Investigation Underway After Inmate Dies In Surgery

by CLAYCORD.com
45 comments

Authorities have opened an investigation into the death of Levele Williams, an inmate at the Martinez Detention Facility, Contra Costa County sheriff’s officials said.

Williams, 32, was apparently in a fight with other inmates on Wednesday and suffered a broken jaw. He was later taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for surgery on his jaw and died from complications while in surgery, according to sheriff’s officials.

Williams, an Oakland resident, had been arrested earlier this month by Pittsburg police on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon among other offenses. He was also a suspect in a slaying.

Anyone with information about Williams’s death is asked to call the sheriff’s investigation division at (925) 313-2600 or through dispatch at (925) 646-2441. Tips can be sent to tips@so.cccounty.us and anonymous voicemail messages can be left at (866) 846-3592.

Sounds like racial inequality..Why did 2 doctors just get indicted in Massachusetts for 70 COVID-19 deaths? Watch out Gavin

Anon September 25, 2020 - 5:39 PM - 5:39 PM

Oh no…..more Protests!!!
Of course, Regular people die all of the time for “routine” surgery.
There is Nothing routine about surgery.

Dirty Dan September 25, 2020 - 5:56 PM - 5:56 PM

If he died in surgery why would anybody on the outside of the jail have any information about his death? I don’t wanna cast aspersions on the guy, but if his criminal history includes anything like the charges of which he was suspected I’d say why bother? I guess the big question is has John Burris gotten involved?

Cyn September 25, 2020 - 6:42 PM - 6:42 PM

@Dirty Dan
I was thinking that also……the people with information about his death should be the people in the operating room.

Mr X September 25, 2020 - 6:05 PM - 6:05 PM

Who cares and why is this news? How many good law abiding citizens die every year in surgery? This guy was a convicted criminal. We need to stop canonizing violent losers that prey on the weakest in our society.

CA craziness September 25, 2020 - 10:51 PM - 10:51 PM

I totally agree with you!

TraumaRx September 25, 2020 - 6:15 PM - 6:15 PM

A full investigation is warranted due to the fact that the sheriff’s at the county detention center are responsible for countless of inmate deaths due to excessive force and lawlessness among officer’s.

Janus September 25, 2020 - 8:41 PM - 8:41 PM

Hey genius, did you notice he died while in surgery conducted by medical professional like you?

Would you like to discuss how many people die from malpractice every year vs how many die while in police custody? Hint: over 250,000 people die each and every year from you medical “professionals” oopsies compared to 500 arrest-related deaths per year by the police.

Sign from Above September 28, 2020 - 9:55 AM - 9:55 AM

Ahhh. Trauma back to his/her old self! Spewing non-sense without any supporting information. Oh, and Janus, most of us here on Claycord have figured out the he/she has no real medical background. How do we know? He/she opened their mouth and it was obvious!

PO'd September 25, 2020 - 6:19 PM - 6:19 PM

Karma?

Perri Mink September 28, 2020 - 12:15 PM - 12:15 PM

It’s a set-up to destroy, not only the person the gov terrorists took into custody, but possibly the certain doctors too. It’s supremest gov vendetta.

Raiderette September 25, 2020 - 6:48 PM - 6:48 PM

🤷🏼‍♀️

Oh, please September 25, 2020 - 7:58 PM - 7:58 PM

I am not sorry for people like this. But I am sorry we are wasting money on on investigation. People die in surgery all of the time. He probably has pre-existing conditions that made him higher risk. I just can’t believe that we have to pay for medical care for people who commit these violent crimes.

Concerned September 25, 2020 - 8:12 PM - 8:12 PM

People die in surgery I highly doubt it was racist. John Mary is an excellent hospital. This was just something that happened. Leave our heroes alone

gail September 25, 2020 - 8:24 PM - 8:24 PM

People die from routine surgery every day. Why are you trying to make this into something else?

Andrew September 25, 2020 - 9:42 PM - 9:42 PM

So basically what you’re telling us is that justice was served. Ok got it. Thanks

Darwin September 26, 2020 - 7:27 AM - 7:27 AM

@sad
I bet he was about to turn his life around.

Dr. Jellyfinger September 26, 2020 - 8:02 AM - 8:02 AM

Sorry Sad….. but I’m not “Convinced”.

Sam September 26, 2020 - 9:53 AM - 9:53 AM

@Darwin
Funny, That’s exactly what his mom said

grandmato3 September 26, 2020 - 11:56 AM - 11:56 AM

@ Sad,
I totally agree with you but that’s frequently what they do here. Whether it’s something like this man dying from surgery complications to some other type of accident, these Claycordites all seem to know what happened and why it happened and somehow it will end up the Dems fault. Either that or they think it’s somehow funny and deserved. Wait till you hear them chat about a car accident when someone is badly injured or dies. Some will say ‘sorry’ and RIP but often the majority will spout off of on why it happened. Wait for it…

Hill September 26, 2020 - 12:09 PM - 12:09 PM

@sad
The point is people die in surgery all the time and we don’t ask for the publics help to find out why. If they believe it had to do with him being in jail thats one , but it doesn’t say that at all. Unexpected deaths happen and are investigated as a slandered to try to determine if it was malpractice or not. Died from complications is not necessary malpractice and is basically why everyone dies in surgery. So right now you have them asking for public help where there is no reason to believe anything was purposely done. It like a felon dying in a car accident, then investigated to see if it was purposely caused because he was a felon.

