Health Departments (Including Contra Costa) Urge Bay Area Residents To Stay Home On Independence Day

by CLAYCORD.com

Health officials across the Bay Area are urging residents to celebrate the Independence Day holiday from the comfort of their own home this weekend.

“Nobody wants to be cooped up, or to miss out on the holiday,” said Dr. Chris Farnitano, Contra Costa County Health Officer. “But the more we come together in groups, the more COVID-19 spreads in the community. And the more it spreads, the more it endangers older adults and others at high risk of serious illness.”

As of today, Contra Costa County (population, 1.1M) has a total of 3,326 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 937 active cases. 2,311 people have fully recovered, 78 people have died. 53 of those deaths were patients in long-term care facilities. Currently, 41 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Contra Costa County, according to the Health Department.

Gavin Newsom keeping his Plumpjack winery in Napa open. But the rest of us must shut down.

Gavin Newsom is a hypocrite.

Gittyup July 2, 2020 - 10:07 PM - 10:07 PM

Please sign the Recall Newsom Petition. He must be removed before he can do any further damage. Newsom only won his race with Cox by a very small margin and his behavior since taking office has been abominable. Perhaps Cox, a businessman, would be willing to run again for the office. I believe he has a better grasp of the dangers of an economic shutdown, among other things.

Dan July 3, 2020 - 6:48 AM - 6:48 AM

I dont necessarily agree with everything that Newsom does but I will not sign a petition to recall him over COVID. His approach has not been perfect but many governors are starting to follow his lead. Now we need the citizens to step up and do the right thing. Wear your mask.

Gittyup July 4, 2020 - 3:36 AM - 3:36 AM

@Doh Then, sign a petition to recall Newson for arbitrarily suspending the death penalty during his time in office when it had been put to a vote and the citizens of California wanted it. He ignored it, no, he just tossed out a vote put to the people like it didn’t matter. Shocking. Or, sign it because he invited the entire world to California for their abortions at taxpayer expense. Or, sign it because he suspended sales tax on women’s personal hygiene products, but not on men’s. Equality is not his goal, it is his nemesis. Sign it because he has committed one transgression after another since entering office.

Ilovepopcorn July 2, 2020 - 4:04 PM - 4:04 PM

Oh yes! Stay home.

Boycott The Circus July 2, 2020 - 5:55 PM - 5:55 PM

Hell No! Going swimming and BBQing =) And I can do it safely and responsibly thank you very much. Enough with you and telling everyone to wear a mask. You can not control millions of people. And the more you tell someone they can’t do something, the more they do it, so Elsa, just let it go already.

Rolaids July 3, 2020 - 8:11 AM - 8:11 AM

@ Boycott the Circus . During WWII, the federal government ‘controlled millions of people’ and told everyone what they could and could not do for the purpose of defeating the Nazis and Japanese. People were issued ration books. Car tires were scarce because the government commandeered all the rubber. The nation sacrificed together, and the enemy was defeated together. And when it was all over, the rights, freedoms, and liberties that were suspended for the war effort were returned. Thank God this generation is not the one that had to meet that challenge.

Janus July 3, 2020 - 10:30 AM - 10:30 AM

Rolaids

Rights and freedoms were suspended? Other than just saying right and freedoms were suspended. Please be specific for us not so familiar with the great history of this nation.

You mean like when Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the rounding up Japanese Americans and putting them into concentrations camps for the good of America? Seizing them and their property without due process of law and allowing them ZERO redress of their grievances?

Or when FDR refused to obey a United States Supreme Court order to release them?

Or when FDR tried to stack the US Supreme Court with more justices friendly to his beliefs so he could keep them prisoners in their own county among other reasons? Like that you mean?

How about the fact that Native Americans only because US Citizens and were guarantee suffrage in 1924 yet Blacks were granted citizenship and suffrage in 1868, 44 years earlier.

Please equate the Government converting the economy into a war effort and the shortage it cause the civilian populous with the Government mandating the wearing of masks and restricting the right of peaceable assembly. I’m having trouble seeing the connection. Please connect the dots for me.

