remember March 6, 2021 - 7:20 PM - 7:20 PM

there’s a surprise

whatever March 6, 2021 - 7:21 PM - 7:21 PM

Unpossible.

The teachers want SO BADLY to go back to school!

This surprises nobody.

JazzMan March 6, 2021 - 8:56 PM - 8:56 PM

Not surprising there is pushback. When the District gets a GOOD plan that protects the students, teachers, and admin, then the union will support it to the hilt. Right now it’s only so the Superintendent and the district can line their pockets with the federal aid.

anon March 6, 2021 - 10:26 PM - 10:26 PM

@Jazzman EVERYONE else has gone back to work practically, what makes teachers so special? They would get far less exposure in their daily work than the clerk at Big O or Walmart or the guy selling you a squishee at the 7-11. What plan is good enough for them? Like someone else pointed out, you could conceive and construct the most perfect Covid-annihalating building known to man and they would still complain and refuse to go back to work, all while collecting their highly, highly inflated salaries. https://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/school-districts/contra-costa/acalanes-union-high/

Mdteach March 7, 2021 - 7:21 AM - 7:21 AM

I’m applying for a job there… we don’t get those salaries or benefits.

Cellophane March 6, 2021 - 7:33 PM - 7:33 PM

Of course, the Union resists doing the work they are paid to do.

They got a year off with full pay and benefits.

Who wants to work for their money.

That’s the way communism works, isn’t it?

JazzMan March 6, 2021 - 8:59 PM - 8:59 PM

“Full pay and benefits” yes. Not a year off, where did you get that idea. The teachers worked from home, putting in MORE hours than they would’ve had they been in class. You have NO idea how hard they worked.

JRocks March 6, 2021 - 9:15 PM - 9:15 PM

The teachers union is the tip of the socialist spear. The power they have over our children is criminal. If you vote for Democrats this is on you. The Dems have effectively become the party of the government for the government.

On the bright side. California’s response to the Chinese Flu has finally convinced my wife that we need to leave this God forsaken state.

Never let a crisis go to waste.

Mdteach March 7, 2021 - 7:25 AM - 7:25 AM

Trolling along…
I have worked more than I ever have to provide my students an education. I’m ready to return to the classroom. But the Mdusd has an extremely long track record of being untrustworthy and lying. They are inept and poorly managed. I understand why many teachers don’t trust that they will implement a safe return plan. It’s the unions job to check that and make sure its members are safe in the workplace.

Joho March 7, 2021 - 7:30 AM - 7:30 AM

@jazzman
Teachers are working more hours????

My kid has an hour of zoom per day. How is that more work?

Sam Harrison March 7, 2021 - 12:07 PM - 12:07 PM

@MDTECH, the blame does not fall all on the district. The teachers are at fault for what’s going on as well. You are all stealing vaccines from “True Essential Workers” and still want to whine. This falls on you teachers as you are what makes the unions and tell your reps what you don’t want to do such as DOING YOUR JOB! The unions are being difficult and I’m sure you have seen the video your privileged Union Leader posted yesterday. You are not a victim. The children are the true victims. Please do elaborate how hard it is to teach from your home in your Pajamas while kids are suffering. Let’s not forget those teachers that discriminate against those they are not friends with. They only take the time to help those that they are friends with their moms.

ZZ March 8, 2021 - 9:07 AM - 9:07 AM

At the beginning of this hoax teachers had to figure out how to use Zoom. That took time because they basically had to teach themselves. 6 months (March-September) of teaching themselves and seeing what works in an actual classroom should be more than enough time to figure things out. Required teaching time was drastically cut and Independent Work replaced it. No, teachers are not working harder.

Jessica March 9, 2021 - 12:16 PM - 12:16 PM

@joho
I second that. If someone can explain to me what prep my child’s teacher does to create 1.5 hours of “instruction”, half of which is spent talking about unrelated personal stuff, then I would love to hear it.

The Wizard March 6, 2021 - 7:34 PM - 7:34 PM

Who would have thought.

Schmee March 6, 2021 - 7:56 PM - 7:56 PM

I’m sure this won’t cause any commotion….

