The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Today’s question:

Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday issued a curfew for California residents, saying for the next 30 days nobody can leave their home, unless it’s for essential business, between the hours of 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.

QUESTION: Do you think a curfew is necessary, or do you think the Governor is overstepping his power?

Talk about it….

Well, since the Laundry closes at 8:45PM, I guess a curfew is ok.

Kentucky Derby November 20, 2020 - 12:35 PM - 12:35 PM

This is asinine. It serves no purpose, especially sense most people probably aren’t leaving their homes between 10 pm – 5 am anyway. There’s no place to go. And, yes – Newsom is overstepping his power.

Joe Blo November 20, 2020 - 1:36 PM - 1:36 PM

It’s to keep people from spending all night getting drunk and/or partying and making unsafe decisions – which has been happening for months and is what led to the severe uptick across the country. People – CLEARLY – have no control over themselves. College kids, adults who just don’t care, etc.. This is another barrier towards helping with that – whether you understand that to not.

This isn’t hard to figure out unless you’re choosing to be blind to the facts here.

Kentucky Derby November 20, 2020 - 1:47 PM - 1:47 PM

If you really think an unenforceable curfew will keep people from getting drunk and partying, you’re clueless. Is Newsom going to go door to door?

And the fact that he’s a hypocrite will keep people from taking him seriously.

The severe uptick has a lot to do with the colder weather. I was told at the beginning (doctors and nurses) that colder weather will bring on a lot more cases because it’s spreads easier in colder weather, and more people indoors.

JRocks November 20, 2020 - 2:09 PM - 2:09 PM

@Jo Blo

Just stay home if you are afraid. Protect yourself. Who gave you the authority to control people that “can’t control themselves”? Where does this “authority” stop?

Tyler S November 20, 2020 - 5:13 PM - 5:13 PM

Yeah Joe… Certainly is only that. Not the riots and protests for the last 6 months or the hundreds of thousands of idiots who crammed the streets sharing champ bottles to celebrate the election. Small business is done by that time anyways. Go back to your rocket newsom spaceworld.

Joe Blo November 20, 2020 - 6:14 PM - 6:14 PM

@JRocks – well since people are CLEARLY unable to control themselves and abide by the international health guidelines for a planetary virus infecting people for years to come, I’d say anyone in power has the authority to do whatever it takes to fix the problem.

I’m sorry if you feel accosted by being told to wear a thin piece of paper for ten minutes while you’re out shopping or that you are limited in public meet-ups outside your immediate family, but that’s the times we’re living in .. because, presumably, people like you and many others on this forum feel they have rights to affect (and infect) other people without a care in the world.

At what point will you stop being the problem and instead “conform” to ANY potential solution? When does the value of another persons (including your own) life come before your own ego and need to “not be controlled”?

The government already assigns you a number, charges you taxes and makes you get a license for everything .. but you draw the line at wearing a mask and not getting plastered in a pandemic? Those values are mighty messed up, in my opinion. *shrug*

Raiderette November 20, 2020 - 6:47 PM - 6:47 PM

@ Joe Blo

LOL!! Seriously?! People haven’t had control over themselves since people started existing. Please stay home if you are that afraid. People will do what people will want to do. If those people do not want to comply then those people will get sick. Oh well. That’s there choice, right? Isn’t that what happens? People always ruin it for other people. Hence the reason for laws (which don’t seem to apply to CA). And please don’t blame it on college kids and adults cause I’ve seen a lot of seniors wearing a mask below there nose. Bottom line people are stupid. You can’t fix stupid, right?

Aunt Barbara November 20, 2020 - 10:16 PM - 10:16 PM

go blo joe!

Joe Blo November 20, 2020 - 10:55 PM - 10:55 PM

@Raiderette – That’s a pretty fun take. Let’s take it for a spin.

Person A has the virus but hey, who cares? They’re out partyin’ ignoring the curfew (because he’s no Commie, right!) and infects other people who also “don’t care”. Those people now go home to people who DID abide the curfew and get them sick. Those people go to school, work or to the supermarket and – yup – has a chance to infect OTHER people who weren’t “behaving like Socialists”. Some of them go home to families, others go home alone. Small chance to pass anything on but anything over zero chance is still a chance, right?

