Martinez City Council To Decide On Anti-Racism Task Force

By Tony Hicks – The Martinez City Council on Wednesday night will take another crack at forming an anti-racism and anti-discrimination, pro-inclusion and equity task force, likely appointing two of its own members to help direct the process from an ad hoc subcommittee.

The council took 26 applications for the task force by its previous Sept. 1 deadline last year, but chose not to appoint anyone to the panel, which includes nine members and two alternates.

The council – which said the goal of the panel would be to review city policies, programs and procedures for bias while making city committees and commissions more inclusive – re-booted the process, saying it wasn’t diverse enough.

The council re-opened the application process and set a Feb. 26 deadline, for which 14 people applied.

The council then directed city staff to identify a facilitator to run a community forum on issues of race, inclusion and equity. The council again changed direction March 17, deciding not to pursue the session and instead form an ad hoc subcommittee to the council.

The idea for the task force goes back to July 2020, after several incidents occurred in Martinez related to the death of George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin last summer. Chauvin is currently on trial for murder and manslaughter.

The killing sparked protests across the nation, including in Martinez, where activists painted a Black Lives Matter street mural downtown, which was painted over by counter protestors.

During the next few days, confrontations surrounding the mural included one in which a 30-year-old Martinez man was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a loaded revolver during an argument with a mural supporter.

Also, someone painted “White Lives matter” across Howe Road in Martinez.

A staff report for Wednesday’s meeting says Mayor Rob Schroder will appoint councilmembers Lara DeLaney and Mark Ross to the new subcommittee, subject to council approval.

NO racism issues in Martinez, based on the Section 8 & Government housing there…..I would say the true racism is Against the Indigenous residents of Martinez.

BTW, take action and Do something about the Railroad Quiet zones like every progressive city in the Bay Area and Central Valley has already taken care of.

Let’s not forget that it was the actions of the City Council that created a rapid rise in racial tension.

Last summer they secretly approved a BLM mural in front of the court house. This incident led to several related arrests and a protest/march that left downtown businesses boarded up.

The City Council’s justification for the approval of the mural was that “hate flyers” had recently been found in the downtown area. These “hate flyers” were an obvious hoax and seem to only have been discovered by a single person who brought a copy to the police.

You can view the supposed “hate flyer” below. It reads like a parody. Three spelling mistakes in the first line? What a tangled web we weave…

Wouldn’t the assumption that the City itself has created a racist atmosphere be racists in itself?

And if the City is racists, why would a racist be appointed to reduce racism?

What authority or power does the City believe it has to determine what racism is?

What authority or power does the City believe it has to curtail the racism it created?

> What authority or power does the City believe it has to determine what racism is?
> What authority or power does the City believe it has to curtail the racism it created?

The power of the voters who elect people who make these decisions.

If the people don’t like the decisions made they can vote someone else in.

This is literally part of the reason we vote and not just have a popular vote on everything.

Cellophane April 8, 2021 - 6:39 PM - 6:39 PM

Voting is rigged.

Politicians follow the wishes of their political betters and top donors.

The City Council is similar to a dog’s hind leg.

George Floyd was ALLEGEDLY killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The trial is ongoing, and Mr Chauvin has not yet been convicted of killing Mr Floyd.
Tony Hicks should know better, he’s been a journalist for over 20 years.

Yoyo Hop April 8, 2021 - 12:24 PM - 12:24 PM

Agreed. Come on Hicks. Get you s#@t together. Floyd’s is a nuanced case that has already been sensationalized by the media.

RANDOM TASK April 8, 2021 - 8:52 AM - 8:52 AM

wow

The council – which said the goal of the panel would be to review city policies, programs and procedures for bias while making city committees and commissions more inclusive

hmmm more inclusive committees lol

so when the people of the city who wanted to help and be a part of your communist council stepped up

you opted for bias and racism to abolish it since it didn’t fit your communist narrative

there by being racist and bias and assuming those people would not be good enough for YOUR direction and YOUR wants

just stop with your sad devotion to enslave us to be a focused bias against the people of this country

the fact that your now pushing to place 2 people from the city council that you choose to lead the (unbiased lol council) should be proof enough that your forcing a narrative

i would hope that those people who came together and actually were willing to help their community …..would now show just how powerful they are and send you council members out of office for belittling them as not racist enough to serve YOUR wants and needs

but thank you martinez city council for showing just how bad democrat leftists are.
and how they… WANT …what THEY …want only
and the people are only here to serve them

