35 years ago I married the most wonderful and beautiful girl in the world. On our wedding night she told me I was her only one. Today she clarified that all her others were 8’s and above.

Ricardoh January 17, 2020 at 7:45 PM

After thirty five years you are liable to hear anything. Hang in there it even gets better. Wait until you reach over fifty years. Happy Anniversary.

My wife ask if she was the only 10 I slept with. When I said yes she was so excited till I told all the others kept me up all night. That’s when the fight started

Hanne Jeppesen January 17, 2020 at 10:18 PM

One a more serious note, a few weeks ago a man in a wheelchair was killed crossing Willow Pass Road and Parkside at night. The other night driving home from work on Willow Pass Road, I noticed as I was getting closer to a crosswalk, (don’t remember if it was Parkside or the one further down, something moving, fortunately I was not going very fast, as I got closer I saw a man crossing the street, he was wearing dark clothes, had on a dark hoodie and pushed a shopping cart that was dark as well, he was crossing for red light or outside the crosswalk, I feel for pedestrians that gets hit, but in instances like this, the person crossing the street is being very reckless. If I had gone a little faster, if it had been rainy or foggy I’m not sure I would have notice him in time. By the way I rarely speed on road around town, but man do. I honked my horn at him, which obviously made him made, because he turned around and flipped me a profanity, I was just trying to convey, be a little more careful, but I guess he didn’t see it that way.

Gittyup January 18, 2020 at 6:23 PM

Don’t you think it is kind of rude to honk your horn at someone who appears to be struggling and could quite possibly be mentally unstable? Use your brakes, not your horn.

ZZ January 19, 2020 at 2:09 PM

Wow, honking your horn at a pedestrian only means one thing to a pedestrian…hurry up. How rude.

The Fearless Spectator January 18, 2020 at 9:31 AM

I was reading that some parents won’t let their children watch the Peanuts TV specials because Charlie Brown is called “Blockhead”. Apparently name calling is really discouraged at the kindergarten level. Now turn on the news and our elected officials have sunk below the kindergarten level.

It’s a really peculiar time for our society. Hopefully leadership by example will make a comeback.

Dawg January 18, 2020 at 10:19 AM

Kids today would never be able to handle the Three Stooges or the Little Rascals.

Justifiable languor January 18, 2020 at 10:55 AM

The problem with coddling children is, they won’t develop the skills to handle diversity. Hence, overreaction to real or perceived unfairness.

Jojo Potato January 18, 2020 at 11:48 AM

Kids today would never watch Little Rascals or Three Stooges. They would find something else immediately. And I agree, those old shows were stupid and not funny.

james January 18, 2020 at 2:27 PM

Jojo youre the only one saying those shows are stupid and not funny. It looks like youre right if children like you don’t like day youll get cable tv and realize how wrong you are

Gittyup January 18, 2020 at 3:54 PM

“Blockhead” is a thoroughly apt description of some people …maybe not Charlie Brown. I believe it’s likely Lucy who calls him that. But, that’s the point. It’s merely her opinion. Children might as well find out early that not everybody is going to admire their intellect, otherwise they’ll be in for a rude awakening the day someone calls them even worse. And, that someone might even be one of their college professors … I’ve seen it happen. I don’t see any benefit from over protecting a child from the real world. It’s just another facet of child abuse to do so.

WC Resident January 20, 2020 at 10:51 AM

@Jojo Potato – Try channeling your 11 year old self. You mention at times a high school age grandson. Ask him what 11 year olds tend to like.

Years ago I talked with a middle school teacher who was near retirement. She said that kids at that age have tended to be the same throughout her career. The things that 11 year olds were interested in and found funny were in 1963 were roughly the same as in 2003. I imagine the same is true of today’s 11 year olds.

FPN January 18, 2020 at 10:43 AM

Not that I think name calling is acceptable but when I was a kid it only made us tougher. No snowflakes.

Silva January 18, 2020 at 11:53 AM

Though it may make some kids tougher, there’s a wide range of responses to name calling (bullying).

Where was this photo taken from? It looks like the Walnut Creek area but I can’t figure out where the pond or whatever it is in the foreground is located.

The photos are from which is a senior living complex that’s being constructed in Shadelands behind the The Orchards shopping mall.

Kentucky Derby January 19, 2020 at 6:54 AM

WC Resident – Were the photos taken at The Gardens of Heather Farms? It’s the first place I thought of, and when I went to the Viamonte website, The Garden of Heather Farms is listed under “nearby attractions.”