But, we’re playing the social card here. People do whatever they want was what you said, I believe. People haven’t had control over themselves since people started existing you also quipped. Interesting. So you’re saying people are incapable of being awaret of what’s going on around them or how their actions affect others as well as themselves? This seems like a pretty good reason for someone to step up and guide people to be … better.

“You can’t fix stupid.” Unfortunately, that’s correct – and there’s lots of people that prove that every second of the day, especially around this area of the state. But that only goes to show why there’s guidance – so the people that aren’t capable of taking care of others by taking care of themselves are assisted.

It’s not a “fear” thing – it’s a common-sense/logical thing. I go out all the time whether it be to the store for food or wherever else. My mask is always on and I wash my hands constantly – as does everyone in my household. Basic things to keep my household and the people they come in contact with wherever they are safe. That’s the difference. People who care about themselves and others and those that only care about what THEY want at any given time and refute anybody who dampens that ideal. As has been shown a few times here in recent months, people’s tunes tend to change when the hypothetical issue of getting sick turns into a reality scare. As you said … “can’t fix stupid”.

John November 20, 2020 - 12:48 PM - 12:48 PM

Like most things Newsom does, this is all show but now substance. Just another thing he can say he is doing, without actually doing anything. If numbers go up…. people aren’t following the curfew, time to get more strict…..if numbers go down…. look my curfew worked, I’m the best, time to really enforce it and make them go lower……. this guy will do anything that makes him sound good to his liberal base, without actually doing anything. It’s all about image to him, never about substance.

Ironic you abbreviate these requests for opinions as “WC”. Basically means toilet in some countries.

Somebody needs to put a leash on this clown. California is already circling the drain. The last thing we need right now is more nonsense spewing from Sacramento. This curfew will do nothing. Many of those saddled with the responsibility of enforcing this policy are already refusing. Good for them!

Circling? It’s already down the drain and in the sewer.

Does this apply to the Indian Casinos?–do they have to close?

Roz November 20, 2020 - 1:10 PM - 1:10 PM

Putting a curfew from 10pm to 5am really doesn’t make sense, because most places are closed. Thinking this is just a small step for Newson to step up the game,…bit by bit at a time to take more important things away from us. Before you know it, more Freedoms of this State will be gone.

KAD November 20, 2020 - 1:15 PM - 1:15 PM

I agree with the curfew. Steps need to be taken to get this under control. If the idiots would just use the mask and stay away from other people as much as possible we might get a handle on this situation.

Dood November 20, 2020 - 2:04 PM - 2:04 PM

@KAD, this does nothing. Do you really believe that there are that many people out at these hours spreading and contracting??? This has absolutely no merit, they have not provided any explanation on what activities they are targeting. Not that I agree with it, but a day time curfew would make sense….

Also, where in Claycord are you living that you are seeing people not wearing masks?

The virus is going to spread, it can’t be stopped and for many they can’t accept that reality so they hide behind these “rules”. You really believe exactly 6 feet separation is enough to be safe… but it sure makes you feel good. Take your forehead temperature to screen you, oh wait they already know that is completely ineffective yet its still being done, but doesn’t it make you feel good!

JRocks November 20, 2020 - 2:18 PM - 2:18 PM

@ KAD

You have the right to stay home and protect yourself. If isolate at home you will not get sick.

Rollo Tomasi November 20, 2020 - 2:22 PM - 2:22 PM

Like in Italy, or Spain for example? They’ve had a mask mandate for all spaces outside the home, and they’re spiking just like we are.

Cristina November 20, 2020 - 3:06 PM - 3:06 PM

@KAD I would really say if you want to be the idiot wearing the mask then you can continue you keep wearing it. If people feel safer wearing a mask and social distancing and thinking that 10:00 PM is a magic time that you will contract COVID until after the clock ticks to 10:01 PM then stay home with your mask on. However, for those of us that feel comfortable not wearing a mask and do not want be prisoners in our own home then I would not say we are the idiots.

Led November 20, 2020 - 4:59 PM - 4:59 PM

Just look at the city-by-city breakdown: it’s not hard to figure out. Places with blue-collar workers and poorer households with more people per sq foot are higher. The spread isn’t your hated neighbors, it’s the essential workers who can’t sit on Zoom through all of this. Our current strategy is “shelter the richer” and “achieve herd immunity among the poorer.”

