Congressmen DeSaulnier and Stauber Introduce Bill to Protect Student Athletes from Concussions

Congressmen Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) and Pete Stauber (MN-08) announced the introduction of the bipartisan Protecting Student Athletes from Concussions Act (H.R. 5611), a bill to promote awareness of sports-related concussions and create comprehensive, evidence-based concussion response strategies.

“Concussions are an often silent health condition that can have serious, long-term consequences and sadly with still-developing brains, younger athletes are at greater risk from sports-related concussions than college or professional athletes. These injuries can jeopardize students’ future ability to compete in sports, their academic performance, and their mental health. Together with a community of schools and medical professionals, we can make real progress toward protecting our student athletes,” said Congressman DeSaulnier.

The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that as many as 1.9 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur every year among people under age 18 in the United States.

H.R. 5611 would bring all states in line with evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of sports concussions as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Neurology.

More specifically, this bill would require states that receive federal education funding to form concussion management teams and develop concussion guidelines as well as ensure that students who have concussions receive the appropriate academic support.

How about introducing a bill to determine why politicians are so narcissistic. I’m sure that would be well received by their constituents.

Rick January 18, 2020 - 6:58 PM - 6:58 PM

The end of football. Not a bad thing its been commercialized to the point of being ridiculous 10 minutes of play for 50 minutes of commercials. Most football fans I know are morons anyway.

james January 18, 2020 - 10:57 PM - 10:57 PM

I mentioned to a football fan that football is all commercials and he said”yes, but they are very good commercials…’

Rollo Tomasi January 19, 2020 - 11:17 AM - 11:17 AM

You don’t know many football fans. Maybe you should get out more.

james January 19, 2020 - 3:01 PM - 3:01 PM

My point was,Rick is right, and why would I want to know football fans,if I want to talk to someone with an IQ of 80,I just go on FB

Cautiously Informed January 19, 2020 - 3:47 PM - 3:47 PM

Yes pro football is pretty much a joke, these days. It’s basically a children’s game played by extravagantly overplayed entertainers.

Rollo Tomasi January 19, 2020 - 4:33 PM - 4:33 PM

I didn’t know you can talk to someone on Facebook. Must be magical.

The Mamba January 20, 2020 - 2:33 PM - 2:33 PM

It’s a shame you feel that way, football has taught millions of kids important life lessons and given people great memories.

The Fearless Spectator January 18, 2020 - 7:17 PM - 7:17 PM

OK, this is just a rumor:

California local government is looking at issuing complementary safety helmets for BART fair evasion gate jumpers. The Governor was insistent that no fair evaders receive concussions while on his watch.

Noj January 19, 2020 - 1:49 AM - 1:49 AM

It would be “fair” if thy just paid their “fare.”

PLEEEEASE!!! Don’t give him any ideas!! Given his recent track record, this is not out of the questions!

Nature Lover January 19, 2020 - 12:35 PM - 12:35 PM

Good one Fearless!!

Ilovepopcorn January 18, 2020 - 8:12 PM - 8:12 PM

Well… what is taking you all so long to spray the ugly negativity towards Mark? He only improves our community. This issue is the wrong real elephant in the room. People hate to think their beloved game of football is a dangerous sport. You have the big 49r game tomorrow too. Yes we need protection of younger developing brains in younger kids. I say what about adults too! There are many instances of brain injuries and even diseases created by blows to the head in football. Thank you Mark

james January 18, 2020 - 11:03 PM - 11:03 PM

There is not 1 thing a leftist/liberal can do to improve the community, name 1 thing that he’s done, not proposed, and what were the positive results??
NOTHING!!
He’s fluff,and “look,I think I’m trying”
You asked for negative comments about him,but its a waste of time,it has to be listened to and also with some intelligence.
%99 of comments anywhere about him are negative.
The look on his face in his photo tells it all, there’s nothing there.
He looks like he waiting for the men in the white suits to come.

@ Popcorn

“He only improves our community.” Total BS!

The only thing Mark has done during this term is fight the endless fight to derail a sitting President that was voting into office fairly (whether you like Trump or not – and I’m certainly not his biggest fan). Mark has done absolutely nothing for the community. Not that I know anything about Stauber, but I would bet Mark is just adding his name to someone elses work. He’s like Boxer when she was in office. She never produced anything of value on her own. They just grab the coat tails of others. Mark should be an embarrassment to anyone that voted him in!

ZZ January 19, 2020 - 7:50 AM - 7:50 AM

Marky is not part of the Think Tank. He doesn’t have the capability to think past a 9 th grade level. He’s told to agree with everything he’s told by the Democrats. He’s a good little doggy.

Yogurt January 19, 2020 - 8:48 AM - 8:48 AM

Amazing. The people here spew such hatred and vile commentary but nothing to back it up.

There is only so much he can do to change laws.

I think he’s a little bit of a run with the crowd without being given a shot to stand out but at least he voted correctly on impeachment.

It amazes me that people so vehemently spew the false talking points of a TV network that has said over and over gin it has no obligation to be truthful.

Cautiously Informed January 19, 2020 - 9:50 AM - 9:50 AM

Improves our community? He sure does; the criminal, welfare recipient and illegal alien communities.

