State Attorney General Sues Juul For Allegedly Selling To Youth, Failing To Warn Of Health Risks

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra sued Juul Labs Inc. on Monday, alleging that the e-cigarette maker illegally sold its products to underage youth and failed to warn of health risks.

The civil lawsuit seeks a court injunction and fines against San Francisco-based Juul. It alleges the company “has engaged in a systematic campaign to target underage California residents,” resulting in allegedly
devastating consequences of youth addiction and health problems.

Juul spokesman Austin Finan said the company had not yet seen the lawsuit, but said the company is seeking to work with public health and law enforcement officials to combat underage use, and has a goal of helping adult smokers stop using conventional cigarettes.

“We do not intend to attract underage users,” Finan said.

Becerra noted in a statement that 42 deaths and 2,172 cases of lung injury nationwide have been associated with e-cigarette or vaping product use. Four of the reported deaths were in California.

Why only JUUL Labs?

Aren’t there other e-cigarette/ vaping companies doing the same?

Juul has 70% market share for starts. They spend more on advertising then the rest of the industry combined. So they are low hanging fruit

Imagine a 17 y/o teenager needing a double lung transplant & have to be on anti-rejection drugs for the rest of his life & his immune system will be suppressed for life.

He hasn’t even started life yet.

That’s awful, but I’m not sure how it’s JUUL’s fault? Funny how people think that 17-year olds are too immature to be responsible for decisions about things that affect their health, but then they think 16-year olds should be allowed to vote.

How do you know it’s a “he”? How sexist.

DVC Student November 19, 2019 - 7:32 PM - 7:32 PM

Bob Wiley – When I looked at “his” picture from “his” hospital bed & saw “his” chest with no Tits, I determined “he” was not a chick.

But who knows these days.

Can I nominate this for this best reply to a post for 2019?

“…& saw “his” chest with no Tits, I determined “he” was not a chick.”

ROFL!

I’m not going to admit I laughed out loud at that.

This is just another money grab by Corruptifornia’s AG. He’d sue his own mother if he could get money out of her!

42 people in total have died from vaping – ban it.

1300 people die from cigarettes EVERY DAY – no problem here.

More importantly, millions have used vaping to wean off cigarettes. Back to cigarettes they go.

Rob November 19, 2019 - 5:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Plenty of folks have problems with tobacco – hell I would support banning it but that simply isn’t a reality.

Just because tobacco is entrenched does not mean that therefore we can’t do anything about other products that new…

Or do you believe that if one thing is legal and kills more people than something new – then we just have to allow literally everything else?

Jim November 19, 2019 - 9:45 PM - 9:45 PM

Personally, I think all drugs should be legal or at least decriminalized. I don’t think adults should be telling other adults that they’re not allowed to ingest something because it’s dangerous. Lots of things are dangerous like motorcycles or skydiving but people are allowed to do those things. Why not drugs?

ZZ November 19, 2019 - 6:47 PM - 6:47 PM

So are they going to sue tobacco companies too? Million more have died from that habit. How about millions that have died from alcohol related diseases and car accidents?
Just another liberal feel good move.

If you are dumb enough to smoke or vape, you get what you get. Process of natural selection.

In today’s society you see youngsters with credit cards charging away in person and online. So why are we surprised by them buying things they should not. Parents are a large part of the problem as they don’t want their children to be “left out” and because Johnny and Susie have credit cards, cell phones and cars we must automatically give that to our children.
We reap what we sow.
A bit more discipline and self control by all would go a long way. Kids will try anything, as we did. Part of growing up process.

Good step!! About time he did something of value beside hiding behind lawsuit against the Federal Government!

Local Lady November 20, 2019 - 9:31 AM - 9:31 AM

Why is Juul being singled out? Have any deaths been specifically tied to their product? Juul is the only company I know of that has taken positive steps to get kids off of cigarettes and vaping.

Local Lady November 20, 2019 - 9:35 AM - 9:35 AM

Just an aside her, but people are also vaping marijuana. Is Mr. Becerra planning on cracking down on that too?

ChampagneCalodemon November 21, 2019 - 1:22 AM - 1:22 AM

California’s politicians could not give a rat’s ass about public health, all they are worried about is money.
As a liberal society we are quick to point fingers at others, but we fail to self reflect snd look at the nigher picture.
We’re projecting poor parenting on businesses; parents should be aware of what their children are up to. But these liberal passive parents can’t even do that; instead they’re gonna blame Juul. If you’re going to make adult choices youre going to have adult consequences I grew up around a family who smokes cannabis and tobacco and I have never cared for either; for me those things were accessible, and just because it was cool or accessible didn’t mean i wanted to partake.

The other thing is we never talk about how usage of nicotine (or other substances) affects our brain. It’s a mild stimulant it makes us feel good it changes the brain. Instead we say it’s bad for you dont do it. That creates a seduction. Instead if we notified pupils and said yes. The problem with this is it will make you feel good, but at the expense of…
