Anybody have a COCOCO hospitalizations graph from 3/16/20 forward?

Let’s put the numbers in perspective here since Claycordians like to underplay the last 9 months…

https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/

People here didn’t want to sit in their houses for two weeks when this all started (“Communists!”, “You can’t tell me what to do!”, etc.) so, as predicted by numerous doctors and experts in this field, the pandemic is exploding at the end of the year. This isn’t a political issue. People in Europe couldn’t care less about Newsom or some random governor in another state. This is a scientific issue where people with excessively-sized egos don’t want any accountability and responsibility for themselves and others around them. Countries around the world handled this entire situation better than people where have – but I guess all THOSE people are “sheep”.

I fully expect to get verbally accosted now – that’s what this “community” does here. Have at it. Upset egotists mean nothing against scientific facts gained from across the globe.

Have a good weekend, folks.

Wage Slave November 20, 2020 - 1:13 PM - 1:13 PM

Almost all the countries around the world that supposedly handled this better (read: through authoritarianism) are having their spikes right now as well. Isolated one-off places like New Zealand are a red herring. The US was never going to be able to do what they did.

Sweden, never locked down, is having a new spike. So far, not a lot of increase in death.

France, which did lock down, is having a severe spike now, with a corresponding increase in deaths. Germany, which also locked down early, is having a massive spike. They are also having protests and riots at the new lockdowns. Itally is spiking badly, and they had one of the most draconian lockdowns if all back in early spring, as well as the most deaths.

The UK, which also locked down early, after at first seeming to go the Sweden route, is also spiking hard with new cases. Deaths are going back up, but not as extremely as France, at least so far.

All lockdowns can do is slow the spread. In a few isolated remote and sparsely populated places like New Zealand, you might be able to stamp it out, but for connected modern nations, it’s never going to happen. In the end, lockdowns trade freedom and prosperity for time and hopefully spared lives. Side effects include massive social unrest, destroyed livelihoods, and severe depression and despair.

California locked down harder than most states. We had a spike in the spring anyway. Now we are spiking hard again. Idaho locked down somewhat, and released the lockdown more quickly. Their cases never spiked too much in the spring, and are spiking sharply now.

New York had the most cases and deaths of any state in the spring, and the most draconian lockdowns in the nation subsequently. Their cases are spiking hard now too.

In all of that, I don’t see any real connection between lockdowns and better outcomes in long term case rates.

I know of no respiratory illness in human history that was controlled by human social intervention. Masks and social distancing are all well and good, but in the end there is still no solution beyond herd immunity, either through infection or vaccine. Everything else is just a balancing act, trying to protect lives, livelihoods, and the economy. If it makes you feel better to point at the other side of the aisle and blame them, go for it, I guess. But no one was going to solve this problem with policy.

Cat'sMeow November 20, 2020 - 1:47 PM - 1:47 PM

@Wage Slave
Well said/written.

As for the other comment above, I’m feeling verbally accosted and am beginning to notice extensive bruising.

“Upset egotists mean nothing against scientific facts gained from across the globe.”

And now I feel properly diminished. 🥱🥱🥱

Captain Bebops November 20, 2020 - 2:06 PM - 2:06 PM

Well for one thing we’ve jumped from summer to winter seemingly skipping fall. There are more deaths naturally in winter than any other season. Let’s add in the “fear factor” since media has done a good job of scaring the population half to death.

If you know where to look you can interviews with top professors of epidemiology who can shed light on what is really happening compared to the spin the journalists of the mainstream media who don’t have the credentials to understand the science. Try Unherd LockdownTV which can still be found on YouTube. Those are excellent interviews. I like the one with Oxford Professors Heneghan and Jefferson. It is a well annotated interview.

Chuq November 20, 2020 - 3:23 PM - 3:23 PM

“France, which did lock down, is having a severe spike now, with a corresponding increase in deaths.”

France opened things back up in June.

“Germany, which also locked down early, is having a massive spike.”

Germany seems to have opened things up again in May.

And you’re right Italy did have a pretty severe plan in place for COVID – through May. You mention New York spiking hard now but they are the fourth best state in the nation when it comes to COVID.

I do agree with you that we are not going to be able to achieve a New Zealand level of success. I definitely agree with this statement:

“In the end, lockdowns trade freedom and prosperity for time and hopefully spared lives. Side effects include massive social unrest, destroyed livelihoods, and severe depression and despair.”

What is your alternative plan of action? I am sincerely asking.

As to destroyed livelihoods – and this is where I will get political for a moment: why has the latest government relief bill on hold again? Canada has been helping it citizens through this time with financial aid. And just to head it off at the pass: I would not qualify to receive any financial relief.

