Nine in the hospital in a county of 1.15 million people. Great news. CC Health, suicides are up, and isolation isn’t healthy – for kids or adults. Give us some risk-mitigation guidelines and stop pretending that shelter-in-place can go on indefinitely. How about this? Cap gatherings at 25 (with excptions if people can be spaced out and ventilation and air space allow), encourage outdoor activities over indoor, set indoor density limits at some percentage of a building’s capacity (so that larger buildings can have more than tiny ones – what a concept), require masks in indoor public areas, transit, and shared work spaces, give businesses guidance on ventilation best practices. The curve is smashed and we aren’t going to get it any flatter, in any realistic scenario. We aren’t going to get to zero cases, so give us guidelines to live with this and mitigate risk. Zero risk is not an appropriate standard!

I can’t see any good reason not to do everything you just listed. That’s what’s really concerning me at this point. It seems like just about anything could happen and they are not going to let go of this. It is also extremely concerning to me that any mitigating information is quickly squashed and other negative information is taken out of perspective. There have been a fair amount of respected epidemiologists/experts (at least prior to this) trying to point out concerns they have about the lockdowns, there have been studies indicating it is not anywhere near as lethal as originally thought and all of the people with the original doomsday models have been off by huge orders of magnitude again and again. And those people took the lockdown into account with their models. None of this means it isn’t a problem. It is clearly somewhat more virulent than what we normally deal with. But they are purposely ignoring any mitigating information and proceeding forward with the original doomsday plan. It’s causing far more damage at this point and I can’t imagine what legitimate excuse there could be for not taking the common sense steps you just listed. They claim to be listening to experts, but it appears they are picking and choosing what experts and science to listen to. When the head of a major trauma department, in the Bay Area of all places, is turning to the news trying to sound the alarm, it’s time to start listening and adjust. People in academia often don’t have a lot of real world common sense to make balanced decisions.

Thanks for your post Led, TD. It appears the powers that be have reached a point of NO return.

No one follows the guidelines. They call any guidelines tyranny. And now El Trumpistador is calling for churches to re-open – say hello to a brand new wave, bigger than the first wave.

Idiots always ruin things for the good people. “Do the Right Thing”, my eyeball.

Just Me May 22, 2020 - 12:59 PM - 12:59 PM

It should not make a difference if we are at Costco, Safeway or any other “essential business”, give people the opportunity to make things safe and they will, if you do not feel safe then do not go there. In my opinion Churches and other places of business should be given that opportunity. We can not keep this up, the cure can not be worse than the disease

Lazy One May 22, 2020 - 1:02 PM - 1:02 PM

Sitting in a church wearing a mask with 1 or 2 people per pew. Or, share the pew with your own household. You are right. That sounds real dangerous. It is so much safer going to Walmart with crowds of people going every which way. If you don’t want to go to church, don’t go.

parent May 22, 2020 - 3:46 PM - 3:46 PM

Yes LadyMom, there will be a new wave. If you have locked yourself for the last 10 weeks then your immune system is no WHERE as strong as it once was. You WILL get sick!

Do the right thing is quit hiding under your bed. Get outside! Mingle with people. The vaccine is NOT here and will NOT be here in the near future. If you WANT to hide, then do so. I want to go to church and fellowship with fellow believers. I want to sit in a pew with my family and friends around me. Some of the churches are big enough that we can safely do this.

You should be more concerned at Walmart, Costco, etc with all the crowding I see there.

These guidelines are an attempt at tyranny. They are attempt to control you. If you want to be controlled, go to Russia or China, GET OUT OF the USA!

@LadyMom,

If no one is following the guidelines and we have only nine people in the hospital with Covid-19, that would suggest that we don’t need guidelines…

In fact people generally are following the guidelines, at least most people most of the time. But you are on the right track in this way: the longer this goes on the less people will obey it.

Cowellian May 23, 2020 - 9:41 AM - 9:41 AM

Trump didn’t have to order the churches to re-open. The 1st Amendment already did that. He is just reminding all the Governors who do not understand that the Bill of Rights is a limit on government, not the citizens.

Your mental illness is your problem. The constitution will be followed.

Strad May 22, 2020 - 3:11 PM - 3:11 PM

But certainty isn’t even the true goal of the six-foot rule. “[The CDC] is not saying, ‘If you’re six feet apart then you won’t get sick,’” says Baseman. “Because there’s not actually evidence that that’s true.”

