Huckleberry’s restaurant will soon occupy the former Mel’s Diner building on Treat Blvd. in Concord.

Huckleberry’s described itself as “Southern Cookin’ With A California Twist!”

They have about 18 locations in California, including one in Benicia.

Looks good. I wish they would change something, however, I like this kind of comfort food, but this being California and all, there are other family members with different diets and I would like it if they could offer something, anything, for a vegetarian so we could go there as a group. Had that issue yesterday at Chic-fil-a where a side of mac and cheese was the only thing available for one person. This probably makes me sound like a whining snowflake.

Nikki March 7, 2021 - 12:36 PM - 12:36 PM

Those restaurants you mentioned aren’t designed for vegetarians, so go somewhere else. It’s that simple.

Cowellian March 7, 2021 - 1:31 PM - 1:31 PM

Coming to the South was a huge shock for my daughter, who is a pescatarian. She can’t even trust the veggies to not have meat in them. We joke that Mac & Cheese is her favorite vegetable when dining out.

She once ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit, without the bacon, at a Krystal. They charged her for an egg, with a biscuit and added cheese, and it was more expensive than my bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit.

Barbara March 7, 2021 - 1:40 PM - 1:40 PM

I agree with vegetarian options for people and not just because they are vegan or vegetarian. I have to be for medical reasons. I love meat and would eat it if I could. Sometimes I have to order some sort of side for dinner when I’m with a group. I would like to have a regular dinner. Can’t they have maybe a veggie burger on the menu?

Shrektrician March 7, 2021 - 6:01 PM - 6:01 PM

I usually take vegetarians to Concord Feed

Marc March 7, 2021 - 8:34 PM - 8:34 PM

They have a skillet called the garden combo. Looks good. Spinach, mushroom, onion, tomato, bell peppers. Grits. Shrimp poboy. Those are always great.

Loretta Jean Schnittker March 7, 2021 - 12:24 PM - 12:24 PM

As a vegan myself, I just order the salads. Personally, I just feel better eating vegan, it has nothing to with politics or love of animals.

Cowellian March 7, 2021 - 2:56 PM - 2:56 PM

I do prefer meatless to any kind of fake meats.

FPN March 10, 2021 - 11:27 AM - 11:27 AM

@Loretta, same here.

DD March 7, 2021 - 12:37 PM - 12:37 PM

Decent little restaurant chain. We hit them for Breakfast every so often and never been disappointed.

Randy March 7, 2021 - 1:27 PM - 1:27 PM

… hope the service is better than Mel’s was

Shoulda Coulda March 7, 2021 - 5:49 PM - 5:49 PM

Randy-

We’ve been to their location in Benicia many
times. Suggest you try it until the Concord
restaurant finishes construction and opens in
June or July. The great service is one of the
reasons we enjoy going there. I agree with
Larry that the food is very tasty. This is a very
nice addition to the Claycord Community’s
dining options.
options.

concordmom March 7, 2021 - 1:40 PM - 1:40 PM

Great…another average chain. Might as well be an Olive Garden. Come on Concord… That whole area (both sides of treat) needs to be bulldozed and rebuilt into something better, better food, better markets, better outdoor space.

Cowellian March 7, 2021 - 2:50 PM - 2:50 PM

You’re right, Claycord does need its own Olive Garden!

Mr Pink March 7, 2021 - 1:41 PM - 1:41 PM

I’ve never heard of Huckleberry’s, but I welcome anything new. And having always been a fan of Huckleberry Hound I take this as a good sign.

Cyn March 7, 2021 - 2:36 PM - 2:36 PM

@Mr Pink
Lol.

George March 7, 2021 - 2:27 PM - 2:27 PM

These days I’m just glad a new restaurant business is moving back in.

weppin March 7, 2021 - 2:46 PM - 2:46 PM

Will this place only be open from 7am to 3 pm – breakfast and lunch? Makes it tough on people who work…

Bella March 7, 2021 - 2:57 PM - 2:57 PM

I agree with concordmom and To Do List, you definitely do NOT sound like a snowflake.

The Masked (and gloved) Poster March 7, 2021 - 3:05 PM - 3:05 PM

After the demise of Bob’s Big Boy, that location never recovered. Mel’s started out good, probably because of having a reputation to uphold, but they went downhill and never recovered. I tried them three times, each being worse than the previous time, so, for me, that was it. Period. Maybe Huckleberry’s will turn out better than the previous operations, but only if they maintain the quality of food and service people pay for. The location isn’t the most favorable, but getting a lot of good reviews on Yelp would be good, but those don’t come without having good food and service. What’s going to set them apart from all the other restaurants in the area? And I said “restaurants”, not fast food joints.

Cowellian March 7, 2021 - 3:16 PM - 3:16 PM

I took a look at Huckleberry’s menu, and I wouldn’t mind having one of them near me.

Livesteam March 7, 2021 - 11:10 PM - 11:10 PM

Cowellian You’ll have to come and try it out but hey you have cracker barrel and olive garden

Cowellian March 8, 2021 - 8:33 AM - 8:33 AM

We have Cracker Barrels almost like Boston has Dunkin’ Donuts, and we did Cracker Barrel take-out on Saturday night. But I do like variety, and I’m a sucker for Monte Cristos.

Dr. Jellyfinger March 7, 2021 - 3:55 PM - 3:55 PM

Awful name for a restaurant but the menu is intriguing…

Larry March 7, 2021 - 4:07 PM - 4:07 PM

Huckleberry’s is great and nothing like an iHop.

It is much closer to a Cracker Barrel.

Chances are you will enjoy it.

ChuckStir March 7, 2021 - 5:46 PM - 5:46 PM

Bob’s Bigboy was a great no frills resturant and something like that really should take the place of Mel’s (RIP). concordmom, if you want upscale head to The French Laundry or the city. As far as I can see a resturtant like Bob’s or Olive Garden would be fine in that spot

Lynne Ellis March 7, 2021 - 5:48 PM - 5:48 PM

I want dinner to not just breakfast and lunch

Mike March 7, 2021 - 9:25 PM - 9:25 PM

Then make your own dinner or go to Buttercup

George March 7, 2021 - 7:32 PM - 7:32 PM

Looking at their website and menu, it reminds me of Black Bear Diner except it will close at 3pm

Ms. MOM March 7, 2021 - 9:35 PM - 9:35 PM

We have been to the Fairfield location a few times & have had a great meal each time. I do agree we basic dinner places that are better than black bear or buttercup in this area.

Stevo March 7, 2021 - 11:23 PM - 11:23 PM

We miss the Coco’s that was there a few years ago.
Never a bad meal there.

Eddie Pond March 8, 2021 - 1:18 AM - 1:18 AM

I sometimes stop at Huckleberries in Fairfield and enjoyed it both times. Looking forward and welcome them with open arms

TrevQuinn March 8, 2021 - 1:03 PM - 1:03 PM

Can we just have Bob’s Big Boy Burgers back?
Nothing lasts long there, Coco’s had the longest run

Cowellian March 8, 2021 - 1:43 PM - 1:43 PM

I’ve always like Big Boy restaurants. How long had Bob’s Big Boy been in that location? It was there when we moved to Concord, and we enjoyed going there.

Bancroft Mom March 8, 2021 - 3:22 PM - 3:22 PM

You had me at Monte Christo……yum!
