Gov. Newsom Says State Must Slow Reopening

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that the state must slow its process of reopening during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Newsom used the metaphor of a light dimmer switch in outlining the state’s current approach to reopening the economy as positive COVID-19 tests have increased over the last two weeks, even when accounting for increased
testing capacity.

Between June 15 and Monday, the state’s 14-day average testing positivity rate climbed from 4.4 percent to 5.5 percent. Newsom also said the state’s seven-day positivity trend is at 5.9 percent. During that time, the
state’s testing capacity rose well over 100,000 per day.

“Five-point-five percent is of concern,” Newsom said. “It’s not where some other states that are generating headlines are — they’re substantially higher — but we don’t like the trend line.”

Newsom indicated Friday the state’s coronavirus trend line was moving the wrong way, particularly in certain areas of the state such as Imperial County.

In addition to the county-by-county increases in coronavirus cases, Newsom said more than 25 percent of inmates at San Quentin State Prison, as reported by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, have contracted the coronavirus.

Newsom said the state Legislature plans to hold an oversight hearing about the situation at the prison.

The state also plans to release 110 inmates at San Quentin who meet various criteria such as being convicted for a non-violent offense and not being a sex offender.

“The challenge is, only 40 of them have a place to go,” Newsom said. “So, the question is do you make a bad situation worse by releasing someone that’s not ready to be released because they don’t have a place to stay.”

Health officials across the state have confirmed 216,550 cases, including 5,936 deaths, as of Monday.

Additionally, 4,776 people are hospitalized in the state with the coronavirus and 1,465 are in intensive care units, according to state data.

Because a person was not convicted of a violent crime, does not mean that person did not commit a violent crime. How many times do we hear about crimes being pleaded down to a lessor charge? A drug dealer for instance, could have been arrested for assault and battery, along with various drug and weapons charges, and the DA will drop the assault and battery and weapons charges, and possibly some of the drug charges and make a deal to plead guilty to drug possession and sales.. Plea deals happen everyday in court.

Great point.
Newsom is crazed.

4th generation CCC June 30, 2020 - 2:27 PM - 2:27 PM

A prosecuter will be more likely to drop a drug charge than a violent offense. Drugs are usually the least important of charges.

Population of Ca. 39 million with a positivity rate around 5%. Based on the positivity rate approximately 1.95 million people have or had Covid in Ca.

If you believe that 100% of the 5,936 deaths reported were actually Covid related the death rate is .003% or a survival rate of 99.997%.

The virus is real and ultra contagious. That said this shut down has caused more damage than the virus. We need to channel all resources and testing to protect the elderly, and open up immediately.

Captain Bebops June 30, 2020 - 9:55 AM - 9:55 AM

Cooler heads prevail. Yes it is a virus but not really a killer. It’s been hyped as one for a political control agenda. Yearly those whose are in poor health die even from a common cold but it is less than 1% of the population. Newsom is under the control of his handles as other governors and bureaucrats are. If he wants to be a real hero just expose his handlers.

What are you defining as elderly? Over what age? 60? 80?
What about those in jail and prisons?
What about the homeless?
And those who work in close quarters in service, manufacturing and construction jobs?
How about we just all work together to minimize the risk of exposure!

3 months ago it was stay locked down in order to “flatten the curve” to spare the healthcare system and avoid ICU bed shortages. 3 months later it’s all about cases, cases, cases. There is a reason for this. #Plandemic-19

reason June 30, 2020 - 10:53 AM - 10:53 AM

The curve has stopped flattening. We have significantly more confirmed cases now each day than we did three months ago. When cases rise, the curve does too. What about this do you not understand?

RANDOM TASK June 30, 2020 - 9:20 AM - 9:20 AM

yep the plea deal ….and the democrat DA has stated several times she will plead out crimes as she wants none in jail ….
and if your illegal you get pleaded out right away and released or given community service …..lol

this one party state is showing the corruptness of socialism and communism as well as favor for criminals

why ….well if we look at it what does that do
well it creates dissention amongst the people some favoring and some not
what does that do for a unopposed democratic party politician
well it allows them to favor a side and push their agenda ….of more chaos

look they pushed the narrative when crime was rising the politicians said well these homeless are just trying to eat and survive ….

that led to division and then the politicians said well ….perusing them and booking them and jailing them is mute they have no money for fees so they sit in jail that costs money for guards and food ….

