Bay Area Water Conservation Numbers Outpace Most Other Regions In State

The Bay Area continues to outperform much of the state in terms of water conservation, according to new numbers released Tuesday by the State Water Resources Control Board.

According to water conservation reports for August, the Bay Area achieved a 9.9 percent reduction in water use, while the North Coast’s reduction was 18.3 percent, the Central Coast’s was 5.2 percent and the South Coast region reported a 3.1 percent reduction.

During the same period, statewide water consumption dropped 5 percent compared to August 2020, nearly double the conservation total for July.

The cumulative reduction for July and August was 3.5 percent, well below the 15 percent reduction called for by Gov. Gavin Newsom as a response to the state’s historic and ongoing drought, according to the Water Board’s data.

Still, water officials expressed optimism that the numbers appear to be trending in the right direction.

“We’re not surprised that the goal has yet to be achieved since it takes time for the messaging to reach a critical mass and for people to put conservation actions in to practice,” said Marielle Pinheiro, a data specialist with the Water Board’s Office of Research, Planning and Performance.

Instead of forcing people to use less water, how about supplying more water,

Just like with Covid, the numbers simply don’t add up.

Every resident must reduce water consumption by 15% or we’ll run out of water.

But let’s add 20% or more new homes.

Refuse water to farmers who feed our republic.

Drain reservoirs when there is no chance of flooding.

Refuse to build more dams or or capture more water from run offs.

Refuse to build desalination plants.

Make the people suffer.

Control the people.

Same old story.

Same old control mechanisms.

Same citizens buy the BS story.

Also, how about all of the bottled water companies based here? Using California water – putting it in PLASTIC bottles and selling it back to us. Then average people are told they have to cut back on their water use and they just say, “Duh… ok” .

Californians have been told/required/mandated to conserve water for years – at a certain point an individual/household achieve maximum conservation and there just isn’t room to conserve anymore.

… with exceptional drought and drastic water conservation measures why isn’t Newsom putting a moratorium on new housing starts? EBMUD refused approval of a housing plan in Danville because of a lack of water.. good for them!

I’ve turned off our lawn sprinklers now that the rainy season has begun. With rain predicted for every day of the next week, why waste water on a wet landscape?

I believe San Diego is swimming in water due to their desalinization plant.

… put a moratorium on al the new housing starts – that we will have to ration for…
