The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question:
QUESTION: Do you collect anything? If so, what is it, and how much have you spent on your collection?
Talk about it….

Baseball cards
North of $50k
Hugs and kisses from my adorable Grand-babies. Although they are free…I do spend a ton of money on spoiling them. Papa just can’t get enough.
Outdoor potted plants and spices!
1920s – 1950s electrical engineering and reference books along with hand held test equipment. Hand drawn illustrations in those books for large motors, rewinding and trouble shooting are incredibly detailed. Books are getting harder to find because so many used book stores have closed.
These days, can’t stand those new pain in the azz auto ranging volt meters.
Yes Original G…those old analog Simpson’s (D Batteries) were the best.
Nothing – I’m free from that now.
But when I was a kid, if you’d given me three of anything (cards, coins, stamps, etc.), I would be trapped into collecting the entire set.
Now I just buy what I need – no collecting involved.
Where do I start,…LOL!
But I have stopped, because I have all that I like/need and some to part with. Most of everything has been at thrift shops, yard sales, swap meets and/or free. Vintage China, mirrors, vintage picture frames, linens, fabrics (to quilt), lead glass candle sticks, vintage lamps, and some furniture.
Also, a small collection of Jennifer Murphy original critters and Nicole Sayer items (signed) and Jackie Boutin ceramic ware.
Cost for all items listed (in the past 35 Years),….under $5,000.
Magic cards.
All my allowance since 1991 until i moved out, but now some are worth $1-2k each or more if graded/signed.
Are you enjoying the newest set? Have been playing a lot of Kaldheim on Arena.
Lately I seem to collecting a lot of dust.
Nothing, but I am a rare book dealer.

I collect antiques. Luckily Henley’s Antiques on Clayton Road has been open all along so I can get my fix for antiques.
Yes! These days they are open only Thursday-Saturday, so that has been cramping my style a bit.
Small ton of Star Trek books, paper and hard copy. Also lots of other sci fi books. I hope to live long enough to read them all again. Between them I have over 40 storage boxes. All indexed in a database. Also a smaller variety of Star Trek ornaments and other items. It all takes up space so I stopped collecting several years ago.

Business is great.
I don’t collect anything anymore, but before smoking was banned in public, I collected ashtrays and matchbooks from everywhere I’ve been. In the ’70’s I had a pickup truck with a camper and I covered the camper with bumper stickers from everywhere I’ve been also. My refrigerator is covered with magnets, but it’s been over 15 years since I got my last magnet. I also have a small stash of old coins. They probably won’t be worth a lot in my lifetime so I’ll give them to my granddaughter, and maybe they will be worth something by the time she grows old.
Dawg, I never smoked, never the less I had a nice collection of matchbooks from my favorite hang out in San Francisco, mostly from mid eighties to mid nineties. Perry’s, Mulhern, Club 9, Lily’s. The Royal Exchange, Cadillac Bar and Grill, Tivoli Savoy and Silouettes. On the back I would write why that place was special to me, a special date etc. I probably have them somewhere still, not sure.
@Hanne
I was working at One Embarcadero Center when I turned 21 and had my first legal drink at The Royal Exchange on my lunch hour. Good times.
Old Pawn Turquoise bracelets and rings. I also collect Friends
Ancestors and cousins
Coins, ever since I was little. Anyone know a source for appraising/buying old rare Chinese coins??
Contact Alex at Bolerium Books in San Francisco, 415-863-6353. He is very knowledgeable in Chinese coins.

When I was a penniless pup most every business had their own matches…and my parents weren’t the fun-sucking lunatics parents are today…thus began my matchbook collection.

What does 108RS mean???
I collect corn snakes,
Other than the matchbooks I mentioned earlier, I would say my collection of jazz CD’s. I have lots of CD’s, sixties rock and roll, musicals and classical music, but my jazz collection is a little more deliberate, live recordings from the Montreux Jazz Festival, especially 1975 and 1977, Oscar Peterson, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and others plus my fellow Dane on bass Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen. I also have several live recording from the Copenhagen Jazz Club I use to frequent as a teen ager, Montmartre Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Niels Henning and others. Saw Dexter Gordon there several times, unfortunately didn’t get to see Ben Webster.
Atari 2600 games. Been collecting games since I got my first console back in 1982. I found a one of a kind prototype at the Solano Flea Market. I bought it for 2 bucks and it’s worth about 5000 bucks.
Anything old. I can walk into any antique store and pick out items I already own. It’s a sickness but so fun.
We collect glass. Me, Davenport sea glass. My wife, Fire and Light glassware from the now closed Fire and Light Glass works up in Arcata. She has a cupboard full of glassware, from plates to cake stands. Fire and Light closed down due to California’s job-killing regulations. The state would not allow them to make red glassware any longer. The glassworks went out of business, but their $10 glass saucers are now selling for hundreds of dollars online. Check your local thrift shop, you might get lucky.
@Noj
You mentioned Arcata, which I’m very familiar with, and was wondering if you previously lived up there?
