John Muir National Historic Site is seeking applicants for the 2020 Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) summer program to work and learn alongside National Park Service (NPS) rangers. YCC is a paid outdoor work program that provides a safe, educational, and meaningful experience for young adults of all backgrounds and interests.

The purpose of the program is to provide local youth, ages 15-18, an opportunity to gain work experience and skills, learn about their local environment and explore careers in environmental science, conservation, parks and recreation. YCC members will assist with a variety of work projects to help restore and protect the natural and cultural heritage at John Muir NHS and several other NPS sites in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. This experience also includes several educational field trips, such as camping trips to two National Park sites.

The work program is eight weeks long, from June 15 – August 7, 2020. Work hours are 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. YCC members are paid the California State Minimum Wage, $13.00 per hour.

Minimum wage, and don’t they also deduct for meals and housing?

Great opportunity for a young person but even when I was that age I could already do better than minimum wage. I was making $16+ an hour in high school as a busboy in 2007 when minimum wage was $8.

You don’t go into this for the money.

I get that, but it’s becoming increasingly hard to make that sacrifice these days. If the pay isn’t enough to live on, then many young adults might not be able to do it because they have to survive.

It’s ok to do things because they are your passion. But how many young people can’t follow their dreams because they have to feed their families? Only people with a support network deserve this kind of job?

I agree in general – but they’re looking for 15 – 18 yr olds – generally that age range doesn’t need to subsist on their income. Most of them are still in high school, living with mom and dad before heading off to college.
