No way! How can this possibly be true in the tough on crime state of California?

Sick of it December 4, 2019 - 8:16 AM - 8:16 AM

Not surprising at all. Criminals have nothing to worry about in this state.

bayslashers December 4, 2019 - 8:20 AM - 8:20 AM

“Coincidence”

-Liberals

Commonsensenor December 4, 2019 - 8:21 AM - 8:21 AM

We all know (that live here) what has happened to California. Moving on… I have a sneaking suspicion things are about to change. Democrats representing California have a HUGE “XX” on their foreheads, and as we just witnessed from Kamila dropping out, are “un-electable”. Our great nation’s people, thanks to the political corruption and idiocy of our voters here, want ZERO to do with ANYTHING California related right now. Now we just received another Golden State Award – “Porch Pirate Capitol”.

Let’s see if the Dems do an about face on crime here shortly. I mean, we can all have “Hope” right?

Robert December 4, 2019 - 11:55 AM - 11:55 AM

It doesn’t matter how bad it gets in California. The Democrats will never change!

Cher December 4, 2019 - 10:30 PM - 10:30 PM

common, you dont have enough MONEY to put all the thieves in prison so stop belly aching about political parties. And if you thought 20 people would still be in the race in November of 2020 you have missed a few History classes in High school. -Tell them to pay better wages, make sure every education/school is equal in its ability to teach-its equipment-its programs-level the playing field (!), make sure there are two parent families, get families off the streets and into housing, and for Pete’s sake get them off drugs. The bottom line here is these people are tweeking when they cruise your neighborhood and selling stuff for thier drugs. You can thank big pharma for a lot of that. But your taxes COULD be paying for educations that are equal in all neighborhoods instead of prisons for them that costs you ten times a college education. So the people who need to “change” are apparently the reps.

Ilovepopcorn December 4, 2019 - 8:21 AM - 8:21 AM

Our society is going crazy. People feel they are entitled to our stuff.
Poor idiots.

Bad Nombre December 4, 2019 - 8:30 AM - 8:30 AM

This can be put your advantage. Box up your junk and just wait for the “trash collectors” to schlep it off.

Just sayin’.

T-rex December 4, 2019 - 8:31 AM - 8:31 AM

Thank the voters for that problem. No consequences. Here’s your ticket. Have a nice day! See you again tomorrow!

JJ December 4, 2019 - 8:44 AM - 8:44 AM

Doesn’t California have more people?
Had a neighbor who would get at least three to four packages a day. Plus groceries delivered weekly.

Jeff December 4, 2019 - 8:51 AM - 8:51 AM

Gavin Newsom and The Pirate Crew. Both steal from you.

108RS

ChuckStir December 4, 2019 - 8:52 AM - 8:52 AM

You are not home, you have a package delivered and left outside your door for who knows how long, leaving a package unattended is just an invite. Maybe have it delivered to a neighbor or a friend who will be home that day, maybe look into other options, Maybe take the time to actually shop like we all did years ago, you might find you enjoy it. Convivence comes with a price.

Jeff December 4, 2019 - 9:28 AM - 9:28 AM

Maybe people shouldn’t be criminals, regardless of their education or financial status.

108RS

Turn n Burn December 4, 2019 - 10:21 AM - 10:21 AM

I hate shopping now a days. The cashiers are young, rude and couldn’t care less about you or their job. They just want you in and out and get paid. I can shop online and have it delivered to my house the next day. I can track it, and find out when it will come. If you’re to naïve to not be cautious about a package on your door then it’s your fault. But… just like Jeff said, people shouldn’t be criminals!!

Frank December 4, 2019 - 11:17 AM - 11:17 AM

No it’s not an “invite.”. Only a person who has criminal intent would think so. The fact is that the ruling party in California sees criminals as an important part of their base.

T-rex December 4, 2019 - 2:09 PM - 2:09 PM

Even when I’m home they don’t always knock so could be hours before checking the porch.

