The Public Health Order for people to shelter-in-place safely in their homes in seven jurisdictions throughout the Bay Area, including Contra Costa County, will soon be extended until at least May 1, according to Santa Clara County.

Additional details about the updated order will be available when it’s finalized in the next day or two, the county said.

This is ridiculous.

I’ll follow the shelter in place protocols next month just like I followed them last month.

Not at all.

This is government control at its worst.

The numbers just don’t add up.

I say all this virus scare is just a bunch of government propaganda.

Annoyed March 30, 2020 - 1:08 PM - 1:08 PM

I’ll bite. Why don’t the numbers add up? Explain it to me like I’m 5 and provide evidence where possible.

You’re totally free to believe whatever you want Cellophane. Darwinism will clear out the gene pool! Unfortunately, it’s the innocent people around you that will pay the penalty.

Cellophane March 30, 2020 - 6:25 PM - 6:25 PM

@ Annoyed. It’s real easy to look it up for yourself. Give it a shot.

@ Sign from Above Why is it all you can offer as a rebuttal is a personal attack? That diminishes anything you may have to say.

Annoyed March 30, 2020 - 6:48 PM - 6:48 PM

@cellophane I find it amusing that absurd claims are never accompanied by data, just hollow claims of “you can look it up.” No data, no analysis, just an empty claim. I wanted to give you a shot to make your point, but apparently you have none to make.

If you did have a point to make, you’d make it rationally and logically by providing DATA, or any kind of evidence, really.

Ha ha! Just a big hoax! Wait that is what Trump said! Go forward!! Oh now it isn’t a hoax! Oh please remember he is sending you a check! So he wants your vote. Just forget that thousands of Americans are sick and will die. Oh I am going to run around and have fun all by myself. To hell with it I am not going to believe this. This damn government is full of it. Ha ha ha ha!

Cellophane March 31, 2020 - 7:44 AM - 7:44 AM

@Annoyed

As I had suspected and you proved with your second comment, there is little I could say or prove to you that would change your opinion.

Why should I produce evidence openly available just so you can deny it’s credibility?

The “explain it to me like I’m a 5-year-old” gave you away.

As I said, it’s easy to find for yourself.

Media lied? Wow!? I never would have expected them to do that. At least the politicians are being honest, right? They would never lie to us, would they?
Sarcasm off …
Yeah, media has been misrepresenting this since it started. So have the politicians. They are only showing you what they want you to see, so that you will panic. They are trying to control us through fear and intimidation.

All ya need to do is take a look at New York and New Jersey stats, to see what’s happening in those states where liberal elected officials waited to impose shelter in place.

As of this post
New York,
Total cases 66,497, new cases (today) 5,818, total number dead 1,218, deaths today 155

New Jersey ,
Total cases 16,636, new cases (today) 3,250, total number dead 198, deaths today 37

California,
Total cases 6,358, new cases (today) 154, total number dead 132, deaths today 1

State, counties and cities will see a drop in sales tax and fuel tax revenue. Disposable income for most part will be wiped out.

Annoyed March 30, 2020 - 1:06 PM - 1:06 PM

Could you kindly provide a link to some evidence of your claim? Seems hard to believe that so many levels of multiple governments would react so swiftly if there was such easily available evidence stating that none of this is necessary.

Curious George March 30, 2020 - 1:06 PM - 1:06 PM

Had an interesting conversation with a front line ER nurse in Seattle today. Quizzed him about Covid cases…response was that the majority of walk in’s are what he considered, if anything, mostly allergy cases that people are not sure if it’s the usual yearly ordeal or it may be something to be concerned about. Many, many hypochondriacs out there….just sayin.

Otherwise he said Covid cases are NOT rampant.I just don’t know what to think sometimes….

Be safe everyone

Wage Slave March 30, 2020 - 3:43 PM - 3:43 PM

My neighbor works at a Contra Costa hospital in medical imaging, and he said it is pretty much quiet. They cancelled all electives and cleared out all patients they could to prepare for this, and so far have been sitting around for the most part for the last two weeks. There are some CV patients, but not in any way overwhelming.

I realize that is just one hospital, and not anything to draw conclusions from, but still interesting anecdotally.

This could come down to, some areas are just bigger hot spots than others, and the shelter in place type rules can be shrunk down to those areas as the trends become more well known. It’s all an information battle, we just need so much more.

