UPDATE: Man Faces Charges Of Being A Felon In Possession Of A Firearm, Firing Gun, Leading Police On Chase

A 31-year-old man arrested after allegedly firing a gun in a Concord backyard has been charged with negligent discharge of a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and resisting arrest, Concord police said.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office on Friday filed the charges against Kentreal Julius Irving, who had recent addresses in Richmond and Sacramento. Irving remained in the Martinez Detention Facility Saturday night in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Concord police were called Tuesday to the 3500 block of Concord Boulevard, near Farm Bureau Road, on reports of someone discharging a firearm in a back yard. When officers arrived, the man later identified as Irving fled by jumping neighborhood fences.

After a 49-minute, 1.6-mile pursuit, police arrested Irving near Chestnut Avenue and Emma Court, police said.

Officers found a loaded gun and several shell casings near where they first spotted Irving, police said.

So in other words, He’ll be out tonight

RANDOM TASK May 3, 2020 - 3:21 PM - 3:21 PM

Wait for it

Yes the district attorney will plead down the charges
and release him
With apologies Of course for inconvenience and causing him to jump fences and endanger the public as he fled pursuit.

Also giving him free tickets to a warriors game

And new nike shoes

Remember giving criminals what ever they want reduces crime right

So open your doors and minds to prop 47

And the da agenda of being light on crime
and allowing the non criminals to be preyed upon and laughed at …..
for being good citizens obeying the laws

Must be nice to pay taxes and obey the laws while the politics and judges and district attorneys are all endorsing crime and criminals and making YOU pay for it

Enjoy lol

You wanted this

And voted for it

How Dare they threaten his life by putting him in jail, he needs to be released immediately so that he doesn’t catch COVID-19

Poor guy, with the gun ranges closed, where is a man go to pop off a few rounds.

Chicken Little May 3, 2020 - 3:33 PM - 3:33 PM

Whoever he stole that gun from is going to be happy to get it back. Those things are expensive.

Sick of it May 3, 2020 - 8:46 PM - 8:46 PM

Sad thing is that the person it was stolen from is probably in bigger trouble than him for having a gun stored in there own home where some one like him could actually steal it from. The lefts logic at work

That gun has the capability to penetrate body armor. Not a good thing for law enforcement. Look Him Up !

Penetrate body armor huh? Can you tell us what make and model of the firearm was? Can you tell us what type of ammo was being used? Was it ball ammo, frangible, steel core? Are you aware there are many different levels of tacyical vests available? They are rated to different kinds of gunfire as well as other penetrating injuries. Please stop spreading false info on things that you know nothing about.

S May 4, 2020 - 7:46 PM - 7:46 PM

A C, Why the burr up your butt? Wizzy’s statement is correct. This is where one would ask if you actually read the article, but in this case did you actually look at the picture? Yes, that weapon has the capability to… and yes, the capable ammo can be bought on the streets…

pew pew… your comments below are just a bad.

for you two this only proves the old saying: the more you learn the less you know.

The Wizard May 5, 2020 - 6:29 AM - 6:29 AM

American Citizen, Look at the picture and do some research. It’s not to hard to do these days.

Great job CPD

Concerned May 3, 2020 - 6:57 PM - 6:57 PM

Some of yall are pathetic. People have mental health issues, and some are experiencing higher stresses while sheltering in place. We need to prioritize mental healthcare along with physical healthcare to help people not do dangerous crap like this. If we can provide help for poverty and mental health then most crimes will stop happening.

Sick of it May 3, 2020 - 8:48 PM - 8:48 PM

Oh my god Concerned get a clue. He was a felon in possession of a gun. His mental problem is he is a low life and the left has enabled him with there go lightly on crime agenda.

Original G May 3, 2020 - 10:40 PM - 10:40 PM

Deterrence of crime thru threat of incarceration.
For those who don’t recall three strikes law passed in 1994, 5,906,268 71.85% in favor and no vote was 2,314,548 28.15%.

An here we are in 2020 in liberal CA, where a criminal really has to work hard to be charged with a Felony.
A state where county jails are little more than revolving doors for misdemeanor property criminals. Ya know, the ones breaking into vehicles, businesses and residences.

IF there is little downside for criminals being predacious upon society, don’t be surprised if crime increases.

