paranoid pablito somewhere in the first five, maybe not; I’ll settle for 18th!

Rook reports: First up, A Thief of Time, Tony Hillerman,1988. The title refers to those who are basically grave robbers. In this case, Anasazi items from a southwest tribe that vanished. Leaphorn and Chee are working from different angles. Murder is one of them and Anasazi relic hunters is the other. Hillerman is always a good read, especially for those who enjoy murder mysteries.

Next up, Cemetery Road, Greg Iles, 2019. Chapter 1 is all of 3 very short paragraphs and sets the tone for the story. Murders and sex galore would be a more accurate title. Toss in greed, corruption, and the rest of that which leads to it and you have a long story. What did surprise me was that in spite of all that this was not also as full of foul language that is so common in our modern stories. Not my cup of tea but I did finish it.

Janus October 22, 2021 at 10:18 PM

Hillerman, Special Friend of the Dineh, is one of my favorite authors.

There is nothing worse than finding an author that you like and then finding out that they are deceased.

Tolkien, Ambrose, Robert P, Parker, Clancy, Zelazny.. I guess it happens to all of us.

Hi, Dorothy! I always read your book coverages with pen in hand so as to take notes! Thank you for so many good tips!

Many years ago, I read James Frazier’s “Cold Mountain”. Now I am reading his equally engrossing “Thirteen Moons”…. non-fiction but historically accurate re the Nations’ removal and especially the lawlessness in the Appalachian Mountains during those times. He has written 4 more books, which I do plan to read after I switch off to something “frothy” or humorous for my next few.

Dorothy October 23, 2021 at 10:42 AM

Janus, I miss my favorites too. After I finish the last of my Hillerman books I am going to start on series by Elswyth Thane. She was the first serial writer I ever read way back when and still one of my favorite sets.

Antler, I’ll try one of the ones you mention but I am basically a fiction/Sci Fi/fantasy reader. I do read non-fiction from time to time.

Antler October 23, 2021 at 12:22 PM

Stupid mistake on my part!
“Thirteen Moons” is definitely FICTION (but historically accurate)!

Dorothy October 23, 2021 at 4:24 PM

OK Antler, I’ll look for Thirteen Moons.

“Cleared for straight-in approach! Do you request foamed runway?”

Dr Jellyfinger October 23, 2021 at 8:30 AM

Sounds like sexy talk…..

Antler October 23, 2021 at 7:55 PM

paranoid pablito,
I feel embarrassed because I intended nothing like what Dr. Jellyfinger suggested.
I was playing pilot to control tower because of the forecast weather pattern we have right now.

Dr Jellyfinger October 23, 2021 at 11:33 PM

Antler! Don’t be embarrassed… everybody knows it’s just my perverted sense of humor & has nothing to do with your virtue.
I’m sure we all know better…. (but I just could not resist)

paranoid pablito October 24, 2021 at 8:41 AM

We’re all friends here, just having a laugh…

If you like plants in pots especially if you can hang the pot or pots my favorite is tuberous begonias. They start to bloom at the beginning of summer and are still going now. The flowers last the whole time. It is not like they drop flowers and get new ones. In winter they die back to nothing but will be back the next year. The flowers are different shapes and colors. I happen to have mine on a drip system so they get watered regularly. The pot comes with a place to retain water below the pot. If you plant them, plant a bunch.

People driving on Alberta, SLOW DOWN, a game just ended and you just nearly ran us over in a lighted crosswalk!!!! And we were holding flashlights!!!

nytemuvr October 24, 2021 at 1:20 AM

@Anon…. Maybe put a little pep in your step and don’t forget to look both ways before crossing…just sayin’.

Cellophane October 23, 2021 at 11:38 AM

keeping an eye on the barometer.

It’s falling, but oh so slowly.

I really looking forward to some serious rain.

The Masked Poster October 23, 2021 at 4:05 PM

Forecast for tomorrow, 10/24, calls for 3.5 inches of rain, which I’d call SERIOUS rain, wouldn’t you? That’s monsoon kinda rain, and sure to cause some serious flooding around the Claycord area, and mudslides in the fire areas. The upside being that most of the current fires will get doused.

Ricardoh October 23, 2021 at 11:46 AM

Just read the story of our next rocket to the moon. Everything was going good until I read they are sending this rocket to the moon so they can be ready in the next rocket to the moon to send a woman and a person of color. I don’t care who they send up to the moon but to state this a goal is beyond dumb. How about a goal of collecting the most possible data. These trips are not for social engineering. Is everything about race and gender now? How about a Black man who thinks he is a woman. That should do it.

The Fearless Spectator October 23, 2021 at 7:53 PM

Don’t forget the special flight suits designed to accommodate the gender neutral.
Everything is about race and gender……..for now. For example that tranny rapist in that high school back east strikes, the school board quietly transfers the predator to another school and deny it happened. Don’t want to give the trans people a black mark on their record, so to speak.
Ultimately, there are criminals, and non-criminals, irrespective of gender identity or race. Once politicians realize they are better off serving workers instead of wokers, this will be better understood.

nytemuvr October 24, 2021 at 1:07 AM

It’s “affirmative action” taken to the extreme, who all remembers how well that worked out?

Dr Jellyfinger October 24, 2021 at 4:48 AM

If we’re voting I say we send Whoopi Goldberg.
A one way ticket.

Bob October 23, 2021 at 2:31 PM

Do people in area code 925 have to start 10 digit dialing tomorrow?

Antler October 23, 2021 at 8:00 PM

Bob, yes we do. But I have discovered that both my land phone and my cell phone have been doing that automatically. So you might want to check that before going to all the trouble of revising devices?

WC Resident October 23, 2021 at 11:12 PM

Yes though unfortunately there has been very little news coverage.

Expect a bunch of stuff that has been dialing using 7-digits to break.

There were 82 area codes in the USA that allowed 7-digit dialing for calls within the area code and also allowed 988 as a central office prefix. All 82 area codes are switching to mandatory 10-digit dialing on Sunday.

The goal is to free up 988 so it can be dialed like 911 except it reaches a suicide prevention hotline.

Details are at

A press release went out this past week.

Dr Jellyfinger October 24, 2021 at 4:55 AM

The atmospheric river woke me up…. pretty noisy wind gusts and heavy rain started in about 4:15 AM.

Ricardoh October 24, 2021 at 3:04 PM

I woke up at 4:15 also to go to the head. Couldn’t hear the storm.

Simonpure October 24, 2021 at 11:18 AM

Cellophane October 24, 2021 at 4:30 PM

Numerous reports of flooding showing up all over the area.

Sewer lines haven’t been cleaned in months.

3+ inches of rain.

Soil not taking any more water.

I so dearly wish we could capture all this water instead of letting it run into the ocean.

The Masked Poster October 24, 2021 at 8:25 PM

As rain flows to the oceans, it evaporates, creating clouds, which in turn produce rain, which flows to the oceans, etc. A continuous recycling program.

Antler October 26, 2021 at 4:17 AM

Another book title for you:

“We Were Liars”
by E. Lockhart

The most poignant, intricate, unique psychological novel imaginable.
Written in 1918.