Just because the Government says it for your own good, doesn’t make it so nor does it make it lawful.

I suggest you spend sometime researching the Vichy Government, they might have a position for you.

SF oh July 3, 2020 - 12:01 PM - 12:01 PM

@ Rolaids – Although I admire the “we can do it” spirit of WWII – a lot of fishy business can go on when the government is given a free pass. I prefer the public speaking up and questioning what our “leaders” are doing. Very few elected officials have the peoples’ best interest at heart – I actually can’t think of one.

Anon July 3, 2020 - 9:56 PM - 9:56 PM

@Janice

You should read about the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niihau_incident to better understand why internment happened. It is always conveniently left out when discussed or even when high school students are being taught about internment. Short version is two Japanese Americans spontaneously and without prior planning betrayed America and aided a Japanese pilot when he crash landed on Niihau, betraying America. America was terrified other Japanese Americans would act similarly, turn treasonous once it seemed the Japanese had the upper hand, as these two actually, factually did.

It’s not like internment came out of no where, that is was an act of racism. Americans were terrified because two Japanese Americans HORRIFICALLY failed the loyalty acid test and they were worried others would, too.

Janus July 4, 2020 - 12:35 AM - 12:35 AM

@ Anon

I have read it before, did you?

One isolate incident on one remote Hawaiian island and for that you round up 120,000 Americans both on the island and mainland and put them into concentration camp. For no other reason other than their race.

Please Anon, tell me what law allowed that to occur? – I will save you the effort of Googling it. There isn’t one. FDR simply wrote an executive order and suddenly those protections, those endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights “guaranteed” by the United States Constitution disappeared for these American Citizens.

Just like this pandemic, the moment the Constitution gets in the way of what the Government wants to do, the Government suspends it. But hey, so long as they are nice enough to give them back when it is convenient for the Government it is okay, Right?

Anon prior to and during WWII was there a German American Bund and Fascist League of North America (umbrella group for fascist Italian-Americans) actively operating in the United States? Why yes there was. Were there German and Italian American actively spying for the Axis during the war? Why yes there were. Were there German and Italian Americans who were attempting to actively sabotage the war effort? Why yes there were.

At anytime during WWII did FDR round up all German and Italian Americans and put them into concentration camps without due process law like the Japanese Americans? Why no he did not. Why would that be Anon?

Perhaps you should read about the Unites States Army 442nd Infantry Regiment (1944–1946) a segregated unit made up entirely of Japanese Americans – Many of the soldiers from the continental U.S. had families in concentration camps while they fought abroad for a country that had illegally disenfranchised their families AND imprisoned them without due process of law.

The men of the 442nd earned 21 Medals of Honor, 52 Distinguished Service Cross, 1 Distinguished Service Medal, 560 Silver Stars (plus 28 Oak Leaf Clusters for a second award), 22 Legion of Merit Medals, 15 Soldier’s Medals, 4,000 Bronze Stars (plus 1,200 Oak Leaf Clusters for a second award) and 9,486 Purple Heart earned during WWII.

If FDR had rounded up all German and Italian Americans like he did the Japanese Americans your rationalization for violating a group of people’s Constitutional rights for no other reason then the color of their skin would still be unconscionable but in the fervor of war understandable; however, he did not. He singled out a race of people based on one isolated incident and ignored the other active threats.

The ENDS DO NOT JUSTIFY THE MEANS. Either we are a Democratic Republic with the rule of law and protections or we are an Oligarchy with the rule of whim and caprice. You cannot have it both ways.

chuckie the troll July 2, 2020 - 4:11 PM - 4:11 PM

I don’t trust my government! And certainly not Medical officials who ignore the damage caused by the measures they prescribe and the behaviors they proscribe.

If Farnitano was actually good at his job, he would be able to tell us if more people are committing suicide and overdosing now than the same time last year. He’d be able to approximate how many people have not been diagnosed with cancer, high BP, diabetes, coronary heart disease, etc… because people are staying away from the doctor.

Since the lockdown began, for instance, over 2,000 people in Contra Costa County should have been diagnosed with cancer. Imagine the harm caused by delayed diagnosis for all of these conditions, and then tell me we have anything to celebrate.

