Got my shingles vax (2nd dose), so that is done. Waiting until the government determines I am suitable an individual to get the Corona vax with their ineffective tier system. In the meantime, will still keep trying to lose weight, build for retirement, and proudly watch my kids grow. Trying to learn electronics for fun…

Cowellian January 15, 2021 at 8:07 PM

My Doctor told me to hold off on the 2nd Shingles shot until after the Covid shots.

Bad Nombre January 15, 2021 at 8:36 PM

I did the Shingrix regimen at the end of 2020. A real kick in the butt each time.

Jeff (the other one?) January 15, 2021 at 10:02 PM

thanks Nombre…
We shall see, first dose I was fairly reactive, fever for a day+, felt off, and arm was sore for a week….2nd dose ,so far, so good…

Bare Root Fruit Trees – Received 4 pre-ordered bare root fruit trees from Watsonville Four Winds Growers this week. Bartlett Pear, Comice Pear, Fuyu Persimmon, and Hachiya Persimmon. The quality and delivery far exceeded my expectations! Trees were 3.5 – 4 feet in height, vigorous trunks and root systems. Securely packed. Trees getting ready to bust out branch and leaf growth. We planted them today. The avocado trees we purchased from them earlier this year are growing and leaving out gloriously.

I will order not-in-stock lemon and grapefruit trees from Four Winds when they come in stock. Signed up for email notification.

Highly recommend Four Winds Growers if you are looking for fruit trees or berry bushes.

KAD January 15, 2021 at 9:41 PM

I want to plant a lemon tree. I will look into this company. Thanks.

Ancient Mariner January 15, 2021 at 10:56 PM

My persimmon tree was declining and has now stopped bearing fruit (after a bad bifurcation breakage a couple of years ago). It does actually produce a few very tiny persimmons, but they are eaten by the birds and squirrels, so there are none left to be harvested. It’s effectively dead. So I want to plant another fruit-bearing tree in its place.
Mary F, thank you for the recommendation about Watsonville 4W – I’ll definitely order from them!
Now, to pick which luscious, juicy fruit I want – decisions, decisions!

Chris January 16, 2021 at 1:16 AM

We have tried planting avacodo trees in our backyard three times and they always die. We have pear, apple, lemon, orange, grapefruit, and locusts. Not sure what we are doing incorrectly, but I’d love any opinions.

Jeff (the other one?) January 16, 2021 at 7:36 AM

I looked at Four Winds some time ago, for a cherry, IIRC. Might look again, based on Mary’s comments.

BOOYAH! January 16, 2021 at 7:59 AM

@Chris, might wanna pack your bags lest ye be smite by boils next.

Ancient Mariner January 16, 2021 at 9:22 AM

Chris,
Avocados are susceptible to frost and internal freezing. they often don’t do well around here, especially if you’re in a microclimate that has frost.

ConcordKate January 16, 2021 at 5:08 PM

Mary, thanks for the recommendation – I signed up for Watsonville Four Winds Growers e-mails. Wanting a couple of Meyer lemon trees when they are available.

Baloo January 16, 2021 at 6:04 PM

Chris, have you tried a mexicola avocado tree? We have harvested 5 years in a row, (maybe we have just been lucky).

Old Timer January 15, 2021 at 9:16 PM

Still can’t make up my mind if I want the COVID shot.I’m retired don’t hang around people a lot and take all the precautions. This thing was brought to the U.S. from China on purpose I believe. Now they have rushed a Vaccine.Who knows what long term side effects there will be.And I don’t trust our government(Democratic’s) lol.

Roz January 16, 2021 at 7:39 AM

@ Old Timer~
Hubby & I feel there is no rush to get the shot, and might not even worry about getting it. May have to in the future if we want to travel by airplane and would not be allowed on the plane without proof of vaccine

Justifiable languor January 16, 2021 at 8:31 AM

While you are contemplating the Covid vaccine, research Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin. All knowledge is good.

FPN January 17, 2021 at 6:29 PM

@0ld Timer, Same situation and same thoughts on vaccine. I will not be getting covid vaccine.