Kirkwood January 19, 2020 at 9:51 AM

Looks like the pond that terminates Marsh Creek alongside the old Marsh Creek road where it makes a sharp left turn. The straight part continues as Camino Diablo. The view is looking west towards the back side of Mt. Diablo. There is a historical site marker (Marsh House) there.

To Do List January 19, 2020 at 10:09 AM

Yes, Kirkwood called it. This is part of a stock photo from Gettyimages and you can see it using the appropriate google search terms of Mt Diablo and lake and find similar images with term brentwood lake mt diablo images.

WC Resident January 19, 2020 at 7:12 PM

Thank you Kirkwood. I’ve been meaning to take a drive over there to take a walk around Marsh Creek State Historic Park and to take a look at the house.

I am doing OK. Thanks for asking. I have had support of a lot of friends and family.

Sideline January 19, 2020 at 9:16 AM

What is it with all the potholes in Concord?

Used to have fairly good roads in this city, whats up, city council?

Justifiable languor January 19, 2020 at 9:40 AM

I agree!

Kirkwood January 19, 2020 at 10:51 AM

The rainy season is pothole season. The patch crew can only use a cold patch material to temporarily fill the pothole when the ground is wet. When summer arrives, the patch (if it still exists) is supposed to be dug out and replaced with a hot patch material.

Sideline January 19, 2020 at 1:55 PM

@kirkwood I am not talking about the expected “pothole season”, been living here since the early 80’s!
I have seen a steady decrease in regular street maintenance here in town.

Justifiable languor January 19, 2020 at 9:33 AM

The Intouchables , 2011 version. Netflix movie.
Very good. Light hearted story about a quadriplegic man who hires a man just released from prison to help him as an aide. Funny, heartwarming and taken from a true story. They remained friends for life.

I want to see the new version now to see if it is as good. Watch this one first.

Justifiable languor January 19, 2020 at 12:52 PM

Watch the 2011 one first. Sheesh!

Justifiable languor January 19, 2020 at 11:03 AM

Oh. It is subtitled. Normally I find this annoying, but got over it quickly enough.

As an aside, I am trying to clean up the typos. Spell check has been inserting creative wording that skews content. Terribly sorry.

Once again, the Tinted Windshields in Claycord has gotten out of hand, being unable to see another motorist whether in a parking lot or an intersection how are you supposed to know what they are doing???? Of course, Nobody uses turn signals.
Do the Police need a “Grant” to start doing something about this?

“Non-reflective tint is allowed 4 inches at the Top of a Windshield only”.

Jojo Potato January 19, 2020 at 12:42 PM

When I asked the guy at the tinting shop on Concord Blvd, he said: “Don’t worry, if you get a ticket, I’ll pay it and redo your windshield too”. I guess that tells you how often this is actually enforced,

Turn n Burn January 20, 2020 at 6:33 AM

Jojo, what place on Concord Blvd. are you talking about?

Jojo Potato January 20, 2020 at 12:00 PM

Sorry, I meant Concord Avenue. You should be able to find it. What silly city names a blvd and and ave after themselves? Walnut Creek has got the same problem. Walnut Blvd is nearer downtown and Walnut Ave is out Ygnacio.

james January 20, 2020 at 1:54 PM

over 100 years ago when they were naming steets, you knew what city it would lead you to if you got on Pacheco, blvd,or concord ave,it was “the road to- ” type of names, and it made it easier to know where you were going if you didn’t have a map or were just arriving for .What city names a street after themselves?A smart city, there was no GPS back then, child.

any details yet? not seeing any news coverage…

To Do List January 19, 2020 at 9:56 PM

Initial reports (so may not be all that accurate) is that witnesses said person with gun was a St. Mary’s student and the situation was some kind of domestic dispute, so was not a robbery sort of thing.

Anon January 20, 2020 at 8:34 AM

24 / 680 has coverage, it should be a Hate crime but we all know everyone fears John Burris for that.
Hopefully the Suspect (who has self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face) did not experience any Disrespect when arrested.

Kentucky Derby January 19, 2020 at 9:39 PM

The suspect is a black male known to local law enforcement, and according to another news organization – a student at St, Mary’s. All three were shot (including the suspect) and the suspect is in custody.

TV (channel not noted) had a news blurb saying that Benicia is entered in a contest to earn money for town facelift and repairs. I would like to help by casting my vote for them. Do any of you have more details re the voting process?