Oh what the heck give ’em all participation trophies, that’ll give ’em empathy for their victims.

American Citizen May 4, 2020 - 7:14 PM - 7:14 PM

A felon in possession of a firearm should be considered a high value target. That is all it should be considered to law enforcement.

Cellophane May 3, 2020 - 3:40 PM - 3:40 PM

I’m surprised that he’s still in jail.

Usually, the DA lets these guys go free.

Irving really didn’t hurt anyone.

But I’m glad to hear he’s in jail for now.

I hope he stays there for a long long time.

BOOYAH! May 3, 2020 - 3:47 PM - 3:47 PM

Dr. J!!!

Anon May 3, 2020 - 3:52 PM - 3:52 PM

That’s a 5.7 pistol. Glad to hear and see that no Officers were shot during this incident. 9 times out of 10, that 5.7 round WILL go through body armor. I call it the “baby AK round”.

PewPewPew May 4, 2020 - 9:09 AM - 9:09 AM

Virtually all firearms are capable of defeating body Armour, especially with modern / defensive loadings.

The 5.7 cartridge is virtually worthless in a semi-auto format anyway. It was designed specifically for select fire platforms, for a very niche Personal Defense Weapon.

Street 5.7 ammo is NOT AP. It is extremely hard to obtain AP rated 5.7 ammo, legally or otherwise.

American Citizen May 4, 2020 - 6:36 PM - 6:36 PM

That’s not necessarily true. There are many different sorts of tactical vests that are rated for different sort of ballistics. It all depends on the type of vest worn and the type of plating that you have inside the vest. I’ve never seen a quality vest that couldn’t stop most ammo from handguns. Rifle ballistics is a different story. The amount of velocity that rifles produce create far more likelihood of penetration of certain vests. This is the exact reason why steel core 5.45 * 39 ammo is no longer legal for import. It was rifle ammo for a long time and then someone developed a handgun to use it in. Not all firearms can defeat body armor.

The Wizard May 5, 2020 - 6:44 AM - 6:44 AM

American Citizen, Next time before you engage the key board. Find out about the model of the gun, It’s a hand gun that shots a very high velocity round. One of these days I wish I can know as much as you about guns. Do you write Books on the subject mater?

Original G May 3, 2020 - 3:56 PM - 3:56 PM

The bail seems pretty low for a felon in possession of a firearm. He was probably just about to turn his life around. I think they were profiling.

FN Five Seven. Oddly expensive gun for a felon

S May 3, 2020 - 6:20 PM - 6:20 PM

usually market only to military and police…

My guess is he followed ALL the gun laws and purchased it by the book.

Wouldn’t you agree?????

Jan Smuts May 3, 2020 - 8:42 PM - 8:42 PM

Oh most certainly! He followed our stringent gun laws to the very end!

1791 May 4, 2020 - 9:01 AM - 9:01 AM

Anti gunners are finding out just how hard it is to legally purchase the tools to defend your family from trash like this. That’s a good thing.

American Citizen May 4, 2020 - 7:16 PM - 7:16 PM

Most felons don’t buy guns at gun stores. The 5.7 is actively marketed toward competitive shooters and other freedom-loving citizens. Maybe now the liberals can see that they have made it more and more difficult for true Patriots to acquire the tools they need to protect themselves. Especially now that the liberals have voted crime to become legal.

Martinezmike May 3, 2020 - 5:54 PM - 5:54 PM

Doesn’t sound like he was in possession of the gun when he was arrested. If he was allegedly firing it, why wasn’t he allegedly in possession of it?

Chicken Little May 3, 2020 - 6:36 PM - 6:36 PM

Because he allegedly dumped it and ran when he saw the cops.

Diana Becton is the worst DA in Contra Costa County history. She was backed by George Soros. She rules from her Ivory Tower and let’s criminals run through the cities causing havoc and mayhem. When criminals are arrested. She pleads them down or releases them for “lack of evidence”. Normally when you are arrested the police have pretty good evidence. She has handcuffed police from doing their jobs. She has given criminals a free reign of terror on law abiding citizens. Her and her band of idiots are part of the corruption that is ruining CC County. We need Diana Becton removed immediately.

