So begins emergency services 4th of July, going to be a long night.

MattfromConcord July 5, 2020 - 10:06 AM - 10:06 AM

Seems to be the only fire last night. Sooo ya know the night wasn’t that long.

RetiredThankGod July 5, 2020 - 12:56 PM - 12:56 PM

So I’m seeing they responded to 67 fires last night in our area….. spoke too soon Matt?

MattfromConcord July 6, 2020 - 9:55 AM - 9:55 AM

@ RetiredThankGod only 16 or so were from fireworks. So now, I will continue to speak early.

Bad Nombre July 4, 2020 - 10:23 PM - 10:23 PM

Ah. So that is what I smell.

Mom2Boys July 4, 2020 - 10:29 PM - 10:29 PM

I live on corner of Treat and Clayton. It’s VERY Smokey and keep seeing fire trucks head that direction 😞

Jess Crider July 4, 2020 - 10:39 PM - 10:39 PM

Does anyone know if it is contained?

America July 4, 2020 - 11:00 PM - 11:00 PM

This is what happens when the empty suits won’t allow a fireworks show presented by professionals. Plus the fact that we were SIP for months! Now people are going nuts! Sounds like a war zone out here.

Sam July 4, 2020 - 11:39 PM - 11:39 PM

This is what happens when a tyrant tells free people what they can and can not do. Nobody is going nuts except Gavin Newsom. The sound you hear if the sweet sounds of freedom. We don’t need professionals to celebrate our independence. We are Americans, we can do it all ourselves…and prefer to. Our state and local governments have disqualified themselves and are subject to arrest for constitutional rights violations. 20 years in prison for deprivation of rights under color of law. Waiting for any sheriff to stand up and arrest these idiots, it’s past time

MattfromConcord July 5, 2020 - 10:10 AM - 10:10 AM

@sam this happens all the time regardless of who is in charge. People WILL find a way to do this. Back in the 70’s my dad and all the dads on the block in Concord would drive to Martinez to buy safe and sane fireworks and set them off illegally. So NOTHING matters on who is in charge. DO NOT blame because things will change and things will still happen and it won’t matter who is in charge.

Sam July 5, 2020 - 10:33 AM - 10:33 AM

@me Definitely not satire. Stand by for your lesson in law.

@matt I know. Stay positive

Anne July 5, 2020 - 11:39 AM - 11:39 AM

This is the 3rd year I’ve lived in Concord and this was the worst year so far. Neighbors were setting off bottle rockets and Roman Candles in their back yards with sparks flying everywhere., There were extremely loud firecrackers until well after midnight. Sirens were everywhere. Even “safe and sane” fireworks can start fires.

How does someone’s freedom get described as doing something dangerous, illegal and frightening in their neighborhood? This isn’t a political thing, it’s an “entitlement” thing.

Sam July 5, 2020 - 12:11 PM - 12:11 PM

@anne You say tomato, I say tomaato 🍅

Anonymous July 5, 2020 - 1:55 PM - 1:55 PM

Women will never get it. I was watching a video of some guys blowing up 55-gallon drums in the country, giggling like school children, and when the camera panned over to the two guys, they were probably 60-years-old.

You have to be a man to really appreciate explosives. 😀

Gittyup July 5, 2020 - 8:32 PM - 8:32 PM

@Me Common Law. Look it up!

Gittyup July 5, 2020 - 8:35 PM - 8:35 PM

@Anonymous Lol. Seriously!

On the hill July 4, 2020 - 11:06 PM - 11:06 PM

Amateur fireworks. I was there and literally saw them going off.

Wait a minute July 4, 2020 - 11:13 PM - 11:13 PM

So many full size fireworks being set off near my neighborhood! Pretty, but scary! I am so thankful it’s not windy tonight!

Sam July 4, 2020 - 11:54 PM - 11:54 PM

Just wait till the BAAQMD try’s to call another “spare the air” day and says you can’t bbq or cut your grass, or heat your home with dead wood. Don’t ever tell free people we can’t do something. Stay in your lane, we the people are done being nice.