Darwin November 20, 2020 - 3:40 PM - 3:40 PM

@ jo blo
I’m only going to accost you with facts.
Covid has a 99.79% survival rate. If you are at risk or afraid stay home.
#1 killer in the USA is heart disease
#2 killer is cancer.

The Democrats are trying to crash the economy so it is easier to slide into socialism. Open your eyes 👀

Joe Blo November 20, 2020 - 6:08 PM - 6:08 PM

What is it with people like @Darwin here?

Because something isn’t the “number one killer” we shouldn’t care at all or otherwise do anything proactive to mitigate/prevent the issue? Breast Cancer isn’t the number one killer in the country so I guess, by your reply alone, we shouldn’t bother doing anything for it. Same with anything else. 1% of a huge number is still – wait for it – A HUGE NUMBER.

Let’s put it this way, Darwin (ironic name, isn’t it?) … if I filled a jar with 100 jellybeans and injected poison into only ONE jellybean, would you be 100% comfortable letting your kid, spouse and other loved ones put their hands in to grab only one jellybean? You should be, right? I mean, it’s only … 1% that’s the problem.

You make no sense and your blindness to actual reality in this case shines through incredibly. What a shame.

Wage Slave November 20, 2020 - 7:02 PM - 7:02 PM

Chuq, I know their lockdowns were relatively short. But that didn’t save them from this current hard fall spike, anymore than it saved New York. And presumably, New York will have an overall lower fall spike because they were hit so hard in the spring. If their covid policies were truly keeping the virus in check, why did it explode all at once all across Europe and the US at the same time?

My alternative is liberty. Government may ask, or plead with citizens to adhere to guidelines. But in the end it’s up to the individual to assess the risk and choose accordingly. If that means we run out of medical capacity, then that is another risk people will have to take into account. I suspect that if things get that dire, you won’t have to force people to stay home, they will do it voluntarily

The covid relief bill is, in my opinion, politics. First Dems asked for a wish list that Senate Republicans would never have agreed to, and then House Dems refused to work on a more realistic bill because they knew millions of checks going out with Trump’s name on them would help him get reelected.

Darwin November 20, 2020 - 7:49 PM - 7:49 PM

@ jo blo
Your paranoid response is comical. Like I said if you are afraid or at risk stay home. People like you enjoy being fearful and paranoid and try to instill it in others. You can try to rationalize your feelings all you want. The numbers don’t quantify the paranoia. Go eat some jellybeans, it’s going to be okay 😘

CDCs survival rate by age
0-19 99.997%
20-49 99.98%
50-69 99.5%
70+ 94.6%

WC Resident November 20, 2020 - 9:29 PM - 9:29 PM

Lockdowns combined with testing on a massive scale have eliminated the virus in some countries. Examples include China, Thailand, and Cambodia. Many countries have knocked the virus down to single digit new-cases per day. Examples include Australia with 3 new cases, Singapore with 5 new cases, and Vietnam which had knocked the virus down to zero but currently is dealing with 7 new cases.

Unfortunately, the virus is surging in many countries at present. It’s feeling like whack a mole at times.

This web site has nice graphs but also has summaries of how countries such as Israel are tackling the virus. https://www.endcoronavirus.org/countries

Joe Blo November 20, 2020 - 10:44 PM - 10:44 PM

@Darwin .. it’s okay, buddy. You chose not to respond to anything I said about “1%” or the “jellybean” experiment. Of course you didn’t – you’d not want to admit that even one jellybean out of one hundred isn’t the best odds for loved ones to feel safe – this includes you.

The point is simple. Long-lasting effects of a virus are already proven as is the inability of far too many people to care about others as much as they care about themselves. It’s okay – keep reciting statistics as if it matters and remember how you’ll feel when one of those “one-percenters” turns out to be one of your very own. I’m sure, like a few people here already have, you’ll change your tune pretty quickly when the problem stops being hypothetical and starts being real. Hopefully that never happens, but one jellybean out of a hundred … across millions … those aren’t great odds.

Chuq November 21, 2020 - 1:17 AM - 1:17 AM

Wage Slave, I can understand that you value liberty very highly but what I feel what you are saying is that your plan is no plan. I could understand that if I did not believe the measures we have taken have kept the numbers low. I expect we differ on that.

I think there are a great many liberties we are denied in the name of safety – speed limits for example. I hope that the incoming vaccines make this all entirely moot in the coming months.

Darwin November 21, 2020 - 7:53 AM - 7:53 AM

@ jo blo
Are your feelings hurt???
I will keep reciting statistics, because my facts don’t care about your feelings.
I read what you wrote and you are a typical democrat. You are afraid to go outside, so you don’t want anyone else to go outside (democrat logic). If you are AFRAID or at risk stay home. The shut downs are not doing much of anything.
If your hero Newsome really thought this pAnDemiC was real do you think he would be putting his family at risk by attending parties???

