UC Campuses Planning To Resume In-Person Classes For Fall 2021 Semester

January 11, 2021 19:00 pm · 26 comments

The University of California announced Monday that it’s planning for in-person classes to resume during the fall 2021 semester at all 10 of its campuses.

UC officials credited the widening availability of coronavirus vaccine doses for students, staff and faculty as the driving force behind announcing plans to reopen.

“As the University continues to monitor the evolution of the pandemic, we are also carefully planning a safe return to in-person classes,” UC President Dr. Michael Drake said. “Current forecasts give us hope that in the fall our students can enjoy a more normal on-campus experience.”

Additional details about school health and safety requirements as well as starting dates will be announced by individual campuses, according to UC officials.

Oh, please January 11, 2021 at 7:18 PM

I like how college, which is not required that anyone attend, is going back in person. Meanwhile our local districts (of which in person is an actual written requirement for them to provide) probably won’t even be back in person at any point during the next school year. Makes total sense in backward Bay Area land apparently.

@ I can not.
Looks like your cup is half empty.
I’ve been able to appreciate some intelligent discussions here on Claycord. There are winers but I do also read many very thought out posts.
Yes there are the trolls and since everyone’s anon it makes for a too easy expression of things sometimes.

All year long I’ve been watching protests that burn and destroy property without a care from the Left. Even Federal buildings, police and their property have been wounded and burned. So this”protest” thing isn’t unique to the White House.

Maybe it would be nice for us to hear the teachers politic a bit to support returning to the classroom?

We’re all a little frustrated. Our State is in shambles. Prisoners get shots before the elderly? Crazy.
How about giving it to prisoners 65 and above?
In fact prisoners even get unemployment checks. Crazy again. Millions wasted away. Who’s minding the store?
(But don’t question voting tabulation)

Jail has become a revolving door and now the criminals know it. They’re booked and released. We all know that Covid has become the get out of jail card. I think the prisoners knew that before Newsom did. Ha!
And really great, release people who have proven that they can’t follow instructions.

And I’m happy to have Claycord. Without it about all I could find out is that there were over 100 homicides in Oakland last year.

Try filling your cup a little. Things might taste better to you.

@ I Can Not

Just taking one of your points:

2. Last year, psychotic cult members from BLM, antifa, and other left-wing groups stormed the cities of this country to protest a non-existent problem created by the left destroying the country’s heritage statuary, rioting and looting, murdering police and others, taking over cities, burning buildings, and left-wing political hacks didn’t just remain mostly silent regarding this attack on democracy, they openly and unabashedly supported it.

JJ January 12, 2021 at 5:57 AM

@ I Can Not
I have been censored here, too.
And I don’t call people whores or tell them they have dementia.
What gives?

To Do List January 12, 2021 at 11:06 AM

JJ: What I recall from the “I can not” post was a hate and rage filled tirade lunging at conservatives as cult members, against either the UC system or teachers (I actually don’t remember), against those who question the covid lockdown, and more. It was the sort of thing I might expect some nut to be yelling to ramp himself up for a physical fight. If you like that sort of thing, perhaps you could go to a bar and find an angry drunk to listen to.

Chuq January 12, 2021 at 12:36 PM

It’s true, anti-police brutality protests have resulted in a lot of damage.and something like 19 deaths.

But what about hate crime data as defined by the F.B.I.? In 2019, the F.B.I. collected data on 7,314 criminal incidents motivated by bias toward race or ethnicity or gender identity in 2019. That was the third year in a row with more than 7,000 such crimes being reported (and the agency notes that it believes these are extremely under-reported.

What should be done to address racially motivated crime in the US?

Aunt Barbara January 11, 2021 at 9:57 PM

True ,,, if they open… then all will have to open or it’s “dem”scrimination

Please sign the Newsom recall. This guy is really messed up and ruining our sate and lives!

JJ January 12, 2021 at 6:09 AM

Not going to sign the recall petition.

Just got a piece of mail from a republican named Del Beccaro of Newport Beach. Is he related to the Del Beccaro from Walnut Creek who went ahead and built an over priced library after the People voted it down three times?

Anyway, this letter asked for money, of course, to recall Newsom.

I got ten letters from Trumps campaign last year and five from Melania, all asking for money. Very elaborate pieces of mail. Funny, republicans don’t trust mail in ballots, but they can mail out millions of junk mail asking for money.

So this recall started with Republicans?

even coumo, the guy who killed so many seniors but sending them back to their group homes to recover which resulted in the deaths of so many others is saying it is time to open the economy up. then again someone told me that the stores are open, so i guess everyone who is out of work must already be back to work? and maybe the kids who weren’t going to school maybe are again? did someone click their heels together and fix this whole plandemic?

God Bless!

Where is the bottom? January 12, 2021 at 6:41 AM

A little ‘did you know’…

Did you know the moderna vaccine (1 of 2 currently approved) only offers immunity for about 1 year? (See link below)

Follow up inquiry, if the vaccine only last 1 year, do we really think this is going away within that year, or do we now have a perpetual boogie man always lurking in the shadows?

“ Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia”

Chuq January 12, 2021 at 2:01 PM

I get the flu vaccine each year. It hasn’t eradicated the flu from the planet – that’s not what it was intended to do (and some years we learn that that year’s vaccine was less successful than others).

Who told you the COVID vaccine would be a one and done deal?

where is the bottom? January 12, 2021 at 3:13 PM

@chuq

so wait…this is like the flu after all? Now I’m confused.

I know that wasn’t what you were saying, but more importantly, if this isn’t going away (if there are articles on it, politicians know the same), how does this function with opening the state back up? Are we never going to open up? are they going to start mandating covid shots? if yes on covid, why not on flu shots?

I guess my overarching concern is that all signs are pointing towards this being around for a while (if not forever), if that is the case…what is the long term plan? How does the long term plan look different that what we are currently doing? The government owes it to people to tell them the truth.

RANDOM TASK January 12, 2021 at 9:25 AM

your witnessing fraud and the demise of he country

and watching it

not one group has stood up to the fraud and corruption from the left

including the judges who faced with overwhelming evidence threw out the cases

judges who allowed 3 more days of corruption to the election

judges who allowed changing of election policy months before the election

all these judges are leftists

its obvious the states used the virus to corrupt the election

these things happen in occupied and controlled countries

welcome to fraud and corruption to be a daily thing

your children will be proud you threw away freedom and liberty

for ???

wait why do dem voters want corruption and fraud

what does it get you and your family ???

can any corrupt dem voter tell us why you cheer for corruption and how it helps your family and future ????

Chuqc January 12, 2021 at 2:08 PM

So were the Republicans who won elections in these states in November also fraudulent? Do those Republicans need to lose their seats in Congress until there is a recount?

Itsme January 12, 2021 at 9:45 AM

Timothy White the Chancellor of the CSUs announced somewhere before Thanksgiving that the CSU system would be going back to face-to-face in Fall 2021. I don’t know why this was not widely reported, but I received an email as I’m affiliated with one of the Bay Area campuses.

I can understand the frustration with the lockdowns and all, but the pushback on a return to normal and opening up the economy by these same doubters is astonishing.

I Can Not January 12, 2021 at 12:40 PM

Lol to “to do list” who claimed my post was hate and rage filled. First of all, I have never been in a physical altercation in my 36 years of life. Can you say the same? Liberal minded folks are typically passive and prefer to solve problems without violence. Before you say it, yes, there was some violence in the BLM protests, much of which was instigated by police. There are hours and hours of footage of people protesting peacefully only to be taken out by batons, rubber bullets and flash bangs. Don’t tell me you think the behavior in the BLM protests is condemnable but what happened at the Capitol was okay. PS- it’s okay to condemn ALL violence and destruction, regardless of who commits it. That’s what I do. None of it is okay or acceptable or excusable.

Let’s define cult, shall we? A cult is: a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object, a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing. I’d say that the Trump supporters who besieged the Capitol building, destroyed property, PUT UP GALLOWS in front of the Capitol all in name of one man and his unfounded claims of election fraud would be cult-like behavior. I don’t even care for Biden much, let alone would risk my life in his name and break into federal buildings on his behalf. The cult of Trump has idolized a grifter and created a misguided movement to protect their chosen one. They talked of putting bullets into the heads of those who oppose him. They said they were ready to die for him (at least 3 did). This is a dangerous cult. History is being made and will be well documented.
Furthermore, I don’t drink at all (never was a big drinker, but now I refrain entirely). I don’t yell. I don’t ramp myself up for physical altercation. Maybe you thought I did because you do? Maybe you had some kind of projection onto me for the things you do yourself? It’s okay. It’s not uncommon.

What my original post was was a defense of teachers who have been busting their butts to provide meaningful education for the children they teach, regardless of what the followers of this page said. I also reminded people who seem to have forgotten that colleges are filled with adults who can comply with regulations and recommendations. I also said there are far more important things to worry about, like cult members who took over our Capitol. Did it hurt your feelings? Do you need a safe place? Does it make you feel icky to associate with psychotic people who think one incoherent idiot is their one true savior? It’s okay. You can denounce Trump and still be a conservative, because I have a secret, lots of people don’t know this… Trump isn’t a conservative. Trump isn’t a Republican. Trump serves one cause: his own.

Don’t worry, to do list. There’s still time for you. You can come to your senses. You can recognize the utter hypocrisy in your beliefs. I wish you well.

Where is the bottom? January 12, 2021 at 2:18 PM

I’m glad you responded again.

I think your message perfectly encapsulates many of the issues we have in this country at this time. I think too many times, we want to hold the other party accountable for their actions while giving our own ‘team’ a pass. Call a spade a spade.

1) you say you condemn all violence, but when it comes to BLM you effectively give them a pass and blame the police…did the police help organize the looting in Walnut Creek over the summer? If you truly want people to believe what you have to say…hold each side truly accountable.

2) what happened at the capital was terrible…but similar to BLM, while not all that support the BLM support the chaos they brought…not all that support/supported the president supported what occurred at the capital…to paint with such a broad brush is intellectually unfair.

