Thanksgiving – What is everyone making for Thanksgiving dinner? Our dinner will be same as always for us. Me, Jim, and dogs Sid and Lexi. Easy making. We’ll eat about 6:30 pm. A slow roast turkey (14-16 lb); mashed potatoes with generous butter, cream, and some rosemary and green onion; a simple vegetable; sourdough pumpernickel bread. Wine not yet chosen. Apple Crisp and vanilla bean ice cream for dessert. Neither of us likes stuffing or cranberry sauce.
Turkey makes great leftovers and food for dogs’ meals. So easy to debone and freeze Making extra mashed potatoes to make my double cheese mashed potato casserole on Friday.

Sounds nice, I like stuffing, always do stove top. I make my own cranberry sauce, same simple recipe from a 1976 Gourmet Magazine, just cranberry’s cooked with a little sugar, orange just and orange rind.
What is left over I like on a turkey sandwich, with a little mayo and horseradish. I don’t like pumpkin pie, or pumpkin anything. When I was married, or later single and invited other singles over, I made an eggnog mousse pie for dessert, from same 1976 Gourmet magazine, it is sinful, pecan crust, topped with whipped cream and shaved chocolate. Have also at made a cranberry upside down cake, served with either whipped cream or ice cream.
Since I don’t get enough time off to drive down to Pasadena where my daughter lives, I will be spending Thanksgiving day alone, which is fine. Will make a simple dessert, but will enjoy a nice meal.

Since it will be just the 2 of us this year, we are keeping it simple.
Hubby wants a ham, green beans and potato casserole.
Turkey, mashed taters, sweet potatoes, fresh cranberry sauce, cranberry muffins, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, coma on the couch.

Us too this year Roz…no grand kids either. We are keeping it even more simple. We are packing it up and heading to Harris Ranch for a couple days and will have dinner brought to our room. No cooking, no mess, no problem. This will be the first time ever:)

We are having our family thanksgiving dinner on Saturday this year.
Planned so far:
Spice-cured turkey & gravy, grand mariner apricot stuffing, Thanksgiving mashed potatoes, orange cranberry sauce, sour cream & chive dinner rolls, burnt shallot dip, wine & whipped cream for pie.
Not yet planned:
Green veggies, turnips & pie 🥧
Whatever we have and where ever we have there is always a bowl of Spanish rice in the table. We are Latino immigrants and while we are also all Naturalized, those who needed to be, we are from here now. So we get into these traditions all the way!
@MorganPirate – Keeping historical culture alive within the family unit is so very important, in my opinion. Sometimes we do so without even knowing we are doing so.
I love cheese. I have always gravitated toward Danish style cheeses when I need a Blue for salads, or a semi firm cheese for cooking and baking such as a Havarti.
Some years ago while doing genealogy research, I learned that my maternal Danish Grandfather Hans was a lover of cheese. Go figure, apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. He died a decade before I was born. So wish I could have met him. We apparently are very much alike in behavior and personality. For better or worse. 😊
Not finished with the next books but at least one will be done by next week.
In the meantime it was nice to get some rain. Not ready to turn off the outdoor water yet through.
Next week will be Thanksgiving and I want to wish everyone here a really good one however you celebrate it. I will be going to my brother’s place. My sis-in-law called to say one of the cousins is going to set up a zoom meeting with as many of the extended family she can. It will be, sort of, the replacement of the extended family reunion we were suppose to go to in Texas.

Baby Back ribs from Carlos Murphy’s. Tony Romas had a nice spicy sweet version too. Is that Kansas City style? I tried the Hickory Pit ribs once. Never again!

St. Louis BBQ ribs are the best. This is a section of ribs where they are an even thickness, unlike the baby back section. They used to be cheaper than baby back ribs, and then rib tips became all the rage. If you are ever in Nashville, try Fat Boy’s BBQ and you will be amazed.
I’m in the “I love any kind of barbecue” category. I love my baby back ribs, but they do take a lot of effort. My family prefers country ribs, and they are a lot easier to do. So, I usually smoke the country ribs and buy the baby back ribs from a local barbecue joint. But I’m getting really amazing results with smoked pulled-pork using a Boston Butt. Just sayin’
Can’t pick one. All of them ribs are tasty!
B/C Mine are called Finger-Lickin’ Spareribs, ironically, but I use Country Style Pork Ribs. They are browned first and baked in a great-tasting homemade sauce. From Sunset Cook Book of Favorite Recipes, probably out of print at this time. My copy is tattered and dogeared and some of the pages are unreadable from all the spills.

Factionator mentioned beef ribs… Beef ribs are my favorite, but Factionator is correct. They are difficult to find. You either gotta make nice with a butcher or just keep your eyes out. If I’m not making them; a drive out to a Q-Joint in Sacramento is worth the time.
Ps: any of you that par-boil, use an oven, or a crockpot have just ruined the ribs…

His new curfew is total insanity. People are coming out in hoards way earlier in the stores, hoarding items and getting too close to everyone else.
I had to fight off a few X large women with even larger derirrere’s who infringed on my 6 foot distance, making it impossible to escape in a timely matter,. trying to grab the last toilet papers without masks, laughing loudly the whole time.