so hey here is an idea we can put into law

lets lower the threshold for pursuit of these low crimes by changing the law
yeah thats the ticket
so this new law will allow them to steal upwards of 999 dollars and in actuality it will be like maybe 50 maybe 100 -200 ….it just has to appear in the books that way incase they accidently steal a very expensive laptop that being bums would not know anything about the increased value

so the politicians pushed this narrative on the ones who were for favoring the poor bums …oh sorry the homeless bum who wants nothing to do with society and actual despises it

and of course the lemmings passed since they dont care they just want their welfare and unemployment that is provided by the dems ….and well the union people have to vote dem because well its obvious

so it passed and the crime rate doubled on theft …..
and the act of breaking and entering your vehicle turned into a non criminal act …..as it fell below the 999dollars in full theft amount

a new outside mall the veranda is a real look at the policy failure ….that has spread to the entire city here and abroad

the democrat media does not report it or have any opposition

so we are living with legalized theft and can do nothing about it

now with covid ….here we go releasing criminals who are sick ….uhhhh does that make since

what happened to quarantine if your sick
what happened to protecting the other people from an infected person
like a criminal is going to adhere to any rules like a mask and sip

ridiculous that there is not any protest to this …..

why is a gov allowed to release criminals early that are sick and infectious

if trump was releasing covid patients ….he would be brought up on charges and have pelosis panties in tirade and have here uttering broken nonsense to the media all over the place …..asking people to hate and accost the potus

why are people in this state following lunacy and then voting to increase it

This is from the New York Times yesterday. It’s how Newsom keeps this outrage going, and going, and going…

“Coronavirus Jumps the Border, Overwhelming Hospitals in California
Hospitals are airlifting patients to facilities hundreds of miles away to handle an influx of Americans and U.S. green card holders sickened in Mexico.”

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/07/us/coronavirus-border-mexico-california-el-centro.html

Are you awake yet?

Puffandstuff June 30, 2020 - 11:33 AM - 11:33 AM

YES! Thank you Noj! I feel like no one is listening or understanding!
Also, Newsom started the outbreak in SQ by bringing covid positive inmates from LA to SQ which is what started the outbreak in there.

There is no real transparency from CCC so all these positive new cases could be from anywhere

LL Cool J June 30, 2020 - 10:22 AM - 10:22 AM

“Blah Blah Blah”, is all I hear when Gruesome speaks.

They are counting TESTS, not cases. You can tested once and then again and it’s count as “TWO” cases! Same person equals two cases??? And a case doesn’t mean you are sick or contagious, it could’ve been a positive antibody test which means you were exposed and now have antibodies.. Some nurses turned in new, unused tests and they came back positive. So are the swabs tainted or the tests faulty? Or both?

Lots of people reporting that they got multiple tests within a day and getting differing results.

During lock down almost no one could get tested. After the riots and things starting to open up (and people going back to work and getting tested), the testing has ramped up exponentially in comparison to the testing rate during the lock down.

It’s a sham. Wake up.

Reason June 30, 2020 - 10:55 AM - 10:55 AM

Wrong! Each test is counted in the total number of tests conducted, but each confirmed case counts only one time towards the total number of confirmed cases. See the difference?

Yoyohop June 30, 2020 - 12:08 PM - 12:08 PM

@Reason,

At least in CCC, you are incorrect. According to our health officer, Dr Farnitano, a person can be couned twice or more as a Covid stat

In the same briefing he also confirmed that our numbers include patients imported from other CA counties.

In addition some Alameda County residents are being counted among CCC stats and vice versa.

When the testing amount was low the media hyped a high death rate. And now that testing has drastically increased, they are hyping a surge of Covid cases.

However to date, more people died of the flu in 2018 than have died of Covid.

They’re playing a shell game with statistics.

We’re being conned.

Sancho Panza June 30, 2020 - 12:40 PM - 12:40 PM

@Reason
Please cite your source, there’s much ambiguity to how these tests are counted. Dr.Farnitano said at an Ad Hoc committee meeting that there is a small group of positives counted more than once for a single person. We deserve to know how all cases tallied—tests, positives, hospitalizations and death IN Contra Costa County are calculated…mandates are driven by this data.

LL Cool J June 30, 2020 - 12:58 PM - 12:58 PM

@ Reason. You are wrong. They are counting tests. Even the people administering the tests are admitting. That is why I stated what I stated.

Turn off your mainstream news shows. Stop reading SFgate.

Reason June 30, 2020 - 3:17 PM - 3:17 PM

There are different kinds of COVID-19 statistics and you are conflating them. Number of confirmed cases is different than number of tests. Number of positive tests is different than number of confirmed cases. Each time a person is tested for COVID-19, the test is included in the total number of tests given. If a person is tested 7 times and 4 tests are positive and 3 are negative, the total number of tests administered would be 7; the total number of positive tests would be 4; and the total number of confirmed cases would be 1. Multiple positive tests from the same person does not result in more confirmed cases. This is basic epidemiology. Stop making it political.

@LL Cool J

I don’t get my enws from tv. I don’t read SF Gage.

