Yesterday, Governor Newsom announced that all sectors other than retail and essential operations would be closed in regions of the State where less than 15 percent of ICU beds are available under a new Regional Stay Home Order.

The Health Officers for the Counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and Santa Clara as well as the City of Berkeley are jointly announcing that they will implement the State’s Regional Stay Home Order now.

“We are seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations here in Contra Costa County and across our region,” said Contra Costa County Health Officer Dr. Christopher Farnitano. “The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in our county has doubled in just the past couple of weeks, and we are at risk of exceeding our hospital capacity later this month if current trends continue.”

Bay Area Health Officers will implement the State’s Regional Stay At Home Order as of Sunday December 6, 2020. The new restrictions will remain in place until January 4, 2021.

People are ordered to stop socializing with people outside their home (even outdoors), non-essential travel has been banned, and barbershops, nail salons, bars and wineries will have to close by Sunday.

Retail businesses will be limited to 20% capacity, and restaurants will be take-out/delivery only.

All playgrounds for children will also be closed.

Anyone who travels outside the region, or meets with anyone outside the region, will be ordered to quarantine for 14 days.

Or else?

Bob December 4, 2020 - 1:45 PM - 1:45 PM

“Or we will be very, very angry with you. And, we will write you a letter telling you how angry we are.”

Name that film

April December 4, 2020 - 3:12 PM - 3:12 PM

@Bob
I love Team America

Lari December 4, 2020 - 4:48 PM - 4:48 PM

I heard that same line in my head. But I wish I could laugh right now.

parent December 4, 2020 - 1:18 PM - 1:18 PM

Well … time for civil disobedience.

I will celebrate with my family, outside of my home as I consider that essential travel! We are going to ‘mostly’ peacefully protest this ban by standing around a Christmas tree singly loudly our protest song that might sound like Jingle Bells!

Captain Bebops December 4, 2020 - 1:45 PM - 1:45 PM

Yes, elsewhere in the world like the UK and Germany there are protests against restrictions with crowds numbering in the thousands. Time for that to happen here.

I think the pandemic is a con game with more and more people beginning to catch on. They did an unbelievable jobs of hypnotizing a portion of the population into believing covid was going to kill us all unless we all “behaved”. Did they not understand the public has been schooled to stand up against authoritarianism for decades? We weren’t born yesterday (but some seem to be).

Student December 4, 2020 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

People like you are the reason I don’t get to see my grandparents anymore because they both died from COVID. How much more selfish can you be. The ignorance of the people in this town and on this website is incredible. If we all just followed the rules in the beginning we wouldn’t have lost hundreds of thousands of lives. It’s crazy to think that you want to disobey this order just because you don’t like it how hard is it to stay inside for one month but if you care so much more about making a point than you care for American lives keep disobeying this order and don’t where your mask. Keep embarrassing this country and yourself.

Captain Bebops December 4, 2020 - 1:54 PM - 1:54 PM

@Student, what makes you think we didn’t follow the rules? Sorry about your grandparents but there were better ways to handle this alleged pandemic.

EnoughZnough December 4, 2020 - 1:59 PM - 1:59 PM

So hospitals are just making up this business about having only 25% ICU capacity remaining? Wake up.

Anonymous December 4, 2020 - 2:04 PM - 2:04 PM

Student,

You have been duped. If you’re relying on a think piece of paper placed over your mouth and nose to prevent you from death, then you have lost all power to think critically.

I wonder if your grandparents died from COVID. There are so many false positives floating around. Moreover, it’s interesting that the flu has almost been eradicated during this time (Sarc alert)!

Do you have the power to control who dies? I submit you do not. If you want to stay hunkered down at home wearing a mask, have at it.That’s just existing, not living.

parent December 4, 2020 - 3:06 PM - 3:06 PM

Glad Student that you think you know me … you do not. I wear my mask when I walk into a business – EVERY TIME!

Selfish? Again, you failed here as well. When was the last time you helped someone in need? For me, today. The time before that about 4 days ago. How bout prayed for someone, for me today.

Ignorant? No, again you are wrong. Are you used to it yet? I am educated individual who has studied vaccines and airborne pathogens and how they play into evacuation and SIP plans.

Crazy? I have almost followed every aspect of this tyranny since it started … what is crazy are fools like you who think this is normal and acceptable practice. I am done.

As for my support of America, yeah, most of what I have bought was made in the USA. I make it a point if I am buying to look for that, do you? Do you waive your flag? Are you proud of country, even when they screw up? Well, I am. I stand for the National Anthem, every time! I place my hand on my heart during the pledge. I will fight for this country! Will you, student? Or are you all talk?