How do you explain releasing two individuals who kicked in a door with occupants home and then attempted to run over the homeowner with a car. Sure sounds like assault with a deadly weapon to me. Or have you also not heard of the opioid medication running rampant being thrown at anyone who will buy it from a doctor

I am sorry your ill informed about how this state is run and or maybe your on the democrat system and are forced to repeat their agenda laden sleek about how we need to do what needs to be done
Even though the so called elected officials are supposed to handle the cities problems
Anyone care to explain what the dem politicians are doing for the city

They seem to be telling us to deal with crime and bums and mental challenged

Atticus Thraxx May 5, 2020 - 2:08 PM - 2:08 PM

I’m not addressing this to anyone specifically but there seems to be some confusion about the 5.7 x 28 cartridge and it’s ballistic performance. No, I haven’t written a book about it, but read most of them. The 5.7 was introduced as a replacement for the 9×19 Parabellum. NATO didn’t end up adopting it but it is widely used in Europe. The cartridge was centered around the P90 PDW and the FN Five 7 pistol. Three key areas of ballistic performance:

Velocity: The 5.7 is a 31 +/- grain projectile at aproximateLy 2000 to 2200 feet per second. The 9 mm(9×19 – 9 mm Parabellum – etc) is a 115 grain or 124 grain at 1100 to 1200 feet per second. So the 9mm is four times as heavy and half as fast. Are you willing to give up bullet weight for velocity? Not me. Winner 5.7 x 28 with an asterix

Muzzle Energy: The Corbon 115 gr JHP delivers 466 foot pounds of energy from a 4″ barrel. The 5.7x28mm drives a 32 grain bullet, load #SS190-AP (armor piercing), at a muzzle velocity of 2350 fps with 390 ft. lbs. of muzzle energy, but that’s only from the 10 ” barrel P90, not the FN pistol! (an effective range of 50 m and a max range of 1,510 m when fired from the Five-seven) Winner–9 X 19 Parabellum

Penetration: In 1999, the RCMP Forensics Laboratory ran comparative testing of the 5.7x28SS190 against body armor at 3 and 25 meters using calibrated 10% ordnance gelatin.
Additionally, in the Spring 2000 edition of the Journal of the International Wound Ballistics Association this report was published in its entirety along with data that supported the assessment that “the wound capability of the 5.7×28 SS190 is approximately 40 percent that of a 9mm 124 grain FMJ fired from a Glock 19, with appreciably smaller wound size, penetration depth, wound channel diameter and soft tissue volume displacement”.
Winner: 9 x 19 Parabellum

So if you’re old like me and remeber the .22 Remington Jet cartridge which you could shoot out of a S&W 53 revolver, the 5.7 is similar balistically to that. Fast but not all that fearsome and the advantages don’t outweigh the disadvantages. And the scary numbers all come out of the P90 anyway. Which even if you could find, they start at $1500. And 5.7 x 28 starts @ .40 a round and goes up over $1 a round.
I’ve already posted about body armor levels and penetration. I’ll try and find that instead of typing it all again.

WC Resident May 5, 2020 - 4:25 PM - 4:25 PM

Thank you Atticus. The amount of thought and opinion that goes into the design of firearms and ammunition has always interested me.

1791 May 5, 2020 - 6:03 PM - 6:03 PM

Attucus,

So to answer your question…would I rather get shot with the 5.7 or the 9mm? The 5.7 of course.

Only know a few people who own these, not very popular or useful. Like any firearm, they are fun to shoot but…

Ruger felt there was enough of a market for the cartridge to put out a new pistol recently. I’m betting they don’t make enough money off it to continue long term production.

Atticus Thraxx May 5, 2020 - 6:56 PM - 6:56 PM

My pleasure WC. I often think to myself maybe least interesting thing about military firearms for a hobby is shooting them. Until I get to the firing line anyway. I have a 104 year old Swedish military rifle (Mod 96) that shoots an odd caliber(6.5 x 55 ) and I have had more fun developing loads for it to squeak out that last sliver of MOA, than a line full of guys going full auto with their ARs are having. Now it shoots tea cup sized groups at 100 yards and dinner plate sized a 500 yards. From a 104 year old beater rifle I paid maybe $200 for! 😎