Book report: Came a Cavalier, Frances Parkinson Keys, 1947. It is in 3 sections; begins at the end of WW I, setting up the characters. This is the romantic part of the story. Part 2 is set in Normandy between WW I and the beginning of WW II. There is a lot about the breeding of horses in this section, basically to show a way of life. 3rd part is the German invasion and the commandeering of the home of the heroine. Her home is commandeered several times by the Germans and near the end, as a hospital.

Actually is an interesting story. I remember reading it a long time ago and for some reason it popped into my mind a bit back. Had to dig it out and read it again. Not sure how to recommend this one. Parts would appeal to guys, especially those interested in breeding champion horses. Parts appeal to women because there is a romance running through. And parts perhaps to those who would like to read about some of the effects on French life in the Normandy region during German occupation.

Well Folks January 16, 2021 at 8:46 AM

Dorothy – I love novels that have a historic or biographical base.
I just received a copy of the Chanel Sisters and I will be digging into is soon but first I have to do my “homework” my contractor gave me as I’m about to delve into a master bath remodel.
A friend lent me the “China Doll” series by Lisa See which I also need to get busy and read. She thought I would like it as part of the location for the series is SF’s Chinatown which has a special place in my heart as my great great aunt was one of the first white female teachers to teach school in Chinatown. The Jean Parker school in SF is named for her.

weppin January 16, 2021 at 3:58 AM

I remember the good old days when we used to get our mail delivered everyday instead of 2 – 3 times a week.

At our house, too. Unfortunately, we cannot cut back the “donation” we make to buy stamps.

Sideline January 16, 2021 at 6:43 AM

what’s up with all the homeless/tents downtown Concord?

amy January 16, 2021 at 11:23 AM

I have noticed homeless tents across from the Port Chicago Safeway and in the bushes west of BART near the police station. I hope Concord doesn’t let this grow.

Sideline January 16, 2021 at 6:18 PM

@amy
That is what I am worried about. I drive by there everyday and it is growing…

Lambie January 16, 2021 at 6:52 PM

I thought they were putting homeless in motels.

Original G January 16, 2021 at 8:57 PM

Perhaps Concord could put up a white picket fence . . . .

Randy January 18, 2021 at 8:11 AM

… nothing new… there has always been a fair sized encampment in the creek area under Concord Ave and now in the creek area off 680 …. just more and more spread out now..

Justifiable languor January 18, 2021 at 9:00 AM

On Willow Pass Road between Starbucks and Wells Fargo, an angry homeless man stepped off the curb almost placing himself on my bumper.

Bella January 18, 2021 at 11:37 AM

I’ve been in Concord for years and I have never seen so many! I have to assume they’re just putting up their tents now.

GB January 16, 2021 at 7:32 AM

Does anyone have any information on the woman who walks up and down YVR in a neck brace? She does it in the morning, she does it at night often in the pitch black.

Does anyone know her and why she does this?

WC Resident January 16, 2021 at 11:22 AM

Which part of YVR? Do you have a cross street or a range of streets?

Otis Campbell January 16, 2021 at 1:04 PM

I see her in the mornings near Wiget Lane.

The Fractionator January 16, 2021 at 3:03 PM

This lady has been walking YV Road at all hours of the day and night for the last 2+ years. People have repeatedly ask question about her on this site or ND. She use to wear a neck brace but the last time I saw her she didn’t have it on. I’ve read that she has everything from back surgery to other medical issues. I’ve never stopped to talk to her but the Concord and WC Police are aware of her. My main concern for her is safety and I hope she doesn’t get hit by a vehicle.

GB January 16, 2021 at 5:34 PM

@TheFractionator.

That’s my concern too. I’ve seen her at 10:30 pm coming up on YVR towards Clayton.

I just want to know the route and reason.

Justifiable languor January 17, 2021 at 8:13 AM

Allowing her to endanger drivers using the road respectfully and lawfully.

I noticed a lot more “campers” in Todos Santos Plaza. Am I to understand they will be allowed to endanger the public and destroy the businesses in that area?

LimeRidge Larry January 17, 2021 at 8:41 AM

GB,

Are you some kind of walking police? If I wanted to walk up and down YVR at all hours of the night, I’ll do it and believe me I won’t be telling you or anyone else the REASON.