Sorry December 4, 2020 - 3:33 PM - 3:33 PM

@student I am so sorry that you lost your grandparents to COVID and I’m sorry that these people are saying what they are saying. I also lost family to COVID and it is devastating. PLease do not take what they are saying to heart. I am wishing you the best and my condolences to your family

Badge1104 December 4, 2020 - 5:16 PM - 5:16 PM

I do believe that Biden and Harris are loving our ‘long dark winter’ so they can look good when it finally lifts. They’ll probably take credit for the vaccination too. Regarding Gavin newsom’s orders, we better monitor to make sure he keeps his restaurant and winery closed and that there’s no back room parties for elite Democrats who want to break the law.ditto for Dianne feinstein and Nancy pelosi’s business interests. let’s make sure they’re all closed too!

Oh, please December 4, 2020 - 7:48 PM - 7:48 PM

Student- sorry your grandparents died, but it was THEIR responsibility to protect themselves and no anyone else’s. You should be mad at them for not staying at home to protect themselves. Everyone else needs to live their lives. It is like saying that a diabetic can’t have sugar, so NO ONE ELSE in the county can have sugar. That doesn’t make much sense, does it. Well, neither does your misplaced anger nor your rant.

Sorry December 4, 2020 - 10:10 PM - 10:10 PM

@oh, please how do you know that they if were protecting themselves or not? You don’t know them so don’t assume. It could’ve been someone else not protecting themselves and gave it to them while they were trying their best to protect themselves we don’t know so let @student alone. They are mourning their grandparents. We do not know the situation just leave it at that.

Oh, please December 4, 2020 - 11:59 PM - 11:59 PM

Sorry- NOT sorry when someone is out there spreading false info. Everyone has to take responsibly for themselves! Just like you don’t know the other side of what you are saying. And how do you know that is wasn’t the grandparents that were at fault. Hypocrite is thy name.

Sorry December 5, 2020 - 5:40 PM - 5:40 PM

Like I said dont assume cuz we don’t know the situation. But this person is angry and sad that their grandparents died from it, we should be giving them our condolences not our opinions. Nothing anyone says will change their minds, it will probably only make them more angry. It is just very heartbreaking to know that their grandparents died and many people including some of my family passed and their deaths could’ve been prevented. I appreciate the people who take the time to make sure they are trying their best to prevent others from getting covid. I can tell you right now in many other countries like in Nicaragua where there is no prevention in place because their president just does not care about their people. So please lets just all be good people especially now during the holidays and give our condolences to @student. I hope everyone is being safe

addlepate December 5, 2020 - 6:37 PM - 6:37 PM

Student, good job on the trolling. Your grandparents did not die from COVID. What made it obvious trolling was the feigned outrage in every sentence. Could be better though, giving you 7 out of 10, would have been a 6 but you got a lot of people to respond to your fakery.

Mitch December 4, 2020 - 1:18 PM - 1:18 PM

“We” didn’t do anything, this was inevitable. Remember Joe’s promise of a dark winter? It’s here. If you voted Democrat, you asked for this. Congratulations!

BernieM December 4, 2020 - 1:21 PM - 1:21 PM

Yep, the same people who want to open up without restrictions have caused this lockdown.
Mask, distance, wash hands, no large gatherings. Its really simple, and not that inconvenient.
Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Martin December 5, 2020 - 12:55 PM - 12:55 PM

Everyone seems to have forgotten that all of these preventive measures were never about keeping people from getting ill, only about keeping all of us from getting ill at the same time– flattening the curve, if you will.

Marco December 6, 2020 - 5:56 PM - 5:56 PM

WC December 4, 2020 - 1:25 PM - 1:25 PM

Is our illustrious Sheriff going to enforce this garbage?

mamabear December 4, 2020 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

Unbelievable! Most Cali Sheriffs won’t enforce. I doubt our sheriff will either.

Cynic December 4, 2020 - 3:07 PM - 3:07 PM

Of course our sheriff will enforce this. He is a brown shirt in lock step (Goose Step) with our Soros bought and sold DA. Where do conservatives go to organize a protest? This is new territory for those of us that tolerate the tantrums of the left until we are pushed too far.

Patriot December 4, 2020 - 4:38 PM - 4:38 PM

Cynic – The LAST thing our Sheriff would do is side with the brown shirts, Sorros or the DA – But we live amongst them. We live in left wingut Contra Costa which has been poisoned by people from Alameda and SF moving here over the years.

If he stood up, he would be impeached/recalled in 2 seconds. The REAL problem is the the mayors, council members supervisors and the people who voted for them.

