I still think that the old K-Mart would be a great place for the homeless and section low-income housing.

The City should buy the property, rezone it residential and start building apartments and shelters.

They could even add a floor or two for luxury apartments to help pay for the homeless shelter and low-income apartments.

Imagine the variety of services that could be provided for the homeless and low income.

There could even be a battered women’s shelter there too.

Real February 12, 2020 - 12:31 PM - 12:31 PM

I’m sure the neighboring community would love that! OR use a area like the Naval weapons station, Homeless Center on Clayton Rd. would be a joke…

silly February 12, 2020 - 12:54 PM - 12:54 PM

how about the homeless be moved next to your house, you could put up tents in your yard for them! we do not need our housing costs to drop in this area!!! there is military housing thats been empty, move the homeless into those homes! not in my area….

Concord Resident February 12, 2020 - 1:04 PM - 1:04 PM

And imagine all of the ADDITIONAL crime and litter the neighborhood would have, not to mention the price drop in real estate for those that might want to sell their homes. That area has enough of that already, no need to make it worse. But hey, maybe you can let them live with you or on your street!

Really February 12, 2020 - 1:40 PM - 1:40 PM

Homeless Center would be a horrible idea in this location.

I agree with Real.

anon February 12, 2020 - 3:10 PM - 3:10 PM

Hell No!!!

WC February 12, 2020 - 4:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Luxury Apartments upstairs? What a terrific idea. The homeless will only have to take the elevator up to steal stuff.

94521 February 12, 2020 - 4:48 PM - 4:48 PM

I agree… it’s already a homeless area and the homeless that live in Newhall Park and Bailey Rd, and the Treat/Clayton shopping center by the Post office would have access to shelter. The battered women’s shelter is a good idea as well. That area is a great mix of affluence, pay check to pay check families and low income. We’re all in it together. The homeless frequent Clayton Rd. And while the bus service is not the best, there is a route on Clayton Rd. And yes , I live in the area.

Bob February 12, 2020 - 6:41 PM - 6:41 PM

ARE YOU FOR REAL !!

Amy February 12, 2020 - 11:11 PM - 11:11 PM

You must be kidding! I Don’t forget a halfway house for felons and mentally ill.

Sharon February 12, 2020 - 1:43 PM - 1:43 PM

Yes!!!!!!!! Olive garden yes! No walmart no target

Concord Home Girl February 12, 2020 - 11:57 AM - 11:57 AM

Lucky’s isn’t all that busy or even the best store. Let’s not renew their lease and put in a Target or Trader Joe’s.

Sign from Above February 12, 2020 - 12:10 PM - 12:10 PM

That sounds like a great idea. I never go in there. Prices are higher and the quality of their meat is inferior to Safeway or Sam’s Club. If they’re so afraid of a little competition they should go!

dd February 12, 2020 - 12:56 PM - 12:56 PM

YES

Bad Nombre February 12, 2020 - 12:19 PM - 12:19 PM

Yee Haw! Count me in!

The REAL just me February 12, 2020 - 12:24 PM - 12:24 PM

A few retailers that seem to be expanding come to mind-
Sephora just announced plans to expand into suburban strip malls

Hobby Lobby

Rockin’ Jump is expanding

Best Buy had a great year maybe they look to expand to Concord with/when Fry’s closes and the City of Concord looks for more tax revenue

along shot but…..Does Macy’s look at opening up one of their new concept stores in Suburban areas that include food there?

The REAL just me February 12, 2020 - 12:50 PM - 12:50 PM

I meant to add-
Dicks or Academy Sports
One other expanding business is Planet Fitness..

And as Brad mentioned Sportsman’s Warehouse (Tj Max co) is expanding as well. Maybe TJ MAxx moves and expands with their Home and Sportsman’s brands.

Marylou Edmondson February 12, 2020 - 10:20 PM - 10:20 PM

No to Dick’s – I’m still mad at them for tearing down the Dome.

ClayDen February 12, 2020 - 12:38 PM - 12:38 PM

A Hobby Shop and Barnes & Noble would be great.

AnonZ February 12, 2020 - 12:38 PM - 12:38 PM

Target needs to suck it up and take the space. We don’t need a grocery store but we NEED the rest of what they offer on this side of town!

Walmart: F*CK NO!!!

Concord76 February 12, 2020 - 12:44 PM - 12:44 PM

This would be a great place to put in a family fun center with skating and games and educational experiences for kids of all ages. It could also include fun things to do for kids with special needs. It’s well located, descent parking and would give kids more options s then just laser tag and the jungle

Shelby February 12, 2020 - 6:31 PM - 6:31 PM

YASSSS

KO February 12, 2020 - 1:10 PM - 1:10 PM

Guess what? No one’s collecting votes for what you all want/don’t want to go there. You get what you get.

peter bennett February 12, 2020 - 1:13 PM - 1:13 PM

A new homeless shelter for 300 people

Diane February 12, 2020 - 1:14 PM - 1:14 PM

Dave and Busters and some restaurants or one of those mystery dinner places and an escape room place. A high class billiards place. Or comedy club! Get inventive!