Rollo Tomasi September 27, 2020 - 1:26 AM - 1:26 AM

“I come here for local news and events”

Yet you find yourself here in the comment section, posting comments yourself. I’d say you come here for more than just local news and events. Virtue signaling comes to mind. Guess what? I will not yield the moral high ground to you or anyone else. Capisce?

By the way, you chide Jellyfinger for pointing out your childish command of the written word. Tell me, why should I consider even for a moment the opinion of someone who will not proofread, or perhaps lacks the ability to proofread, their own words before posting?

Silva September 25, 2020 - 10:00 PM - 10:00 PM

It does seem a bit odd to be asking the public for info if he died from complications while in surgery. Scratching my head on that.

Broken Jaw September 25, 2020 - 10:15 PM - 10:15 PM

So… If he was in a fight with an inmate at a facility that houses other inmates, why is that not being considered as the cause of death? Why was he transferred to Walnut Creek John Muir vs the County hospital down the street? This is just bait.

CalOldBlue September 26, 2020 - 1:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Just spit-balling here, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that John Muir is the only facility in the county that handles trauma cases. https://www.johnmuirhealth.com/services/trauma-services.html

Not news September 25, 2020 - 10:19 PM - 10:19 PM

Want to know what has happened for every person that unexpectedly dies while in medical care… an investigation.

But hey, what we need now are more headlines to grab some attention and raise some pulses.

CA craziness September 25, 2020 - 10:53 PM - 10:53 PM

YEP. time for riots and lotting

Aunt Barbara September 26, 2020 - 12:47 AM - 12:47 AM

32 years old is a bit young to die from a broken jaw and there could have been some foul play or drugs involved. They have to investigate and ask the public if someone has any info that would lead to this, besides medical error.
I’m sure you would want that done for your family member, in prison or not..

Chicken Little September 26, 2020 - 9:33 AM - 9:33 AM

If his jaw was broken, I’m guessing he probably took at least one good blow to the head area, which can easily kill a person of any age.

ilovepopcorn September 26, 2020 - 12:39 PM - 12:39 PM

I agree with you and Sad. People here on this thread are very quick to say they could care less. I am so sorry for that man and the hospital involved and all involved. This is why our society is turning out people who have no hearts. They are cold and selfish.

anon September 26, 2020 - 2:35 AM - 2:35 AM

” assault with a deadly weapon (firearm), felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and having a concealed weapon in his vehicle. In addition, there was a Ramey warrant for his arrest for murder and another warrant with charges that include domestic violence and making criminal threats.”

Sounds like a bad dude.

chuckie the troll September 26, 2020 - 7:24 AM - 7:24 AM

Something happened to someone somewhere, per Rep. Omar

Old Timer September 26, 2020 - 8:00 AM - 8:00 AM

One less to feed and take care of.

Reality September 26, 2020 - 8:49 AM - 8:49 AM

Anon- “bad dude” according to Sad, he just made some mistakes. A lot of them! As for the investigation, he died in custody whether in the jail or on the operating table. The Sheriff will be sued, they need the investigation to articulate that they did everything they could to figure out what happened. When do the protests start at the hospital!! We need to know the names of the surgeons! Were they wearing cameras! Release the video!

Tsa September 26, 2020 - 10:36 AM - 10:36 AM

Anyone with information about the death should call…

Wasn’t he in surgery???

Chuck Williams September 26, 2020 - 11:18 AM - 11:18 AM

Enough force to break a jaw equals enough force to cause a significant head injury which could result in a brain bleed if he by chance was hit more than in just the jaw, like maybe the head. Many trauma patients die durning surgury. To say the medical staff was responcible is irresponcible. Facts are all that matter at this point which none of us have. Janus, I do agree, more people die at the hands of medical professionals that the police each year.

Aunt Barbara September 26, 2020 - 12:02 PM - 12:02 PM

Drugs and anesthesia don’t mix well either.
Autopsy should reveal a cause better than gossip.

Likely a private jet with The Attorney will land at the local airport greeted by the DA who has arrived in a luxury car driven by, and accompanied by, white racist driver and security detail.
The dynamic duo will huddle in a local luxury hotel suite while they concoct the latest plan to terrorize white taxpayers into a full grand jury investigation of the suspicious death of a noble and highly valued citizen who was robbed of a highly productive life. In addition the multi-million lawsuit winnings will provide the family of the highly valued citizen with enough funds to offset the expected earnings of the highly valued.
While the rest of us obey the laws, work for 40 years and try to retire in peace, riots will continue to honor the valued citizen for decades to come.
Praise the Lord.

Natalie September 26, 2020 - 1:19 PM - 1:19 PM

The article says “complications while in surgery”, not “complications from surgery”. Neither the sheriff’s department nor the news article is placing blame on the medical staff. The investigation is regarding who attacked Williams. It’s not an investigation into the medical staff. Regardless of Williams’ status as a criminal, the prison can’t have inmates killing each other.

Rollo Tomasi September 26, 2020 - 2:30 PM - 2:30 PM

The individual died in surgery, which was not a public event. The medical issue giving rise to the surgery, a broken jaw, happened in a jailhouse fight – also not a public event. Perhaps rather than virtue signaling, Sad, popcorn, or Aunt Barbara can explain to us – the general public – why law enforcement thinks the general public can help shed some light on his demise. Perhaps a better use of law enforcement’s time would be investigating all parties DIRECTLY INVOLVED in the death, ie inmates, guards, and medical personnel.

FPN September 28, 2020 - 4:40 AM - 4:40 AM

Calling someone racists to win an arguement is a sure sign your unable to keep you emotions in check. Calling someone a racist does not make you the better person.
