California Public Health Officials Warn Against Family Gatherings for Fourth of July Weekend:
The California Department of Public Health Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Sonia Angell issued the following statement warning Californians not to gather with people outside of their immediate households this Fourth of July weekend:
“Traditionally, Fourth of July is a time of gathering to celebrate the freedoms this country offers us. This year, however, family gatherings are playing a significant role in the spread of COVID-19. Any time two households mix together, we risk getting each other sick. For some people, especially adults who are older and people with health issues, COVID-19 can have serious and even deadly consequences. Any public or private events this weekend that include people who do not live together in the same household should not happen. This includes family get-togethers.”
She added, “If you live in a county on the county monitoring list, your county should consider cancelling firework shows. In counties not on the list, municipal fireworks displays may still happen, but to watch them, residents must find ways to watch them from their cars and apart from others. Gatherings around these events should be canceled.”
Can I engage in political protest gatherings?
Yes, although in-person protests present special public health concerns.
Even with adherence to physical distancing, bringing members of different households together to engage in in-person protest carries a higher risk of widespread transmission of COVID-19. State public health directives do not prohibit in-person outdoor protests as long as physical distancing of six feet between persons or groups of persons from different households is maintained at all times.
State public health directives do not prohibit in-person indoor protests as long as (1) attendance is limited to 25% of the relevant area’s maximum occupancy, as defined by the relevant local permitting authority or other relevant authority, or a maximum of 100 attendees, whichever is lower, and (2) physical distancing of six feet between persons or groups of persons from different households is maintained at all times. Failure to maintain adequate physical distancing may result in an order to disperse or other enforcement action. Masks and cloth face coverings are strongly recommended.
Participants must maintain a physical distance of six feet from any uniformed peace officers and other public safety personnel present, unless otherwise directed, and follow all other requirements and directives imposed by local health officers and law enforcement, or other applicable authorities.
If you attended a protest, remember that confidential, free testing is available. Find a testing location near you. If you test negative it does not mean that you may not develop COVID-19 later on. Therefore, it is advisable that you self-isolate for 14 days if possible.

Gosh, this is an easy one to deal with.
Invite your family members and close friends to meet at Civic Park for a BBQ gathering but require all wear social justice tee shirts and carry signs protesting the statue of David (naked white man representing naked white men). After your meal and protest, tear down the gazebo (usually painted in the dreaded color white and possibly originating in a white-ruled country).
Protests good, family bad.

Why can’t they give the same kind of messaging for both kinds of gathering? We encourage everyone not to blend households. Outdoor activities should maintain distancing and avoid sharing utensils and surfaces, whether it is a family get-together or a political protest. Stay a bit apart, stay outdoors, don’t have shared serving utensils, have hand sanitizer handy. Limit size of gatherings even where all that is in place.
It’s just not realistic: they admit tacitly that they can’t stop people from protesting, so they focus on how to minimize risk. Do the same for other gatherings! All or nothing is failed messaging! People outside, spaced apart, being careful and smart: you should be trying to get more of that behavior. Not realistic to pretend that gatherings won’t happen.
Yeah, they have no credibility left at this point. I’m taking reasonable precautions and using my best judgement, based on available data; because clearly their objectivity have been compromised. I’m not going to any big gatherings, but don’t expect me to agree that large groups of people rioting is safe. We have two viruses, Covid and some other kind of shared psychosis causing people to abandoned common sense and consistency.
I do recognize why they do this and it’s because they don’t want to be sued for not warning the public, but their delivery style is often poor. So they’ve done their job and if you want to ignore them it’s really up to you.

What kind of logic is this? Political protesting is OK, but family gatherings not. I’ve not seen any protesters safe distancing or following any directives. This would be funny if it wasn’t so stupid!!! This had be be written by a politician.
I think because protesting (peaceful assembly and petition) is an inalienable right anchored in the constitution, so they cannot make a law forbidding it. They can only discourage it because of the pandemic.
They are also not forbidding family gatherings, but discouraging them, again because of the pandemic. After Mother’s Day and Memorial Day we experienced upticks in COVID-19 cases. After Independence Day it will probably be the same. They are just trying to keep infection rates down.
Of course those bored young people having Covid-19 parties and handing out prizes if you get infected are not helping the situation…
A protester can hold a brick and threaten to throw it at a citizen, and apparently they are still a peaceful protester. It’s not until they throw it at you that you can defend yourself and not go to jail.
I was advised otherwise by Clayton Police when I told them I would take matters into my own hands if a man who had been trespassing on my property ever set foot on it, again. They said they would have to arrest me if I defended myself and my property.
Yes, because the state of California does not subscribe to the Castle doctrine like many other states do such as Texas and Missouri. In California you can not stand your ground and defend your family and property from aggressors, you are required to retreat, and hope the cops show up and do their jobs. (Which they are being prevented from doing because of the coward politicians we are electing to office) So basically in California you need to bend over and ask for more of the same. Newsolini is plunging this state into a depression. Extending unemployment benefits for 20 more weeks. It’s so obvious that blue state Governors are willingly ruining their state’s economies to try and make President Trump look bad. When he wins in November, will they continue is the question?
I was just at Safeway by Sunvalley Mall. it’s packed with people. There were no shopping carts to be had. Everyone is buying tons of liquor & chips and the usual July 4th fair. I have a feeling there will be a lot of parties and hence a lot more Covid. I really some people don’t understand how serious this virus is. It’s just not worth it.
I was at Costco this afternoon. It was crazy busy. People were buying the usual 4th of July fare, as I was.
I do understand how serious the virus is, everyone in my family understand that.but we are having a small family gathering. We even have some medical professionals in the family, so we all know. We’ll be outside, having a BBQ. We’ve all gotten together a few times already over the past couple of months, and we’re all still fine. We are careful, no hugging, no kissing, we’re outdoors in the fresh air. It’ll be fine.
I was at Target, Walnut Creek, yesterday. You wouldn’t know anything was wrong except people are wearing masks and trying to social distance as much as possible in a store full of people, and clerks restocking shelves. I don’t think anyone is taking Gavin seriously, and that’s why he and his advisors keep upping the ante. And, honestly, if Target and Cosco can be open for business, why can’t a sole proprietorship do the same, or a barber shop, a beauty shop, a bookstore … anything else, really? They aren’t going to be packed like these larger stores.

how many people would jump this topic if they actually said “we discourage political protests”? There would be 50 posts about “THEY’RE TAKING OUR FREEDOMS!”
The larger issue is that there is clearly preference being given to those who serve a political agenda, while we’re dealing with a lesser problem, being touted as a genuine global health crisis, which should have put all of us in the hospital already, according to what we were initially told.
