Loved that place.
Was very sorry when it closed.

PC July 28, 2021 at 4:24 PM

They were the very best around!

Martinezmike July 28, 2021 at 6:42 PM

Yep. I never cared for their square pizza

Schmee July 28, 2021 at 4:29 PM

I wonder what the CBS refers to on the map of the corners

Dr. Jellyfinger July 28, 2021 at 4:54 PM

Didn’t there used to be a Colchico’s Liquor tore at 4 corners?

CBS was kind of like Lowe’s. They sold appliances
and more. I recall my parents buying a freezer there.

Dr. Jellyfinger—

Yes there was a Colchico’s Liquor Store in the
shopping center west of 4-Corners Pizza.
Dan Colchico was a local celebrity who who went
to Mt. Diablo High, DVC and San Jose State. He
played defensive end for the 49ers in the 60’s
and ended his career with the New Orleans
Saints. He had a lot of 49er memorabilia hanging
on the walls. A cool place to visit even if you weren’t
old enough to drink.

Check the phone number.
Mulberry 5-9903

Real Italian Food “made” by Real Italians is a unicorn item around here unless you get invited to a family home. One of the reasons I go back the New York once in a while.

Don’t forget that Chef Boyardee was a real Italian.
You don’t need to go back to New York to savor
his Italian cooking.

Dear Claycord; I really enjoyed these ‘memory Lane’ features.
When I see the phone number written down as MU 5 —— it made me remember that’s how we used to describe our phone number. MU, by the way, stood for Mulberry. Our phone number started with that when I was a kid.

Shoulda Coulda July 28, 2021 at 6:59 PM

Badge 1104–

The prefix for our phone number was Y E.
The first person to identify what that stood
for gets a free pizza from 4-Corners Pizza.
(Good luck collecting your prize).

Yellowstone – that’s what we were.

unclebrad & Ancient Mariner—

Great job!
Two correct answers!!
Now for a playoff to see who is champ.

Identify the old local prefixes—

First with the most answers wins!

unclebrad July 29, 2021 at 7:26 AM

ya got me there.

BTW, martinez was 228, right? what did that stand for?

Shoulda Coulda July 29, 2021 at 12:25 PM

My mother-in-law who is a longtime Martinez
resident said the phone prefix she had was
BE for Beacon.

Anonymous July 28, 2021 at 5:19 PM

When did they close? I moved here in 1980 and don’t remember them.

Shoulda Coulda July 28, 2021 at 6:54 PM

I know they were still open in the mid 70’s.
I worked with a guy who was dating one of
the owner’s daughters. The pizza was good.
Everyone knew about 4-Corners Pizza.

Nicholas Franks July 28, 2021 at 6:10 PM

Loved that place!

Martinezmike July 28, 2021 at 6:51 PM

I may be wrong, but I think suds and soft drinks means you could also get a bath there.

PESFG July 28, 2021 at 7:10 PM

I know this is off topic but yesterday I drove down Monument Blvd between 12:00-12:30 and there were 2 fire trucks and police officers at the corner of Virginia Lane and Monument Blvd and it seemed that they had Virginia Lane closed to traffic. That area seems to be getting worse every year.

BOOYAH! July 28, 2021 at 8:06 PM

4 Corners pizza was the first pizza I ever had. My folks drove us over from the Yellowstone area.

RA July 28, 2021 at 9:20 PM

Remember my grandfather taking us there as a kid in the 70’s. They had a window by the front door where we would watch the pizza makers toss the dough in the air.

BOOYAH! July 28, 2021 at 9:39 PM

Oh, and didn’t Charlie Kruger take over Colchicos liquor next to TG&Y?

Shoulda Coulda July 28, 2021 at 11:05 PM

Charlie Krueger opened Kruegers Liquors in 1975
on Clayton Rd. He operated the store along with his
wife until 1989. Mr. Krueger passed away in February
of this year.

OverWhelmed July 29, 2021 at 5:52 AM

TGY was on clayton Rd. Ben Franklins took that building over. Colchicos was on oak grove road at the corner of monument and oak grove. At least that is what i remember. We used to go to TGY for yarn and such.

prairiegirl July 29, 2021 at 7:25 AM

CL = Clearwater ?

Shoulda Coulda July 29, 2021 at 11:58 AM

In 1957 the local phone prefixes were-

CL for Clifford in Orinda.
AT for Atlantic in Lafayette.
DR for Drake in Moraga.
VE for Vernon in Danville.
YE for Yellowstone in Walnut Creek.
MU for Mulberry in Concord.

mohairs July 29, 2021 at 11:56 AM

Peter Colicchia was living in Chico and passed away earlier this year:

Shoulda Coulda July 29, 2021 at 12:47 PM

Thank you for posting the link.
I never knew that Mr. Colicchia opened the Sorrento
Restaurant in Walnut Creek after selling 4-Corners Pizza.
Oh the things you can learn on Claycord!!

redrazor July 29, 2021 at 12:03 PM

CL was Clifford (Lafayette and Orinda) …. AT was Atlantic (Lafayette) … Not sure about DR or VE (??)

jose July 29, 2021 at 1:20 PM

There used to be an Italian place called Paisano’s on the other corner. Some guy name Rocko used to run it……excellant pizza and other foods.