It’s a democratic ploy to crash the economy to slide easier into socialism.

SEE ABOVE STATISTICS

PS keep having your emotions and emotions override common sense. The statistics just are not there. Typical democrat

Wage Slave November 21, 2020 - 9:19 AM - 9:19 AM

“I hope that the incoming vaccines make this all entirely moot in the coming months.”

Amen to that, my friend.

I am jealous of my liberty, because once it is gone, it is difficult to get back. Maybe my outlook is wrong, I leave it to democracy to decide these things, but then when governors are ruling be emergency decree, that isn’t really democracy.

The Patriot act was a temporary infringement on privacy rights for security. Now it is all but permanent, and seems to be abused for political purposes. Why do you think our health officer is declaring “racism a public health crisis?” Because they’ve seen what kind of power can be wielded if you get to bypass all the rules and roadblocks.

The next time anything like this happens, the blueprint is set now. Lock everyone up, blow out the spending, and hope innovation can save us. What if the vaccines hadn’t worked? What if it mutated? We’d be back at square one, except our economy would be wrecked and our debt no good.

I think it was Madison who said something to the effect that the Constitution was only meant to govern a virtuous people. If government has to force people to comply with edicts, either the edicts are unreasonable, or the people are no longer worthy of being governed by that great document. I think people are mostly good, and will do the right thing if you are reasonable with them. And the few that wont, well, we’ll be OK if some people refuse to wear masks. We are always free to avoid them.

Ann November 20, 2020 - 12:25 PM - 12:25 PM

It would be nice if they where more transparent #1 Ages of those who pass #2 Did those who passed away from Covid have underlying conditions? Being transparent would help lessen the fears people have regarding this virus

WC Resident November 20, 2020 - 1:18 PM - 1:18 PM

@Ann – #1 Ages of those who pass has always been available on the county dashboard which is at https://www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/overview Look for “Deaths by age group”.

#2 Did those who passed away from Covid have underlying conditions? is a complicated gray scale. 100% of us have “underlying medical conditions” of some sort if you include our genetic makeup, race, ethnicity, economic status, and age in the mix. There are occasional media reports of children and seemly extremely healthy young adults with severe cases or who are killed by COVID-19. Being a young healthy white upper-class person is not an automatic get-out-of-jail-for-free card in the COVID-19 game.

It’s also appears that your level of exposure, in amount, duration, and location in or on your body, to the virus is a significant to how badly you will be affected.

The CDC has a web page that lists the various medical conditions that have been identified as leading to potentially severe cases or death from COVID-19. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-with-medical-conditions.html

The CDC also has a web page that shows the increase in risk with increasing age at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/investigations-discovery/hospitalization-death-by-age.html

The CDC also has a web page that shows the increase in risk for you should you be other than white non-Hispanic. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/investigations-discovery/hospitalization-death-by-race-ethnicity.html

Aunt Barbara November 20, 2020 - 12:58 PM - 12:58 PM

Lock us up, put us curfew, so when we come out Covid will explode again.and we can be locked down AGAIN by a bipolar Governor and a Health Dept that makes up figures to fear monger people into wearing masks, that may or may not even work.
.Keep a close watch on the nursing homes, make recommendations, but DO NOT
close small businesses and have us eat out in the cold tryingt to save them from going bankrupt and closing. know Gavin has a million dollar ‘mask deal’ and most likely Amazon and door dash It’s very disturbing when you can’t trust the Governor of your State.
Gavin also knew people would be hoarding again fearing a lock down and loves when he can stock pile toilet paper in his mansion, like his Auntie does with ice cream,

Ann November 20, 2020 - 1:47 PM - 1:47 PM

@WalnutCreekResidence

At the end of the day this virus has a 98% survival rate I have known a few you caught this virus of all ages they all survived it.

WC Resident November 20, 2020 - 3:40 PM - 3:40 PM

@Ann – The 98% survival rate is for people of all ages, medical conditions and other factors that put people more or less at risk. In this county the survival rate is 100% so far if you are age 30 or under and is 69% (31% death rate) if you are age 90 or more. The data I provided earlier allows people to evaluate the risks for themselves.

The county does not provide by-age numbers for those that end up in the hospital, in the ICU, and/or on ventilators. Thus, while there have been no deaths yet for those age 30 and under we don’t know the severity of their cases.

People that are at a low risk of complications or death can still infect others should they have COVID-19. That’s why the health mandates apply to all people. Masks and social distancing help serve to protect against both getting infected and infecting others.

Ann November 21, 2020 - 7:59 AM - 7:59 AM

Closing down the economy is NOT the answer it makes things worse @Walnut Creek residence give that information to Galvin and Nancy maybe they didn’t get the memo
