That picture has to be at least from 1960 or more recently because there’s a Corvair in the picture, and they weren’t made before 1960.

james February 6, 2020 - 3:16 PM - 3:16 PM

I was just about to make that same comment..They did that before with pics of kids dancing in about ’62,and said it was from the year 1950.

Dawg February 6, 2020 - 4:27 PM - 4:27 PM

I saw that too, but the ’60 Corvair made it’s debut in October, 1959.

There’s a 1962 Ford Falcon on Willow Pass Road. That means picture maybe from late 1961 or 1962.

Grants, Rhodes, Woolworth, LOL…
Man, I’m old…

Love this photo!!! This is the Park N Shop I remember from the 60s…the stores were great, the place was clean … loved Woolworth’s and Grants! I miss the Park N Shop sign!!!!! Bring it back!!!!!

Sign from Above February 6, 2020 - 3:02 PM - 3:02 PM

Yep. Back when Concord was a safe community without the thralls of gangs and low-life. That’s what they attracted and now that’s what they have! Too bad….

Kirkwood February 6, 2020 - 3:16 PM - 3:16 PM

In later years the tower became illegal due to the new City sign ordnance so the owners removed the name and rotating top, installed neon lighting and called it a sculpture which made the structure legal.

B.T.W. is that a ’58 Chevy making the left turn?

The Fearless Spectator February 6, 2020 - 5:02 PM - 5:02 PM

That is indeed a ‘58 Chevy, and behind it heading in the other direction is a 1962-1964 Ford Falcon.

I agree, miss the old shopping center the way it was (and don’t miss all the stop lights they’ve added). My Dad worked at the JC Penney store on the end where Burger King is now. Everytime I go there it makes me sad to see how it has gone downhill.

Gittyup February 6, 2020 - 11:12 PM - 11:12 PM

What is the guy doing on Willow Pass across from the Park N Shop sign straddling the double line? It doesn’t look like he’s turning left or right, just driving down the middle of the street.

In the foreground there’s a Corvair parked behind what looks like a Buick Roadmaster.

Shoulda Coulda February 6, 2020 - 2:58 PM - 2:58 PM

Driving mini tractors at King Norman’s Wonderland!

No Excuses February 6, 2020 - 4:18 PM - 4:18 PM

So, it might have been early 60’s…Picky Picky 🙂 Life was good…..

MrsP February 6, 2020 - 4:25 PM - 4:25 PM

Wherever my family returned to Concord from, we all strained and wriggled to be the first to spot the sign! It was always such a relief to know we were “home”.

Chester E. Kitty February 6, 2020 - 8:27 PM - 8:27 PM

We used to do the same thing … you could see the sign from just about every road and freeway around back then…

FPN February 6, 2020 - 6:52 PM - 6:52 PM

I was given the P from the park part of the sign. It was huge and eventually got rid of it.

Chester E. Kitty February 6, 2020 - 8:26 PM - 8:26 PM

What???!!! Lucky you!!!! I would have LOVED to have one of the letters. Wonder where they are now ….

scott February 6, 2020 - 9:09 PM - 9:09 PM

Where did the P end up?

Silva February 6, 2020 - 9:15 PM - 9:15 PM

Oh wow! How cool. How big was it? How’d you get rid of it?🙂

Gititogether February 6, 2020 - 9:06 PM - 9:06 PM

Ah…so clean, so punkless

FPN February 7, 2020 - 1:41 AM - 1:41 AM

This sounds funny but the P was cool. It was as tall as a one story house if I remember correctly. It took up alot of space. I gave it back to my friend who originally gave it to me. I dont know where it is now.

Chick’s Donuts must be the only original business left there. Maybe a Dry Cleaners too.

Rick February 7, 2020 - 9:11 AM - 9:11 AM

Love that no foreign automobiles

Silva February 7, 2020 - 12:17 PM - 12:17 PM

The sign was amazing, I miss it, The structure looks naked and sad. It grew on us soon after we moved here. They should’ve grandfathered it in. I imagine the city’s idea supercool camp was “tacky” in the City Council’s opinion at the time, but giant upended knitting needles were great. Maybe the shopping center should’ve offered to make them a large plaque with their names on it to be displayed prominently on or near the structure.