When a restaurant owner decides to disobey, the CITY, COUNTY or ABC revokes the business licenses and Liquor Licenses. The Health Dept revokes their Health Permits. The Health Department works for the County Supervisors ! They hired the Director !

Then come the fines.

The local politicians must declare their cities/counties “Sanctuary Cities/Counties” – FREEDOM ZONES where their local police will not enforce, and the business licensing Dept. will not levy fines.

The County Supervisors need to FIRE the Director of the Health Dept.

The Sheriff will not enforce any of this sh*t. But the politicians are safe in their little Zoom chat rooms until the people rise up and pressure the politicians to act.

Mayors, Council members and Supervisors are hiding behind the Health Department.

ALL of those who don’t stand up right now need to go !

If you want to make a change, pressure the Mayors. They set the agendas. They are the most local. We can pressure them one by one. They need to feel the heat right now.

Cynic – Start the movement. Pick out a Mayor in the most conservative city in Contra Costa. Put up a web site to organize us. We can all put the heat on him until they stand up. Big rallies of all the conservatives in the county at City Hall. Go for it !

I’ll be there. And so will all the Claycordians that know this is unacceptable.

MAYOR – Thank you again for allowing free speech on your platform. You are a true Patriot for respecting our God given right of Free Speech.

God Bless you !

Jan Smuts December 4, 2020 - 1:25 PM - 1:25 PM

Not a chance I will comply. Join us for church in my garage.

e.bunners December 4, 2020 - 2:41 PM - 2:41 PM

Oldman: do you even realize just how juvenile your response is?
Oooooh you’re the BIG MAN who won’t comply.
Your exaggerated and self indulgent comment here leaves nothing more than your stupidity; how do you think this virus is still hanging around?
You know:
They say you can’t fix stupid…
Apparently, you can’t Quarantine it either…
GOOᗪ ᒪᑌᑕK and stay out of our hospitals when you and your family members can’t breathe.

Noj December 4, 2020 - 3:23 PM - 3:23 PM

Well look at all of the nonsensical panic here. Virus has a 99.96% recovery rate and an approved vaccine. Hide in your house sheep. I am a free born American. Stay home and hide under your bed. Look at the total death count and then look at who is dying…90 year old assisted living patients with underlying symptoms (gee, what symptoms might a 90 year old have?). You really think the politicians who are scaring you follow their own rules? It’s been fun debating you…not. “Man falls off ladder and dies from Covid.” You believed even that.

Mary Fouts December 4, 2020 - 1:27 PM - 1:27 PM

This will be the final nail in the coffin for many restaurants, beauty/nail salons, and barber shops. Many restaurants spent thousands of dollars for outside dining, only to have it shut down with less than 2 days notice, and over the holidays, too. Nothing like having to lay off employees (yet again, in some cases) 21 days before Christmas.

This change doesn’t impact me personally or professionally. But I do feel badly for the so many businesses that will likely permanently close.

Shiloh December 4, 2020 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

Same. I’m not affected, but feel sick to my stomach for the restaurant owners/employees, salon industry owners and workers and everyone else who’s “nonessential” 😒 This is wrong

The Fearless Spectator December 4, 2020 - 2:05 PM - 2:05 PM

Ditto. I admire people who were brave enough to own their own business. Really sad.

PESFG December 4, 2020 - 2:58 PM - 2:58 PM

It no longer comes as a surprise that these orders are being passed without thinking of the effects they would have on other parts of society. There are people here arguing that people go out without wearing a mask and not keeping their distance but I don’t believe them. I have only seen the homeless not wearing masks.

The Realist December 4, 2020 - 5:12 PM - 5:12 PM

If only we had some form of universal basic income safety net or even a Congress that gave half a damn to pass stimulus for the little people and small businesses. Oh, hold on, Congress needs to ram through another federal judge real quick.

CAtoTX December 4, 2020 - 9:22 PM - 9:22 PM

@The Realist if you want another stimulus check talk to the DemocRats and they’ll them to not include funding to get poorly run states out of their deficits and actually focus on the people.

miguel December 4, 2020 - 1:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Outdoor dining ban too, restaurants are take out only.

DLo December 4, 2020 - 1:30 PM - 1:30 PM

I’m sorry, but this is idiotic. I’m in favor of mask wearing, reduced capacities and social distancing and not in favor of the lockdown.

Five counties are going to carry the lockdown load for the entire eleven Counties in the Bay Area Region? San Mateo, Sonoma, Solano, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Napa are free of the lockdown as of now.

Tugboat December 4, 2020 - 1:45 PM - 1:45 PM

Guess what? No lockdown for Gavin’s winery.

