This year’s Walnut Creek Memorial Day ceremony will be a “virtual” event, coming to a screen near you at 11 a.m. Monday.
The hour-long event will begin with remarks from Walnut Creek Mayor Loella Haskew and the four other members of the City Council. The Rev. Krista Gregoso of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will provide a special invocation and blessing for the day, and highlights of performances by the Walnut Creek Concert Band will comprise the bulk of the program.
“The shelter at home order and distancing requirements made us re-imagine this year’s ceremony,” Haskew said in a statement. “It is no less important that during this time, we pause to honor our service members who sacrificed their lives serving our country.”
Walnut Creek has hosted an annual Memorial Day ceremony for more than 30 years.
The hour-long event will be broadcast at 11 a.m. Monday on Walnut Creek TV, on the city’s YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/CityofWalnutCreek),and on the city website (www.walnut-creek.org/departments/communications-outreach/walnut-creek-tv). Walnut Creek residents can find WCTV on Channel 99 for AT&T U-Verse customers, Channel 29 for WAVE customers, and Channel 28 for Comcast customers (Channel 26 in Rossmoor.)

Thank You City of Walnut Creek.
I’m not a resident of your city but thank you for taking the time to honor our war dead. I believe we have the freedom to take this holiday for granted just because so many did give their lives. My Dad was a Marine until the day he died at 82. He had the patience, discipline and values that we don’t see too much of anymore at all levels. Ironically we don’t even have to give Memorial Day a thought because we have that foundation of freedom.

My Dad was Air Force. He died when he was 75.
They don’t make them like they used to.
We don’t have to give freedom a thought? Oh yes we do, once we stop to thinking about it and fighting for it, that foundation is gone. We have the right to take Memorial Day for granted because so many gave their lives? Yes we have the “freedom” to take it for granted, but wow, what a kick in the face to those served.

My point is that so many do take that freedom for granted.
Also, nowhere did I say we have the right to take Memorial Day for granted. People ARE taking it for granted and sadly don’t give it a thought.
Hopefully our discussion will give others a chance to take pause and give it a thought.