No walmart. You bring walmart clientele along with it.no dollar stores please!! And hell yo the no fir a homeless shelter Are you kidding??? I work in the Tenderloin in SF. Want to come visit me here? I’d be glad to show you what Concord would bring in.

Daulton February 12, 2020 - 9:18 PM - 9:18 PM

Don’t kid yourself, concord residents are Walmart clientele.

Alex February 12, 2020 - 1:29 PM - 1:29 PM

Trader Joe’s!!!

Hanne Jeppesen February 12, 2020 - 3:39 PM - 3:39 PM

Not another TJ’s too close to TJ’s on Oak Grove.
Sprout’s would be good, the one by Treat has bad parking.

Alex February 13, 2020 - 8:46 AM - 8:46 AM

Yes sprouts would be good!! The parking does suck there.
But tjs would be 4.4 miles away from oak grove location whereas the oak grove and concord blv is currently 4.2 miles away. Definitely doable. Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Target, Barnes and Noble. Anything good please!!!

Laura February 12, 2020 - 1:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Just put in a super size Chick-Fil-A and make us all happy.

Tsa February 12, 2020 - 1:35 PM - 1:35 PM

Super-Walmart or a Target, but neither will happen.

JazzMan February 12, 2020 - 2:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Lucky owns that whole section and has already said “No” to Target and Walmart. Someone mentioned Chick fil-a. One is going in on Willow Pass across from the old Elephant Bar, doubt it.

DVC Student February 12, 2020 - 1:48 PM - 1:48 PM

90,000 square feet of Asbestos in those walls.

double dzzz February 12, 2020 - 2:59 PM - 2:59 PM

Big box stores always will be close to freways. were too far over for most of them. not enough traffic here for em.

Joe February 12, 2020 - 4:16 PM - 4:16 PM

No not Dicks !
I hear the PH store is no longer to sell guns or ammo.

Let’s have a real store…… Dicks is dead to me !

Joe

1791 February 13, 2020 - 6:39 PM - 6:39 PM

Agree, NO to the appropriately named Dick’s.

WhoDat Gurl February 12, 2020 - 5:25 PM - 5:25 PM

Close that hideous Lucky’s and put a Sprouts in the Kmart location.

Friedman’s has several great stores in the Sonoma/Santa Rosa area, and we all know that OSH reboot isn’t going to last (yet again).

I’m all for a Total Wine & More!!

Old school concord February 12, 2020 - 5:52 PM - 5:52 PM

Sad to see go. Old concord

Exit 12A February 12, 2020 - 6:13 PM - 6:13 PM

Affordable housing project for seniors. They don’t drive much. They’re quiet and they’ll shop local stores.

Commercial use? A Trader Joe’s would be ideal.. a Peete’s, sandwich shop, FedEx store, and other small shops.

FPN February 12, 2020 - 11:31 PM - 11:31 PM

Senior citizen housing a good idea. But fish n chips (long john silvers) would be good.

CBarry February 12, 2020 - 6:24 PM - 6:24 PM

Sprouts! Sprouts! Sprouts! Say it with me! Sprouts! Sprouts! Sprouts! (I realize this will never happen with a Lucky a block away, but a girl can dream :))

Freda S February 18, 2020 - 3:10 PM - 3:10 PM

SPROUTS!!!!! Hate the parking at the WC location.

SuzieQ February 12, 2020 - 6:41 PM - 6:41 PM

Bring Back Beverly’s!!!, Michael’s is nice but I need my Fabric Fix. The reinvented toy store TRU Kids would be great, including the giraffe.

Fred February 12, 2020 - 6:41 PM - 6:41 PM

Haha, yea, luxury apartments immediately adjacent to and above a homeless camp.

Campdakota February 12, 2020 - 6:48 PM - 6:48 PM

Please … no more food establishments!!! Geez! We need Home Goods, JoAnns, Bed Bath & Beyond, Michael’s, Lowe’s, etc.

Teacher February 13, 2020 - 7:03 PM - 7:03 PM

I agree we need a hobby store like Micheals or Joannes over this way.

JustMe February 12, 2020 - 7:48 PM - 7:48 PM

Okay, so the space, in my opinion is too small for Target and even Walmart, but may be too big for most other tenants, even if they divide it into four. I was hoping for a food option if they sub-divided it, but it’s probably still too much space for most restaurants. It would have to be a popular destination.