Bob December 4, 2020 - 1:47 PM - 1:47 PM

Solono County businesses are going to make out like bandits this year, especially the Nut Tree.

EnoughZnough December 4, 2020 - 2:01 PM - 2:01 PM

If the projections are correct, just wait a few weeks and they will all follow.

DLo December 4, 2020 - 5:01 PM - 5:01 PM

@Enough,

The framework that was set up is on a REGIONAL basis, not county by county. When the REGION reaches less than 15% capacity then the lockdown is supposed to occur. This allows counties to move patients to other counties in the region so that not one is overloaded.

What has occurred here is that five of the counties went rogue and decided to lock everything down, thereby shouldering the burden for the other six counties. The five locked down counties share a disproportionate burden of job losses at Christmas while the others can keep their businesses open.

Here’s a link from SFGate explaining how it is supposed to work on a REGIONAL basis: https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Newsom-California-shelter-in-place-order-purple-15773220.php

Newellian December 4, 2020 - 5:38 PM - 5:38 PM

Yep – No shut down for Gavin’s winery. need to get the North Bay Counties to go along with this. Good old Governor “Do As I Say, NOT as I do” will continue his wine making ways…..

RT December 4, 2020 - 1:39 PM - 1:39 PM

I wonder if the police, whom they are against and want to defund, will enforce these policies. Will nescum and the health officers come to enforce the themselves? This will not end well for the for the newscum…no wonder they put those health officers in protective custody…anyone who travels outside the region or meets with anyone outside the region will be ordered to quarantine for 14 days? Never thought I’d be living that in America…

BORbeliever December 4, 2020 - 2:58 PM - 2:58 PM

Lynnie Morgan December 4, 2020 - 1:44 PM - 1:44 PM

Why is no one talking about how state officials
Have ignored the rules, attending parties and keeping their own interests open (like wineries where they have financial interests). I’m so
Sick of CA officials dictating. I’m so sad to seeing families ruined by this pandemic- a pandemic where they call so many deaths Covid and add them into the Covid numbers when they are NOT Covid deaths all
All so that they can line their own pockets! I know the pandemic is real but it’s hard to trust the numbers or respect the rules when there is so much inaccuracy!!!

All given to you by democrats
Democrat loyal doctors

Your compliance is a bit to obvious

Americans are not followers we are free to express our freedoms in American

Expressing following of the government’s hysteria like democrat bunnies

Your not even rolling the constitution lol
Your spewing communist and Marxist and socialist hate

Stop being used

I forgot democrat followers allow their children to be legally abused by dem politicians bills that we did not vote on
And voted for more taxes and legalized theft

So your rants about follow the rules
Are mute
Unless your showing us democrats are hypocrites

Then we’ll yes point proven

Sandy W. December 4, 2020 - 2:32 PM - 2:32 PM

What are you asking for proof of? How many have died? How many are very sick due to Covid-19? They exhaustion of front line medical personnel who are dealing with this? Or are you trying to find proof of how it is and isn’t spread? How to stay safe, and keep from infecting others? There is much data out there, I am just not sure what data you are looking for. It is true many have been infected but without symptoms to let them know that they can infect others. You throw around labels and disrespect. Science is not democratic nor republican, it is the search for provable fact. Sometimes science gets it wrong, like the Earth is the center of the universe. It takes further search and looking into the data to come to the fact. Same has happened with the science around Covid-19. The whole world is suffering with the deaths, illness, and social challenges this virus has caused. I am not sure where your need to go out. gather with others, work at your job, and live your best life trumps the right of others to not be possibly infected by asymptomatic you. I am willing to forgo some pleasurable activities to keep myself and others well. I am willing to not add to the front-line medical providers load. You are not. We all navigate these times as best as we are able. We are all human and make mistakes. I would not want anyone to see all my mistakes on the news every night, so I would not run for public office. So do our leaders/ politicians of both parties make mistakes/ justify behavior/ forget to lead? Yes. We elect our leaders to do the business of the country, state, county, city. So there will always be some rules we did not directly vote on because our elected leader voted to approve it. This is how the system works for voters of both parties. If you did not vote, then you get what you voted for. If you voted, and the leaders enacted this rule, you voted for it.

Yet another conservative who doesn’t understand that RAtM is a left wing band. It’s astounding how many people fall into that category.

RAtM hasn’t spoken out against the Covid health restrictions. They’ve had to cancel shows because of the pandemic, but they aren’t whining about it. They aren’t a contrarian band that automatically rejects everything they are told.