Yup July 2, 2020 - 4:41 PM - 4:41 PM

Well said.

Ilovepopcorn July 2, 2020 - 5:27 PM - 5:27 PM

Kaiser covers all bases. Nobody is left with no treatments during this time. No matter what the curve has to be flattened or else we all will meet our demise. You can adapt all kinds of off the wall beliefs but the fact remains that COVID-19 is deadly and real. The “government” did not make it up. The protocols are to be followed and are encouraged by all institutions. Your super market, your hospitals,
everywhere you go. You must wear your masks and social distance.
You sure want to keep your guns but you just hate behaviors that protect yourself and others. So being Independent is the very culture we have now that is the opposite way we must behave. How ironic. We must conform to giving up our old ways and do what is best for OTHERS AND OURSELVES FOR A CHANGE. Too bad but this is a built in wood shed. If you f up you and I will be f .

Time to Go July 2, 2020 - 6:41 PM - 6:41 PM

Where was the concern when thousands out protesting? Now they want those who were not disobeying orders to obey again? Strike force? What a joke.

Enforce all laws and executive orders all the time, that will stop COVID and the hypocrisy. That is TRANSPARENCY! Stop picking and choosing what fits your agenda and trying to defend it.

Gittyup July 2, 2020 - 9:54 PM - 9:54 PM

Newsom and liberals took a page straight out of Animal Farm, “Some animals are more equal than others.” Everyone sacrificed to get the hospitalizations under control, when suddenly protesters, looters, and rioters became “more equal” and set us back to start over … and don’t tell me they didn’t. It doesn’t take a full ounce of common sense to know that large gatherings like that allow for the transmission of the virus. We can call it the “George Floyd effect” because that’s exactly what it is. Why sugarcoat it like Democrats always do?

Sunny Day July 2, 2020 - 4:26 PM - 4:26 PM

In short, I will be safe and take care of myself but I am not going to stay home and not enjoy this holiday the way I want to. These officials are not my parents and they have no right to tell me what to do , where to go and how I want to do..

Puffandstuff July 2, 2020 - 6:21 PM - 6:21 PM

@ ilovepopcorn…. Kaiser is not covering all bases? Actually, I’m not even sure what you are trying to say. I’m assuming you think they are still business as usual but they are not
Pap smears , mammograms cancelled. Physicals are video only even for 89y/old! Kid’s physicals only for under two y/o.

It just goes to show how really arbitrary and unimportant those tests and physicals truly are.

As a Vulnerable, I was planning on staying in seclusion, however, the above mention of the NewScum winery sounded so appealing that a visit yonder sounds delightful.

Alternatively, organizing a rally at Civic Park inviting 100 liberal, guilt-ridden, MacMansion dwelling, suddenly-caring women seems equally
delightful and completely allowable within the new normal double standard.

Liberal Ladies, wake-up! Your precious children/grandchildren will reap the horror of your ridiculous guilt for decades.

My sister had to wait for a heart procedure for over two months so I guess I am making things up. She finally got it done last week.

There are 24 deaths in the whole county outside of long care homes. Wonder how many died or will die because they couldn’t get their heart or cancer checked. Us being an old dude and dudess we will stay home.

So….effectively, after about 5 months of being shut down….what will the economic impact be for thousands of businesses, trying to start back up while being FIVE months in arrears….on everything. Unless the government makes them (me) whole, there will be massive failures and bankruptcies….not now, but starting around end of 3Q going into 4Q 2020.

It will be systemic, from the Tenant, to the Landlord, to Financial Services, to the Stock markets & Investors. My business plan (Restaurant/Bar) by then, will have been realigned to take advantage of Biden/Warren’s revamping of the Federal Bankruptcy Code, come 1Q 2021….provided, Covid-19 doesn’t get me first.

The Fearless Spectator July 2, 2020 - 6:02 PM - 6:02 PM

There is an article published today on SF Gate, entitled “Gavin Newsom asked to reconcile support for protestors with new warnings on gatherings” by Eric Ting.