Old Timer March 6, 2021 - 8:31 PM - 8:31 PM

Send all the lazy asses to the unemployment line.

Plinko March 6, 2021 - 8:42 PM - 8:42 PM

I’ve become so numb
I can’t feel you there
Become so tired
So much more aware
I’m becoming this
All I want to do
Is be more like me
And be less like you

Schmee March 6, 2021 - 8:53 PM - 8:53 PM

Man I miss Chester he was such a nice guy in person and a truly genuine soul.

SB March 6, 2021 - 8:46 PM - 8:46 PM

Teachers and support professionals want to return to in-person instruction, but the only plan teachers have seen from the district is a pretty pamphlet released late last week. Mt. Diablo Unified announced in October that they want to open in the potentially successful, or potential train wreck, hybrid-model on January 11. My thought was great, we can work out all of the problems with students and adults who may be in more than one class or school each day. Now we are looking at opening with barely two weeks notice, and none of the concerns addressed by teachers and support people in October have started to get answered. For the few exceptions students are allowed on site, the rules we have in place have not been followed. A non-politically motivated opening plan will convince teachers to return. Reopening without a plan will fail.

SB March 6, 2021 - 11:16 PM - 11:16 PM

There is no agenda, and the only agenda employees of MDUSD want is a believable plan from the district that they can achieve.

Yanes March 7, 2021 - 4:59 PM - 4:59 PM

How much more time do they need? It’s been a whole year of talking and schools are still closed. Regardless of 2 weeks notice it’s been on the works. Teachers vaccinated, classrooms modified. What’s the problem now. A couple hours a week is BS. How many kids are failing with distance learning, but that seems to be on the bottom of all concerns.

Resident March 6, 2021 - 9:07 PM - 9:07 PM

The teachers and their union are so selfish. I can’t believe it. Time to vote for school choice!

Soon to be ex-Californian March 6, 2021 - 11:19 PM - 11:19 PM

Aunt Barbara, what exactly do you think parents have been doing for the last year?

Sam Harrison March 7, 2021 - 8:25 AM - 8:25 AM

Aunt Barbara, WTF do you think we have been doing? We’ve been doing your job while you sit at home doing the minimum.
You’re just a union tool that needs someone to speak up for you because you’re too weak to do what’s right.
Just remember this, the teachers will be disliked more than the police ever have been. You will forever be known as a worthless oppressor.

Wc parent March 7, 2021 - 9:40 AM - 9:40 AM

Aunt Barbara, the parents are the teachers! My elementary kids gets 2 hours of teaching a day and the rest of the day we teach! Wake up

The Fearless Spectator March 6, 2021 - 9:57 PM - 9:57 PM

You could build brand new super ventilated schools in the middle of an ecologically perfect biosphere and they would find a reason not to reopen.

They hold children hostage and each time the ransom is paid they raise it yet again. They have Newsom by the short hairs so he can’t do anything. Since clearly money is all they understand perhaps it’s time to make sure students pursue other opportunities.

anon March 6, 2021 - 10:29 PM - 10:29 PM

Funny how no teachers are here telling us how desperate they are to come back to work and educate the students. They’re happy and fat, working less than ever while collecting ever-higher wages, with their feet up on the table and a glass of wine in their hand. Covid is the best thing to ever happen to educators, and the worst thing to ever happen to those seeking an education.

Now we have teachers actively stealing vaccines from elderly and immunocompromised individuals, despite that the teachers work from home in complete and utter safety. Innocent elderly people will die so a 32 year old math teacher can get a vaccine he doesn’t need, both because he’s too young and he works from home.

Teacher March 7, 2021 - 9:00 AM - 9:00 AM

“Every-higher wages” – we haven’t had a raise in 3 years.

Plinko March 7, 2021 - 9:38 AM - 9:38 AM

Well said. Fat is definitely accurate. I saw a few teachers recently and they have definitely added some lbs.
Teachers: please step away from the feeding trough and get back to work. If nohing else, for your own health. We don’t need you to continue to add to the obesity epidemic.