BeenieM doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He thinks these silly dictates for the masses are capable of stopping the spread of a virus. They’re completely void of objective science. The virus is going to continue to spread just as all viruses do. Protect those who are TRULY at risk and let those who aren’t live their lives. This will help us achieve herd immunity which will make the REAL difference, not silly cloth masks and other arbitrary nonscientific voodoo!

Savagette December 4, 2020 - 3:36 PM - 3:36 PM

@BernieM Just shut up already. People will go to their families, friends if they want regardless of what the governor or health dept. orders. You are the slow learner. Guidelines are guidelines. The only thing minimized with a BS lockdown is activities in public places such as stores and other businesses where 90% of people are already wearing masks. So, unless the brown shirts come-a-knocking at our doors, it is safe to say that this BS lockdown will be ineffective. Another thing I find quite interesting is how the criteria keeps changing.

First it is based Adjusted case rate and positivity rate and now it’s based on ICU Bed capacity? Really. Are these ICU beds that are being used by Covid Patients or Just any being used? And how do we know if they are bringing patients in from other counties?

Bernie you must have never gone out of your house for a couple of months . If you had you could have seen with your own eyes that everyone is wearing a mask and keeping distance from each other . We use hand sanitizer before and after going into an establishment . The people followed the guidelines and we are still being shut down . This virus is not a death sentence . It’s true people are going to die from it . How many deaths does it take to destroy a free nation of 339 Million people . Government officials should never be blindly followed .

It’s not just about you!!! You live in a society where you have responsibilities to others. I know what a concept!! Talk to your parents and grandparents about the sacrifices they had to make for the greater good. Wearing a mask does not even come close to what they had to go through. Stop using FREEDOM as a cover for everything its a bad look for anyone! Wear your mask!!!

@Concord You must be a product of those dumb people allowed to procreate. News flash, this is America and this community has already sacrificed with the last lockdown that was not so effective. And by the way, since you seem to be on such a high horse, what are your thoughts on strip cubs being allowed to continue to operate while gyms and barbershops are shut down Hmmmm?? And, what about the sacrifices that our children have had to make with “online learning?”. Sorry but every life cannot be saved and there comes a time when you have to look at the big picture and say, we cannot destroy hundreds of thousands of lives, maybe more, to try save some.

Concord December 5, 2020 - 10:44 AM - 10:44 AM

So sad that this is political.
@Anonymous- First , your premise is invalid. but good try. Love how you bring up the constitution when 2700 people a day are dying. How did you react to 9/11? Because this is like having 9/11 everyday. Without a collective understanding of what it mean to live in a society we will cease to be one and the “rights” given by the Constitution would not even be worth the parchment they were written on.

@Savagette- I am glad I hit a nerve of yours! Since your are trying to put me in a certain corner of this debate please let me elaborate.

We have all been given a false choice by the current administration. NO ONE wants to shut down any business. To make a business any size chose between their health and keeping the business alive is not a choice they should have to make EVER. But the role of government especially state government is to protect the people as a whole not to pick and chose from a health perspective who should live and die as your statement eludes too. I guess you okay playing God. But most people are not

I believe that the federal government in this situation is to blame. If they would have acted in good faith and supplied the needed funding especially to restaurants to help them survive through these times of shutdown we would not be having this discussion. They put a trillion dollars on the credit cards every year to give the rich a not needed tax cut. But won’t help save the fabric of American?? Your anger is misplaced I would say.

We have lost so much of the flavor of the Bay area already and we are no where close to the end of it. Make no mistake we were put in this place by the Trump administration and just so you know I am an independent that votes both Rep and Dems for the record.

You make it seem as though you should not have to sacrifice during this time. Life should go on because your kids should be in school and if that kills the teacher so be it. How Christian of you!!

Lilo Alexander December 4, 2020 - 2:40 PM - 2:40 PM

As an RN for 40 years, I have mostly worked in the Emergency Room. What the people don’t know is that most all ER’s and ICU’s are always full. That is how the business of a hospital works. Full, all the time. Ask anyone who has gone to the ER and ask how long it takes to be seen. The answer is hours and should someone need to be seen right away, there is hopefully a bed in the trauma room, or someone is shoved out into the hall and a hallway gurney pulled into the room. Beds do have a tendency to lighten up with rooms after midnight and before 5am, but not always. Should there be beds available during that time, you can be assured the staffing is cut way back, so again, you wait. Once a patient is admitted to the hospital, again, the wait is on. This process can take from 2 to 18 hours on average. If beds aren’t available, patients have to be shuffled to other areas of the hospital, patients will get discharged, wait for someone to die, and or nurses need to be begged to come in. Sometimes nurses can’t get someone to come in so they hold over nurses to the next shift or ask nurses to come in early. I can’t tell you how many times I couldn’t sent a patient to ICU, simply because they weren’t stable enough go. That is one excuse I never understood. This isn’t a scene in just one hospital I worked in, but my career spanned over 9 different ER’s. Pretty normal and again, this is before COVID. So when I hear the ER and ICU’s are full, my response is “of course, when hasn’t it been that way”. Also, ask any paramedic that transfers a patient to the hospital. Do you think they arrive at the hospital and are immediately directed to a room with a bed. Only in our dreams. Medics are lined up against the walls. in lines with patients, waiting, sometimes for hours too. On TV, they all get rushed into a room, but hey guys, that’s TV. In real life, you wait, wait some more, and wait even more. Ask anyone who goes to the ER and they will tell you. So people, a full ER or ICU actually has nothing to do with COVID.