You didn’t mention Beef Ribs, the meatiest of all Ribs. Very hard to find at restaurants and or Butcher Shops.

I don’t know whether or not I’ve had St. Louis ribs or anything St. Louis. I had A) Baby Back this week, and they sure were great, but I’d have to say E) All of the above. If there were any beef ribs up there they’d win hands down for me. In fact, I think I’ll get some out of the freezer. Oh wait, I have a rib roast in there for our Thanksgiving meal. We’d have made awful pilgrims. I have to be extremely hungry to want turkey.

I am loving the new curfew.
Churches and CrossFit gyms being closed will stop the spread.
While many will lose their jobs we can increase our taxes and cover them.
I do find it funny that Contra Costa County can mandate that the private ambulance company hold training for up to 20 people for a few hours but we should not get together with loved ones.
The children and grandchildren adults in our extended family are 11 strong (plus their spouses), but only three of us still live on the Far Left Coast.
However, we have an active Marco Polo group and are in video contact with one another several times a day…. at will. It’s GREAT!
This year, one grandson-in-law is planning on coaching me in the fine art of ZOOM communication (good luck, Trey!). They all live in four separate Eastern Seaboard states. Although none live more than a 4-5 hour drive from one another, their normal “pods” are NOT with one another, so all of us will be celebrating each in our own homes.
Not sure about my menu yet…. but it will be eaten with thanksgiving and love for our family.

Antler, that sounds pretty fun. My grandson walked me through a couple of Zoom get togethers, and I had no problem. It was nice and easy and lots of fun. Since then our ancient Campfire Girls Camp alumni have had a few Zoom reunions since we had to cancel our in person Council Fire, and it was very good to see everyone, it gave us a little chance to see the girls in their own habitats which was a first in some cases. We even had cocktails “together” once. I sure do wish we could’ve had that around when I was growing up on the opposite coast from my grandparents and the rest of my relatives! Enjoy, and have a Happy Thanksgiving, Antler.

The tri-cycle was not a good fit for me,…just couldn’t get use to stepping off and catching the back tire with my foot. We sold it to a gal, recovering from knee surgery, and it made her day. But about 3 months later someone cut the lock off her bike and stole it,….%#%$%^!!
Damn I hate thieves.
I purchased an adult trike from Camping World about 5 years ago, and though I haven’t ridden it in some time I thoroughly love it because I like to look around while biking. Looking around while riding a two-wheeler was dangerous for me, I had a tendency to fall over!! I’m so sorry to hear about your friend’s trike being stolen!! People are AWFUL!!

Love my Lafayette Walgreens and the Lafayette Walgreens Pharmacy! So today I went to Walgreens Lafayette to shop and pick up a ‘take everyday prescription’ for my dog Sid. It’s a medication that our primary vet doesn’t keep in stock.
Well, a new pharmacist spoke with me. Wanted to be sure Sid was okay with the tablet form for swallowing, otherwise she would order a capsule form to keep on hand for Sid.
Brought years to my eyes. Such thoughtfulness and kindness is indeed present in the world today, even for a dog’s prescription. This is why I will always be an optimistic person. There is truly so much good in the world, if you give yourself a chance to experience it.
There’s more good than bad in the world, and Americans are the best. We help more countries when they are in need than any other country in the world. The American people give to more charitable organizations than anywhere else. Heck, before this COVID thing,I even did some volunteer work at Oakland’s Children’s Hospital, entertaining some really sick children. The best way to experience the good is to turn off the news. The news today will poison your mind.

Regarding a question a couple weeks ago (?) asked by Jojo Potato I think, about whether California Bay Laurel can be used for seasoning food, I didn’t remember this detail then, but I just noticed the jar where I store my bay leaves is an old Spice Islands jar with the original label that says “California Bay Laurel”.

Jojo Potato, Haha! I plan to do a taste test in the future, I bought a tiny baby Laurus nobilis, the Mediterranean Laurel variety! I guess it won’t be very scientific though. I can already see/smell a good bit of similarity. Perhaps with some time I won’t need to go harvesting bay leaves so far from home. Thank you, and I hope you had a very nice holiday too.
Did you ever notice in the chase scene in “Bullitt” the Charger loses 5 hubcaps?
@Dr. Jellyfinger… Actually it was 6 or 7, it’s been a long time since I watched it and counted but it was more than 5.
Watch it again… in one scene you can see the same hubcap come off in 2 different shots and right before the crash at the end you can see 2 hubcaps magically back on the car again and those come off when the car flies off the road into the gas pumps.

Here’s an interesting fact…the Charger driver was James Dean’s passenger in the Porsche Spyder when it wrecked, he pulled Dean from the wreckage.