Sam Harrison March 7, 2021 - 11:27 AM - 11:27 AM

@Teacher, you don’t deserve a raise. So don’t expect us to be there for you. Not after what you have proven this past year. As a matter of fact, we need a refund for the crappy job you have done this entire pandemic. Take a seat and wait until we start giving a hoot about you or your needs.
Wait another 10 years you can go shove your union up where the sun don’t shine. You are the union and the problem and making it impossible to get these kids back all along stealing vaccines from actual “Essential workers” you’re all a joke and privilege scumbags. Sit down & go eat ice cream. That’s all your worth. Kids are literally suffering and all you care is about your raise. You guys are PATHETIC!
GET TO WORK OR SHUT THE F UP!

Happy Squash March 6, 2021 - 10:42 PM - 10:42 PM

So, question for teachers & union supporters here: if everything is so risky and so unsafe that you couldn’t possibly set a toe on campuses, why are districts all around us starting to reopen? Brentwood. San Ramon. Lafayette. Orinda. Dublin. Why are schools all around us starting to take those first steps, yet MDEA is freaking out over 4 hours per week proposed hybrid? Teachers are moving to the front of the line for vaccines! Which is so awesome! So, why is it still so very unsafe that you won’t just make an agreement? Your union leadership is driving your train right into the ground. You have lost so much support among parents, the media, the community. The only people that don’t think the unions are ridiculous obstructionists at this point are….the union! So, hopefully you will see which way the wind is blowing and make a deal. If not, you can expect that the parents of this district will fully turn against you, and you will have created a legion of voters who are now open to charter schools and school voucher programs and politicians who support them. Anything to not be under the boot of the union. Threaten a strike? Go for it. We already have to help our kids so much with distance learning that it won’t make much difference. Hey according to you guys, learning in a computer indefinitely is just fine, so why don’t we all just use a homeschooler program and take our kids and our money out of the district? You can all be super safe when you’re laid off because MDUSD has to cut teacher jobs and close schools due to the mass exodus from this district.
Seriously, it has gotten ridiculous. They only propose opening 4 measly hours per week! And the district secured 500 vaccines just for teachers. At this point I am so sick of the union. They’ve burned parent support and trust possibly forever at this point.

Happy Squash March 6, 2021 - 10:52 PM - 10:52 PM

Incidentally: I am so glad teachers are getting vaccinated! And accommodations should be made for their safety-parents overwhelming feel that way. Remember, we are the parents who donated our time to help in classrooms. We donated supplies for years and were glad to do it! We worked fundraisers, PTA events, raised money for school projects. It makes me so sad and angry that the parent – teacher relationship is so fractured right now

SB March 6, 2021 - 11:13 PM - 11:13 PM

Teachers just want to know what the plan is before agreeing to return, not Tweets. Hybrid instruction is not business as usually. Teachers have been at the school sites since last August, that means they are at work.

The root of the staff and district problem is much older than COVID. The district tells the public one thing, and then comes to negotiations completely unprepared, or with a separate agenda. This has been the case with the last three superintendents.

Why would you put your kids in a room with teachers and other professions that you do not trust? That makes no sense! Let me guess, your teacher is great, but it all of those OTHER teachers.

Snickerdad March 6, 2021 - 11:16 PM - 11:16 PM

WHOS RUN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE SCHOOL BROAD OR THE UNION. ITS TIME TO TELL TEACHERS “YOU WILL BE BACK IN THE CLASSROOM BY THE END OF MARCH” IF THEY CHOOSE NOT TO SHOW UP THEN THEY CAN LI
OOK FOR OTHER WORK.

Cellophane March 7, 2021 - 7:04 AM - 7:04 AM

Who runs the school district?

The Union.

As it does the Grease Ball.

Weak Representation at the State Level and weak representation locally.

That’s what the average CA voters elected.

Dr. Jellyfinger March 7, 2021 - 7:18 AM - 7:18 AM

The School Broad?
You mean Lynn Mackey?

Paul barnea March 7, 2021 - 1:21 AM - 1:21 AM

Two week deadline. Those who dont show get terminated, no exceptions.

Anonymom March 7, 2021 - 3:04 AM - 3:04 AM

It’s clear you’re not dealing with distance learning or children who are failing. I’ll keep telling my kids to be patient while they fall behind what? Another year? Two years? Until covid is eradicated? Oh and also what happens when both parents work out of the home? They fend for themselves….