3) As to what the groups are saying, we are seeing plenty of people question the election results (I haven’t seen one shred of real evidence, so I not believing it)…fairly sure in 2016/2017 PLENTY of people questioned those results…how many people said “not my president”, but now the shoe is on the other foot and any other than complete compliance and acceptance is viewed as sedition. As to displays of violence…Kathy Griffin? How about some of the pure vitriol that we see coming from the left over the years, no nothing? plenty of twitter and facebook accounts were used as part of occupying land in WA over the summer…remember the one where the said that police weren’t welcome…wasn’t that effectively sedition against the government…sure, we are talking degrees of sedition between this and the capital, but isn’t it shades of the same color? If you can hold one accountable, why not the other?

4) As to teachers…while the teachers have had to learn new ways to interact with their students, i know many that want to return to the class room, some are actually thinking of quitting if it doesn’t change…that being said, it isn’t the federal government that has to support teachers…its the state government…additionally, don’t forget that just about a month ago the Oakland public school teachers union had a rolling protest against going back into the class room. Studies are out that kids really aren’t sources of transmission…studies are out that public school kids are falling farther and farther behind…so while you stand unabashed in defense of teachers, some of those same teachers (not all) are willing to let kids fall between the cracks…again, maybe start holding everyone accountable for their actions and not just those you don’t agree with politically.

I can not January 12, 2021 at 3:24 PM

1. I condemn ALL looting, rioting, destruction of property. I condemn anyone who participated in a BLM protest who was destructive or violent, I condemn anyone who feigned they were at protests to support BLM but chose to loot/destroy. I don’t excuse anyone.

2. You are who you surround yourself with. As recently as today, Trump refused to take responsibility for the riots at the Capitol. He has also said that “this is what happens when… (insert whatever victim card he’s pulling at the time), thus excusing and even defending the behavior of these people. If today, January 12, 2021, someone still supports trump, I consider them wrong. They are willfully ignorant or accepting of morally unacceptable behavior. No one should support him anymore. Full stop.

3. Again, if you’re wrong you’re wrong. The FBI investigated KG. What she did was wildly inappropriate. You do need to consider: KG is a comedian. She’s not the president. Again, I’m not excusing her, but I would argue that she doesn’t have thousands to millions of loyal followers who would carry out her wishes or suggestions. Our country’s president should be held to a far higher standard than a D list celebrity (which, ironically, he used to be. What a wild time to be alive). If he doesn’t want to be held accountable for his actions and widespread influence, he should never have even run for president. I honestly believe that Trump’s moral compass is broken. He fails to see how he is wrong in every instance. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard him admit fault or take responsibility for his mistakes. His hubris is dangerous, as evidenced last week.

4. Almost every teacher I know is desperate to go back to school… they just will not sacrifice their safety or lives to do so. Unions are negotiating safety protocol to be utilized to protect the staff and students. Yes, at a younger age, Covid is less of a vector for infection, but how many teachers are vulnerable? How many teachers educate those over 11? How many schools have ages that are mixed, how many kids share their homes with older siblings or relatives? All of these are factors to consider. In high school, the logistics are nearly impossible. Kids switch classes up to 6 times a day. They roam campus, they’re basically roving Petri dishes. Have you ever experienced Norovirus during prom season? I have. It’s gross and unpleasant. I threw up in the dang Academy of Sciences, and then on my colleague’s lawn (like I said before, I don’t drink, in case you were wondering). I have lupus. I’m among the 25+% of staff members who are high risk. No, I don’t think I should be catered to or put in a bubble, but I should have some semblance of safety in my workplace. I love my job and I love my students, but I don’t love either enough to risk my life for them.

5. (Just for fun) I think it’s important to recognize that most of us aren’t radicalized one way or the other, and many of us share the same ideals. I love my country, I love how diverse we are, how much we have grown and changed in my lifetime. That love is not lessened or negated because I see glaring flaws within it. It’s not changed because I wish, hope, and fight for something better. The whole idea of “make America great again” is flawed, simply because it suggests that we move backwards. That we embrace a time in the past where we were less developed, less inclusive, less safe for all kinds. When it comes to America, I want to look forward. I want to make America better than it’s ever been, not reverse to a time when someone else thinks it was “great.” We have always had parts that were great, and we have always needed to grow, progress, learn, and move FORWARD. I’m hopeful for the future. I look forward to the resilience and progression of this nation. I hope you’ll do the same.

Chris January 12, 2021 at 3:58 PM

I can’t wait to read this Summer how they’ll have to move the date to reopen back until the following Spring of 2022 just to be extra safe after Gavin blows the vaccine rollout. Don’t worry because the Dems got your back: Its Trump’s fault.

Student January 12, 2021 at 4:30 PM

They said this last semester. This is a trick so student’s that are accepted to UC’s in these upcoming months commit to one and go there. Then August comes and students are moving into dorms, they’re going to change it to remote learning.

ZZ January 12, 2021 at 5:42 PM

Yep, that’s EXACTLY what they’re doing. That’s how they’re going to keep making their money.