Stay in your own lane creampuff.

Dr. Jellyfinger January 17, 2021 at 1:52 PM

Aren’t we still under a 10 pm curfew?

I never really noticed since there’s practically nothing open that time of night anymore.

Bob January 16, 2021 at 9:14 AM

Just got my bill for the local paper–$571 for 24 weeks! I can remember when it was free and then went to a couple of dollrs a month–my, how times have changed–

Well Folks January 16, 2021 at 9:35 AM

Holy cow!!!!!! No wonder the news paper business is dying. $571 is ridiculous.

Strad January 16, 2021 at 10:35 AM

That’s pretty steep price for any paper.

Addlepate January 16, 2021 at 11:08 AM

Well, it costs a lot for them to only print 7 newspapers.

Pucky January 16, 2021 at 11:36 AM

Can not possibly be that much $$$

Otis Campbell January 16, 2021 at 1:02 PM

That sounds right. Mine was $267 for 13 weeks. I called and complained and they agreed to leave it at the old rate which is still too high.

Randy January 18, 2021 at 8:16 AM

… not only the price going up – service delivery very spotty – I had to call 5x out of 7 last week until I tracked down the Editor… oh BTW – even though their website says they stil have an office in Shadelands – they don’t – they moved out a loooooong time ago. I advised them of the website that needs to be changed 🙁

Snappy97 January 16, 2021 at 9:50 AM

Planning is always a good idea. Even though the last earthquake was a small one, do you have water and non-perishable foods on hand? I have always kept enough water for 2 days on hand and small amounts of MREs- courtesy of one of my brothers. 🙂

redrazor January 16, 2021 at 11:22 AM

Seems that nobody has talked about the issue that’s sure to be a huge concern in a couple of months!?! …. The Freaking Weather!?!?! We are half way through January, and still haven’t had ANY rain to speak of. It won’t be long before Gavin and all the other Henny Pennys will be screaming “the sky is falling, the sky is falling” (or not falling as it may be). Water rationing: neighbors turning in their neighbors for taking more than 1 shower a week; or flushing their toilets more than once a day; blaming Climate Change; etc.
Beware of “Disastrous Drought Disinformation”.

misterb January 16, 2021 at 11:26 AM

I haven’t seen the weekly “refresh” of the Local Politics topic since Christmas. Is it no longer a feature? Did I miss an announcement about its demise?

Kirkwood January 16, 2021 at 2:57 PM

Re: Local Politics, perhaps there little or no news to report. It seems like every politician in the country has been hiding from the public since COVID. They can do whatever they want without scrutiny. I suspect the forum will return when city councils return to public meetings.

Gittyup January 18, 2021 at 10:05 PM

From what I hear, and I don’t know because I haven’t checked it out yet, there is a very active local politics discussion on another local website for the Clayton/Concord area.

Pucky January 16, 2021 at 11:34 AM

Where’s the SMOKE in Clayton coming from???

Dr. Jellyfinger January 16, 2021 at 2:00 PM

Berkeley & Oakland mostly.

The Masked (and gloved) Poster January 16, 2021 at 11:39 AM

Had pizza recently, from Skip’s downtown Concord. Medium size, good flavor, TWENTY-FIVE BUCKS, for a medium pizza. That’s $25 for pizza. Had we eaten this inside, with beer and tip, the cost would have been a lot closer to $50 than $25. For a medium pizza. Nothing extra on it. $25.

Sancho Panza January 16, 2021 at 4:50 PM

Skips pizza has gone up significantly, even before COVID-19! Every time we’ve ordered the Family sized Prego the price is always 1-2 dollars more than the previous time…most recently just under $40! Special occasion pizza for us now…

WC Resident January 16, 2021 at 5:46 PM

Costco pizzas at $10 are a much better deal and you get a very large pizza. It used to be that you did not need to be a Costco member to get one. I don’t know if that changed for Concord since they moved the food court more inside the store.

Roz January 16, 2021 at 6:01 PM

Well, If you want a tasty pizza and at a good price, check out getting a Papa Murphy’s pizza. We get the Chicken-Bacon-Artichoke with Sausage added for $16. Yes, you have to bake it yourself.

