The body of a transient was found Sunday night just south of Highway 4 between the Center Street and Alhambra Avenue exits in Martinez, and police do not suspect foul play.

Martinez police Sgt. Gerardo Espinoza said a call came in at about 8 p.m. Sunday from someone who believed his friend, a transient, had died near the John Muir Inn and the entrance of a railroad tunnel nearby.

Police, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crew, an ambulance crew and Contra Costa Sheriff’s deputies all responded, and the man was pronounced dead.

Espinoza said the body showed no visible signs of trauma. The name of the man was not released, pending notification of family.

You don’t have to know the person to feel sad that someone has died.

Each dead transient probably has a family that wished it was all different. A family that grieves the loss of a normal healthy life to a life of addiction and/or mental illness.
Each body found has many people wondering, “Was it my child? My brother? My mom? Will I finally get that call I’ve been dreading?”
