Beyond Claycord – San Francisco Renews Push For Safe Injection Sites Where People Can Use Drugs

San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Supervisor Matt Haney announced Thursday that they will introduce legislation to create indoor sites where people can use drugs.

The “Overdose Prevention Programs Ordinance” would allow non-profit organizations to seek permits from the city’s Department of Public Health to operate the facilities.

The facilities would not only allow drug use, but they would also provide people access to treatment services.

Breed and Haney plan to introduce the legislation at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

The legislation, however, would only go into effect if the state Legislature passes and the governor signs Assembly Bill 362, allowing the city to operate a supervised safe injection site in San Francisco.

The legislation is the second attempt by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and Assemblywoman Susan Eggman, D-Stockton, to create a safe injection site in the city. Then-Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed their first attempt.

The sites would cost the city $3.5 million annually, citing a 2017 Safe Injection Services Task Force report.

Look as much as I and everyone else thinks SF is out of a cartoon episode, let’s look at one key item. FED’s war on drugs and yet you want to sink 3.5M a year on junkies or functioning junkies. So why not push legislation towards the federal level to obtain city license to disperse pharmaceutical grade heroin and also offer these sites (only to those that buy/given for free the stuff to use on-site, much like a bar won”t let you bring your own booze) to offset the cost. Just seems counter productive to sink that much money addressing the user but not the source (IE the street players, eliminate them from the equation as much as possible)

Dawg February 27, 2020 - 4:57 PM - 4:57 PM

With the high cost of prescription drugs, street heroin would be a lot cheaper than pharmaceutical heroin.

Any difference than a person decides today is the day they go to a bar/store to become an alcoholic and drink on the job? Exposure to the substance doesn’t seem to be the problem. If tar/cocaine/meth, etc was readily available how many people on thier way home who never played with the aforementioned would think, hmmm….time for a shot/rail, etc.

@DAWG… it’s already happened with the epidemic. Several states are suing the pharma companies for this issue. The data points are all pointing to this issue from at least 2+ years back

RANDOM TASK February 27, 2020 - 4:06 PM - 4:06 PM

Sure! What could possibly go wrong?

Tsa February 27, 2020 - 4:48 PM - 4:48 PM

Absolute insanity in the Sh**y by the Bay, next they’ll want taxpayers to purchase the illegal drugs.

Dorothy February 27, 2020 - 4:53 PM - 4:53 PM

Better to send the dealers to jail. Even if they only spend a few days there it is at least that much time they aren’t selling the stuff.

Ricardoh February 27, 2020 - 4:55 PM - 4:55 PM

Instead of putting them in rehab. They may not be able to save them all but maybe some.

ON DA February 27, 2020 - 5:03 PM - 5:03 PM

I disagree with Senator Wiener on many uncertain issues that I am not educated with. This crisis is one that can and should be addressed immediately.

Fund the issue. It will provide a way to reach out to those that believe they are forever a lost cause.

As a weed smoking liberal I say the safe injection spot should be on the shooting range. Screw tweekers and heroin users

Those Hippies need to get high on life instead of drugs.

Have to think there is something in the city’s charter that addresses helping someone break the law.

Good luck with the Department of Justice and the Attorney General.

How do they force junkies to go to these sites? If they’ve already got the heroin – what would make them walk to get to one of these places to shoot up? Unless they’re going to put these on every corner – like Starbucks – who’s going to go there? Don’t start with that “offering treatment” crap. They don’t want treatment. If they overdose…. it’s their own stupid fault. Spend the $3 mil cleaning up the City. SF used to be such a beautiful, fun city. Now it’s a dump thanks to idiot Dems.

The Fearless Spectator February 27, 2020 - 6:24 PM - 6:24 PM

Has she been hanging around with Newsom?

Enabling people is not treatment, it’s not rehabilitation, and we (the non-addicted) should not have to pay for it.

Someday they will write a book about California politicians, and it will be put in the fiction section because no educated person will ever believe it.

itsme February 27, 2020 - 6:47 PM - 6:47 PM

The stock market tanked today.

Partly because investors don’t approve of Trump’s appointment of Mike Pence to oversee our coronavirus defense.

This is because new cases of HIV rose in Indiana because Pence killed a needle exchange program and defunded Planned Parenthood, where addicts could get clean needles.

You see folks, addicts will use drugs whether you approve of it or not, whether they have clean needle or not, when they’re on the sidewalk you walk down. They don’t care about your morals.

If you get them into a shelter, you control disease. You can also try to get them help to get them off drugs. It’s a positive action for public health, when the more obvious tactics like incarceration and abstinence have failed.

Or, you can be Mike Pence.

Atticus Thraxx February 27, 2020 - 7:17 PM - 7:17 PM

While I’m sure it’s all well intentioned, is there any evidence at all these programs meet their objectives? Any? I hear a lot of lofty talk, but see no verifiable data. To be fair I haven’t actually looked all that hard for the data.

sign from above February 27, 2020 - 7:27 PM - 7:27 PM

Unfortunately, California, as a whole, is lost. SF? They’re just wacked beyond belief!

Kirkwood February 27, 2020 - 7:53 PM - 7:53 PM

Well I guess why not? SFO has provided free syringes to anybody who wants them for years. City claims it’s cheaper than than treating for hepatitis from dirty needles.

Doh February 27, 2020 - 8:07 PM - 8:07 PM

There are a few advantages making this idea worthy of consideration.
-clean needles to stop the spread of disease
-the needless get disposed of properly instead of dropped on the street or where ever they get dropped
-junkies don’t have to go to McDonald’s to shoot up in case they over dose. Someone is there to call an ambulance.
-counselors have an opportunity to talk with some who might get saved

Rosebud February 27, 2020 - 9:20 PM - 9:20 PM

Just another way to REDUCE population, think about it.

Janon February 27, 2020 - 10:15 PM - 10:15 PM

Here’s the thing for me, if a drug user at one of these sites God forbid passes, Will their family then sue the city or California. because that kind of liability is a fright.

As the saying goes: Build it and they will come. San Francisco – the haven for bums, criminals and drug addicts.

PO'd February 28, 2020 - 7:48 AM - 7:48 AM

One thing is a certainty- more junkies will find their way to San Francisco and
more tourists will find somewhere else to go.

Sam Malone February 28, 2020 - 8:42 AM - 8:42 AM

What happened to being able to live your life without having to worry about every little thing. Taxation without representation is out of control. Tax issues put on the ballot are worded to confuse everyone who doesn’t take the time to read. You have to continually look over your shoulder as there seems someone or something is not abiding by the law and we have to keep paying for others mistakes.
Stop pandering to the entitlement crowd who does not want to work because they are given everything and then some for free at the cost of those who take pride in themselves and work for a living.

We need to take back out country and get on square footing.

Ricardoh February 28, 2020 - 8:57 AM - 8:57 AM

You may think this sounds cold and maybe it is but since the city is not trying rehab but allows this madness to go on the three hundred and some who died from an overdose in San Francisco last year went out doing what they love.

America February 28, 2020 - 5:20 PM - 5:20 PM

Yea, sure let’s spend money to give criminals and they are criminals, because they are shooting up illegal drugs , a safe secure place to commit their crime! Most asinine thing I have ever heard !!!

Robert March 2, 2020 - 12:31 AM - 12:31 AM

Witch close friends or relatives of the mayors will run these nonprofit organizations and most likely get grants to do so. taking your money to line the pockets of the 1%ers. I see it as another political money-making scam