Sideline January 16, 2021 at 6:16 PM

Cheap pizza = cheap quality

Dr. Jellyfinger January 17, 2021 at 8:12 PM

Real Pizza uses some expensive ingredients and labor, but it goes a long way too….so if you figure out how many people you’re feeding it’s still pretty economical… $25 bucks will buy a bucket of chicken with side orders, that’s not unreasonable.

Wait until the minimum wage goes up to $15.00 per hour.
Then you can really complain.

Bean Burner January 18, 2021 at 6:16 AM

PINKYS has been my pandemic pizza goto. hey still cook in proper oven rather than on conveyor belt. 22bucks for a two topping Med.

Justifiable languor January 18, 2021 at 8:12 AM

I quit MT.Mikes ten yrs ago for the same reason. The one near Diablo College was good, haven’t visited since I decided to frequent DiVinos off Taylor Blvd. Bambinos is open, Farm Bureau Rd. As for Skips, the Clayton one was best.

I was wary of Papa Murphy’s. Maybe I will give them a visit. I learned how to make my own so that is the cheapest .. Pretty good once you know to prebake the crust before adding the sauce. Bake, broil and finish up on the stove top. Easy!

Gittyup January 21, 2021 at 11:16 PM

I like Rocco’s at Oak Grove and Ygnacio in Walnut Creek.

Old Timer January 16, 2021 at 12:25 PM

Was that 571.00 for 24 weeks?Someone is ripping someone off.The internet is free.

Jojo Potato January 16, 2021 at 1:33 PM

The internet is not free. Everything you click on is making money for someone. Next thing you will be complaining about all the advertising you are seeing, Have a nice day.

Otis Campbell January 16, 2021 at 2:20 PM

You can’t access the e-edition of either the Times or Chronicle for free.

Jojo Potato January 18, 2021 at 7:38 AM

The East Bay Times is available for free on the CC library site. It’s images of the real paper. I find it kind of clumsy as a format but it is available.

bob January 16, 2021 at 1:02 PM

Yes it was $571.93 for 24 weeks–it also includes a $2.95 fee for processing–not surpiised at the $571, but come on, $$2.95 for processing my payment–think they have heard the last from me–

Kentucky Derby January 16, 2021 at 2:47 PM

I don’t know what paper you’re referring to, but a local paper (think hard) is $89.44 (Thurs — Sun) for 26 weeks, or $178.88 (7 days). Who would pay $571.93 for 24 weeks?

I’ve never heard of a newspaper that charges over a thousand dollars a year. Come in.

Kentucky Derby January 16, 2021 at 2:48 PM

$178.88 for 52 weeks — 7 days a week.

Bob January 16, 2021 at 3:34 PM

The paper is the East Bay Times–I’m looking at the statement and is says, 24 Weeks 7 Days $571.93–I kid ytou not!

Kentucky Derby January 16, 2021 at 5:06 PM

If you say so. The above figures are for the same paper. You can google it and see the same prices. Why would they bill you that much when the prices they quote online (for delivery – not digital) are reasonable?

I hope your bill is a misprint. If 26 weeks is $89.44, $71.93 for 24 weeks would make sense.

Randy January 18, 2021 at 8:19 AM

… nothing new… there has always been a fair sized encampment in the creek area under Concord Ave and now in the creek area off 680 …. just more and more spread out now..

Randy January 18, 2021 at 8:20 AM

…not a misprint

Addlepate January 16, 2021 at 9:39 PM

From East Bay Times website:

7-Day Home Delivery + Unlimited Digital Access
8 weeks for $14.00 per week.

So, $112 for 8 weeks. 24 weeks should be $336. Cancel your plan and sign up for the deal instead. Good luck.

Question How does the Legends restaurant at Diablo Creek golf course get away with outdoor dining and drinking. Was there today playing golf and was surprised to see that.Is it because the city of Concord owns the course?

Kirkwood January 18, 2021 at 10:00 AM

The City of Concord operates the golf course as an “Enterprise” that is supposed to make money, and The Legends is a concessionaire. The Sewer Dept and parts of Leisure Services are also Enterprises. Enterprises receive money from other sources than the General Fund.
I have no answer for the dining issue.

