Death rate – .000019% In Contra Costa County

Closing Ca. for another month is suicide.

The cure is officially worse than the disease.

MathMatters April 30, 2020 - 3:00 PM - 3:00 PM

if 27 is .000019% of the population of Contra Costa Country
then the population of Contra Costa is
142,105, 263 people.
142 million plus.

You really don’t seem to understand what per cent means.

I’m sure you are going to tell me that
1.4 million X .000019 = 27 and yes that is true
but that does not mean that 27 is .000019% of 1.4 million
it means 27 is .0019% of 1.4 million.

Iola April 30, 2020 - 3:22 PM - 3:22 PM

27/1,153,526= .00002341
You have to multiply that by 100 in order to find the %, you don’t just divide
So the death rate is .0023%

Check your math – there are 13 more cases than yesterday – not 29.

WC Resident April 30, 2020 - 4:30 PM - 4:30 PM

@Superstitious – Yesterday the county added 16 new cases to the system by adjusting the numbers for previous days, going as far back as to adjust 3/12/2020 from 10 cases to 11. Add those plus the 13 more cases for 4/29/2020 and you’ll see how the total number reported by the county went up by 29 compared to what what the county reported yesterday.

FWIW, 4/3/2020 was adjusted from 51 to 53 cases. That day was when the outbreaks in an assisted living facility were confirmed. It resulted in a one day spike in the numbers.

I sure wish the county would explain why they make these adjustments. Are the COVID-19 tests so inaccurate that they are wrong 10% of the time?

Wow…27 people in the hospital with coronavirus. I’ll bet our hospitals are overwhelmed!

Bob April 30, 2020 - 3:57 PM - 3:57 PM

We should compile a list of annual CCC causes of death higher than 27.

Joe April 30, 2020 - 5:53 PM - 5:53 PM

Thank god for the fast shut down. We would look like New York right now. Yes it is hard but our country asked us to step up. We should keep going until it is time not too. Now is not the time to wimp out. It’s not about the individual it is about the many. Real Heros are people that may never meet the ones they helped. It has been said we are in a war. War demand sacrifice. But stay strong and we will win.

Janus April 30, 2020 - 6:21 PM - 6:21 PM

So let’s see, the bay area went into house arrest on March 16th. The rest of the State of California went into house arrest on March 19th and New York followed on March 20th.

Yeah, that 1 or 4 day head start made all the difference in how he virus spread… facepalm

Joe April 30, 2020 - 6:33 PM - 6:33 PM

The numbers speak for themselves. Please don’t hurt yourself facepalming.

parent April 30, 2020 - 8:58 PM - 8:58 PM

Joe
You really think the only difference in results is 4 days? Nothing to do with 10,000 people living in one large apartment building in NYC breathing through maybe a dozen different HVAC units … Or that fact that New York has half the square miles we have, but 8 times the population? Density and demographics have nothing to do with it …

And war? This is not WW2! Tired of people comparing this to war … In WW2, the country got behind the troops willingly. Rosie the Riveter … children helping the war efforts through actions, saving silk stockings for parachutes. WW2 was something that most people were able to support because they were against Hitler and his atrocities. I, and I am not alone, am not behind the Dictator NewScum or Tyrant Trump. We do not believe these actions are needed, correct or even legal. The only ‘war’ is against the corrupt politicians and the sheep that blindly follow.

Janus April 30, 2020 - 11:14 PM - 11:14 PM

I’m sure the fact that NYC has 27,016 people per square mile and 660 miles of subway tracks had absolutely nothing to do with the spread of the virus.

That one day for the other 31.76 million Californians in those other 49 counties outside the center of the universe called the Bay Area with it 7.7 million made all the difference between us and NYC. Sure it did…

War?!? That is naive and insulting to people who have actually been downrange in the sandbox.

“It’s not about the individual it is about the many.”

Thank you Mr. Spock. Now, tell me how that applies in a country founded on limited government and protecting individual liberties.

The Fearless Spectator May 1, 2020 - 9:17 AM - 9:17 AM

I don’t care for using War as an analogy. However, if someone insists on doing so, their best comparison might be the Civil War.

Our political leaders show zero unity among themselves, and certainly don’t encourage it of the public. What happened to leading by example? Names like Trump, Pelosi, Newsom, and a host of others will be remembered as people who could have done the right thing in a professional manner, but got lost in the politics. Hopefully future leaders will have learned from this.

Grocery stores are open.
Pharmacies are open.
Hardware stores are open.
Target and Walmart are open.
Restaurants offer take out or delivery.
Tech and financial and other industries are doing telecommute.
The book stores are doing curbside pick up.
Car dealerships and mechanics are open.
Construction opens back in May.
Real estate opens back in May.
Landscaping and plant nurseries opens back in May.
Handyman type work is open.
Trucking and delivery work is open.
We still have water, electricity, gas, telephone, internet services.
We can go hiking, we go ride our bikes.

This shut down isn’t as oppressive as the “Open Up” people are claiming.

Rollo Tomasi May 1, 2020 - 7:39 AM - 7:39 AM

Twenty-seven million formerly employed individuals would likely disagree with your incredibly astute assessment. I’m sure the businesses that have had to shutter their doors permanently, not to mention their employees, will be comforted by your wisdom.

Kauai Mike May 1, 2020 - 5:52 AM - 5:52 AM

891 confirmed cases with 27 deaths equals a local (CCC) kill rate of 3.03%

Rollo Tomasi May 1, 2020 - 2:43 PM - 2:43 PM

Only confirmed cases. More and more data is emerging that the actual infection rate is orders of magnitude higher, which lowers the “kill rate” significantly.