Hanne Jeppesen March 30, 2020 - 1:06 PM - 1:06 PM

I have the feeling those who think this is overblown are mostly conservatives.
If you listen to Talk Radio I urge you to listen to Michael Savage, or go to his website. Savage is as conservative as they come, but he is also a scientist, has a Ph.D. in epidemiology, so he know of what he speaks. While he is critical of some of the measures the government are taking (local and federal) he is by no means casual about the virus.

Carnac the Magnificent March 30, 2020 - 2:38 PM - 2:38 PM

Michael Savage’s Ph.D is not in epidemiology. His Ph.D is from Cal in nutritional ethnomedicine. He also has MSs in botany and medical anthropology.

Savage also has ties to wack-ado Alex Jones and he is banned from visiting the UK for “seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred.”

I found all that out in about 2 seconds. How come you did not?

Carnac the Magnificent March 30, 2020 - 3:31 PM - 3:31 PM

Not sure why it is so difficult for you to respond to the correct post but if you listen to experts like Dr Anthony S. Fauci than you are going to find the latest article he coauthored in the New England Journal of Medicine titled “Covid-19 — Navigating the Uncharted” dated March 26,2020 downright fascinating.

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387

Carnac the Magnificent March 30, 2020 - 4:34 PM - 4:34 PM

The fact of the matter is Savage is NOT who you claimed he was. You infer his is a racist yet you feel totally justified in using him as an example for people to follow… since I guess you believe all conservatives are racists tinfoil hat wearing simpletons who need a big government loving foreign born liberal to MAKE them see the light.

Then you use a Straw Man Fallacy by adding well Trump does this and Trump does that when Trump has absolutely nothing to do with Savage not being a epidemiologist as you claimed he was.

RANDOM TASK March 30, 2020 - 1:08 PM - 1:08 PM

well take a walk or drive down to a local hospital and see just how farce it is

we will wait ….go now

Hanne Jeppesen March 30, 2020 - 5:53 PM - 5:53 PM

I never said he was a racist. I just don’t care for his show when he starts ranting and raving about immigrants and Muslim’s, he might have a point I just don’t like his communications style, that is not a left or right thing, there are liberal hosts I don’t listen to because I don’t care for how the communicate. I certainly do not believe that all republican’s are racist, I would say most are not. I didn’t mention Trump in any of the posts about Savage. Your comments are confusing, in your first post you sound like you are very critical of Savage, mention his ties to Alex Jones, and him being banned in the UK. Then you seem upset when I’m somewhat critical of Savage. Which is it, my comment didn’t have much to do with politics, it was about the virus and shelter in place. You reading meaning into my comments that are not there. Nor am I trying to convert anyone, I have lived long enough to know that is a lost course. I don’t see how you can deduct that I’m a big government liberal? All I was talking about was the virus. If you have a discussion with me about the IRS or Social Security you will know that I’m not enamored of big government institution. I love how some people point out I’m foreign born. I have been here more than 50 years legally, I raised a daughter who has a very successful life, I have owned a business, been self employed and worked in various industries and always paid my taxes. I have come across people who are born here who are more critical of the US than I am

Hanne Jeppesen March 30, 2020 - 6:28 PM - 6:28 PM

Carnac, Why would I disregard something Savage said if I agree with it, just because I disagree with him on other issues. When I go to the doctor, dentist or even my car mechanic I don’t ask about their politics, nor do I care. I just care that they will fix me or my car.

I get it’s annoying we have to stay inside and the government sucks and whatever.. but literally think of the people that can actually get sick because of the people that refuse to stay at home. I get the media makes it seem worse than it is but there are people who are really at risk of dying. Even if it’s not a huge chance why put them at risk. it’s not all older people. It’s not a death sentence for you to stay inside, it’s a death sentence for those that you put at risk for going outside. Go to the store, get what you need, then go home and stay home.. enjoy the time at home. Pretty sure once work starts up again everybody will start complaining about how tired they are and how they wish they were at home. You had the chance but you didn’t take it. Relax. Think of others for once. If the media bothers you don’t pay attention to it.

I get it, You make a lot of sense. People that don’t want to take this seriously are putting others at risk. I’m not a scientist, but what I understand about this virus, it is VERY contagious, and if you have it you feel horrible, and it is not only older people that die, and as an older person I’m offended and some think my life is dispensable I don’t see how all the doctor’s and scientist, not only in this country, but around the world can be wrong. I’m pretty sure they are not all democrats. See my early post about Michael Savage, and I have a close friend who has a Ph.D. in biochemistry, he is very conservative, and have often mentioned that many he knows in the scientific community are conservative, might not all be Trump supporters, but conservatives never the less.