LoveMyCity July 5, 2020 - 12:17 PM - 12:17 PM

When were you nice? LOL! Your posts portray a person with little consideration for others in your community. Maybe you just play at being that way, but why not model responsible behavior? Setting off fireworks illegally given the dry vegetation in our area is thoughtless, stupid, and selfish and there is no excuse for it. Every fire required the use of scarce resources and put first responders at risk! But, I doubt our firefighters are important to you. And if anyone in your family has breathing issues you would understand the importance of Spare the Air days.

Sam July 5, 2020 - 1:18 PM - 1:18 PM

The refineries causes 99% of our air problems. Not me cutting my lawn. Why do we have firefighters if we can’t use them. I read that nobody died and no homes or property were lost. That’s a win for contra costa fire. Why would you think they don’t like their jobs? You make them sound weak and not properly equipped. I think they handled themselves beautifully.

Anonymous July 5, 2020 - 2:05 PM - 2:05 PM

BAAQMD sent me a letter in 2007 asking me to scrap my then 20-year-old truck because it was a gross polluter. Aside from the fact they have access to DMV data, the truck has a 2.4L 4-banger with 2 plugs per cylinder that burns so efficient it doesn’t have a SMOG pump. It has always passed SMOG with flying colors. I took a Sharpie and wrote “B*** ME!” on their latter and mailed it back to them. I still have the truck and it still passes SMOG every time. I told myself in 2010 I would buy a new truck when this one dies, but it refuses to die.

Chicken Little July 5, 2020 - 6:51 PM - 6:51 PM

@Anonymous,
I had an ’85 Nissan (body style before yours). That was a darn good truck.

Natalie July 5, 2020 - 12:11 AM - 12:11 AM

Not surprising at all. This will no doubt one of many fires that occurs tonight and tomorrow night.

Concord is being besieged by fireworks. I think it’s the pandemic anxiety plus election anxiety, and the social issues with the protests, and the looting that took place, and everything else in the news. Some people are loosing faith in communal values, and are losing hope. Shooting fireworks without regard of how it effects others is a selfish act. In my opinion, people shooting fireworks are expressing pure anxiety, fear, and anger. These fireworks are a sign that our community is in a bad condition. These aren’t acts of celebration.

Concord police have been inundated with calls, and they are trying to track who is shooting fireworks. They can see them in the sky, and they are doing the best they can to figure out where they are coming from. Too many people are afraid of calling the police, and are too skittish to report their neighbors. In my opinion, the risk of fire so great, that if I knew who was launching fireworks I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to report them.

Along with the fire works all over Concord, there are lots of people in the Monument firing guns tonight. A bullet shot into the air has to land somewhere.

Sam July 5, 2020 - 6:53 AM - 6:53 AM

Looks like the city Is still standing. Maybe all that nanny state “safe and sane” bs just went out the window. That is how July 4th should be from now on. Who needs the government to put on shows when you have so many American patriots. Lol yeah I’m sure they were trying to find thousands of people. I saw the cops grouped up in a couple different parking lot throughout concord chilling and watching the show. Who do you think you are spreading false info to? The only people mad about last night are the traders to America. Who by the way is the minority. The silent majority ain’t so silent anymore, get ready for the biggest political shift the world has ever seen🇺🇸

RTC July 5, 2020 - 7:44 AM - 7:44 AM

Well said Natalie.

Natalie July 5, 2020 - 1:51 PM - 1:51 PM

Sam, given the amount of fires that happened last night, this is not how the 4th of July should be from now on. Fireworks aren’t toys. Professional level fireworks should only be fired by people who know what they are doing

Fireworks can cause permanent hearing damage. Fireworks can also trigger PTSD in people who suffer from the condition. Concord has a lot of veterans, including vets with PTSD. It can trigger PTSD in people who have experience gun violence, and other traumatic events.

There are better ways to honor the spirit of the 4th of July, that don’t involve selfish disruptions to other people’s lives, and don’t present fire hazards.

Gittyup July 5, 2020 - 8:46 PM - 8:46 PM

Firing guns into the air, unfortunately, is an “Oakland thang.” Looks like that’s where Concord is headed. Thanks Concord City Council. It could not have happened without your cooperation.

