Contra Costa is now reporting 749 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the county, which is 42 more than yesterday.

Through ongoing data quality assurance efforts, Contra Costa Health Services identified a small number of COVID-19 positive cases that had not previously been attributed to the county. Data posted on Tuesday, April 21 will include a one-time increase of 31 positive cases to account for that data.

The county has also confirmed there have been 22 coronavirus-related deaths in Contra Costa.

This is why you need to read the actual webpage. It’s NOT 42 more. There was a “one time adjustment” made to account for a correct total number.
Please correct your reporting.

Mike Wagner April 21, 2020 - 12:29 PM - 12:29 PM

I agree. It’s terribly misleading. A simple “notation” could have been added to the reported data above, but Claycord chose not to do so for some reason.

ClaytonResident April 21, 2020 - 11:54 AM - 11:54 AM

What is Clayton doing right? I know a smaller population but 5 positive cases and rarely any growth in the last few days/weeks.

Are they all refusing to get tested or are we at the point that one day boom the cases will jump?

Mike Wagner April 21, 2020 - 12:08 PM - 12:08 PM

@Claycord…. your reporting is incorrect. It’s simplistic and misleading.

Data reported today include a “one-time” adjustment of 31 positive cases to account for a small number of cases that had not been previous attributed to the county.

Mike Wagner April 21, 2020 - 12:17 PM - 12:17 PM

No, its misleading.

Per the CCHS website:

“Through ongoing data quality assurance efforts, Contra Costa Health Services identified a small number of COVID-19 positive cases that had not previously been attributed to the county. Data posted on Tuesday, April 21 will include a one-time increase of 31 positive cases to account for that data.”

Yes, mathematically is is 42 more, but they way it is represented here it looks like we had a SPIKE of 42, when in fact, we did not. We had 31 positive cases added as a correction, which makes the new case increase 11 from yesterday to today. Your reporting should reflect that.

Dd April 21, 2020 - 1:10 PM - 1:10 PM

Exactly. Simple

Maybe in someone’s fantasy world.

Happy for the chart April 21, 2020 - 12:51 PM - 12:51 PM

I am not going to split hairs on the math thing. I am just going to say out of all the news sites I check, I love the chart on this page the best!

Mark Foletta April 21, 2020 - 1:09 PM - 1:09 PM

Claycord thank you for everything you do. You can’t please everybody.

Janie April 21, 2020 - 1:41 PM - 1:41 PM

After reading all of the above, I can see why there are so many cases in our county! Majority not being smart and safe. Very sad.

Ano April 21, 2020 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

I think the heath department /cdc is covering their tracks and lying anyway.

Safety Second April 21, 2020 - 2:57 PM - 2:57 PM

22 people DOA..Where is all the outcry each year when approx. 250 Contra Costans die of the flu???
Newsom, Trump. somebody…Let us get back to work!!!
This Wuhan Virus is less deadlier than the flu…Do the research people cuz the fake news isn’t!

Safety Second April 21, 2020 - 4:10 PM - 4:10 PM

Hey Golden State Warrior, So then you’re willing to shelter in place and practice social distancing every flu season moving forward so that we can save 250 lives here in Contra Costa County? Your point about the flu vaccine is part true but do you really think 22 million unemployed people are going to wait for the Wuhan vaccine? with or without a vaccine, the flu and the Wuhan virus still need herd immunity to get us to the finish line. We need to be honest and admit that this one-size-fits-all shelter in place was very irresponsible. The economic damage to our county and state was avoidable. The amateurs who created this mess need to be fired.

JazzMan April 22, 2020 - 6:12 AM - 6:12 AM

I love the people who say, “we stayed home for 30 days, and nothing happened!”. Well, YEAH, that’s kind of the point. This COVID-19 is NOTHING like a “regular “ flu. If it’s so not fake, we’ll let you go work in the ER, care home and grocery store for 2weeks. With no protection, and see how that goes. I’m not taking chances w my life and my family’s health on a maybe. I’ve seen this, it’s SCARY!

Hey Mike Wagner – start your own blog and moderate it any way you please. If you dislike the job Claycord does, show yourself out.