Cher December 4, 2019 - 10:36 PM - 10:36 PM

ChuckStir you make too much sense! Half the fun for them was having someone ELSE to blame! I live on a thoroughfare and my neighbor gets packages tossed 3 feet from the street (15 feet from a stop sign ) and no one ever messes with them. Maybe these people live in bad neighborhoods, lol

Gittyup December 5, 2019 - 6:45 AM - 6:45 AM

If you’re going to have a package delivered to a neighbor, be sure and check with them first. A neighbor had a package delivered to me without asking. I thought it had been delivered in error. I couldn’t lift it — it was too big and heavy. I couldn’t ‘rouse anyone at their house to come and get it, and I didn’t want to chance it getting stolen from my porch. I called who I thought had delivered it, and while they hadn’t, the guy, very kindly, took it over to the neighbors house where it sat for three days on their porch while they were, apparently, out of town. I seriously had to ask myself why they had it delivered to me. I hardly know them … and I’m going to keep it that way.

Badger December 4, 2019 - 9:06 AM - 9:06 AM

Recycle your Amazon boxes. Just fill them with junk or stuff you would toss in the garbage can. Put it back on your porch.

Kari December 4, 2019 - 10:43 AM - 10:43 AM

Great idea!

woody December 4, 2019 - 9:07 AM - 9:07 AM

I bet CA has the highest delivery rate also.

Randy December 4, 2019 - 9:08 AM - 9:08 AM

Snowflakes sit back and blame someone else or be the victim. Get a package drop box and anchor it.

Ricardoh December 4, 2019 - 9:15 AM - 9:15 AM

I have a suggestion. Everyone keep a box on their porch with dog dirt or the contents of your cat box. If you can find a rattlesnake that would be cool especially if the pirate opens the box in the car.

I would really like to know what punishment these thieves are getting when caught? Maybe triple the time and start posting what will happen to them when caught. We are again being let down by our leftist government. This should not be perpetrated on us. We deserve better law enforcement.

Old-school guy December 4, 2019 - 2:11 PM - 2:11 PM

Just read a story on the NBC News wire about a family that was victim to porch pirates. They then put a box of dirty diapers on the poach. Porch pirates took it. The sweet smell of revenge(maybe not sweet smelling in this case).

Cher December 4, 2019 - 10:33 PM - 10:33 PM

You got ONE thing right. Your law enforcement. If you have video and your law enforcement isn’t willing to look at it, see your city council. You aren’t victims here. Everyone wants to blame the law and poitical parties but ANY party will do the right thing when you lobby them with the problem and prove it. Oh, sorry, that makes too much sense and so many here are just into complaining. ENDLESSLY.

Gittyup December 5, 2019 - 7:16 AM - 7:16 AM

@Cher I’ve had my life threatened, my property vandalized, and a stalker. When I began reporting these things to the police, they told me they couldn’t do anything without a video. I took a photo into the police of the guy who was pounding on one of my exterior walls. Nothing happened. Report it to the City Council? That’s a joke, right? In typical mafioso fashion, a Clayton City Council member said publicly they were going to “make it ugly” for people who didn’t agree with them. If that’s the way they are running the city, you better believe I don’t agree with them. As far as I’m concerned, it could very well be employees of the city at the direction of the City Council who are harassing me. It’s just that kind of backwater mentality that prevails among these City Council members who have been in office way too long. You are strictly on your own.

Sam Malone December 4, 2019 - 9:19 AM - 9:19 AM

Who in their right minds is surprised by this. There are no penalties for crimes committed in California as the liberals and Democrats need all of the felons votes to out weigh the voters who still have common sense. Plus we must continue to support the illegals and those in OAC’s crew along with Newsome who “don’t want to work” as they see us the hard working old school generation continue to support them.
I hope commonsensor is correct as I am sick of the crap that we have to put up with in this state. Saw a petition in Brentwood to recall Newsome. Let’s get one rolling here in Concord.

