State Of California: Family Gatherings Discouraged During Independence Day Weekend

July 3, 2020 14:00 pm · 55 comments

The following information is from the State of California:

California Public Health Officials Warn Against Family Gatherings for Fourth of July Weekend:

The California Department of Public Health Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Sonia Angell issued the following statement warning Californians not to gather with people outside of their immediate households this Fourth of July weekend:

“Traditionally, Fourth of July is a time of gathering to celebrate the freedoms this country offers us. This year, however, family gatherings are playing a significant role in the spread of COVID-19. Any time two households mix together, we risk getting each other sick. For some people, especially adults who are older and people with health issues, COVID-19 can have serious and even deadly consequences. Any public or private events this weekend that include people who do not live together in the same household should not happen. This includes family get-togethers.”

She added, “If you live in a county on the county monitoring list, your county should consider cancelling firework shows. In counties not on the list, municipal fireworks displays may still happen, but to watch them, residents must find ways to watch them from their cars and apart from others. Gatherings around these events should be canceled.”

Can I engage in political protest gatherings?

Yes, although in-person protests present special public health concerns.

Even with adherence to physical distancing, bringing members of different households together to engage in in-person protest carries a higher risk of widespread transmission of COVID-19. State public health directives do not prohibit in-person outdoor protests as long as physical distancing of six feet between persons or groups of persons from different households is maintained at all times.

State public health directives do not prohibit in-person indoor protests as long as (1) attendance is limited to 25% of the relevant area’s maximum occupancy, as defined by the relevant local permitting authority or other relevant authority, or a maximum of 100 attendees, whichever is lower, and (2) physical distancing of six feet between persons or groups of persons from different households is maintained at all times. Failure to maintain adequate physical distancing may result in an order to disperse or other enforcement action. Masks and cloth face coverings are strongly recommended.

Participants must maintain a physical distance of six feet from any uniformed peace officers and other public safety personnel present, unless otherwise directed, and follow all other requirements and directives imposed by local health officers and law enforcement, or other applicable authorities.

If you attended a protest, remember that confidential, free testing is available. Find a testing location near you. If you test negative it does not mean that you may not develop COVID-19 later on. Therefore, it is advisable that you self-isolate for 14 days if possible.

Why are they not discouraging protesters from protesting?

Miller July 3, 2020 at 6:07 PM

I’m protesting your question via this reply. See the problem with your question’s wording?

The Fearless Spectator July 3, 2020 at 6:38 PM

Because every protester/looter is a Newsom supporter.

ZZ July 3, 2020 at 2:14 PM

Nope, not listening and haven’t listened to a word any of you and your kind are saying. Using people as guinea pigs, ruining our lives for your political and pharmaceutical experiments.

Yves Harlowe July 3, 2020 at 2:18 PM

Huh. Don’t have any family gatherings. That’s bad. But it’s ok to gather with a few thousand strangers for a protest,

That makes perfect sense .!🤨

AnimalLover July 3, 2020 at 2:37 PM

Gosh, this is an easy one to deal with.
Invite your family members and close friends to meet at Civic Park for a BBQ gathering but require all wear social justice tee shirts and carry signs protesting the statue of David (naked white man representing naked white men). After your meal and protest, tear down the gazebo (usually painted in the dreaded color white and possibly originating in a white-ruled country).

cheeseburguesa July 3, 2020 at 2:39 PM

Protests good, family bad.
Are you serious right now?

Led July 3, 2020 at 3:36 PM

Why can’t they give the same kind of messaging for both kinds of gathering? We encourage everyone not to blend households. Outdoor activities should maintain distancing and avoid sharing utensils and surfaces, whether it is a family get-together or a political protest. Stay a bit apart, stay outdoors, don’t have shared serving utensils, have hand sanitizer handy. Limit size of gatherings even where all that is in place.

It’s just not realistic: they admit tacitly that they can’t stop people from protesting, so they focus on how to minimize risk. Do the same for other gatherings! All or nothing is failed messaging! People outside, spaced apart, being careful and smart: you should be trying to get more of that behavior. Not realistic to pretend that gatherings won’t happen.