Honestly, I think they could probably attract one or maybe even two leases right now if they’re lucky. I’m not sure it’s an ideal time to open a business.

Where they could be potentially successful is if they get an existing business to relocate there. It is a prime location.

It could work for DMV or Social Security. We really don’t need a post office. I can’t see housing of any kind there. Retail is tough right now. A hardware store would be interesting. Maybe a niche appliance or clothing store would work.

It might very well sit idle for a while. Look around, there’s tons of available space just about everywhere.

Futurist February 12, 2020 - 8:29 PM - 8:29 PM

Trade school!

Atticus Thraxx February 12, 2020 - 8:42 PM - 8:42 PM

That sucks. I kinda grew attached to that store over the years. My go to place for socks, underwear and sunscreen until I scored a can of ‘Tante Silva’s Heavy Duty Sunscreen’ (SPF 800) And go get lunch at Lisa’s Hot Dogs as long as I was there… Geez I sound old.
‘Shakes cane angrily’

Me February 12, 2020 - 9:41 PM - 9:41 PM

Ok so about that spf! No such thing as 800…. what you need is a physical block which is zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide! Sorry the aesthetician in me felt you should know! 😁. Also, I’m aborted with the naval station homeless idea!!!! I don’t mind the homeless that don’t cause issues but the fires in Newhall were enough for a lifetime! Getting my daughter up and out with two animals in the middle of the night because all o could see was flames 🔥 higher than the trees literally behind my house was too much! Safety is an issue.

FPN February 12, 2020 - 11:38 PM - 11:38 PM

I feel the same way about kmart. And I always went to Lisa’s after kmart also. I think it’s a law.

Atticus Thraxx February 13, 2020 - 7:06 AM - 7:06 AM

Sorry Me, can’t buy ‘Tante Silva’s Heavy Duty Sunscreen’ (SPF 800) from any retail entity. It’s offered by invitation only. And I may be understating the SPF as you have to put it on and take it off with a putty knife.

FPN February 12, 2020 - 11:49 PM - 11:49 PM

I feel the same way about kmart. And I always went to Lisa’s after kmart also. I think it’s a law.

Ayo February 14, 2020 - 12:44 AM - 12:44 AM

Definitely is in my book you gotta love Lisa’s

Rudy February 13, 2020 - 1:54 AM - 1:54 AM

Winco.

S February 13, 2020 - 12:39 PM - 12:39 PM

I’ll second that.

Janon February 13, 2020 - 7:02 AM - 7:02 AM

WHOLE FOODS

sam malone February 13, 2020 - 7:47 AM - 7:47 AM

A Sprouts or Winco would be great as their prices would make things much more competitive…remember the ole’ American way.

KittyWins February 13, 2020 - 10:45 AM - 10:45 AM

I would love an indoor playground for the kids, especially when the weather is really hot. The Jungle has turned into garbage and there’s no other indoor playground in the area. Meanwhile, Dublin/Pleasanton/Livermore has multiple options.

Concord Home Girl February 13, 2020 - 10:55 AM - 10:55 AM

If I remember Kmart sold a few food items such as milk, chips, soda etc.
So I don’t understand the big deal having a Target or a Trader Joe’s. I think Lucky’s is in fear of competition.

BagsFlyFree February 13, 2020 - 11:10 AM - 11:10 AM

Concord DMV #2 and a new post office which will replace the Treat/Clayton location. The more business that leave Bel Air, the better.

BFF Out!

Fil February 13, 2020 - 12:45 PM - 12:45 PM

I say we put a bar and dance floor like they had in Texas wasn’t that Gilleys…
They have six or seven bands playing at the same time …. six or seven different bars , dance floor , fighting floor , hook up room.
Indoor playground for mother’s who want to party but can’t because they have kids…
Drop off at 8:00 and pick up at 2:30 …
Maybe a MMA arena that would be bad ass….
That way Concord P D. set up there D U I checkpoint in the parking lot it’ll cut down on the cost of moving at all over the place….

D February 13, 2020 - 3:05 PM - 3:05 PM

We had an ice skating rink in Sun Vally Mall and a Theater there as well. Why don’t they put an ice skating rink at that location. Something for the kids to do.

Warbirds45 February 13, 2020 - 3:10 PM - 3:10 PM

Hopefully the building will subdivide into 3 to 4 20,000 to 30,000 square foot retail spaces.
It will be interesting to see if they could possibly get the Lucky store to relocate.
Someone mentioned Target and Trader Joe’s….Got my vote.

chuckie the troll February 13, 2020 - 4:22 PM - 4:22 PM

Why not build more housing on this site? Retail is so 20th Century and our traffic isn’t at complete gridlock yet. I’m sure we can fit 200,000 or 300,000 into Concord if we just try harder.
