The library was evacuated, and no one was hurt. The library reopened around 2:30 this afternoon.

WCPD located a witness who was able to give officers a description of the suspect. Patrol and plain clothes officers searching the area found Aguilar-Campos walking downtown. Con Fire’s arson investigators are working closely with WCPD and will be presenting this case to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

If anyone has any information about any of these fires, please contact the Walnut Creek Police Department at 925-943-5844.

I believe the Go-To place in Walnut Creek is Nordstrom. They’ll leave the doors open for you and likely have very nice lighters available for pick-up.

BOOYAH! December 2, 2021 - 6:41 PM - 6:41 PM

Oh God, don’t give this to Becton …

Martinezmike December 2, 2021 - 6:50 PM - 6:50 PM

Looks alot like someone wasting water.

….let me guess…. One of the homeless transient men that have now come to Walnut Creek because they’ve heard of Walnut Creek Sunday $200,000 towards homeless. The woke city of Walnut Creek is now enjoying all the features that all liberally run ‘woke’ cities feature: Street people/ homeless and crime, and livability that is not so good anymore.

Meant to say funding not Sunday.

Plinko December 2, 2021 - 9:30 PM - 9:30 PM

I hear you badge. Wc has become a dumpster fire with the current mayor. He is completely reactionary and has no clue on how to run a city.

Jeff December 3, 2021 - 8:20 AM - 8:20 AM

It was so funny to see The Mayor & Becton turn pro-police during their special Wednesday morning meeting. I’ve called The Mayor a moron to his face.

.
“Dumpster” fires?
.
What is pictured is not a dumpster. It’s a Porta-potty on the North Main side of City Hall.
.
… is Claycord staff being “punny”? Hahaha!

Watch this mentally ill man be let off with a slap on the wrist, and then let loose on the streets again. Where he will almost assuredly set more fires, one which may well kill one or more people. Betcha. That’s how it works these days.

Kauai Mike December 3, 2021 - 3:03 AM - 3:03 AM

Keep letting them in Brandon ….

williekillagain December 3, 2021 - 5:44 AM - 5:44 AM

No a porta potty is a dumpster they had it right,it’s a lumpster dumpster.

williekillagain December 3, 2021 - 6:08 AM - 6:08 AM

No a porta potty is a dumpster they had it right,it’s a lumpster dumpster. and the only reason the fire started is He had some bad gas so he was only trying to be polite and lit a match to knock the stink down He would have courtesy flushed instead but as we all know can’t flush a porta potty . He will be out by lunch time like the 3 from the big WC snatch & grab block party . They are all out on their promise not to get caught again

Snappy97 December 3, 2021 - 7:13 AM - 7:13 AM

Ugh, well, too bad they can’t put trackers on them. That’s a lot of small fires to start, hopefully not practice for him.

Meezy December 3, 2021 - 7:45 AM - 7:45 AM

I’m curious what book it was…

WC Resident December 3, 2021 - 9:19 AM - 9:19 AM

I too wondered what book it was. As the guy is a certified Stable Genius I doubt he could handle anything as thick as “The Anarchist Cookbook.”

WC December 3, 2021 - 7:48 AM - 7:48 AM

Is the guy even a legal resident?

Dihchtfor December 3, 2021 - 6:44 PM - 6:44 PM

Oh yeah, I get it! Anyone with a Hispanic name should immediately be assumed to be illegal! So clever and insightful of you

Dr Jellyfinger December 4, 2021 - 7:37 PM - 7:37 PM

@ Dihchtfor ~ Way to jump to conclusions there D…. it wasn’t an accusation, it was just a question.

If I jump to the conclusion that you are a wild eyed, knee jerk liberal, just because you flew off the handle at WC, well…. I could be wrong too
(but I doubt it!).

Badge1104 December 3, 2021 - 8:40 AM - 8:40 AM

It’s funny how all the liberal politicians are now acting outraged at what’s going on. But it was them with their policies that have caused it all in the first place. But per their character, their phony reaction will only be temporary. I bet they’re letting the crooks out of the back door at the same time to repeat

Aunt Barbara December 3, 2021 - 12:11 PM - 12:11 PM

Mayor an City Council are all locked up in City Hall trembling in their
crocks. Covid lock down is over and they are still locked up and appointment only to see Oz and the winged monkeys…

chuckie the troll December 3, 2021 - 11:36 AM - 11:36 AM

If he burns less than $950 worth of something, is it still a crime? And will the BAAQMD fine this guy for an illegal burn?

Dr Jellyfinger December 3, 2021 - 4:02 PM - 4:02 PM

Those things could use a window… a little bit of ventilation helps.

Aaron December 3, 2021 - 8:24 PM - 8:24 PM

Burning any property that isn’t yours is felony arson I think. Doesn’t matter how little $$$ it’s worth