Antler January 20, 2020 at 12:47 AM

…… oops, hit “submit” before I was finished.
My confusion arises because TV said one thing, but online information says that way back in early 2019, Benicia was ALREADY a semi finalist in the small town Main Street America Beautification contest and that the grand prize winner was to have been revealed June 3rd, 2019.
(And no, I just don’t want to spend Tuesday morning talking with agencies, etc., over in Benicia, so does anyone in Claycord already have solid info?)

Today is MLK Day. If I hear that “I had a dream” speech one more time I think I will scream!

Jojo Potato January 20, 2020 at 12:49 PM

Did you ever have a dream? Think about it.

james January 20, 2020 at 1:56 PM

The speech that sealed his fate.By maentioning “we must rise up” the FBI saw this as an an”uprising’ he scared all the wrong people, just like JFK, talking too much got him killed.

Silva January 20, 2020 at 3:54 PM

It certainly is oft repeated, isn’t it? Has any other speech through history ever been repeated as often as that one? None I know about. When I was younger I heard Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address spoken of frequently, and I remember the first sentence pretty well. But each time I hear MLK’s “I have a dream..” speech it seems as relevant as the first time. More so really, I was fresh and naive then. Listening to it still gives me chills, and watching his highly emotionally charged delivery adds a whole different dimension to it.

KAD January 20, 2020 at 11:09 AM

All right, I really have been missing Janis Mara’s traffic column. So today I was remembering the time she asked us to name our favorite truck songs (which morphed into great reports of car and in-general traveling recordings as well).
Today Pandora helped me find “The Best of C.W. McCall” c/d (and from there, some others); and it is a heap of fun to listen to them, especially if you enjoy patter-songs:

*On “The Best of C.W. McCall” is one of my favorites, “Convoy”.
Also, “Old Time Filler-Up and Keep on a’Truckin’ Cafe”

* On “C.W. McCall’s Greatest Hits” is “Round the World with the Rubber Duck”. Also, “Four Wheel Drive”.

* On the C/D he burned with Mannheim Steam Roller,
(C/D “American Spirit”), there is “Wolf Creek Pass”.

Cowellian January 21, 2020 at 9:11 AM

I miss Janis, too.
I’ll throw in a vote for Jerry Reed’s “Eastbound and Down” from Smokie and the Bandit. And I’ll second “Convoy.”

Antler January 22, 2020 at 3:31 AM

Thanks for the tip, Cowellian! I listened to “Eastbound and Down” (plus others) and especially like Jerry Reed’s voice. He also has super back-up musicians!

Kentucky Derby January 21, 2020 at 9:05 AM

I miss Janis Mara’s traffic column too. Very informative column.

I have to wonder why Meghan Markle thought Canada was a good place to hide out. Every time she opens her wallet her mother in law is looking back at her. ( the queen is on Canadian currency ).

Swing and a miss. The queen isn’t her mother in law. Don’t quit your day job.

Jojo Potato January 22, 2020 at 9:23 AM

Just got my bill from Astound announcing a $10 increase across a half dozen categories beginning next month. This is about the same time as last year’s major jump. Guess it’s time to go down to the office and whine about the prices again. In the past they have adjusted my bill $20-25 by extending promotions, etc.

Silva January 23, 2020 at 11:53 AM

Comcast does that every 2 years, but I whine on the phone. They come up with a promo rate by which I will pay “only” $10 more per mo, get fewer channels, and must sign on to a new 2 year contract.

HappyPappy January 23, 2020 at 9:43 AM

Finally…….something important!!!!

Major League Baseball will test computer plate umpires during spring training but will not use the system for decisions in any exhibition games.
The Major League Baseball Umpires Association agreed last month to cooperate and assist if Commissioner Rob Manfred decides to utilize the system at the major league level.

“We will be running the automated balls and strikes system only in test mode but will not actually use it to call balls and strikes in spring training games,” the commissioner’s office said in a statement. “It will be available in nine spring training facilities for later use during the Florida State League season.”

Plate umpires hear the computerized ball/strike calls via earpieces. The human umps decide on checked swings and other plays.

I hate it when a bad call goes against my GIANTS. Other teams…..meh!

Jojo Potato January 23, 2020 at 11:31 AM

I hope MLB is watching what’s happening in other sports. Two weeks ago English fans supporting Crystal Palace unfurled banners reading “Killing the passion” ( among other things ) all against English Premier leagues use of VAR. Essentially an on field replay. One fan was incensed by the way the fans (like him) in the stands had to sit on their hands while those losers at home watched replays. And how about the NFL? I’d rather go down to Martinez and watch a random court case than those referees. How about all refs with a mic, just like in court? Thanks for the chance to vent, Mr. Pappy!