But it is more psychologically satisfying to blame other people for having fun…

Jeff November 20, 2020 - 1:38 PM - 1:38 PM

It is not an “or” question. First, is a curfew necessary? What is that, a timeout? Curfew? The precept is this will limit transmission of the virus. OF course, he set the curfew for a period of time when there are less people about to begin with. Viruses are not known to clock out at 10 PM, and clocking back in at 5 in the morning. So, no, “curfew” is not necessary. Next, is Gavin overstepping his power? Of course he is. He knows no limitations on law, only that he “should” state the laws, his rule. Exemplifies the laws for thee standard.

Joe Blo November 20, 2020 - 1:51 PM - 1:51 PM

To restate again since you didn’t read the comment(s) above …

It’s to keep people from spending all night getting drunk and/or partying and making unsafe decisions – which has been happening for months and is what led to the severe uptick across the country. People – CLEARLY – have no control over themselves. College kids, adults who just don’t care, etc.. This is another barrier towards helping with that – whether you understand that to not.

This isn’t hard to figure out unless you’re purposefully choosing to make a scientific/medical issue a political one. Note – many other countries also have a curfew in place for the same reason and NONE of them could care any less for the state of California or this country as a whole since they have their own problems. But hey, people need to be offended over something ’round here so why not make up a problem or two when you’re bored. *shrug*

Rollo Tomasi November 20, 2020 - 2:24 PM - 2:24 PM

“Note – many other countries also have a curfew in place for the same reason…”

And they’re spiking just like we are.

JRocks November 20, 2020 - 2:30 PM - 2:30 PM

@Joe Blo

So if Gavin Von Newsome wanted to enforce a mandatory work out schedule for fat people you would be good with that? After all heart disease is the #1 killer in our country. Where do you draw the line?

You are so caught up in the virus that you don’t understand, or have forgotten what country you live in. If you read the constitution you may understand what most people here are talking about. If you don’t you will continue to miss the point.

Jeff November 20, 2020 - 4:44 PM - 4:44 PM

@joe bio
It is not the governor of a State’s role to make sure people do not make unsafe decisions, whether it be drinking or staying up late. What evidence would you provide that demonstrates that people drinking after 10 PM is leading to a spike in positive Covid tests after 3 months of decreasing positive covid tests? Not agreeing with a state executive who has taken it upon himself to dictate how people should live their life (even if just telling them, they cannot go out after dark) is political in that a politician has trod upon the individual liberties of the state’s residents. Newsom’s orders are not a medical issue (nothing medical about it), and not tremendously scientific.

Rollo Tomasi November 20, 2020 - 6:05 PM - 6:05 PM

@JRocks:

Even better would be a mandatory workout schedule for everybody, regardless of their susceptibility to heart disease.

Gittyup November 20, 2020 - 6:05 PM - 6:05 PM

Once you get used to this, it will be the norm … just like every other freedom he has restricted. Pretty soon you won’t even be complaining when the “rules” get even more ridiculous. Newsom knows what a moral degenerate he is, so the thinks everybody else behaves the same way he does … therefore, the curfew.

Joe Blo November 20, 2020 - 11:07 PM - 11:07 PM

@Rollo – and that was predicted by many scientists because people are tired of the same monotony for the past nine months. That’s the same with anything. People didn’t take things seriously and it blew up to where we are now. So of course the best action is to just ignore it and continue on doing nothing still? Makes sense.

@Jrocks – I didn’t know that “being fat” was something that could be passed from person to person via multiple methods and needed to be controlled. If a severely rotund person sneezes on me, am I also doomed to become a Costco Baby Yoda Squishy doll? No? They’re not the same thing? Oh … okay then. It would seem you’re [checks the quote] … “so caught up in the virus that you don’t understand” – what you’re actually fighting for. It is what it is.