TD July 3, 2020 at 5:47 PM

Yeah, they have no credibility left at this point. I’m taking reasonable precautions and using my best judgement, based on available data; because clearly their objectivity have been compromised. I’m not going to any big gatherings, but don’t expect me to agree that large groups of people rioting is safe. We have two viruses, Covid and some other kind of shared psychosis causing people to abandoned common sense and consistency.

Captain Bebops July 3, 2020 at 2:42 PM

I do recognize why they do this and it’s because they don’t want to be sued for not warning the public, but their delivery style is often poor. So they’ve done their job and if you want to ignore them it’s really up to you.

Bad Nombre July 3, 2020 at 2:48 PM

Meeting up with your peeps IS a political protest, right?

Tsa July 3, 2020 at 2:58 PM

What kind of logic is this? Political protesting is OK, but family gatherings not. I’ve not seen any protesters safe distancing or following any directives. This would be funny if it wasn’t so stupid!!! This had be be written by a politician.

Chuckie’s Wife July 3, 2020 at 3:08 PM

I think because protesting (peaceful assembly and petition) is an inalienable right anchored in the constitution, so they cannot make a law forbidding it. They can only discourage it because of the pandemic.

They are also not forbidding family gatherings, but discouraging them, again because of the pandemic. After Mother’s Day and Memorial Day we experienced upticks in COVID-19 cases. After Independence Day it will probably be the same. They are just trying to keep infection rates down.

Of course those bored young people having Covid-19 parties and handing out prizes if you get infected are not helping the situation…

The Fearless Spectator July 3, 2020 at 6:36 PM

A protester can hold a brick and threaten to throw it at a citizen, and apparently they are still a peaceful protester. It’s not until they throw it at you that you can defend yourself and not go to jail.

Gittyup July 3, 2020 at 8:56 PM

I was advised otherwise by Clayton Police when I told them I would take matters into my own hands if a man who had been trespassing on my property ever set foot on it, again. They said they would have to arrest me if I defended myself and my property.

T. Payne July 4, 2020 at 10:59 AM

Yes, because the state of California does not subscribe to the Castle doctrine like many other states do such as Texas and Missouri. In California you can not stand your ground and defend your family and property from aggressors, you are required to retreat, and hope the cops show up and do their jobs. (Which they are being prevented from doing because of the coward politicians we are electing to office) So basically in California you need to bend over and ask for more of the same. Someone once said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. Keep voting Democrat California… 🙂

Boycott The Circus July 3, 2020 at 3:15 PM

LMAO! Thank you for the really good laugh. This may actually be the stupidest thing I have heard in my whole 37 years of life!!!

Sancho Panza July 3, 2020 at 3:27 PM

This almost sounds like a public service announcement about unsafe sex, but in this case substitute protest: “If you attended a protest, remember that confidential, free testing is available.
Family Gathering=No
Protest=Yes, but wear a mask

Tomato Girl July 3, 2020 at 3:42 PM

Of course there’s more cases… their doing a lot more testing and don’t forget the protests. First it was flatten the curve now its wait for a vaccine. This virus will be with us for a long time. Newsolini is plunging this state into a depression. Extending unemployment benefits for 20 more weeks. It’s so obvious that blue state Governors are willingly ruining their state’s economies to try and make President Trump look bad. When he wins in November, will they continue is the question?

Nobody July 3, 2020 at 4:04 PM

I was just at Safeway by Sunvalley Mall. it’s packed with people. There were no shopping carts to be had. Everyone is buying tons of liquor & chips and the usual July 4th fair. I have a feeling there will be a lot of parties and hence a lot more Covid. I really some people don’t understand how serious this virus is. It’s just not worth it.

Yves Harlowe July 3, 2020 at 4:16 PM

I was at Costco this afternoon. It was crazy busy. People were buying the usual 4th of July fare, as I was.

I do understand how serious the virus is, everyone in my family understand that.but we are having a small family gathering. We even have some medical professionals in the family, so we all know. We’ll be outside, having a BBQ. We’ve all gotten together a few times already over the past couple of months, and we’re all still fine. We are careful, no hugging, no kissing, we’re outdoors in the fresh air. It’ll be fine.

