Gov. Newsom Calls Latest Surge Of COVID-19 Cases “Unprecedented”

California’s latest surge of COVID-19 infections is “unprecedented,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday, as new cases and hospitalizations have skyrocketed in recent weeks.

Newsom, speaking from his home in quarantine after three of his children were recently exposed to a California Highway Patrol officer who tested positive for the virus, said the state has averaged nearly 12,000 new cases per day over the last seven days, a level the state hasn’t reached since the pandemic began.

Of those new cases, 60 percent of them are among those 18-to-49 years old, according to Newsom.

Hospitalizations have also spiked by 77 percent over the last 14 days while intensive care unit admissions have risen by 55 percent over that span.

“Obviously this extends all across the United States and many parts of the world,” Newsom said of the recent surge. “We’re not immune here in the state of California.”

California has clamped down on social activities like indoor restaurant dining in response to the new surge, moving more than two dozen counties into the state’s most-restrictive reopening tier and implemented a month-long curfew to discourage residents from spreading the virus.

The surge also comes as the state builds its capacity to dole out millions of doses of a coronavirus vaccine, Newsom said.

That work includes collaborating both with local governments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has given some $28 million to the state to distribute vaccines when they are available to mass amounts of people.

Newsom likened the state’s vaccination planning to its annual efforts to vaccinate roughly 19 million residents against the annual flu.

“We’re not starting from scratch,” Newsom said.

Newsom said he, his wife and his children are asymptomatic and tested negative over the weekend before going into quarantine on Sunday.

Newsom and state Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly reiterated that residents should avoid large Thanksgiving gatherings later this week, particularly in light of most of the state’s new cases being reported in people under 50 years old.

“We need to just be very careful,” Ghaly said. “We know that our hospitals are seeing levels of surge that they’ve never seen before, even at the height of our June and July peak of cases.”

With the way this is going, maybe all of us will get it in some shape or form, no matter what we do to protect ourselves. Wish it was done and over, so we can move forward with live.

Captain Bebops November 24, 2020 - 9:10 AM - 9:10 AM

There are a number of medical experts who say many of us probably already had it but it just didn’t do anything. I can’t believe they are still using PCR tests.

Simonpure November 24, 2020 - 12:16 PM - 12:16 PM

Roz…I think my wife got it way back in the early stages before we even knew about it.. She had a dry nasty cough that lasted for weeks. She had a few of other symptoms as well. There is no way she had it without me getting it. Then I was around two people in Reno on my Birthday weekend. (9/13) When we found out I went and got tested on 29th and was negative. Some don’t get many symptoms. The person I was around only had a slight fever one day and the rest of the time he said it was just like getting a cold. No big deal at all but be safe anyways girl.

Roz November 24, 2020 - 1:48 PM - 1:48 PM

@ Simonpure ~
If Missy got it, thank goodness it wasn’t really bad. Think some people I know might have had way back in the early stages and thought it was the Flu. My neighbors caught Covid, 2 weeks ago,….for Him, it was like a Flu, and for Her it was like a cold. Stay Health!

Captain Bebops November 24, 2020 - 4:53 PM - 4:53 PM

@Roz, how was your case and friend actually identified as covid? I ask because if PCR the way those tests work it could have just been the flu or a cold. 😕

Roz November 24, 2020 - 9:20 PM - 9:20 PM

@ Captain Bebops~
I have not been tested for Covid and have not fallen ill, to anything serious since 2003,…a real nasty head cold.
One friend was tested early this year for Covid, negative, and she was hit hard with a Flu. Two other friends (married), not tested, in Dec 2019, had a bad Flu,…but? My neighbor felt sick (drain, fever, etc.) and tested positive and his wife did too. They had traveled out of CA, 4 weeks ago.
So was each really a Flu or Covid?,….think it’s hard to know if the test are on the money.
Hope I answered your question.

Captain Bebops November 25, 2020 - 9:14 AM - 9:14 AM

Thanks Roz for answering. I find it interesting to know whether folks were actually tested and what test was used.

Anon- funny you should ask that. I looked up contra costa glue deaths the other day. I could only find 2005-2007 published. We lost about 250 each year, which is roughly the same as Covid this year. Is you do a little math, you will see they less that 3% of our population in this county have tested positive for Covid. All deaths are bad, but the US loses over 7,600 people PER DAY from all causes. Interesting numbers.

so as we expected its all about the vaccine

and you followers do know that the virus even with a vaccine will never go away

and those free flu shots are paid by our taxes

and that money goes to big corps backed by libs

so how is your trust in liberals

do you give them your life to trial a drug on you and your family ??

well you dont have a choice

just like flying you need a real id

now you wont fly without a vaccine or get your license or enter a store or transit without proof of vaccine ….and mask

welcome to china

you’ll make great pets

LL Cool J November 24, 2020 - 9:39 AM - 9:39 AM

Yes, @ Random. I’d like to add:

Pharma, doctors, etc will have no liability for any injuries / deaths from the vaccine. And there will be, don’t kid yourself.

The vaccine will change your RNA/ DNA. If you don’t think that’s a problem, you need to get educated pretty quickly.

All of this for a virus that will 99% NOT kill you.

Wake. The. ____ Up!!

It is such a shame that One Term Impeached President Trump has given up on the pandemic, and instead is focusing on his golf game. We would not have been in this current situation if we had a president who cared about something other than his re-election, which fortunately failed.