Sancho Panza December 4, 2020 - 3:28 PM - 3:28 PM

The virus does not care what activity people are engaged in. The virus is transmitted from person to person when they are in close enough contact for long enough and without enough protection. Activities such as playgrounds, church services, meals, and socializing tend to bring people close enough together for long enough periods of time that the virus can be transmitted. That’s why these activities are getting restricted by health orders.

Health authorities know that children in the playing in a park do not develop serious forms of COVID-19. However, those children are also in close contact with other family members who will be in close or casual contact with others in the community.

The number of COVID-19 patients in CC county ICUs jumped from 27 to 36 today. The number of available ICU beds dropped from 55 yesterday to 35 today. (11 non-COVID-19 patients were also routed to the ICU). Hospitalization surge capacity broke into the yellow zone today. That’s the first time that’s happened since the peak of the July surge.

I can see why health authorities are trying to hit the brakes now.

I don’t want to be mad or make a statement against the County but Its safer for the businesses to stay open then to close them. for example if your going to get your hair cut or nails done in a legit salon the owners have taken precautions to keep you safe. If its not done in a business the stylist and other people will be become mobile and do it at somebody’s residence without any precautions. The fact the County is fining business for staying open and allowing looting and rioting to go on without consequences is extremely upsetting! Is the virus real yes! Your efforts to demonize large swatches of your neighbors is sad. Absent emotion, your demonization is also factually wrong; walking the fine line of ‘anit-science’. Studies indicate a huge surge in mask wearing nearing 80%-90% compliance (link to Pew’s study below).

Ask oneself:
Does the reaction match the risk?
Does monster-making of ones’ fellow citizens contribute to one’s point, or does it hinder?
When was the last time fear was used to push legislation and how did Americans suffer because of it?
Is it foolish to spend limited resources on locking down an entire state/counrty versus spending that same amount on a smaller (more at risk) population?

Our politicians are garbage; more worried about their self-image than being leaders. Our politicians do not know how to handle risk.

Jeff December 4, 2020 - 3:59 PM - 3:59 PM

My recollection is that this “spike” was predicted back in April, for the simple fact that there is a flu season, and this is it. We are told to wear a mask while staying 6 feet from people, and as I go out and about, i see compliance (about 95%) with this mandate. Stores require masks to enter; restaurants require masks, and all places require social distancing, and people are somehow able to follow those requirements too, except for a few (one has Governor in front of his name, another has Mayor in front of hers, and then there is the County Health director from LA). This is a virus. Like other viruses, there can be transmission, regardless of what we do. Destroying business, a once-free peoples livelihood, is not the way to go for this. To quote Ben Franklin “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety” Our leaders our taking our essential liberty, and many are purchasing little temporary safety (on behalf of others, no less). We do not need a poli-sci educated, somehow elected leader of this state, from his perch in government housing (little snark there) determining what is essential in our lives. If a (once free) feels they need to be locked up to not catch the virus, stay home (on your own accord). Let the business owner decide if he/she needs to shut in, or if it is more important for them to earn a living and provide for their family.

This is just dumb. These blanket shut fiend don’t work any more and they just piss everyone off and people (as is clear from comments here) are going to largely ignore it. They would do better with a large marketing campaign of telling people to stop the in-home massless gatherings, because that’s the biggest source of transmission by far. This order won’t really stop those abs in fact is likely to create more of them. So what is the point? Claycord.com I believe you to be wrong as a matter of law.

In Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, New York v. Andrew M Cuomo, Governor of New York the United States Supreme Court ruled that churches cannot be treated more harshly than secular “businesses”.

In other words, any limits places on church attendance has to be equal to the limits placed on other businesses. If groceries stores are allowed to be open or remain open with limited occupancies, then churches have to be allowed to remain open or at the maximum have the same limited occupancies as secular businesses that remain open.

SCOTUS rules apply across judicial districts.