JWB April 21, 2020 - 7:18 PM - 7:18 PM

better make sure that Hanne doesn’t see this how you did not reply in the correct spot.

Gittyup April 26, 2020 - 9:07 PM - 9:07 PM

@JWB That kind of ditz is catching.

Tugboattim April 21, 2020 - 3:24 PM - 3:24 PM

Makes one wonder about the validity of the entire survey. How many other times was this done when daily spikes in positives were reported?

Kaiser Souza April 21, 2020 - 3:38 PM - 3:38 PM

I wonder how many of the 5 “new” Concord cases are actually new cases vs. adjustments…

addlepate April 21, 2020 - 3:54 PM - 3:54 PM

The curve has flattened and the arc is aiming downward. COVID is harming fewer than the deadly, annual flu. Time to lift the bans and get back to work.

WC Resident April 21, 2020 - 3:54 PM - 3:54 PM

@people – there are two equally valid and accurate ways to report the numbers.

Method 1 – Only report the number of new cases that came in the door yesterday and the total number of cases. That’s what the county is doing.

Method 2 – Report the difference in the total number of cases from day to day. That is what Claycord has been doing, and does so consistently.

Both methods have their merits. What causes confusion is that the county is constantly adjusting the number of cases for previous days up and down a little. yesterday they did more adjustments than usual which created a large discrepancy between the county’s “number new cases” which is 12 and Claycord’s “change in the total number of cases” which is 42.

Read on for details…

The county is only showing data for 3/1/2020 on out. Starting today, they are saying 1 new case on 3/1/2020 for a total of 2 cases. Prior to today they reported “1 new case on 3/1/2020 for a total of 1.” We don’t know the date for that additional case other than it’s before 3/1/2020.

Normally they have been adjusting the numbers for between 1 and 6 previous days when they release a new batch of numbers. Today they adjusted the count for 23 previous days and added 30 more cases to those days. I sure which they would issue a press release for why they are making these adjustments. The number of COVID-19 tests also gets adjusted. They don’t seem to adjust the number of deaths nor the number in the hospital.

If you you add the 30 cases added via adjustments plus the 12 new cases for 4/20/2020 then you’ll see that the total number of cases increased by 42 which is exactly what Claycord reported.

Here is the list of adjustments:
Before 3/1/2020 daily count changed from 0 to 1 (+1)
03/09/2020 daily count changed from 1 to 2 (+1)
03/12/2020 daily count changed from 8 to 9 (+1)
03/17/2020 daily count changed from 6 to 7 (+1)
03/20/2020 daily count changed from 5 to 6 (+1)
03/23/2020 daily count changed from 14 to 15 (+1)
03/25/2020 daily count changed from 23 to 25 (+2)
03/26/2020 daily count changed from 15 to 16 (+1)
03/29/2020 daily count changed from 18 to 19 (+1)
03/31/2020 daily count changed from 28 to 30 (+2)
04/01/2020 daily count changed from 25 to 24 (-1)
04/03/2020 daily count changed from 49 to 50 (+1)
04/04/2020 daily count changed from 31 to 34 (+3)
04/05/2020 daily count changed from 26 to 27 (+1)
04/06/2020 daily count changed from 25 to 26 (+1)
04/07/2020 daily count changed from 19 to 20 (+1)
04/09/2020 daily count changed from 26 to 28 (+2)
04/12/2020 daily count changed from 17 to 19 (+2)
04/13/2020 daily count changed from 41 to 42 (+1)
04/14/2020 daily count changed from 20 to 22 (+2)
04/17/2020 daily count changed from 34 to 36 (+2)
04/18/2020 daily count changed from 7 to 8 (+1)

Again, the hospitalizations are still LOW and NOT OVERUN. Cases will go up, up, up as we test, test, test. ER’s are empty and elective procedures cancelled for 6 weeks. C’mon CA, let’s open her back up now!

They should kick people out of stores that are wearing a mask and coughing, Wearing a mask does not mean you don’t have to self quarantine and can go out and about. A mask is not a guarantee you wont spread the virus. Think of others… God is watching.