@Jeff – Did you ask what evidence I have that states that people who stay up late in public tend to be at locations where alcohol is consumed – sometimes to excess? Outside of a 24/7 supermarket or gas station, where else are people going that doesn’t serve alcohol? As another person pointed out before (in a comment towards me, which made no sense), [sometimes] people don’t make the best decisions so if they’re getting a drink or two (or three or four or…), proper pandemic behavior can certainly be forgotten. Basic common sense and decorum is forgotten when being out late without drinking sometimes “just because”, but for some reason you’re not counting those at all? As for your first part, it actually *IS* the governor’s role to ensure the safety of the people – which, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed or not, we’re in a bit of a pickle with this whole virus thing going around killing some people, making others sick all the while being contagious too all ages, genders and walks of life. If you think he’s overstepping his bounds, and you’re CLEARLY not alone here on the Claycord, I’m sure you and others will be filing an official complaint about his abuse of power and have a trial set up so the state can get compensated for all this … “Communism” … or is it all just talk like always? That’s how it is here. It’s how it ALWAYS is here.

Chris November 20, 2020 - 1:51 PM - 1:51 PM

This is addressed to the morons who actually believe in lockdowns and curfews. Ok, lock everyone down like Italy did. The “virus” infections dropped dramatic in ltaly, but what happens when you slowly open back up and follow health protocols? Oh yeah…IT just miraculously disappears NOT! You have to manage it…Lockdowns & Curfews are feel good ideas that Liberal politicians can celebrate in places like the French Laundry while the rest suffer the consequences.

WC November 20, 2020 - 1:59 PM - 1:59 PM

He just did it after New York did it. Hope he feels good. People should just stay home unless out to work or getting essentials. I can get drunk and party from 2-10pm. Where is the science behind 10pm? Newsom should listen to the science.

In countries that are communist socialist and have no rights but to do what we where and how the dictator says
The virus still lives ahhh this is madness
No this is America where
Yes that’s right we can question the gov
And ask for proof
And demand for our families
And oppose idiocy and hypocrisy and a dictatorship

Your compliance only pushes our freedoms out the door
It only emboldens the hypocrisy
It only spreads more fear
Oh wait that’s your intent to jab at freedom of people who wish to be free
To hush people who wish to enjoy their freedom and live life

But ahhhh what about me and my family out on the streets with our masks and such suffering the exposure from the free Americans on the streets

Seriously stay home if your scared
while we work and pay the extra taxes you voted to burden us with

Fred P. November 21, 2020 - 3:55 PM - 3:55 PM

Oh we’re being called “haters” again.

Nope. No “hate” here, snowflake.

Just tired of idiot politicians/hypocrites trying to strip away my rights.

And tired of lying liberals like popcorn fawning over every democrat that ever existed.

I noticed November 21, 2020 - 4:06 PM - 4:06 PM

Bubba had Monica, and Newsom has popcorn.

Fred P. November 21, 2020 - 7:03 PM - 7:03 PM

Good one…

Popcorn is to Newscum as Monica was to Bubba…

And as Harris to Willie Brown

Popcorn is sucking up to the dnc (and DeSaulnier) pretty hard.

Aunt Barbara November 21, 2020 - 10:45 PM - 10:45 PM

The Governor is ordering the Doctors and promoting fear and panic
not the other way around….. Recall Omen Newsom now!

Ilovepopcorn November 20, 2020 - 8:00 PM - 8:00 PM

You are scary.

BernieM November 20, 2020 - 11:02 PM - 11:02 PM

Incoherent. Why don’t you just copy/paste the text from the conspiracy website, or the actual link ?
Adding your own interpretation is just adding more confusion to an already implausible theory.
Thanks in advance 👍

First, I know of ZERO cops who would ever enforce this. BUT if they feel the need to do so, I know 3 people who could start being the curfew police. Use the 3 police captains who all worked the last holiday in order to spike their pay and pensions. This is in the middle of a budget crisis and the pandemic, and while all “non-essential (non-patrol) officers were ordered to stay home.

Seriously, I doubt any PD is going to enforce this.

Ilovepopcorn November 21, 2020 - 8:27 AM - 8:27 AM

Baaaaaaaaaawaaaaaaaaaaa. 🤪🤪🤪PO Baby dat too bad! The truth is the truth! Follow the rules and grow up. Save lives and keep us healthy. If you have a problem with that than you are dangerous. Oh… yea… you might
be all Trumpsters that blame the democrats for COVID!! Ha ha we are not that powerful, with the exception we voted your savior out. Stop drinking the Koolaid. To Auntie BABA!! Could you just stop the hate for once? You are miserable.