KCBS Radio’s Doug Sovern nailed him to the wall with a question about Newsom’s selective enforcement and preferential treatment given to protesters. It’s the first time I have seen anyone ask him anything except soft ball questions. As you might imagine, he weaves an answer a first grader wouldn’t accept. Still worth a read.

anon July 3, 2020 - 10:34 PM - 10:34 PM

@ Speccy

Hell yeah I think it’s worth quoting it’s so stupid: ”

“I maybe was unique in my household but I don’t think I was, I think it was universally taught: Just because someone else is doing it, doesn’t mean you should,” Newsom said. “People know what the right thing to do is. I encourage them to do the right thing. And people also understand that we have a Constitution, we have a right to free speech and we are all dealing with a moment in our nation’s history that is profound and pronounced… but I recognize the dichotomy and to the extent the dialectic between those examples and all I can offer is this consideration: Do what you think is best not only for you but for the health of the people you love.””

Do you guys know George Floyd was a violent felon who once put a loaded handgun to a pregnant black woman’s stomach during a home invasion in an attempt to make her reveal cash and/or drugs? He had a long criminal history that you can review. He also had a huge, lethal dose of fentanyl and a sizable dose of methamphetamine in his system when he died oh a heart attack, as noted in his toxicology and autopsy.

From the ABAHO Wiki page “The health officers act in unison to avoid political pushback.” Well you don’t say. Organized health mafia acting in unison to avoid pushback. The people are sick.

Me as well! Tahoe for the 4th! If I cannot have fireworks and parades, then Tahoe it is!

Lock myself up and stay inside on Independence Day? Yeah right!

The idiot in the governors office can go pound sand with his little gestapo strike teams. Business in Tahoe is booming right now! Pretty sure his wineries are doing well too. The sheep (ILP, Hanns) need to wake up!

ManBearPig July 2, 2020 - 7:56 PM - 7:56 PM

Don’t worry, we’re just peacefully protesting so the Governor is a-ok with it.

AnimalLover July 3, 2020 - 1:39 PM - 1:39 PM

Changed my mind. Won’t be celebrating the 4th by visiting Gravel’s winery or organizing a protest in Civic Park. Have decided to tear
down the statute of David instead and any copies of the statute of David. Better yet, all statutes of naked white men for two reasons.

One – size does matter
Two – white marble is racist

Europe has gotten the virus under control because everyone heeded the advice. New infections there are almost zero.

American infections are rising to new daily records to the point we are not welcome to visit Europe.

Have any of you mask “rebels” considered you might be part of the problem? You wear shoes and shirts into stores or no service; you use seat belts in cars and planes; you have yourself and your luggage searched at the airports without rebelling. Why do you have a problem with masks and distancing durin a pandemic?

Bobfished July 3, 2020 - 10:08 AM - 10:08 AM

Gavin Newsom supports protestors who gather in large groups to protest America on the Fourth of July.
Gavin Newsom does not support people who gather on the Fourth of July to celebrate America.

Gittyup July 4, 2020 - 3:11 AM - 3:11 AM

Gavin Newsom’s whole agenda is anti-American. I wear a mask when I do my essential errands and I social distance. However, that, and avoiding gatherings (which are modeled on a pandemic that occurred a hundred years ago) seems ridiculous “science” for a nation that regularly sends astronauts to visit a space station.

Ed July 2, 2020 - 11:46 PM - 11:46 PM

If Gavin really worries, is going to send his stoke team to all of these protesters and issue tickets and admonish them for gathering in large numbers? He will not. Until then, he can just stuff it. I am not listening and obeying the dictator. Check this website that lists a lot of events were large gatherings are going to happen, https://sf.funcheap.com/

Boycott The Circus July 3, 2020 - 7:47 AM - 7:47 AM

When will the health department, politicians, people on here preaching to wear your masks get the fact that the more you tell someone NOT to do something, the more that someone will do it? Everywhere I have been that has been indoors, people are always wearing a mask. We don’t have to wear a mask outside or in our cars so what more do these people want? And again OUR numbers are low.