Sancho Panza June 30, 2020 - 5:32 PM - 5:32 PM

@Reason~Again, please cite your source. If you watch the 6/18 Ad Hoc Committee on Covid-19 Dr. Farnitano states this and is in the minutes:

He clarified that the test data reports the number of tests completed not the number of people tested, but the number of people who have been tested multiple times is small and also the number of repeat positive tests is small. People in high contact jobs should test at least monthly.

Tugboat June 30, 2020 - 10:37 AM - 10:37 AM

Just like mail in voting, this smells.

Ricardoh June 30, 2020 - 10:39 AM - 10:39 AM

I have been warning about viruses coming out of China and sure enough they have yet another, this one from pigs. We need to put the old rice curtain back around that country before they kill all of us. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

eyeseeyou June 30, 2020 - 11:04 AM - 11:04 AM

This is offensive. I eat rice daily and am not from China. Why you gotta mention rice? So hypothetically, we put a “curtain” around China. A few weeks from now, you better not be complaining that the cost of everything goes up, because we have been importing so many products from China at a very low cost/unit. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

To Do List June 30, 2020 - 11:38 AM - 11:38 AM

eyeseeyou: I look at this a very different way than you do. The cost of business with China is very high. Most economists blame that trade for the destruction of the US middle class due to exporting our manufacturing jobs. That is a cost. The increased interaction with China due to this trade hastened the spread of Coronavirus here. That is a cost. The interaction led to massive intellectual theft and spying on everything from corporate products to defense systems. That is a cost. Their products are low quality. When I buy a measuring cup made in China, after a few dishwasher runs all of the markings fade off I have a glass cup of no value. People warn others not to replace old appliances now because they are so badly made in China. That is a cost. The products from China you cheer on have been wildly expensive in terms of the damage to the US. It would not be unreasonable to blame the current riots/unrest/vandalism on China.

LL Cool J June 30, 2020 - 1:01 PM - 1:01 PM

Viruses don’t just jump from animal to human. They need to be coaxed and trained in petri dish first to recognize human cells and attack them. This is per the scientists that work on them. Human interference must occur first.

So, then, these viruses are being released from labs. Where and why is the question. There are a lot of opinions, for sure.

The Professor June 30, 2020 - 2:17 PM - 2:17 PM

@Ricardoh-

Swine flu is nothing to sneeze at. This one appears to be a mutation of H1N1 (which caused the 1918 pandemic).
China really needs to clean up it’s act, but at least they’re letting the world know before it gets out.

@ Eyeseeyou-

“Rice curtain” is a metaphor. Kind of like “Iron Curtain”. I really hope that your outrage is not real, otherwise you just look ridiculous.

@ LL

Ummmm, no. Viruses mutate within a host. When the “right” mutated virus comes into contact with the “right” host, then you get inter-species transfer. While not common, it does happen with some regularity.

eyeseeyou June 30, 2020 - 2:59 PM - 2:59 PM

@To Do List: I totally understand what you’re saying and my perspective was meant more from a personal/individual level. For example, when I go grocery shopping and see products from Asia vs. U.S., there is a stark difference in price per unit. It is true that products from abroad can be of lower quality, but as a shopper, sometimes that lower quality is worth the lower cost for individuals in the short term.

Ricardoh June 30, 2020 - 7:56 PM - 7:56 PM

The Professor I am very outraged and if anyone had a brain they would be also. Until China cleans up its act it should be ostracized. The next time they could wipe us out like the dinosaurs. I really don’t care about cheap stuff from them. It is not worth it. Don’t write back and tell me the dinosaurs didn’t die out from a virus.

It’s is surprising how history is forgotten and not researched widely

It is evident that China has been making moves for over 10 years to solidify its Take over of strategic targets

The United States has been their main focus
The only thing stopping them is our military
The China campaign to infiltrate and consume from within is ramping up
They control sports here and democrat politicians
Trade and medications
Economy
Elected officials
The WHO AND CDC

So they are implementing their strategy of systematically infecting us to not only weaken and destroy moral but also create the division narrative as we are seeing with just this virus ….as the infectious diseases coming out of that country to infect the world leaves no other reason as to rid the world of most so they can easily take over

Since their country has the most population

They are playing the numbers game

They can not take us out with military moves even with Russia help

So they are infecting the world with designed outbreaks to weaken it and divide the populous with anarchy

It’s allready in process and the democrats are giving us up to the wolves to save their families

Just look at the broad strokes of what’s happening
As well as who is the best and has the most hackers trying to penetrate governments

The war is upon us

And we are being handed over to them on a democrat socialist platter
Or rather we are being re educated to make the transition of the survivors faster

It’s been fun having freedom
And the liberals gave us up in just 50’years