Led March 7, 2021 - 3:47 AM - 3:47 AM

What a joke. Except it isn’t funny what this has meant for kids for a whole year.

The district’s”reopening” plan is barely anything, true. But it is also barely any in-person contact between teachers and students. If the union can’t agree with this they can’t agree with any plan. Vaccines? Yes, we’ll take those ahead of 55-60 year olds, but we *still* won’t go back. Extra state money? Not enough? Minimal in-person hours? Not good enough.

Nothing will be good enough. The union is using it’s position as leverage for all they can get, and to delay all the way to fall 2021. Outrageous justice towards a whole generation of kids in our area.

parent March 7, 2021 - 6:16 AM - 6:16 AM

So by keeping them safe, do you mean

Clark County Schools opening up because of a 100% increase in child suicides during he lock down? They went from an average of 9 suicides to 18.

Or do you mean the increase of 90% of self inflicted harm ER visits by teenagers over the last year according the Health Insurance report outs?

I completely disagree with you .. Everyone does NOT need to feel comfortable. If everyone needed to be comfortable, we would not be racing cars on a track, the speed limit would not be 65mph … no, everyone does NOT need to feel comfortable.

KenInConcord March 7, 2021 - 7:10 AM - 7:10 AM

No problem, just give me my VOUCHER for the money I am spending every year. I will shop around to private schools and decide who provides the best education value!!!

SmileWC March 7, 2021 - 8:30 AM - 8:30 AM

I couldn’t agree more.

MDEA & CTA March 7, 2021 - 7:24 AM - 7:24 AM

Both of these dysfunctional organizations have devolved into mindless blobs, gorging themselves to death on money and power.

The kids are nothing more than collateral damage at this point.

Has MDEA or the CTA assembled a mass vaccine push for its members? If they cared so much about the kids, they’d be going in droves to get vaccinated. Make a goal to get all their members vaccinated in the next 4-6 weeks. Commit to something to help our kids, or get out of the way.

The Zoom call on 2/24 made it painfully clear that MDEA or the CTA DO NOT care about kids education.

Their union “enforcer” spewed venom and baseless claims about widespread covid in all cities within MDUSD, getting louder and louder to make his “point”.
His behavior was a stark reminder of how far the union has lost its way.

Yet here we are, about to enter the red tier, teachers can get vaccinated and they have zero plan to compromise with anyone. Typical union bullying 101 rhetoric, bang the table and point the finger at everyone else.

Teachers have FLOWN to vacations during COVID, yet are “terrified” to go back to the classroom because the ventilation is poor? The irony is almost comedic.

How can any of these “educators” look at themselves in the mirror, and honestly believe they are doing what’s best for every single kid at MDUSD?

“Man looks into the abyss, and there’s nothing staring back at him. At that moment, man finds his character, and that is what keeps him out of the abyss.”

Randy March 7, 2021 - 7:32 AM - 7:32 AM

… no surprise… and nobody has the guts to speak up to them and open the schools up … weak leadership .. very sad

Jeff (the other one?) March 7, 2021 - 7:49 AM - 7:49 AM

It astounds me how much power the unions now have. If there was a representative government who was not in the pocket of these guys, perhaps something would/could be done. Seems more and more, the citizen loses.

Winnie The Pooh March 7, 2021 - 7:54 AM - 7:54 AM

I am so tired of people like you Aunt Barbara. Not EVERYONE lives with a damn grandparent. Or see’s there grandparents. If my 16 year old daughter can go to work and wear a mask and be safe then so can teachers!

PS: My grandma’s husband died “supposedly” due to COVID visiting her in the hospital after her hip surgery. So guess what, it isn’t just kids giving it to grandparents. Stop blaming our kids!

