Of course I’ll miss Kmart! The seasonal delights they had, all the decorations for my big house. The employees, not so much. Many were rude almost to the point of violence, but what can you say. I hope they put a local Walmart there; that would be great.

No Walmart! Concord has managed to keep them out and we don’t need another trash retailer in our area. I didn’t go very often to KM, but really didn’t mind having one close by, either. If any big box store moves in, I’d hope it’d be Target or one with a bit more class than Walfart! Walmart has ruined small business and give their employees the worst possible benefits, hence bad employees and a trashy experience. Maybe rebuilding the small movie theater which once was out here would be better! Clayton Rd used to be nice, but truly has declined over the years…

The closest store like this is Target in Walnut Creek or Pleasant Hill.

Very sad. So many happy memories of shopping with my children and eating lunch at the cafe in the back of the store. I have walked those floors for many many years. It’s a changing world out there !!
where was the cafe exactly??? i could see no remdents of it or was it in back corner where the cold goods used to be
There was food for sale in the front years ago,but no café in the back ever,they are thinking of a different kmart
James. There was definitely a cafe in the back of K Mart. I am talking 40 yrs ago. They served hot meals, not just sandwiches.
The cafe was straight back, about where the electronics section is/was. Actually, pretty good food for the price. Went there often for a quick lunch when the kids were little (they are now in their 40’s).
Not at all! That place was overpriced and outdated . Target would have been a great and fantastic improvement. Anything else built there like a Walmart or other low class suggestions would unfortunately keep Concord from being a good city that it is destined to be. Hopefully the new occupants are positive for the neighborhood without attracting trash.

Yes, especially when it was a thriving store with sales associates who were happy to help customers. I won’t miss what it became towards the end.
Was thinking about it becoming a High-End Shopping Mall. with a grand piano and pianist. Why not. There is so much space. Simple, but with integration of new technology in malls and even unique designs not found anywhere else.
Bistro’s inside or small eateries along the way. Just saying.
I will miss not shopping there.

well i got a red kmart handbasket for 5 bycjs among with other odd and ends and a 22inch dell montior which now is starting to flicker i can tell it worn lol lived hard life oh well only payed 10 bucks for it
We moved to Clayton 37 years ago and have shopped at this K-Mart the whole time. Great for most household supplies, kitchen supplies, not to mention seasonal decorating items. Twice I’ve had to run to K-Mart to buy a microwave. The convenience of this type of store so close to home is unbeatable. This is sad and yes, I’ll miss it.

No not really, I have been in any K Mart probably less then 10-12 times since I came to California in early 1975. First I lived in the City, don’t remember going to K-Mart. Then I lived in Marinwood (Marin County) don’t remember ever going to a K Mart. Then moved to Foster City in 1982 and lived there until 1998. did go to a K Mart in San Mateo a few times. Moved to Benicia in 1998 and lived there for 10 years, did go to K mart a few times, this is when they were carrying Martha Stewart product, didn’t buy much, have lived in Concord, since 2008 went to the one on Clayton Road a few times, ones looking for a bike, but ended up buying one from Walmart. I like a good discount, but I think Target is a better store, much better merchandising, and a lot of things that are low cost I can get at the $$ store, candles, cleaning supplies, tissues, lots of stuff, I either shop there or CVS because of all their coupons. I also work at Macy’s, and they offer a generous employee discount, so I buy my clothes, kitchen items and bedding from my workplace. So the long of short is no I will not miss KMart.