RANDOM TASK December 4, 2019 - 9:31 AM - 9:31 AM

oh but wait the dem voter always blisters us with how great this states economy and political structure is and how left it is for our betterment

I mean you get to choose to be what ever you want
you don’t have to recognize a large steel plate covering a hole in the road
you don’t have to fear the dreaded plastic straw
you pay 8 dollars to cross a bridge and now new toll roads are being put in with your increased taxes meant to fix the roads lol

you believe politicians are working for you lol probably can stop there

chuckie the troll December 4, 2019 - 9:32 AM - 9:32 AM

“Justice-Reform’, as in making theft of less than $950 a misdemeanor, created this ‘opportunity’. Now if those caught were immediately caned, and then taken to jail, I’ll bet this epidemic would end. Until then, the Amazon is still a jungle and there are plenty of predators.

Rob December 4, 2019 - 9:45 AM - 9:45 AM

And yet so many Conservative States have a far higher violent crime rate than California.

I’ll take packages stolen over people killed any day.

Noj December 4, 2019 - 10:31 AM - 10:31 AM

Rob, heard of this one?
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” – Goebbels

Alaska, New Mexico, and Nevada have the highest violent crime rates in the entire United States.

Alaska-Republican
New Mexico-Democrat
Nevada-Democrat.

Ricardoh December 4, 2019 - 10:50 AM - 10:50 AM

Rob is that your position other states have a higher crime rate? Like what Illinois or Maryland? I guess that makes everything OK. Google the site “LA Homicides”. Read the murder report of the Chicago Sun Times. We seem to have stolen packages and a high homicide rate. We also have group thefts in small and large stores. We have stolen trucks gaining entry to jewelry stores by bashing the front of the store with the rear of the truck. We have gang killings.
Don’t settle for anything. We should put up with none of it.

The Fearless Spectator December 4, 2019 - 9:40 AM - 9:40 AM

So much for moving to the mountains to avoid crime. Some folks up there refer to Bay Area residents as “Flatlanders”. There is sort of a hierarchy based on elevation. Looks like the mountains just got a little flatter, too bad.

Rob December 4, 2019 - 9:44 AM - 9:44 AM

Given that California has by far the largest population we would need to see the number of packages stolen per 100,000 people for a real comparison.

CA may still be higher but at least we would a real statistic to look at.

Sick of it December 4, 2019 - 10:12 AM - 10:12 AM

This comment brought to you by kool aide. Anyone that has lived here long enough has seen the quality of life go down and crime go up. Look at all the stacked numbers you want to. The reality is it is getting bad and our idiots in office are making it worse

The Observer December 4, 2019 - 10:31 AM - 10:31 AM

San Francisco has the highest rate of package thefts at 24 incidents per 1000 people. Of course that accounts only for thefts that are reported.
https://www.wltz.com/2019/12/01/cities-with-the-most-holiday-porch-pirates/

Ricardoh December 4, 2019 - 11:41 AM - 11:41 AM

Rob this is not a comparison this is about real crime in our neighborhoods. Would it make you feel better if your car was stolen but more cars are stolen in Nevada. You make no sense.

chuckie the troll December 4, 2019 - 4:03 PM - 4:03 PM

I would never believe a Rob-er…

The fact is that when you lower the punishment for theft and burglary down from a Felony to a misdemeanor, more of these crimes will occur and fewer will be reported (because the Police and courts will do nothing).

John P December 4, 2019 - 9:58 AM - 9:58 AM

Severe punishment would probably help slow it down. I like the idea of public caning.

Ricardoh December 4, 2019 - 11:50 AM - 11:50 AM

I would like to see caning and public stocks. These people are despicable and they deserve everything they can get. Every year the quality of life for the public goes down because of liberal, PC do nothing leftists.