Good stuff. Thanks for that.

Kirkwood January 17, 2021 at 4:38 PM

Mary Fouts – For a huge selection of plant materials try Calaveras Nursery or next door, the somewhat smaller Lisa Arnold Nursery. Both are wholesale/retail and located near the junction of Hwy 680 and Calaveras Rd (Sunol). I had my yard landscaped about a dozen years ago and that’s where the contractor got the plant materials.

Mary Fouts January 19, 2021 at 1:47 PM

Kirkwood – Thank you kindly for the recommendations! I looked at their websites, sure looks like they have a wonderful selection of plants, trees, etc. I’ll plan a trip with Jim to check the nurseries out in the near future.

Great dogs and fries – nice folks to deal with. Hope they are ok ….
Any news here?
Thanks

Kirkwood January 19, 2021 at 10:32 AM

Seems like I saw here that the Hot Dog Palace had closed. Hopefully, when the economy improves they will find a location and start fresh. I suspect that a lot of businesses that had to close will be back, except perhaps some that were already marginal.

Original G January 19, 2021 at 2:41 PM

Drove by Concord’s famous white picket fence this afternoon, could use some attention.

Highway 4 construction by Buchanan Field, either raise speed limit in construction zone or start enforcing the 45 mph limit. Was doing 50 and almost got rear ended by speeders three times. It’s not safe.

This isn’t the politics thread and I won’t turn it into that but asked to choose between a basically decent if ineffective man and what we had, from a practical standpoint, we did good. Life up here in Yolo if I’m truthing is lonely. Social distancing and masks really blunt my charming effect. So do restraining orders. 😝
My German is coming along I guess, trying to learn to play guitar for some reason. Apparently the planet doesn’t have enough annoying middle aged white guys with guitars. The IRS and the CA DOJ are mad at me. One day I’m gonna be gone and they’ll probably have to lay people off. And I’m mad at my lawyer so nothing changed there. Let’s see what else….I found a fantastic sub $15 Cabernet but I’m not gonna tell you the name of until I come down and raid your stores.
Pizza here sucks. Sorry I tried. Tried for two decades but your pizza sucks.
My rifle range is 7.2 miles from my door to firing line. It’s a dump, but it’s my dump now. I try to be patient with fellow shooters and cut rate ROs, but as long as I don’t get muzzle-swept I guess I can bite my tongue. Again, 7.2 miles and a $5 fee with a membership buys some patience. 😎
I tried marinating some mushrooms for a kabob in some cheap whiskey and they basically melted. Opposite of a life hack I guess. Whiskey wasn’t too good either. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Got rid of my German import and bought a pickup. I get pointed and laughed at less this way up here. Sucks when I want to pass someone though. Now to clock one of these fools and get me a MAGA hat! 🤪 Be well! Claycord.com rocks!

Can anyone recommend a low cost (if possible) Veterinarian around the Concord area?

miguel January 22, 2021 at 10:38 AM

I have been taking my cats to Alpine Veterinary Hospital on Clayton Road for years (going back to when they had an office on Treat, when they moved down near Balhan on Clayton, and at their current location now).Dr. Virk is incredibly kind and they have always taken great care of me, and family and friends that I have referred to them.

Silva January 22, 2021 at 12:05 PM

Alpine is the only one I’ve used out here (twice). Once when a cat had a UTI, a second time for euthanasia for an ancient kitty. I’m blessed that our strictly indoor cats are very healthy (knocking wood here). I agree with Miguel about Dr. Virk, he seemed genuinely kind and caring with my sick kitty, the one with the infection who could be helped. When we took the ancient one in for our good-byes, a tech (please forgive me if that isn’t what they’re called) was very sweet and caring, and did all the prep work in advance of a different vet who just came in to push the plunger, which we were fine with because he had an unusual bedside manner and we both thought perhaps he had the DTs. I might’ve said he appeared to have a medical condition that made him have a pronounced tremor, but his slightly off manner made me think DTs. I could definitely be wrong though, he was in the room for maybe a minute. Both times I thought the cost was reasonable, though the euthanasia was substantially higher than the UTI.
