Gov.Newsom Says Contra Costa County Bars Should Remain Closed

by CLAYCORD.com

The California Department of Public Health, along with Gov. Gavin Newsom, said on Sunday that Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties should continue to keep indoor bars closed, in light of escalating COVID-19 infections.

Those two counties were mentioned in a press release that described mandatory closures for bars in Los Angeles, Fresno, Kern, Kings and Tulare Counties, and recommended closures of bars in Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Stanislaus and Ventura Counties.

“COVID-19 is still circulating in California, and in some parts of the state, growing stronger,” Newsom said in the statement “That’s why it is critical we take this step to limit the spread of the virus in the counties
that are seeing the biggest increases.”

Duh – who the hell would open a bar in the middle of a pandemic.

Ilovepopcorn June 29, 2020 - 9:13 AM - 9:13 AM

Younger folks are the ones getting the virus because the bars are where they show up more than older folks. Wake up and please stop blaming the government for closing down for no reason. Sick of the arrogant ignorant people. Thank goodness the smart people are in charge.

Wake up and quit sucking up to the governor

Gittyup June 29, 2020 - 10:53 AM - 10:53 AM

@popcorn When the government cuts your Social Security because they’re broke, we’ll see who is arrogant and ignorant.

rings4me June 29, 2020 - 11:04 AM - 11:04 AM

@ lovepopcorn You mean to tell me that the THOUSANDS of “youths” that were so VERY busy protesting (aka rioting?) were NOT part of those now testing positive. Wow, just guzzle that News-Koolaid. Here we are two weeks after all these unlawful (Over 100 people) gatherings. And now even longer shut down. I bet you are sure glad you are either Rich or collecting EDD. I know over 20 people about to lose their home, their businesses, Lose their jobs- Forever. PHT🤐

Cowellian June 29, 2020 - 8:42 AM - 8:42 AM

I assume that Newsom no longer needs to operate a bar in Contra Costa County to earn an honest living.

And what back-up plan do you have, Gavin, for when schools are open, students aren’t wearing masks properly or at all, teachers and other staff will likely contract the virus, then what?

S June 29, 2020 - 9:11 AM - 9:11 AM

Sadly, you are probably correct that school employees will get sick at work. It may be unavoidable.

I think the perks of public employees are beyond generous, but in this case school employees who are confirmed infected from work should not have to use their own sick leave; some type of paid industrial injury time off might be appropriate. As well as other people who are in necessary job functions. Yep, it would cost the taxpayer more; therefore my conflict… No New Taxes… ARGHHhhhhhh…

Ilovepopcorn June 29, 2020 - 9:17 AM - 9:17 AM

They are working on a plan now. Stop blaming the schools and the ones trying to solve the problems. Give it a rest. You folks are snarling coyotes waiting to pounce on the people in charge. What are you doing to help! Are you following the mandates? Hope so.

Oh, please June 29, 2020 - 9:49 AM - 9:49 AM

So? What about all the other people who go to work? Why are school employees different than everyone else? Do doctors get to decide not to come into work, yet still get a full paycheck? Schools need to get on it and get their employees in there. Wear a mask and they will be fi e.

Newsom's Monica June 29, 2020 - 10:01 AM - 10:01 AM

You give it a rest, Popcorn

The Fat Cat June 30, 2020 - 8:48 AM - 8:48 AM

@ S

There are definitely no easy solutions surrounding schools, and the paid industrial time off idea does seem appropriate, although likely one small piece of an overall solution.

I take pause at your weighing of taxpayer costs vs the health of teachers and students in your community. Obviously there is not infinite money to rectify the problems of returning students to the classroom. And, I think we can all agree that these are extraordinary times that call for extraordinary measures. As such, I hope that we can also reach a common ground that justifying half-measures to protect educators and students for fear of violating the tenet of “No New Taxes” is crass at best, and dangerous to the health and livelihood of others at worst.

The Fearless Spectator June 29, 2020 - 8:59 AM - 8:59 AM

That may be true, and we need to be careful. But really, who cares what Governor Newsom says anymore?

Zero credibility.

Ricardoh June 29, 2020 - 9:23 AM - 9:23 AM

Through it all remember this is the Chinese virus. The decisions made in the US are not easy. I know Newsom is not that swift but everyone is playing everything by ear. Wear a mask and don’t crowd.

WC Resident June 29, 2020 - 10:00 AM - 10:00 AM

How do you eat and drink while wearing a mask?

Gittyup June 29, 2020 - 10:49 AM - 10:49 AM

@WC Resident With a (plastic) straw stuck up from below the lower edge?

parent June 29, 2020 - 9:45 AM - 9:45 AM

So Newscum says to close bars.