Rollo Tomasi November 21, 2020 - 8:42 AM - 8:42 AM

As popcorn so eloquently expresses thoughtful, well-reasoned comments while cowering at home, frozen in fear by a virus with a 99,7% survival rate. Hey popcorn, Ebola called – it wants to drop in and visit Rossmoor!

Rollo Tomasi November 21, 2020 - 8:58 AM - 8:58 AM

While we’re at it popcorn, perhaps you could take some time for self reflection, go back a few months and review all of your fawning commentary regarding all things all things Newsome, then tell us again about who believes politicians are saviors. Perhaps most interesting is the fact you believe politicians have the desire, much less the ability, to keep us safe and healthy. That responsibility is ultimately the domain of each individual, not the state.

BernieM November 21, 2020 - 8:47 AM - 8:47 AM

Ah yes, it’s on the internet so it must be true. Solid reasoning right there 👌

America November 21, 2020 - 8:49 AM - 8:49 AM

COVID is very smart and crafty. Only comes out after 10 pm. Bahahahaha!!!

George November 21, 2020 - 10:27 AM - 10:27 AM

Gavin says there will be a curfew. Too funny! Who will enforce this curfew? Our police departments are already busy and they have more important things to do. Most people are home anyway during the curfew hours. Too bad the curfew wont stop the college kids from having their parties or stop any protest gatherings who intend to loot.

Ilovepopcorn November 21, 2020 - 11:04 AM - 11:04 AM

To Mr. Rollo Tomasi! Sheltering in place at home is not an act of cowardice. It is the opposite, We have a pandemic that people become the vessel to spread from me to you and everybody! You don’t get to not wear your mask just because your personal freedoms are taken away. We have the responsibilities to protect each other regardless of your political beliefs. We must follow the protocols. No they can’t enforce the curfew. They will educate the ignorant. It is a great reminder of danger lurks with uncontrollable behaviors. Please just behave yourself. Don’t worry about THE GOVERNMENT telling you what to do. We the people are The Government. Grow up and do the right thing.

Aj November 21, 2020 - 11:51 AM - 11:51 AM

I won’t be participating, if I get pulled over for breaking curfew, I’ll sue. This is illegal on many levels. I don’t need gavin to “keep” me safe, I can and will make my own choices. Such as Thanksgiving. I will be celebrating out of state, with more than 10 people from more than 3 households. So Gavin, do us all a favor and crawl back into the hole you came out of.

Ilovepopcorn November 21, 2020 - 10:07 PM - 10:07 PM

I hope you don’t get infected or anyone in your household too. You know you are seriously raising your chances of participating in the spread. It is a self centered way to behave by putting others at risk.
You think the governor is the one imposing these restrictions for no good reason? We are in the middle of the worst surge yet. This virus is way out of control. People die from it. They can get serious complications too. Like missing limbs, heart problems etc. So sorry for you.

Ilovepopcorn November 21, 2020 - 11:17 PM - 11:17 PM

You mention “I” a lot! This is not about you. The protocols are to protect others and you, I hope you realize you are putting your friends at risk on Thanksgiving. What are you going to do if you go out after curfew??
That is comical. All dressed up and nowhere to go! Have fun.

Ilovepopcorn November 22, 2020 - 2:57 AM - 2:57 AM

Droplets 💧 spread 25 feet and the aerosol droplets 💧 last 15 minutes!
That is something to remember. Follow the science!

ToldUSo November 22, 2020 - 7:27 AM - 7:27 AM

Not sure why so many people are complaining, this should have been done months ago. Problem is too many people are still partying every weekend. I have 3 neighbors who constantly party almost every weekend and without face masks. We all want our kids to go back to school and get things back to normal but we have too many folks out there thinking this is all a joke. Good luck to everyone.

Fred P. November 23, 2020 - 8:50 PM - 8:50 PM

Newscum blamed his CHP detail for infecting his kids with COVID; turns out his kids got it from them “attending their private school in person.”

The rules are for thee but not for me. Just like the French Laundry. Hysterical like plump jack winery staying open.

And that’s the problem I have with this COVID 19 thing…. politicians evicting rules that they don’t follow but expect the public to follow … California, Nevada and Oregon.

Just like the democrats forcing Obamacare on the public and exempting themselves.

POS liars.