Ranchgirl December 4, 2019 - 10:04 AM - 10:04 AM

There’s always the things stolen by the people processing the packages. Most postal workers will tell you it happens all the time, with seasonal and regular employees. I just had a package show as delivered by fedex that never left the truck. Because I caught it right away, the package was found and delivered. It was open and all the paperwork from inside was missing. I absolutely believe it was the driver.

Anon December 4, 2019 - 10:09 AM - 10:09 AM

Just remember, if a “criminal” does get arrested……Hopefully they do not FEEL “disrespected” because that will be their get out of trouble card.

Alarm CCTV Edge December 4, 2019 - 10:14 AM - 10:14 AM

I’m afraid the only real solution to the crime problem in California is simply to “not be robbed”. This video shows one of our clients experiencing a “smash & grab” style theft. Clearly over the “$950” felony mark. No charges were filed.

https://youtu.be/2SzweyJPwM4

Be proactive, and also realize that even with the best video system on the market, your stuff is still gone and won’t be coming back. Also, the thieves will RARELY be prosecuted even if caught red handed.

Be safe out there.

Frank December 4, 2019 - 11:20 AM - 11:20 AM

Rob, the most violent cities in the US are all controlled by democrats, so even in “conservative” states those cities drive up violent crime statistics.

Mark December 4, 2019 - 12:06 PM - 12:06 PM

But we have beautiful Sanctuary Cities.

Jojo Potato December 4, 2019 - 12:15 PM - 12:15 PM

Oh, stop your whining. “I hate shopping”, “the parking is bad”, “I can get a better deal”, blah, blah. How about you get off your couch and go to the store?

TT December 4, 2019 - 12:20 PM - 12:20 PM

It’s basically a right to be able to steal from others according to California. Real cool!

FPN December 4, 2019 - 1:19 PM - 1:19 PM

No packages should be stolen. No one should use our sidewalks as toilets. No one should have to worry about homeless camping out in their yard. My 80 year old mother has a big problem with homeless people. Port Chicago Bart is across the street. Marsh Creek Detention Center drops off inmates once a week at P.C. Bart.

DVC Student December 4, 2019 - 4:09 PM - 4:09 PM

Electrify dummy-packages & leave them on your porch. When someone steals them, they get shocked in their fingertips.

Chicken Little December 4, 2019 - 6:02 PM - 6:02 PM

I hate to break it to you, Babs, but there are a heck of a lot of things that aren’t available from a local brick and mortar store, so they need to be ordered online. How about instead of blaming the victims, we do something about the criminals?

Besides, driving a car around from store to store trying to find everything you need is environmentally irresponsible.

Mika December 4, 2019 - 6:15 PM - 6:15 PM

How them cameras working for you? Is it fun watching your packages stolen and there is nothing you can do about it???

Pacman December 4, 2019 - 6:55 PM - 6:55 PM

There are three fundamental and causal relations explaining this issue:

1) CA has some of the most liberal (vs. “law and order”) judges in the nation at all levels from county courts to the CA State Supreme Court. Oregon is trying hard to earn the #1 spot, but it’s a race.

2) Prop 47 which amazingly passed a public vote in 2014 basically turned most property crimes into the equivalent of a speeding ticket. No jail time, just a “promise to appear” citation. The crooks know the laws better than even the ACLU and only steal within the thresholds of the new dollar amounts. Regrettably, they also know what crimes are now considered, “non-violent” and operate with relative impunity, even when caught. You’d be shocked to see what is now considered “non-violent” under CA law.

3) AB 109 which gave many incarcerated crooks a “get out of jail” card so that Moonbeam could deal with the Obama Justice Dept’s “consent decree” to empty out our overcrowded prisons putting thousands of convicted felons back on the street or dumping them into county jails instead of state prison.

Moonbeam did some of this to thin the inventory in CA Prisons per court order (spearheaded by our good friends at the ACLU). His nephew Gavin is doing it to give felons the right to vote (already in the works) and encouraging them to vote Dem, because, “Dude we got you out of jail. Now it’s payback.”