Cautiously Informed January 19, 2020 - 9:59 AM - 9:59 AM

Yogurt,
Nothing to back it up?
Have you taken a look at what’s going on in California lately? – Like crime, education, roads and infrastructure, taxes, and so on? Some view people view and analyze things objectively and with logic. Some people only know to view things according to their emotions. It’s obvious which group you are a part of.

Rollo Tomasi January 19, 2020 - 11:20 AM - 11:20 AM

“He only improves our community”

This idea very well may be good for the community, but if your statement was true, there would be much less vitriol for the other crap he wastes our time and tax dollars on.

Rollo Tomasi January 19, 2020 - 11:23 AM - 11:23 AM

“I think he’s a little bit of a run with the crowd without being given a shot to stand out but at least he voted correctly on impeachment.”

Sure. Otherwise, princess Nancy might stop telling him what to think.

“There is only so much he can do to change laws.”

Ummmmm Yogurt……He’s a Senator. They write the laws! Apparently both you and Mark have forgotten that point!

“Amazing. The people here spew such hatred and vile commentary but nothing to back it up.”

That’s the problem Yogurt. There is nothing! He hasn’t done anything!

james January 18, 2020 - 11:07 PM - 11:07 PM

PS
people are tired of talking about him, just like most here cringe when they hear Barry Sortero’s alias

Jojo Potato January 19, 2020 - 2:26 PM - 2:26 PM

Barry Sortero is a well known fake story invented and published by right wing losers. Are you one of those, James? Or did you just look this up and decide to use it?

james January 19, 2020 - 2:58 PM - 2:58 PM

its his foreign student name with his photo ID as visitor to America because he wasnt born here and his presidency was illegal, are you the only one in California that doesn’t know this? You really need to get out of the damp basement. His photo ID is all over the internet that you live on.His alias is Barack Obummer

james January 19, 2020 - 3:03 PM - 3:03 PM

Barry was invented by the same guy that lied and became POTUS to try but fail at bringing down western society, and few hold outs cant seem to get their pea brain right.

james January 19, 2020 - 3:53 PM - 3:53 PM

why would the right need to make up a story?they can win and have won fairly with truth. We are not like you,oh confused one.If you want to anger a conservative, lie to them,if you want to anger a liberal, tell them the truth.

Jojo Potato January 19, 2020 - 5:09 PM - 5:09 PM

So James thinks Mr. Trump was elected by the truth. Then why did he insist on lying about the inaugural crowd? Despite clear pictures that it was less than the previous POTUS. The first day on the job and the stream of lies began. Sorry James you have no credibility at all.

james January 19, 2020 - 6:02 PM - 6:02 PM

Its not my credibility in question professor, its the millions of people that voted for him in 2016 and again and even more this time in 2020.The whole country is suspect and “a Russian bot” if they dont agree with liberalism. You’re just angry, and you’ve run out of response with any meat on theOh and it was and is CNN showing pics of something else, when Trump has overflowing rallies. What does Bernies get?200-300?You’re just mad,and it’s only going to get worse for you this year.

Bill Cutting January 19, 2020 - 8:45 AM - 8:45 AM

With all the problems we have in the state this is what you focus on?

james January 19, 2020 - 9:00 AM - 9:00 AM

He does nothing but brown nosing “look everyone,I swear i’m doing something that somebody somewhere will like”

FPN January 19, 2020 - 11:12 AM - 11:12 AM

All I know is the quality of living in Concord or California is not as good as it use to be. Higher taxs, homelessness, addicts everywhere, crime, over populated schools and bad roads. You don’t need charts or graphs to figure out we have a big problem.

The Fearless Spectator January 19, 2020 - 6:12 PM - 6:12 PM

Overpopulation is the root of it, and these other problems are a symptom. Why? California pretty much has the best weather in the U.S. Therefore population density will continue until it looks like Monaco, the most densely populated area in the world. People only leave for two reasons: They get priced out, or they can’t stand the close quarters. For those that worry about gentrification, it’s assured as a function of those two reasons. You are correct, no charts and graphs needed.

sign from above January 20, 2020 - 11:24 AM - 11:24 AM

@ Fearless

Most of the people I know have left the state because of the politics. They just couldn’t stand to watch it any more. The high cost of living was also a contributing factor.

Mika January 20, 2020 - 8:58 AM - 8:58 AM

Boy did this thread go off topic!

The Mamba January 20, 2020 - 2:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Did either of them play sports? Everyone here jumped straight to football, there’s plenty of sports where concussions happen.

Newellian January 20, 2020 - 3:12 PM - 3:12 PM

How about a study to find out when the brain damage happened to our elected officials?

Lamont January 20, 2020 - 4:40 PM - 4:40 PM

Soccer is the leading sport for head injuries and concussions. Cheerleading is next for back and neck along with concussions MDUSD has had a policy for over twenty years that any student athlete who has a head injury, loss of consciousness, neck, back, or joing injury has to be cleared in writing by the primary care physician and the parent. I know that was a while back when my dad was coaching so it may have changed but it was a good rule back then and still is.