WC Resident November 24, 2020 - 9:07 AM - 9:07 AM

“Unprecedented” is not true for CC county as we seem to have been social distancing, masking, and self isolating better than most of the state. The 7-day average of new cases per day in CC county hit 221.6 on July 20, 2020. We are currently* at 164.6 and it may be leveling off as it was at 164.7 the day before. We had more than 164.6 new cases per day for over a month from 7/8/2020 to 8/15/2020.

You can view the county’s graphs at https://www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/overview

The state-wide graphs are at https://covid19.ca.gov/state-dashboard/ CC county’s contribution to the current surge is very small. Unfortunately, they don’t make it easy to see which counties are the main contributors.

While CC county hospitalizations for COVID-19 are up from the low we had in mid-October they are well below the numbers we had from mid-July to September 1, 2020. The hospitalization graphs are at https://www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/hospital though the county does not make it easy to see the number in the hospital graph for more than 30 days at a time. I updated https://imgur.com/a/SUGjK3d to make this graph easier to view.

* To allow the testing labs to process samples the county reports the numbers as of a week ago. The most recent data available for new cases is 11/15/2020.

DLo November 24, 2020 - 11:43 AM - 11:43 AM

@WC Resident,

The East Bay Times provides statistics daily with a two day lag by county in their print version. I’m not sure if it is online, but it is more than likely be behind a paywall if it is online.

The surge is being driven primarily by southern California. Today they reported 5,777 cases for Sunday. 4,523 of those cases were for LA, Orange, San Diego, and San Bernardino Counties. LA County is the primary driver.

I had a Zoom call with a work colleague last week who lives in LA County and she said the issue is in pockets and attributed to gatherings, restaurants, and very little mask wearing.

The Los Angeles Times reported, the California Highway Patrol provides security for the Newsom family. And of course on my dollar.

Pacman November 24, 2020 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

The Governor and several other elected officials have always had security details originally provided by the CA State Police. The State Police was absorbed by the CHP many years ago.

The protective detail used to be a highly desired assignment. Word on the street is that with Moonbeam and Newsom, no one wanted the job any longer as the general public treats the CHP officers better than our current political elite. It is now considered purgatory for CHP officers that pissed off the wrong boss and has become an assigned position.

WC Resident November 24, 2020 - 1:44 PM - 1:44 PM

The CHP provides security for the governor and his family. See https://www.chp.ca.gov/find-an-office/headquarters/assistant-commissioner-field/protective-services-division/dignitary-protection-section Apparently one of the officers involved in the security detail tested positive. That officer had been in contact with three of the children.

So far, nobody in the Newsom family has tested positive. They were already dealing with a quarantine as the classmate of one of their children tested positive and so one of the Newsom kids (they range from age 4 to 11) was in quarantine and now all four kids are in quarantine. It suspect the parents volunteered to join them.

I still wonder how schools plan to handle in-classroom education if groups of kids are all going to be sent home for quarantine any time a single person is confirmed, and perhaps suspected, with COVID-19 potentially had contact with a student. Let’s say a parent of a child tests positive. Do you put everyone in that child’s class plus their teacher(s) in quarantine?

Would majority of increase be in southern most counties of the state ? ? ?
Turns out there are 100,000 border crossings per day, citizens with dual citizenship, retirees and essential workers who live in Mexico.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/california/

JWB November 24, 2020 - 4:04 PM - 4:04 PM

How convenient to have Mexican’s to blame. But have you considered that these might be more agricultural counties? It seems to be pretty hard to pick lettuce from your home office. Also if you work at agricultural wages it may just be that living conditions make it quite difficult to socially distance?

I’m quite familiar with the current situation in Monterey county. There is quite a difference in cases between the Salinas valley and the Monterey Peninsula and it is quite obvious that this difference is not due to border crossings.

Marco November 24, 2020 - 4:31 PM - 4:31 PM

Original G November 24, 2020 - 5:53 PM - 5:53 PM

Do believe I mentioned “… citizens with dual citizenship, retirees and essential workers who live in Mexico.” Though did neglect to mention those who hold Green Cards and live in Mexico.

Funny thing about hospitals in CA, do believe they can’t by CA law ask if their patient is in this country legally nor can they deny care.

That said, consider those who are legally entitled to cross into CA, if you were residing in Mexico, where CV-19 rules are different, would you seek medical care in Mexico or the USA ? ? ?

“An estimated 275,000 US citizens and green card holders live in Baja California.”

Greatest motivator of automation has been cost of labor.
Liberals here in CA back in 1970s decided farm workers needed their “help”, what followed were endless hearings up in SAC, legislation, regulations, red tape and state mandated reports. All of which drove up the cost of human labor, enter automation, much of it invented at UC Davis.

An about lettuce if you’re in Salinas Valley you might get to see this machine in the fields,

JWB November 24, 2020 - 6:35 PM - 6:35 PM

@OG

You’re too funny. You actually should look at the links you post. If you look at the youtube link about the “machine in the field” you can see at about one minute how how humans are actually working on it without much distancing.

Original G November 24, 2020 - 7:15 PM - 7:15 PM

As video describes there are fewer farm workers than in past.
No longer doing traditional stoop labor, as to social distancing, that would not be evident because as can clearly be seen on YouTube page, video was posted Jan 6, 2017.

JWB November 24, 2020 - 8:16 PM - 8:16 PM

@OG

Try to concentrate for a second my friend. Why would it be relevant whether there are fewer farm workers than in the past?

Let me repeat what I wrote. ” It seems to be pretty hard to pick lettuce from your home office” and as you can see on your video there a plenty of farm workers standing on top of that machine processing lettuce.