Retired Teacher March 7, 2021 - 8:20 AM - 8:20 AM

I am a retired teacher in the district and have 3 school age grandchildren (who have been at school, in person learning, since October). The fact that the MDUSD teachers are not returning to work is simply absurd. They have skipped the line to get vaccinated and still refuse to go back to the classroom due to “Safety” concerns. Why are they any more important that the hard working retail worker or the nurse in the hospital. Sure they claim they are working hard at home but they just are not able to teach and do their jobs remotely. I know. I taught from the classroom for 30 years. My neighbor, who teaches in the district, is out gardening and walking her dog before noon. When questioned, she says, she only has to zoom for 90 minutes a day and then she’s done. It’s a travesty that this is happening and that the union is supporting that type of teaching. The honest truth is that the teacher in the classroom is no more at risk of Covid that the average person whose job put them in the public eye. If you truly care about the children you need to go back to the classroom full time. It’s time to dump the union and do what you know if the right thing. This will come back to bite you. The parents and the board need to man up and give these teachers serious consequences for not returning to the job.

Mint March 7, 2021 - 11:41 AM - 11:41 AM

I am a tutor at a learning center, I went back to teaching in person in June 2020. I am not young( over 50).

I do not get a special code from the state as an educator to skip a line to get vaccinated while the teachers who get to stay home to teach get vaccinated no matter how old they are.

Many districts in Bay Area have opened up schools, not all those teachers have not been vaccinated. Total respect for them…

Sam Harrison March 7, 2021 - 12:21 PM - 12:21 PM

We need more teachers like you two and dump this selfish privilege do nothing teacher. All they do is complain.

Led March 7, 2021 - 4:30 PM - 4:30 PM

@Mint, you don’t have to wait for a code to get vaccinated if you work in education/childcare. If you use myturn.ca.gov you will be able to make an appointment, depending on availability. I got my first dose at the Oakland Coliseum site.

Mint March 7, 2021 - 7:27 PM - 7:27 PM

@Led Thank you. I did try, but no appointment was available. I also registered with the county, the same thing.

Now that the teachers will get the special codes, they will skip me for sure even though I registered earlier than them.

Time to Go March 7, 2021 - 9:26 AM - 9:26 AM

Nephew has been in school since October in California in a private school.

A plan should have been in place for returning to school and ready to go at MDUSD MONTHS ago. Poor leadership from the Board, the District, the Union and Teachers. Not a single person from one of these groups could lead a team representing all these entities and come up with a plan? Total incompetence. Heard for years so many are there for the children. COVID has shown our educators true colors.

Sam Harrison March 7, 2021 - 10:18 AM - 10:18 AM

And teachers should get the minimum just like the 1-2-3 hours they teach. You have the comfort of being at home, teach in your pajamas, do the minimum and still get your full benefit. You should only get paid for the minimum and at a lower rate since you have the flexibility to stay home. You’re not wasting gas, clothes, so the pay should definitely be reduced

David March 7, 2021 - 10:31 AM - 10:31 AM

Fire all but 72 teachers statewide. That’s the best teacher per subject per grade level. Record all classes the first year, then second year use recordings and teachers have time to work with problem students. Rent out the school buildings. Give the state money to the parents so they can hire babysitters (as per the Brentwood ex-board that’s what the teachers are). No need for outdated Prussian indoctrination system anymore. It’s 2021 for God’s sake – not 1763!

T March 7, 2021 - 10:57 AM - 10:57 AM

For the first time ever, I am seriously considering private school, at least for my youngest. I cannot get on board with this proposed hybrid program, nor can I allow my child to go through another year like this one. I have always been a proponent of public school, but this has pushed me over the edge. If my oldest, who goes to a charter school, is able to go back full time next year, then my youngest will more than likely will end up in a private school. If neither of them are going back full time or some semblance there of, it just may be the push we need to leave the state. Our kids deserve better than what the district, the union and the state for that matter, are offering.

Doh March 7, 2021 - 11:02 AM - 11:02 AM

How would you keep the children safe in this pandemic? What is a child’s life worth?

huh? March 7, 2021 - 3:07 PM - 3:07 PM

Children safe? Preschools are open… normal… no COVID. No deaths in CC under 30. Safe from?? Going homeless because parents can’t go to work? I lost my job because I had to be a teacher at home…. get back to the classroom!