Gittyup July 3, 2020 at 9:02 PM

I was at Target, Walnut Creek, yesterday. You wouldn’t know anything was wrong except people are wearing masks and trying to social distance as much as possible in a store full of people, and clerks restocking shelves. I don’t think anyone is taking Gavin seriously, and that’s why he and his advisors keep upping the ante. And, honestly, if Target and Cosco can be open for business, why can’t a sole proprietorship do the same, or a barber shop, a beauty shop, a bookstore … anything else, really? They aren’t going to be packed like these larger stores.

Chuckie’s Wife July 3, 2020 at 4:22 PM

Fed up with our beloved leader?

This is a pretty serious recall effort. You can print out a signature sheet from the website, fill it out and mail it in. Couldn’t be more convenient.

The Fearless Spectator July 3, 2020 at 5:43 PM

2 million signatures needed, we can make this happen! Don’t use drop off stations, there were problems with forms forwarding last time. Mail directly to the P.O. box in Sacramento listed on the form. Follow the directions carefully or your vote won’t count. Let’s dump this zero!

Khloe July 3, 2020 at 4:30 PM

ChuckStir July 3, 2020 at 5:31 PM

Khloe, think about it, the virus has a survivability of about 72 hours max outside its host (person) if even that. These fireworks from China were made many weeks if not months ago. That is one conspiracy theory that is nonsense. Now if you want to talk about JFK I am all ears.

Sam July 3, 2020 at 6:14 PM

You think that’s bad, think of the billion dollar mask purchase from china by Gavin Newsom. All those masks they hand out everywhere are probably contaminated too

nytemuvr July 3, 2020 at 6:30 PM

@Khloe… That’s just ignorant, everyone knows the Government is dropping the Covid in jet’s Chem-trails! Geez!

Doh July 3, 2020 at 7:20 PM

No, you must have started the rumor.
The virus has too short a lifespan dipped in gunpowder and wrapped in paper.

Gittup July 3, 2020 at 8:44 PM

It’s wrapped in fetid pig tissue.

Gittyup July 3, 2020 at 8:45 PM

For transport.

sideline July 3, 2020 at 4:37 PM

…and people say it’s not political…

Floyd July 3, 2020 at 4:49 PM

If people believe that what’s good for the collective trumps individual freedom, we are all doomed. If you’re scared, stay home! This weekend is about celebrating our freedom…. in a freedom free, culture of Karen’s….

Roz July 3, 2020 at 4:55 PM

Too Late,…We’re going to our Neighbor’s House for Dinner.

Silva July 3, 2020 at 7:57 PM

Have a good time, Roz!

russ sayin July 3, 2020 at 5:06 PM

how many people would jump this topic if they actually said “we discourage political protests”? There would be 50 posts about “THEY’RE TAKING OUR FREEDOMS!”

Bob Kazamakis July 4, 2020 at 5:19 AM

The larger issue is that there is clearly preference being given to those who serve a political agenda, while we’re dealing with a lesser problem, being touted as a genuine global health crisis, which should have put all of us in the hospital already, according to what we were initially told.

Bud E July 3, 2020 at 5:06 PM

Don’t let the government tell you to wear a seat belt either., don’t wear helmets, be a true rebel.
I for one am taking this seriously and will be adhering to the recommendations

RANDOM TASK July 3, 2020 at 5:41 PM

Wow can democrats be any more asinine

I am sure most democrat voters are biased for democrats no matter how bad they are slapping them

It amazes me that democrat appointed agencies spew such bias

And then slam American citizens into control or be punished

I have such a low outlook for demorats this November

But also realize that the democrats could take a dem voters child and throw it into a pit and they would still vote dem

How obvious can you be with bias before people actually say hmmm wait what is going on

Voters need to really look around and pay attention to the narrative being thrust upon us

And I dare a democrat to translate this announcement as a health risk and to sip and tow the line
The hypocrisy is so bad it boarders ….no is so bad it’s akin to apartheid

And dem voters are approving of this against America’s citizens

Against children and loved ones and condone it by voting to approve politicians who are slamming Americans with this

I say this because illegals are immune to any policy as they are illegal and the DA has stated she will not prosecute or condone any actions against illegals

This is the kind of thing China and Russia do or even lybia or Saudi Arabia

For dem voters to condone these actions is anti American and in the end
Supporting bias and control over anyone other than a democrat

Just like hitler

The push to effect an election through political corruption and apartheid is insane for people to agree with

Wrong is wrong not matter what party you bow to

America July 3, 2020 at 6:23 PM

Dr. Sonia Angell, the state public health director , was appointed by ….. you got it ! Newscum. She doesnt run it , he does behind her!!! !!! We will all be out this weekend !!!