How bout we close out his ‘reign of terror’ on the population of California? He has misled this whole event, so has Trump. He has provided no real guidance, though there are many sheep that just follow his every word (follow the mandates!). Spends money on masks that are not delivered. Offers to sell California surplus supplies to other states. Takes in patients from other countries, allows moves of patients from one county to another county, wants to free the criminals because they are sick …. Why would anyone want to follow this fool? Or listen to what he has to say? He is obviously following a political line and not a scientific line because he set standards that have now since changed. As a LEADER he should be making efforts to address the population of the state and not just is devout little followers.

BernieM June 29, 2020 - 10:09 AM - 10:09 AM

Wear your mask in public. Stay 6 feet apart. Wash your hands. Avoid large crowds. Don’t go out when you’re sick. If we had ALL done this over the past few months, we’d be in a lot better spot right now.
It’s not that difficult.
I trust that the people of Claycord can do ALL of this going forward. Thanks in advance for being responsible 👍
It’s the gatherings, parties, indoor activities causing the spike. Cut that out and we can have a somewhat “normal” existence until a safe vaccine is available.

L0L June 29, 2020 - 10:11 AM - 10:11 AM

So how are the death rates? That is what we should be paying attention too, not the cases.

The vast majority of deaths are coming from elderly with underlying conditions. Diabetes and obesity are huge factors as there are much more elderly without underlying conditions that are beating the virus

Young people NEED to contract the virus to build immunity to it so as we get older it’s not a threat to us in our older age or society at large. Our immune system is extremely old and has been doing this for a very long time. We need to let it do it’s job and fight this kind of a virus on its own since it is entirely capable. Then we will have herd immunity and can move on.

Even a vaccine isn’t 100% effective. This isn’t the first illness that’s ever been around. We cannot run from the virus, it will only prolong how we deal with it if we keep our immune systems away from it. Those that are vulnerable must have a close watch kept on them as there has been some very strong success using zinc and other drugs in early infection with the vulnerable elderly increasing their survival rate drastically, but the rest of us NEED to keep our immune systems strong not just from coronavirus but other viruses as well. Let’s not forget there isn’t only 1 virus out there right now, hiding away does nothing but make you weaker in the long run.

Ricardus June 29, 2020 - 10:11 AM - 10:11 AM

Sadly, people are not taking this virus seriously. While it is not as deadly as predicted, it can seriously cause life-time health issues. Going to bars and socializing indoors is just not smart since you are likely to spend a lot more time in one place.

Moreover, when there is an air flow inside, in other words, air conditioning, the chance of catching the virus increases exponentially. There was a study where a family from Wuhan went to a restaurant near Hong Kong. One person had the virus and spread it to people in the same table to people at a table two tables away about 14 feet from the infected. Conversely, a table seated next to the table did not get the virus. The culprit? An air conditioner vent.

Funny how people in their 20’s and 30’s are suddenly showing up infected with Xi Coronavirus after the protests, rioting and looting. I’m sure no connection will ever be looked for by our state or county health ‘officials’.

Ricardus June 29, 2020 - 11:25 AM - 11:25 AM

I agree for sure that the young people have caused the spread. Now if one of those infected go into a bar… I think that is what the concern is about.

Yves Harlowe June 29, 2020 - 10:48 AM - 10:48 AM

The county Health Department, as expected, has changed the opening timeline. Businesses that were going to open July 1, now will not open until the numbers stabilize. I really feel for people who rely on those businesses to make a living, whether they are the owners or employees.

With all the geniuses on Claycord I’m surprised we haven’t cured this thing…

BernieM June 29, 2020 - 12:04 PM - 12:04 PM

Yes, given all the expertise and passion, we should have dozens of viable candidates on the ballots in 2022.

chuckie the troll June 29, 2020 - 10:53 AM - 10:53 AM

How about an outdoor bar, that protests by not having a license or paying taxes? And ‘protesters’ can make their voices heard by having a drink. It would make people happy and keep money out of Democrat hands, a win-win situation.

SF oh June 29, 2020 - 11:46 AM - 11:46 AM

Aargh!!! Stop blaming everyone else besides the protestors! Ok fine – maybe young people got a bit complacent and were going out and socializing. But they weren’t out in bars, by the thousands, EVERY NIGHT for a month. It was the protestors who caused this spike. It wasn’t the average young person – it wasn’t Mother’s Day brunch – it wasn’t Memorial Day picnics. It was the protests! This fool is a shameless, political hack.

Ed Spigowski June 29, 2020 - 10:17 PM - 10:17 PM

I work for the federal government and have workef for 2 different agencies during the pandemic, one was the VA in Martinez doing patient care. Zero employees tested positive for the virus at the VA during my time there, the department I work now we are not required to wear mask because its on federal land….there have been zero cases there…open things up, send kids back to school, and do your part….society can’t remain indoors until no one gets sick or no one dies ever again