It was my go to place right down the street. Could by fishing poles, flowers, clothes etc. I will miss it.
It was nice being able to go just down the street for things. I spent money there and I’ll miss it too.
The demise of Concord is the change in demographics that don’t shop in these kind of stores,only their theme type stores,y’know?Same with Safeway on Monument.the store wasn’t needed because the people in that area didn’t shop there.
The Safeway store closed because it was outdated and was too small to remain profitable. It is about the size of a current Trader Joe’s.
Had OSH gone out sooner they may have been able to use that space but it was not because it was not utilized. Now we only have FoodMaxx and it is overpriced empty shelves and long lines at the checkout.
Gd lk on Monument.Safeway on Monument went out of business because they people there would do everything they could to shop at everystore but the evil Safeway,but they went in there a lot to”borrow” things the emplyees told me,and that they could only ever account for about half of the stores inventory thru sales.The rst just disappeared and the store was bleeding money by staying in the are.Daemographocs are the reason Concord and now Clayton is going downhill.The intersection at Ayers and Clayton should never have had an AM/PM Arco Popeyes put there.It makes traffic there impossible,and those 2 businesses are almost always exclusively for the hood.Lots of people that usually would have no reason to be in Clayton now go there for that corner.
I was at the grand opening of the Kmart back in 1978. I am going to miss it. This store did have a cafeteria in the back many years ago. It was walled up during one of the remodels. Since it is closed forever we will never see it again but if you ever noticed a small patch of brown tile floor appearing from the back center wall that was where the cafeteria was. These was also a single door with a small square window in it. Behind that door were the remnants of the old cafeteria. So long Concord Kmart.
This is bittersweet. I always hated K-Mart, it felt like a poor mans Target. However I secretly loved K-Mart because of the ease of being able to go grab something you need like cheap Christmas gifts or cheap toiletries. It is sad to see anything come to an end, especially because this store was a staple of my childhood living in that neighborhood. Back to school shopping at McCaulous and Kmart. So long brick and mortar stores. Jesus I’m getting old.
Re-purpose into a giant homeless shelter – already has the roof, heat & A/C, plumbing & electrical. Add bathrooms, cafeteria (resident jobs), and classrooms for vocational training. Put a community garden in parking lot.

Not really. I was never a regular customer.
It did have an amazing exterior and spacious parking.
Inside was a whole other experience. The layout was a little odd and sometimes unorganized. I rarely found what I was seeking. One time I wanted a DVD that had come out a month earlier. They not only didn’t have it, their selection was incredibly outdated to the point where I question if anyone ever bought movies there. When I did find an item I was seeking, such as an appliance, I could tell it was already opened. Pricing was hard to determine for some items, as they weren’t always clearly marked. Every time, and I’m serious here, every time I went to the check out, someone in front of me always haggled about the price of an item. Checking out was never a pleasurable experience.
That being said, there were a few items I did get there. Perhaps my best memory is that I found an artificial Christmas tree there a few years back, that was pretty nice, and I still have today.
For me, K-Mart was a quick destination if I was seeking something and didn’t want to travel to Target. But more often than not, I ended up at Target to find what I was seeking.
Checking out was always an ordeal and maddening,so much fluff,and don’t forget the 3 foot long paper receipt even if you only bought one item.
I miss what it (& the whole area) used to be in the 70’s. The contrast between the east bay and San Francisco was huge. We didn’t have 100 degree summer days, friends with swimming pools, horse ranches throughout he valley, gleaming hot rods, girls in shorts, or Kmart with it’s vast selection and low prices. It was a very clean store in those days and fun to shop..
Put a sporting goods store and indoor gun range. That is what is needed. I have to drive all the way to Dublin to shoot indoors. The last thing we need there is a homeless sheltering. Pandering to the drug addicts and criminals.

Yes, will miss the convenient trips to get household items so I didn’t have to drive all the way to Target. I wonder what they will do with the property now? I worry about it sitting empty for a long time and drawing a crime element or homeless encampment.
Already the motorhomers have discovered it.
The last time ( a few months ago) I shopped at K-Mart I witnessed a fight. That pretty much sums it up. No I won’t miss it.
I was amazed that store stayed open as long as it did. You could tell the end was near about 9 months ago when their stock was not being replenished. Kmart is just a dinosaur of the retail marketplace. I will not miss it.
A “Trader Joe’s” would be Great..
I’ll miss what it could have and should have been–a convenient local alternative to Target. Too often they were out of stock, short staffed, or couldn’t figure out how to check you out without some sort of equipment malfunction or other delay. But their prices for some items were good and their rewards points system was good if you knew how to use it.
Got an email today from a company called TransformCO that says they now own all my personal information from Sears and Kmart.
Never did a whole lot of shopping there. Did, however, go in there for the toy deals so our family could donate to Toys For Tots.
The question now is what will go into that space. If we could get a Target, that would be amazing.
