A California Condor has been spotted on Mount Diablo for the first time in over 100 years, according to Save Mount Diablo.
The “Pinnacles Condor 828” was recorded visiting Contra Costa County in both August and September.
“Many of us have waited our whole life for this kind of great news,” said Land Conservation Director Seth Adams. “The Diablo Range is a mountain lion, golden eagle, California condor wildlife corridor freeway—they all follow major undeveloped open space corridors, and that’s exactly what the Diablo Range is,” Adams said.
They are expecting more California condors to return to the Diablo area in the near future.
AWESOME!! …. more please!
Great news. I can’t wait to seeing it soar above.
Finely some good news
#28 In red under it’s wings. He must be a Buster Posey fan.
They have a wingspan up to 11 feet–WOW!!!!
Great can wait to go hunting for it
Beautiful. We’ll be on the lookout!
Magnificent! What a beautiful bird…
How Wonderful!
Great news. I hope to see 828 someday soon.
This is the best Claycord, the best!
Fantastic but we need a earlier warning.
Fantastic!
It is good news! It’s also indication that the ecosystem is not that bad off, as we’re constantly being told. (So we support ridiculously expensive government spending)
Consider that it is because of the environmental protections that we now have in place that the condor has indeed returned.
So very exciting! I’d never thought that they would venture into “our backyard” in my lifetime. Thrilling news.
Saw some before heading to work in Pacheco!! They were in a group of four I thought they were turkeys at first LOL
@ Pacheco…… you saw Turkey Vultures
Those were turkey cultures. Not condors.
I saw one pecking for food outside of Starbucks.
Condors making a comeback …. cool.
Now if we can just start seeing some frogs & toads again I’d be less worried about the environment.
No frogs or toads. Our plague is invisible
But the tiny tree frogs (spring peepers) are doing a-ok.
Pretty strange that they are doing well when the bullfrogs and toads are all but gone…. but this thread is about big bird & I digress…… sorry.
Wow! That’s awesome. Great to hear something so positive!
We lost the 909, which was a regular in our skies, a couple years ago. I’ll take an 828 as a suitable replacement.
So the “First Time In 100 Years” headline is incorrect?
828 does not have the firepower of the 909, but it is just as pretty in the sky.
Spotted on Mount Diablo for the first time in over 100 years
The 909 was a different kind of bird … a war bird … B-17G to be exact.
LoL! I thought maybe all the condors were tagged and those were ID numbers.
Wow – some really good news at last!
I’m looking forward to seeing this bird, and more of them.
Word word word
That’s a real ugly bird, but the homeless better watch out when that one comes pecking around. Might help clean up the streets.
The brought a big burst of joy to my heart and a big smile to my face. So good!
On the brink of extinction, all birds in the wild were captured and put into a breeding program that expanded their numbers and have been slowly released back into the wild. Coming this far north is the most wonderful news I’ve heard in years! There is some hope for humanity after all.
The Immaculate Conception
A study at the San Diego Zoo shows the California Condor can give birth from unfertilized eggs, without a male.
I was thrilled to have a family of kites move into the neighborhood! These past few years, watching them float and flirt and dance on the wind above the tall evergreen trees is a reward given to us for slowing things down around here.
Imagine the possibility of being able to catch even a glimpse of a family of condors!
The kites moved into my area tall trees numerous times for a short time until the environmentally protected crows beat them up and chased them away.
@Tired Californian: Turkey cultures? I have suspected that “auto-correct” is a tiny elf living inside our devices who wants to do good, but is, in fact, very drunk.
There is a reson that they were almost instinct, they are stupid birds that can not take care of themselves.
No species should be coddled and spoon fed like the Condor’s have been, what a drain on resources.
Let the damn things die in peace.
Fun fact 828 is a female which is a plus also I’d think, also I was not to sure on the difference between the vulture and the condor but one key difference l noticed is that the California Condors under wings has white on it where the turkey vultures entire wing color is dark. So that is the key lookout