Me. May 22, 2020 - 11:52 PM - 11:52 PM

You guys shouldn’t be so rude to people who have a different view than you. Ladymom has every right to say how she feels without being attacked by your words. I agree with her. Shes not hiding under her bed, but doing her part like we all should be doing anyway. Social distancing to help our community friends and families stay healthy. Lets all just do our part and stop arguing! Jeeze.

Not Me May 23, 2020 - 7:48 AM - 7:48 AM

According to Me, people who agree with her have a right to say how they feel, but not people who disagree with her.
How rude!

Jimmy May 23, 2020 - 12:39 AM - 12:39 AM

Looks to me like LadyMom is the one doing the name calling (Trumpisadore and idiots).
Everyone else is just disagreeing with her.
I disagree too. Trump is correct in saying open the churches. People would be sitting orderly for the most part with masks on. As others have said, much better than roaming Walmart or Costco, grabbing items and opening freezer doors.
We’re not going to eliminate this virus so we better learn to live with it and fast. The food lines are going to get long in about 6 months.

Kauai Mike May 23, 2020 - 7:00 AM - 7:00 AM

as of 05/22:

1,259 confirmed cases (CCC) with 36 deaths = 2.86% death rate.

If we could step aside from the right wing shilling for a moment, it does seem clear by that we have been on an uptick in cases lately.

Lizzee May 23, 2020 - 9:10 AM - 9:10 AM

Testing has also more than doubled recently. The last week or so, they’ve been posting 1000+ tests per day vs. approx 500. The cases seem roughly proportionate.

To Do List May 23, 2020 - 9:32 AM - 9:32 AM

Bill Bob Which is a more accurate number, the uptick in reported cases or the fall in the number of hospitalizations? As to the right wing shilling as you call it, you might consider it a wake up call that we cannot trust any numbers right now. Many are just trying to sell viewpoints. Politicians are lying to us. The technocrats like Fauci have the same track record as the brilliant PhD’s at the Federal Reserve and banks who helped bring us the 2008 financial crisis. With a bit of Googling, you can find statisticians and professors saying the CDC numbers are not reported correctly. I could go on for pages, but I just want to point out that none of these numbers are really trustworthy and that has nothing to do with any stand on going to the beach or not.

FeistySr May 23, 2020 - 8:41 AM - 8:41 AM

So one of the guidelines to prevent Covid19 from spreading is for everyone to wear masks WHEN they are in retail businesses or enclosed areas so if they carry the virus they won’t spread it. Ok…so this should work the other way around also…if somebody has the virus and is wearing a mask and you also are wearing a mask then most likely you will not get the virus…that being said, time to resume some sort of normalcy, this lockdown is not healthy for anyone. Adults need to be adults and do what is best for them. Those who are most affected are children, Those not of school age are missing out on social interaction, not learning how to be part of a community. We are pushing all our children into sterile environments with more time spent on computers, electronic interaction and TV which the medical world has been preaching is the worst thing to do yet that is exaclty what we are allowing to be done. Yes, they can do puzzles, read, color, paint etc but they need to be out in nature to enjoy hearing the birds, feel the warm sun or the rain falling on them, see animals, other peoplem they need to be able to run and play and scream with delight with others their age. Wake up!
Assuming a vaccination is developed, will you want to be vaccinated right away? What are the long term effects? We will not know until we are hit with them. Remember, the yearly flu vaccine only protects against some of the flu viruses. There already are several Covid19 variances in the USA which have been identified so will the vaccine protect against all or will it be like the yearly flu shot which protects against one type….
Bottom line – do what is best for you and take precautions which are best for you and don’t demand others follow.
I am 61 years old, not in perfect health, wear a face mask (one with “filters” my friend made) to stores etc, wash my face mask after every use. Wash my hands when I return home after going to a retail business (once a week),I have been seeing and visiting my children and grandchildren from day 1 but enough is enough. Time to return to some sort of normalcy!!!

Led May 23, 2020 - 9:21 AM - 9:21 AM

Where do I sign up to get paid? Silly me, I’ve just been following data and experts for free!

Ok, seriously… The seven day average of new cases is modestly higher in the last few days, but you have to take into account that we have had more tests done as well. If you test more widely, you’ll identify more cases. That’s a good thing, not a bad thing. So is this uptick due to more spread of the disease or more testing, or some of both? More analysis needed, but you can look at the testing numbers by day on the county website, and it shows the seven day rolling average of the positivity rate. (Good job, CC Health! Credit where credit is due. Now how about some data on PPE benchmarks and contact tracing benchmarks?)

We are at about the same positivity rate as on May 11. Possibly it’s going up right now but that’s not at all clear from the data. Still below 3% positivity out of people who are tested. That’s very low, even if it is higher than some days when it has been under 2%.