ConcernedParent March 7, 2021 - 7:46 PM - 7:46 PM

@Doh You can’t be serious! The CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics says it is safe for children to go to school. Do a minute of research.
Besides, there will always be a risk for something i.e. Influenza, Meningitis…Our children don’t live in bubbles.

T March 7, 2021 - 11:10 AM - 11:10 AM

For the first time ever, I am seriously considering sending my youngest to private school. I am not on board with the proposed hybrid program, nor can I allow my child/ren to continue with another year of Distance Learning. Until this year, I have always been a proponent of public schools. This past year has been disheartening to say the least. Our children’s best interest have not been the forefront of our state, county, district or the union. Our children’s education has become a pawn in a political chess game. If my oldest, who goes to a charter school, is able to go back full time next year, then my youngest will be pulled from the district. Unless, of course the district makes huge strides in the educational plan for the coming year. If neither are going back full time or so semblance there of, it may be the push we need to finally leave CA.

PH_Dad March 8, 2021 - 12:45 PM - 12:45 PM

With all of the misinformation, fear mongering and bad advice out there, quite often science which could be informative is being ignored.
A study from last year made a correlation between the levels of MMR II vaccine levels in the blood and resistance to COVID-19. This could easily explain why very few children have become ill and when they do, they recover quickly.
https://tinyurl.com/9529esnb
This is peer reviewed science… I’m not a microbiologist, but this is not a difficult paper to understand. Blows plenty of holes in the narratives that people have been pushing
My summary is to reopen the schools without this ridiculous “hybrid” babysitting option. Continue wearing masks and quit the fear mongering.

Sam Harrison March 7, 2021 - 12:19 PM - 12:19 PM

Teachers do not deserve any raises as they are not back in school doing THEIR JOB! These people are not essential workers like they like to claim. They’re just thieves stealing from the elderly in need. Some may say it’s the board or district. Sorry, but it’s you and your Unions. If you really cared for the education of these kids you would stand up to your oppressive leaders and because you have not done so you will not have the support of parents. You do the minimum with your 1-2 hours of zoom. Teaching has become a joke. Let get some real worthy people to teach our kids. These people are a disgrace. Love how they like to point the finger but take no accountability of their inactions.

Time to Go March 7, 2021 - 8:06 PM - 8:06 PM

This week there is a plan? Really? Only a year and now more time is needed?

The Government runs our schools so well, just can’t wait for them to implement medicare for all.

Yanes March 7, 2021 - 5:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Lost Pride March 7, 2021 - 9:29 PM - 9:29 PM

Open the schools now.
Any MDUSD employee who does not show up WORK- fire them.
They have had a year to figure this out.

publius March 7, 2021 - 10:43 PM - 10:43 PM

Given the crap these hard left neo-fellow travelers are “teaching” our kids the kids might be better off skipping all together and going to schools that teach subject matter, manners, patriotism, respect for one another, the ability to try to achieve whatever you wish.

To Do List March 8, 2021 - 10:16 AM - 10:16 AM

I like history. Wish they taught it in high school. They claim they do. There are actually classes called “history.” I asked an 11th grader yesterday when the Middle Ages were in Europe. They guessed the 1700s. So about the time of the US revolution, students believe in Europe there were serfs, feudal warlords, King Arthur and the like. This same student a couple of weeks ago said they were being taught a section on LGBTQ. This is indoctrination with propaganda, not teaching. But the teachers are immune to sarcasm or criticism because in their minds their frantic need to change the culture is more important.

Rollo Tomasi March 7, 2021 - 11:27 PM - 11:27 PM

@parent:

I have yet to see a response, reasoned or otherwise, to those statistics you posted. No response from teacher’s unions, teachers, district leadership – nothing.
The sad part for me is I personally know of more suicides by young people than deaths due to COVID.

hmm.. March 8, 2021 - 9:03 AM - 9:03 AM

So what’s the difference between the teachers union in SRVUSD and MDUSD?? they can all manage but our district, teachers, and union can’t???

Kids need to go back.. period.. if the teachers are vaccinated, shame on you for not fighting for the return of these kids..

Are the teachers lazy or just stupid?

Also it’s child abuse to have those kids in masks.

hmm.. March 8, 2021 - 11:52 AM - 11:52 AM