Perhaps I should add a #4 for Claycord purposes. Our liberal, race-biased DA Becton believes that our local criminals are misunderstood and need help rather than punishment. Scores of prosecutors are fleeing our DA’s office due to a lack of pursuing meaningful prosecution. Of note recently where the Orinda AirBnB suspects were released and charges dropped pending “further investigation.” When the DA is not working hand in hand with our CCCSO Sheriff, you have got to pause and ask why.

Cher December 4, 2019 - 10:51 PM - 10:51 PM

(1) You “law and order” people sure dont like the constitution these days…
(2) They dont know how much a box is worth so your theory of them stealing up to a certain value is completely false and many package thefts ARE prosecuted because of the values being higher than you might be assuming..
(3) People are in jail for smoking weed. There are things that are even criminal offenses anymore that people are serving hard time for. YOU are paying over $100,000 a YEAR for every prisoner. Maybe you would like to give that guy that has been locked up for 20 years for weed another chance? I can tell you, having met some of them, YOU are the one we are afraid of not them.
(4) HAHAHA Scores of DA’s FLEEING!!! Yeah right. THAT’S not even happening. Are you friends with the last DA that stole from his campaign funds and got run out of town on a broom? [Mr. Law and Order- that’s the CORRUPTION she is replacing.] Or how about the Elections Office Official that stole even MORE money??? There’s not enough poor administration and thieves within it to get your ire?? Of course not. They need to be women, black, or some other group to get you to rant for multiple paragraphs…PS there is no reason why they shouldn’t vote. I realize your pleasure is to strip people of every dignity that exists, access to jobs, finances, housing, food, make sure they are homeless and stealing so they end up back in jail. Its a republican thing.

Lambie December 4, 2019 - 9:24 PM - 9:24 PM

Do most criminals actually vote?

The Fearless Spectator December 4, 2019 - 10:07 PM - 10:07 PM

Voter registration documents are included in their early release paperwork.

Gittyup December 4, 2019 - 10:34 PM - 10:34 PM

“… driving a car around from store to store trying to find everything you need is environmentally irresponsible.” That argument is completely bogus. Instead of you driving around to get the stuff, we now have huge UPS, Amazon Prime, two different sizes of FedEx trucks — big and bigger — and, any number of other unmarked delivery vehicles daily traveling up and down the residential streets creating a worse environmental disaster. And, now we’ve also got food delivery. I say it’s outright generational laziness.

Chicken Little December 5, 2019 - 4:11 AM - 4:11 AM

Except that one delivery truck (which is often LPG-powered) delivers hundreds of packages, potentially saving an equal number of trips in personal vehicles. Kinda like public transportation being more efficient than driving individual vehicles, even though a bus may pollute more than a Prius.

Justifiable anger December 5, 2019 - 10:33 AM - 10:33 AM

In light of California’s penchant for encouraging crime, I’d like to see:
A castle doctrine, also known as a castle law or a defense of habitation law, is a legal doctrine that designates a person’s abode or any legally occupied place (for example, a vehicle or home) as a place in which that person has protections and immunities permitting one, in certain circumstances, to use force (up to and including deadly force) to defend oneself against an intruder, free from legal prosecution for the consequences of the force used. The term is most commonly used in the United States, though many other countries (see below) invoke comparable principles in their laws.

The states with strong castle doctrine or stand your ground laws, include: Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Washington. If you notice, California is not listed as one of the states with a “strong castle doctrine” law.

The Mamba December 5, 2019 - 2:51 PM - 2:51 PM

Anyone else daydream about catching someone in the act?

james December 5, 2019 - 6:09 PM - 6:09 PM

Knowing the ingenuity of Americans,I’m surprised that nobody’s booby trapped one with something that injures the package opener.

nytemuvr December 5, 2019 - 7:11 PM - 7:11 PM

@james… Ask Wile E. Coyote about that.
