Enrollment In Covered California May Be Up 20% Over Last Year

Covered California officials on Tuesday will provide a snapshot of the latest insurance enrollment numbers, the officials said Monday.

Last March 276,350 Bay Area residents enrolled in Covered California, which offers discounts to some state residents on brand-name health insurance and where others can sign up for Medi-Cal, the state’s Medcaid program.

About 1.4 million people statewide enrolled in Covered California last March. The new numbers may be up 20 percent over last year, a Covered California spokesman said recently.

“We’ve seen significant interest in enrollment” in this enrollment period, which ended Jan. 31, Covered California spokesman James Scullary said.

Last year was a down year because no penalty existed for people who did not have insurance, he said.

But state legislators enacted a law that took effect Jan. 1 that requires most California residents to have insurance or face a penalty at tax time. No penalty exists at the federal level anymore.

Scullary said the penalty provides an economic “nudge” for people to get insurance.

Economic “nudge”? BS, it’s called kiss your freedom goodbye, again. Freedom to not carry health insurance is a right. On the other hand, health insurance is not.

Hopefully you or a loved one won’t get cancer or have an accident. But if you do – hey – Social Darwinism at it’s finest…

I’m willing to let you not have health insurance, but you have to put up a bond to prove you won’t be a burden on the rest of us when you go to the hospital.

As long as you pay cash up front for all services in including hospitals I have no problem with you having no health coverage.

Never said freedom was fair or easy. Ultimate freedom requires accepting responsibility for ones actions. If you choose to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, I think you should be allowed that freedom. But if you crack open your head in an accident, that’s the price you pay.

Pyrrhus February 19, 2020 - 8:20 AM - 8:20 AM

Riding without a helmet is one thing. Seeing your child get cancer and then going 10’s of thousands in debt, that’s not a choice or freedom. I’d rather my taxes go to helping everyone in this country than paying for more war.

I’m paying $800 a month for my family health care through my work. Yet, my plan gets worse and worse every year. I have to pay $150 for the emergency room, $30 to see a doctor, $1,000 if you want to have a baby delivered. They will only prescribe medicine that is covered (even though the doctor would like to do otherwise) unless you want to spend $100’s. You have to hit $1,5000 a person before the costs are completely covered. Between Insurances, dental work, and medical I’ve spent nearly $20,000 last year on the three of us. I can tell you, I’ve forgone going to the doctor or thought twice about going to the emergency room because I was afraid of the bill. That is not freedom. But yeah, sending soldiers to protect the economic interests in the middle east is totally for freedom.

If you work and can’t get free $$ relief, CA.Care is unaffordable, your deductible is high and your out of pocket is high … No Bueno

Covered California saved my life! It’s not perfect, but it’s a Godsend for many of us who were unable to get insurance through their employers.

Roz February 18, 2020 - 1:04 PM - 1:04 PM

Glad to hear that for you!
My Brother’s job does not have health insurance, he is an independent driver, his own company. With Covered California, he pays less for his Kaiser plan.

Go directly to a couple a of major carriers and get quotes. Then get a Covered California quote. Going direct will cost less.

I have to join the others in being so thankful for Covered California. I’m self employed and was able to obtain descent coverage – I have to pay of course but am helped too.