i can not believe you committed your bias and racism and aniti america rhetoric and posted your manifesto of hate

america is free
not a tool for hate

that sweet town of hard working people and american hearts deserves better than a council imposing a political hate on them
and casting out their volunteers of hope
like undeserving peons

i hope these actions of yours are seen by the entire country as to the direction dem leftists are driving our country

this country is the only one of its kind
because it is free and the people do have a voice and are allowed to use it and be a part of all of it

not just what politicians allow them to

shameful yet most councils are very similar in contra commie county

WC April 8, 2021 - 9:38 AM - 9:38 AM

Keep voting in liberal Democrats and this is the garbage you get.

Ricardoh April 8, 2021 - 10:00 AM - 10:00 AM

When they use the word “equity” you already know the idea is racist. Whatever laws or policies they already have are for everyone.

Darwin April 8, 2021 - 10:20 AM - 10:20 AM

MANUFACTURED RACISM!!!

Wake up people! Keep voting democrat and this is what you get.

Can anyone tell me who is oppressed in this country????

What can’t anyone do???

The only person holding you back is the person looking back at you in the mirror. You can go to rags to riches in one lifetime no matter your ethnicity. People do it all the time.

Martinez must have some extra funds laying around.

Lazy One April 8, 2021 - 1:09 PM - 1:09 PM

Martinez doesn’t have a racism problem. Why doesn’t the city spend time on something that will benefit everyone? It could start with cleaning up the trash on the streets. Then fix the streets. And what happened to the market place that was suppose to open in April on Main St?

Clam Bake April 8, 2021 - 1:18 PM - 1:18 PM

This is asking for legal trouble (in Martinez no less).

remember April 8, 2021 - 2:06 PM - 2:06 PM

if anything it wrong it is those who use race to divide us.

they are BLM, antifa, the left and the dems. so maybe have your subcommittee focus on the trouble makers, for a change.

Yertle the Turtle April 8, 2021 - 4:58 PM - 4:58 PM

We live in clown world where feelings matter more than facts.
We actually live in a world where 13 % of the population commits 56% of the violent crim (FBI crime stats)
But clown world through the M5M tells you that there is an epidemic of white violence against blacks when the crime stats tell a totally different story.

Dr. Jellyfinger April 8, 2021 - 6:39 PM - 6:39 PM

Truth hurts…. so lie.

Gittyup April 8, 2021 - 11:05 PM - 11:05 PM

And, the 13% committing 56% of the crime
just wants us to look the other way.

She is with her people?
After reports that a $1.4 million home in a secluded area of Los Angeles whose population is reputedly less than 2% black was sold to one of the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement, some black conservative commentators took her to task.

On Wednesday, dirt.com reported, “A secluded mini-compound tucked into L.A.’s rustic and semi-remote Topanga Canyon was recently sold for a tad more than $1.4 million to a corporate entity that public records show is controlled by Patrisse Khan-Cullors, 37-year-old social justice visionary and co-founder of the galvanizing and, for some, controversial Black Lives Matter movement.”

Thank you for that. I think watching hypocrisy in action is fun sometimes and I missed this story. I’m guessing the “corporation” that bought it is really just the tax deductible contributions made to improve Black Lives. Remember the civic leaders in Chicago reached out a year ago to BLM to help stop the shootings and violence, and never ever heard back from BLM according to the Chicago Tribune.

remember April 9, 2021 - 2:31 PM - 2:31 PM

not that it is important but why would trained marxist want to have a huge estate?

To Do List April 9, 2021 - 4:09 PM - 4:09 PM

Fun to see the lifestyles of the race baiters and limousine liberals. Bernie Sanders has three houses. Maxine Waters lives in a Los Angeles mansion not even in her district, well, there would not be a mansion in a district like that anyway. Elizabeth Warren has an incredible three story Victorian in an exclusive neighborhood. Somebody should publish a “coffee table” book of this nonsense.

Anonymous April 9, 2021 - 5:36 PM - 5:36 PM

A manager or former manager at States Coffee in Martinez is behind a lot of the BLM protest BS in Martinez. His rental house in Martinez is plastered with BLM propaganda as well. There is an effort by Berkeley leftists to turn Martinez into the Berkeley of central Contra Costa. Martinez is the county seat and a lot of unions are based there. County employees abound. The downtown has been a ghost town for years. It’s a perfect target.