Stay home if you’re too afraid of this virus that has a fatality rate of 0.0020%. You’re probably the same person who also hordes toilet paper…

Natalie December 4, 2020 - 7:17 PM - 7:17 PM

There’s a lot of people wearing gaitor style masks which are not all effective. There are a lot of people wearing masks with vents, which are not effective. There are way too many people who don’t cover their nose with their mask. There are people who take their masks off when in stores.

Many of us in CCC have been wearing our masks appropriately, but there are many who have not.

Another issue is the physical distancing when in stores. There are too many people who don’t respect the distancing rules when shopping. Particularly in the holiday season when people are tend to be more frantic consumers.

I share your frustration as someone who has been following the health guidelines to the best of my ability. However, it is true that other peoples’ behaviors have set us back, and resulted in these stricter guidelines.

Led December 4, 2020 - 7:31 PM - 7:31 PM

“Natalie” we all know your real name is Karen. You may be frustrated by people’s mask skills, but you have zero (0) evidence that we’d all be fine if those jerks had worn their masks better. In October our numbers were super low. Do you think that’s because everyone wore their masks more then?? Obviously that’s not what explains this surge. It’s seasonal, most likely, like all respiratory viruses.

ChuckStir December 4, 2020 - 5:41 PM - 5:41 PM

What I do not understand is the closing of barbers and nail salons. Neither have shown to be spreaders of this virus. Liquor stores can remain open and they are non essential (you can buy liquor at a any supermarket which are essential). Why make some businesses suffer when there really is no need to. Like some of of you that commented on feeling sorry for businesses that are forced to close I to feel sorry and think its almost criminal to cherry pick what they close.

Sure lock everything up. Wrap us in plastic and seal our orifices with hot candle wax. That will stop the virus. Maybe. What lockdown advocates fail to consider is the cost of these interventions. When is it ever mentioned? Since there is some benefit to be derived from a lockdown, albeit small at this point, it’s easy to justify – as long as you don’t tally the risks associated with the benefit. Just ignore the impact on mental health, the economy, quality of life, and credibility in our governors. As behooves Citizens of a Free Nation, decide for yourselves on issues of personal risk. Be considerate of others’ safety, but a free and reasonable citizen should not bow to unjust and poorly designed mandates from ignorant petty tyrants.

Well December 4, 2020 - 11:47 PM - 11:47 PM

@WC Feels and everyone else

Exactly. Here is an article written by Drs and signed by over 43,000 medical professionals as of Oct 9 stating the deaths related directly to these shutdowns now far out ways the deaths from COVID. These Drs are advocating a public policy change by government officials to a more targeted approach which includes eliminating lock downs. It seems now we are trading more deaths for less deaths while also destroying the livelihoods and childhoods of many more on top of that. The lock down trade off is no longer more beneficial or the lesser of two evils.

There just gonna create lines outside grocery stores waiting to get in the store and that’s even worse than letting them all in and they just briefly pass each other walking by… In a line they are gonna be breathing neck to neck down each others backs standing around each other for awhile instead of briefly passing by each other in store don’t even make logical sense. Very lame.

Ridiculous to close playgrounds and campgrounds. So dumb. But my family kinda likes it. We still use the playgrounds and all the mask Karens stay away instead of guilt tripping other people’s kids for being outdoors without a mask. I’m okay with masks for indoors, and for particularly crowded outdoor stuff. Not for kids on a playground, that’s just psychological harassment of kids. No thank you.

As for campgrounds, it is far far better for people to have some recreation in the great outdoors than to stay home and (inevitably) hand out with some family or friends indoors. It’s gonna happen, give people safer outlets! Counterproductive to drive people indoors.

Our leaders need to stop picking winners and losers; every job and activity is essential in a free society. Some of the arbitrary prohibitions that our leaders have declared are utterly ridiculous.

Instead, they should be providing public safety guidance/rules and announcements/education that *equally* apply to all on how we can contribute to solving this pandemic. Let individuals figure out if and how they can run their businesses while still following the rules instead of shutting them down arbitrarily.

Let individuals figure it out. When people are told their livelihood is going away, they will resist.

A pandemic really?
Some of the commenting trends over the last year on these updates are funny…not funny ha ha. I’ve noticed almost like clockwork these pro-masker types show up with their “we all just need to wear the masks” “you never worked in a hospital, the ICUs are capacity” etc. etc.
Almost like they were paid to show up on this blog. Interesting, since there are not many to blogs in the bay area that even allow comments.

Funny how the regular influenza viruses are never mentioned or God forbid tracked relative to covid, convenient?