Old Concordite July 5, 2020 - 12:50 AM - 12:50 AM

Nice work by all our fire and police on a very busy Independence Day. Well done and thank you from a grateful community for hitting this fire hard and fast…..

Hurrah! Happy Fourth!

Bella July 5, 2020 - 3:20 AM - 3:20 AM

This is “getting” old. STOP!!!!

Bella July 5, 2020 - 3:25 AM - 3:25 AM

I reported because it’s been going on for four weeks back to back and Dispatch understandably told me to call non emergency number. I got that, not seeing a fire, but I’ve reported this for again four weeks and tonight, I went outside and watched from back to front of my11k ft property, which I won’t watch go up in flames. Coming from South to North.

JJ July 5, 2020 - 3:44 AM - 3:44 AM

In a perfect world, a bored person would read a book, write a song, or maybe even clean out their garage. Or help an elderly neighbor clean out their garage.

If you are bored with yourself.
Try doing good things.
And stop breaking the law.

Unfortunately, the sqeaky wheels still get the grease.
The grease being media attention.

Mary Fouts July 5, 2020 - 10:53 AM - 10:53 AM

@JJ – Well said!

MoJo July 5, 2020 - 7:46 AM - 7:46 AM

Great job Con Fire. You stopped em all. As bad as the fireworks in and about Concord may have been, I can assure you that it doesn’t compare to what takes place in a certain city on the other side of the tunnel. Before my blessed retirement, I worked many 24 hour shifts on the 4th of July in this unnamed city, which will remain unnamed to protect my secret identity. It was outright mayhem and destruction. Fireworks galore and not the baby ones. Grass fires, structure fires and my favorite activity, gunfire everywhere. Glad to be done with that nonsense and respect to those who are still out there laying line.

Chuckie’s Wife July 5, 2020 - 7:48 AM - 7:48 AM

Man, it sounded like a war zone out there last night! It was way worse than when professional fireworks are being presented. I feel really bad for all the veterans with PTSD and all the scared pets. And this could have gone sideways so many ways… glad there was only one major fire that is now contained.

I agree with Natalie – these fireworks have nothing to do with celebrating independence, but everything with sending a big FU message to the government. This is a sign that things are about to boil over.

The Fearless Spectator July 5, 2020 - 10:46 AM - 10:46 AM

You nailed the message! People feel lied to so they ignore government.

Hopefully things cool off and a boil over is avoided. Perhaps our Governor will resign, that would be most helpful.

Mary Fouts July 5, 2020 - 10:51 AM - 10:51 AM

@Chuckie’s Wife – Last night was the worst for fireworks since I’ve lived in south PH. Loud explosions all over and for a long time. It would be quiet for a few minutes, then start up again. I also heard loud booms to the north most nights for the week prior.

The SF Chron posted online this AM that ConFire was inundated with fireworks started fire calls starting in mid-evening. Spread so thin that each call was limited to one engine responding. Also several firework related injury calls, including a fireworks eye injury to a child.

American Citizen July 5, 2020 - 8:36 AM - 8:36 AM

We love near the Clayton Valley Highlands. there were fireworks going off over our house that looked like rockets at Disneyland. It was crazy. It reminded me of Fallujah

Justifiable languor July 5, 2020 - 9:13 AM - 9:13 AM

I thought the same, almost. Mine was: Who I stupid enough to light fireworks in a dry grass field? A brain dead homeless? or No one. Is that stupid.

Led July 5, 2020 - 2:49 PM - 2:49 PM

Classic example of modern California: only ‘safe and sane’ fireworks are legal, and not even those in most cities. You can’t legally fire a bottle rocket or even a ground blossom. And yet the sky was full of enormous explosions for hours, in cities all over the state. The disconnect between the law on paper and the reality on the ground is practically the definition of CA these days. I guess as long as we prize freedom of movement for goods and people over the Southern border … we will have cheap migrant labor and awesome though illegal home firework shows!

Amy July 5, 2020 - 7:23 PM - 7:23 PM

Great job Contra Costa Fire!