Gittyup July 3, 2020 at 8:17 PM

Nancy Pelosi has Gavin by the you know whats, and is running the state according to the “progressive” agenda so popular among Democrats, strictly from behind the scenes. He has to listen to her directives. She’s his mentor … with her help he hopes to be President … and, she’s going to make sure he is elected in four years or die trying. Her stamp of approval is all over every word that comes out of his mouth.

94517 July 4, 2020 at 6:44 AM

Nancy and Gavin are related, she’s his aunt. They are in this together he’s not being used, he was raised/groomed for this.

Manny July 3, 2020 at 6:49 PM

Get over it, we’re in a global pandemic if u didn’t notice cause you were throwing a fit

Me July 3, 2020 at 6:55 PM

Everyday, it’s something else…
You allow protesting..and give free testing…that’s right..because you are most likely to be getting sick…or spreading it!
Kinda like hotels for the homeless with free booze and drugs! What is going on?

Look at it July 3, 2020 at 7:14 PM

There’s a reason why a jackass is the DNC logo
“F” um!!

Gittyup July 3, 2020 at 8:12 PM

This makes absolutely no sense to rational human beings.

anon July 3, 2020 at 9:49 PM

If they bothered to tally the political party of those testing positive, I bet 90% would be democrats who got it while irresponsibly looting and rioting.

Those rioters are why we are now spiking and a second shutdown being considered.

anon July 3, 2020 at 9:50 PM

Additional: do you know that contract tracers in New York are forbidden to ask people if they’ve been to protests? That’s how stacked things are for the dems, by the dems, and how little they actually care about human health and the task at hand.

Forbidden to ask where people have been. Contract tracers.

Fred July 3, 2020 at 10:03 PM

BAAAAHH!! Good little sheep you are. You deserve a pat on the bed

Tugboat July 4, 2020 at 7:32 AM

When was the last protest where physical distancing and other protocols were adhered too. Whoever wrote this directive is completely out of touch with reality.

ilovepopcorn July 4, 2020 at 9:10 AM

Yes they are allowing far too many peeps in the big box stores. I went to Costco in Concord and I could not believe it. I was so glad to get out of there. Costco in Danville is amazing. They are not packed like sardines as they say. I think the CDC is promoting family gatherings six feet apart outside. I do think they should not have allowed the protestors to function without masks and the social distancing rule. Black lives matter but not enough to take your own life. So get with it. I hope that in the future we will all comply to crush this curve. Hospitalizations are the main indicator of the rise not the testing. This is like a true nightmare to think we all must stay away from each other. So tired of he people who think it is their right to not wear masks and not to follow the mandates. It is patriotic to wear the masks because you are saying you care about your country. Also what is notably missing in our culture is the lack of caring for each other. We are so divided and full of hate. Like snarling biting vicious dogs. How will that ever change. I think that is part of the rise in COVID because of this attitude not giving a damn about anything.

Real American July 4, 2020 at 10:08 AM

Spare us your lectures, and own your divisiveness and hatred! You preach tolerance, but only for those you agree with.

AnimalLover July 4, 2020 at 1:25 PM

Too much butter and salt.
Also, suffering from pathological levels of white guilt.
Fumes emitting from MacMasions are dangerous, malignant and infect family and friends. Was personally infected by same at one time but got away. Far away.

Anonymous July 5, 2020 at 2:10 PM

It’s pretty clear this experiment of placing women in all levels of government was a failure and I think it’s time for men to take their rightful place as our nation’s leaders. We’ve given this nation to the Karens and now we are paying the price.
