The state’s grid operator has called for afternoon and evening energy conservation throughout California as one way to help the supply of power stay ahead of demand.
The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) has issued the Flex Alert for today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The grid operator forecasts an increase in electricity demand, primarily from air conditioning use, due to the heat wave.

In recent years DEMs running this state have repeatedly had demonstrated to them a need for peaker power generation plants. Like ones we used to have. before state legislature and CPUC decided to be green and eliminate them.
YET, when a crisis comes up, those in power fall all over themselves and declare a state of emergency allowing use of portable power generation. Eagerly waiving usual red tape and multiple levels of paperclip warrior bureaucracy to allow their use even if generation equipment exceeds CA pollution regulations.
Where’s the green in that ?

I always carry a rolled up solar panel for just such occasions.
No maniacal laughter however.
For those of us who are retired and home most of every day, it’s hardly any trouble to use our water and energy intensive appliances early n the day. That means more power available for career folks and parents of little children to take care of cleaning and cooking chores when they get home in the late afternoons.
Also, our home is insulated extremely well, and there are large trees shading the roof. All that is an enormous help in keeping utility bills low. Plus, if we cool the house well at night and then leave curtains drawn, less heat can come by osmosis through the double panes. Thanks to that, our A/C units (set at 74° for health reasons) do not even come on until almost 2p….. not even when the temperature goes as high as it did yesterday and today.
Today, I added crushed Ice to the water in the birdbaths a few times. Also, I let the hummingbirds play in cool hose spray (well water); they are not one bit afraid of me even though I’m the one holding the hose pointed upward….. delightful!

My husband and I have lived in (and improved) this same house (originally $23,000.00……. yes, 23 thousand!) for 56 years. And yes, at that time with our three little children, we could hardly pay the mortgage!
Because it takes electricity to power a well’s pump pulling the water up from almost 300 feet, no one’s well water is free! Our well water is for irrigation, pressure washing as necessary, and bird bath purposes. The house itself uses water district-piped water ONLY).
My husband and I both worked very full, demanding careers….. saved and invested conservatively when possible … and eventually were able to start paying down the premium on our house mortgage.

Thank you for filling in more info on the nicknames given to the various generations, Gittyup. Yes, I was born within the “Silent Generation” timeframe (though another name…. see below… was the “Lucky Few”, and I remember people just referring to us as “War Babies”

So the only point I’m trying to make is that you have had a lifetime to accrue the needed assets to live the way you do. In 2021 it is almost impossible for young adults to set themselves up the way previous generations were able to. Now they want to cut the electric. You being set up and all literally only helps yourself. (which is great for you) but I would appreciate it if you didn’t act like any of this is normal or should be normal. This is a failure of the state and the monopolies who control them. Sorry, respect.
Antler: Wikipedia’s article “Generation” provides names and dates for these generations and you are missing Millennials 1981 – 1996 and some others. However, what this article does not go into, or I missed it, is the debate over baby-boomers. The date 1955 is very important with baby boomers born before then more influenced by JFK and Vietnam while those after grew up with the cynicism of living through Watergate and some bad economic times.

Sam, I’m thankful to have lived through many types of economic times. Adapting to different careers and working hard paid off for our family in a great many ways. Our first home was in Clayton Valley Highlands… brand new 1,400 sq ft for $16,000 …. so thankful we qualified for a GI loan. But still we had to feed our family of 5 (3 babies/toddlers) on $10 per week in order to make the mortgage payments! I asked my mother please to send me copies of all her WW2 recipes, and that is exactly how we got by. To this day, all of us love such things as Spam, chipped beef on toast, tuna casserole, and breakfast menu for supper. No soft drinks…. no alcohol (except for Officer’s Club events at NAS Alameda) ….. no ice cream (except for a birthday),…. just little things like that!
Ditching the “poor me” attitude re WHATEVER ones circumstances is the best path to take…. no matter how steep.
If your water and power concerns prompt you to advocate for MANY more desalination plants and also for tidal generators constructed deep under the inlets to our Bays up and down CA’s coastline ….. then we definitely are on the same page.
Also, it is encouraging that increasing numbers of recyclable battery cells for storing wind, solar, and tidal energy are being installed.
I am 100% for desalination and any and all (affordable) electricity options. I am also a fan of spam an living within my means. The state of California has not held up their end of the bargain and I refuse to accept the sub par living conditions created by their mismanagement. Thank you for your service. If I remember correctly, it was “environmentalists” who got in the way. Now we run short on water and power. Unacceptable.

Oops, To Do List. I forgot to comment that the Vietnam War was from November 1955 through April 1975. So your comments just don’t line up (or at least I do not understand how you reached your conclusions).
Bottom line is we all want to stay cool! Quitting time for me on Claycord if I plan to be outside by 7a to start ripping out some Algerian ivy which is in attack mode. It’s nice work with all the birds around, and it makes me feel good to look up at those big trees and remember when I first bought them in 2-gallon tubs and amended the heavy adobe soil so as to transplant them.
Antler: So the 1955 date is used by some to divide up the baby-boomer generation into two subgroups. The 1955 date is a reference to what was influencing them when they were coming of age. For example, the second half after 1955 would have been too young to have been aware of or influenced by JFK. Same for the Vietnam war where maybe their older brothers and sisters were impacted and they perhaps saw it on the news, but there is a big difference between talking about it and actually being drafted and standing in Vietnam like the first half of the baby-boomer generation went through. So it is the influences at teenage and such years as they grew up which is the focus with the theory that what a generation goes through in their formative years will have a huge influence on them.

And yes, I can attest to the major influence it was on me to be a child of parents who themselves had been through the Great Depression…. and then my own memories of what it was like during the East Coast blackouts and food/materials rationing during WW2.
A happy memory is the way it was safe for us children to be able to play safely anywhere in our Raleigh, NC, neighborhood. The rule was “Be home before dark…. or when your mom blows your specific Army-whistle signal that supper is ready RIGHT NOW!” (My signal was short-short-long, and those military whistles were so powerful that we could hear them from a block away!)
None of this negates the fact that you lived in the safest, most prosperous time for Americans to live. The idea the state refuses to build power plants to keep up with the increasing demand due to the population growth is just criminal. The only reason I brought up the boomer generation is because you guys got what you need and sit here normalizing what is (to me) in effect the lowering of quality of life and opportunity for us.
….. also JFK wasn’t even elected until November 1960.

Yes. We have more electric autos on the road than ever before. Rather than use cheap and clean gasoline that is already available, we have electric driven heavy and toxic batteries to propel our saintly greeny’s to the grocery store for vegetables grown under lights and clothing made from plastics – a petroleum product.