Another Teacher March 30, 2020 - 3:15 PM - 3:15 PM

I wish we could put up a list of people that are opting out of the “Shelter In Place” so they can be avoided by everyone else. They seem so proud that they aren’t following the orders, they should be willing to give their full name, photo, and GPS location at all times. That way, when they become infected with Covid, it will be easier to track where they have been and who they have been in contact with. I wish people would grow up and think about others.

Hanne Jeppesen March 30, 2020 - 3:28 PM - 3:28 PM

Another Teacher, You to make a lot of sense. What makes these people think they are so special that they can do whatever the want, even if there is a danger to their fellow human beings.

parent March 30, 2020 - 5:23 PM - 5:23 PM

Violation of the shelter in place is a misdemeanor, I believe. I was at Costco yesterday for essential shopping (milk, eggs and meat). I was at Petco today for cat food. Both of these in Concord. I filled my vehicle yesterday at Rotten Robbie on Contra Costa Blvd.

I stay away from people, though most stay away from me because i have a chronic post nasal drip allergy almost all year long. I wipe my hands when I get in vehicle and wash them as soon as I walk in the house.

I am not special, but I am citizen of this country. There is no marital law that says that I cannot leave my house. I am doing what I NEED to do Hanne Jeppesen, not what I want. I want to go back to my office. I want to see my sons play sports again. I want to be able to enjoy time with my entire family and not just my household.

Danger to our fellow human beings. Let’s see, knowing you have a cold, flu, SARS, or SARS2 (COVID-19 for those that you that don’t they COVID-19 is a variation of SARS), mean you stay home because you are sick- if you do not, you are a danger to our fellow human beings. Knowing you have asthma, COPD, CHF means you stay away from sick people so that you do not have medical complications- if you do not, you are a danger to our fellow human beings. If you smoke in public, you harm folks. If you smoke in your house around children, you harm them. Those are dangerous and are historically and data-driven more dangerous then SARS2. So why are you not up in arms about that? Each one of the examples I provided will kill you just as well as SARS2.

JWB April 1, 2020 - 12:24 PM - 12:24 PM

@ parent
“Knowing you have asthma, COPD, CHF means you stay away from sick people ”

Maybe you should hold back on medical advise, as a matter of fact there are many more conditions at risk of severe COVID disease other than asthma, COPD, CHF, in particular diabetes, hypertension and cancer.

“In an article published in JAMA, Zunyou Wu, MD, and Jennifer M. McGoogan, PhD, summarized the findings from a February report on 44,672 confirmed cases of the disease from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The overall case-fatality rate (CFR) at that stage was 2.3% (1,023 deaths of the 44,672 confirmed cases). The data indicated that the CFR was elevated among COVID-19 patients with preexisting comorbid conditions, specifically, cardiovascular disease (CFR, 10.5%), diabetes (7.3%), chronic respiratory disease (6.3%), hypertension (6%), and cancer (5.6%).”

Also the virus is not called SARS2. SARS is an acronym standing for severe acute respiratory syndrome, The virus is called SARS-CoV-2 and while it has a lot of similarity to SARS-CoV, the coronavirus (CoV) that caused SARS in 2002, it is not just a variation of SARS-CoV.

Parent, There is a difference between going out of get the things you need from the stores that are open. I’m a cat lover, don’t have one now, but I certainly understand getting cat food and groceries. I go out and get necessities, but I keep my distance, wipe everything down, and only go out a few times a week. I think what commenters here are objecting to, is those that seem to want to go out just to spite the shelter in place. This is not forever, we can all make a few sacrifices for a few months, won’t kill us. My daughter is expecting my second grandchild in just 2 weeks, don’t know when I will be able to see him, hopefully sometime in May.

Several comments here make a lot of sense, and Old School’s comment about the nurse is really eye opening. Hats off to those on the front line so to speak.

The fact is that we haven’t yet seen the giant spike in infections and deaths the experts predicted. So seeing an accurate count is helpful. Be nice if they would offer the stats for hospitalizations and deaths from the flu, suicide, etc…for this same time period to give some context to these numbers.

As for the science…virus action and spread, possible new tests, vaccines and treatments, I will listen to the CDC. They are the experts, they are receiving data from around the world.