Crippling the economy with this fake “pandemic” served a couple purposes. 1. It allowed wide scale mail-in balloting (a smorgasbord of cheating opportunities). 2. If they can get slow Joe across the finish line, it will provide the means to tamp down civil unrest. 3. Additionally, it allows massive redirection of fed/state/local funds (think crital race theory). 4. Finally it provides the perfect cover for a soon to be crappy economy. There is no way in hell slow Joe’s economy can compete with the previous administration.

Please think big picture and avoid the minutia of silly covid related fake stats and anecdotes.

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The planet is on its way to overpopulation. This virus is beneficial to to humanity. Luckily it kills those on the way due to age or poor lifestyle. Those fighting it are anti humanity. Shame on you, especially if you’re religious.

Think of the next generation and the future of this planet, and stop being so selfish.

Elon Musk say’s this is the “last straw”

“Tesla is filing a lawsuit against Alameda County immediately. The unelected & ignorant “Interim Health Officer” of Alameda is acting contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense!”

“Frankly, this is the final straw. Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately. If we even retain Fremont manufacturing activity at all, it will be dependent on how Tesla is treated in the future”.

One last thing…

There are many good and caring citizens left in California, unfortunately they are either misinformed, under informed, or both, creating a playground in which fear can rule (think 911). Recall history and events that create opportunities for policy, social, funding, changes that otherwise would never get past the voter (think patriot act).

Keep one important thing in mind as you comfort your family and friends during this dark period…

If this pandemic was real, there would be no need for all these special orders, lock downs, SIP, etc.

Concord December 5, 2020 - 3:39 PM - 3:39 PM

So how is South Korea theses days? They have about the same population as the USA. With over half the cases we do and their death rate is much lower. Have not had a SIP in many many month. Economy is hurt but working and getting stronger not weaker. Intelligent people might ask how are they doing this? Testing testing testing! If the Fed government would have invested in testing early on instead of hoping for warm weather to hopefully kill the virus we to could be like South Korean. If a few billion you could give Multiplerapid tests to each American. Although not 100% accurate they help to find cases so people can isolate without a need to shut down the economy. Make no mistake we are in this mess because of one narcissistic person who thought this was released just to hurt him. He did not and still does not take this seriously. He left it up to the state which don’t have the resources to deal with this by themselves. The states response has not been a good one but what else do you want them to do? They don’t have the tools to deal with this. Sweden tried herd immunity and has the same death percentage as we do. So that does not work. Hate how political this is one person to thank for that! This is about the safety of fellow America.something out country use to give a damn about. Welcome to the misinformation age. Everyone thinks they know more than the next person. The years American superiority are almost gone. This is exactly what all our enemies are hoping for. Americans to be at war with American. We better all start to learn Chinese because we are play our enemies card more perfect than they could ever hope for!! Great job America!! We suck!!

South Korea is publicly executing citizens who don’t obey Covid restrictions. That okay with you too?

SGV December 6, 2020 - 9:57 AM - 9:57 AM

Science: If Lockdowns worked Covid would be gone. If masks worked then keeping a significant other from the hospital bed of a sick loved one would not be necessary. I can stand in line at Costco, I should not have been discouraged from voting in person. No evidence kids staying home from in person learning at school stops Covid. No evidence eating inside a restaurant spreads Covid anymore than grocery shopping. INSANITY is what we’re living through. Protect the elderly. Ask them to stay home, don’t mandate that they do. If children live with grandparents then allow them to distance learn but get all other kids back in school.

SGV December 6, 2020 - 10:07 AM - 10:07 AM

Sorry, wasn’t finished…….Bottom line. Allow restaurants to fully open and give them some credit to do the best they can to protect customers. Same with all other business. Get America back to work. Our hospital systems have had many months to get up to speed and therapeutics have been shown to work. After-all, we were never told Lockdowns would get rid of the virus and the initial one was only necessary because we and the world were caught off guard, not prepared, and had no clue what they were dealing with. A different story today. Most of us have accepted the mask wearing and that debate continues. But it does no harm to wear one and for each person to show some caution. All the rest is BS. Those who want to stay inside should not be ridiculed and neither should those who resent the tyranny of a state government drunk on power.

Marco December 6, 2020 - 5:38 PM - 5:38 PM

Shunka Wakan December 6, 2020 - 8:04 PM - 8:04 PM

I don’t understand who decides what has to close. I can’t figure out the reason. For example, why can’t drive-in events continue? Everyone stays in their cars, right? But gyms can operate outdoors? And hair salons could take appointments only, physically distance if there is more than one stylist working. In between customers, the stylists can sanitize. It seems cleaner than public transportation such as BART, which won’t close.
