Back in January of 1978, Concord had something to be proud of, they had the largest Safeway in the San Francisco Bay Area!

As we all know, the Clayton Valley Safeway is now located across the street from their old stomping grounds, but before it moved to Clayton, it called the Clayton Valley Shopping Center home for many years.

This article highlights Safeway’s former location where Outdoor Supply Hardware (OSH) currently stands today. Before Safeway moved into the OSH building in late 1977, they occupied the small space which is now leased to a gym, next to Rose Liquors.

I remember that as being a big deal; it was a few months after we moved from Concord to Clayton.
