Man Murdered On BART Train In Alameda County

A man in his 40s was fatally stabbed in a fight on a BART train in Hayward early Tuesday afternoon, transit agency Police Chief Ed Alvarez said.

Speaking at a news conference at BART’s South Hayward station at 4 p.m., Alvarez said the fight and stabbing occurred on a Warm Springs-bound train as it approached the South Hayward station at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Alvarez said officers who responded to the stabbing at the South Hayward station found the victim suffering from stab wounds and a short time later he was pronounced dead.

Alvarez said officers were able to get a good description of the suspect, who’s also a man in his 40s, from witnesses and were able to arrest him on Tennyson Road about a block away from the station.

Alvarez said he doesn’t yet know if the victim and suspect knew each other or why the fight started.

The South Hayward station has been closed since 1 p.m. and BART spokesman Chris Filippi said there’s no firm estimate about when it will reopen, although he said BART hopes it can be reopened “within the next few hours.”

Filippi said trains are single-tracking through the station without stopping, which he said has prompted “major delays” in the BART system.

BART officials said the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District bus system is providing mutual aid on bus No. 99 for service between Hayward, South Hayward and Union City.

I will bet the killer is also a fare gate jumper, and the victim would be alive today if the BART board did their job.

Robert Taylor November 19, 2019 - 10:21 PM - 10:21 PM

How exactly is the BART board supposed to stop one passenger from fighting with another! No one knows all the facts yet!
Besides, even if he was, that has nothing to do with what happened.

Always Right November 19, 2019 - 11:05 PM - 11:05 PM

Turns out I was right…as always. Unfortunately.

The killer should never have been allowed on BART. Blood on the hands of BART directors who allow fare jumping and vagrants traveling and harassing honest passengers.

Anon November 19, 2019 - 5:50 PM - 5:50 PM

Hopefully the Arresting Officers didn’t Disrespect the Suspect.

John P November 19, 2019 - 8:44 PM - 8:44 PM

They didn’t, but the BART GM apologized to him for the disruption of his life caused by the arrest.

Taxpayer November 20, 2019 - 7:28 AM - 7:28 AM

I bet the BART officers racially profiled the suspect too.

RSD November 19, 2019 - 6:10 PM - 6:10 PM

All knifes should be banned. very dangerous.

Bob Foo November 20, 2019 - 12:50 AM - 12:50 AM

Good point. Ban fingers too, plenty of people have murdered one another by strangling with their bare hands.

Rollo Tomasi November 20, 2019 - 8:54 AM - 8:54 AM

@J:

Was that English?

ConcordDad November 19, 2019 - 7:48 PM - 7:48 PM

I hope people don’t really fall for the information that BART puts out to the public. A man was trying to take another passengers shoes and a guy intervened and was stabbed and killed for it. This is why Board of Directors like Janice Li need to go so BART can start taking a stand against criminals and violence on BART. We have a few people on this BOARD that don’t want BART to seem Hardened by putting in stronger gates or having a major police presence because that sends the wrong message. Nothing will change until the public gets outraged and takes a stand. The employees have given up and they are scared just like the passengers, if employees say anything they are reprimanded. I know because a family member of mine works for BART and it’s way worse than people even know.

Googlar November 20, 2019 - 3:33 AM - 3:33 AM

Jane, it is because citizens have been castrated from a way to defend themselves and criminals run around like it is a playground.

People with jobs, cars, homes, families, and responsibilities are afraid to protect themselves and others because when they do the book will be thrown at them by criminal judges, allthewhile criminals hop in and out of jail and carry the weapons we are not allowed to hold.

TraumaRx November 19, 2019 - 8:35 PM - 8:35 PM

Bart officers need to actually patrol inside the trains instead of driving around jumping from station to station. What a waste of our tax dollars.

If respectable law abiding citizens could carry a gun for protection BART would be a lot safer. These criminals prey on people, knowing damn well they’re unarmed. BART would become much safer through attrition.

Rob November 20, 2019 - 7:50 AM - 7:50 AM

Given what I see at the gun range – no – I really would prefer folks not be shooting in an enclosed area. Hell – at the gun range plenty of those people can barely hit the target ay all – and those are the people who are practicing.

The last thing I want is folks who have a gun and may have not practiced in the last 6 months – if at all – opening fire in a chaotic situation inside a BART train.

In a study with Police in the NYPD under 7 yards, the cops hit the target 37% of the time – that means about 60% of the shots went somewhere else – and those are people who are actually trained…

Rollo Tomasi November 20, 2019 - 8:57 AM - 8:57 AM

Rob, I guess as long as it’s not you getting stabbed it’s all good?

LAC November 20, 2019 - 1:55 PM - 1:55 PM

I’ve heard the victim was stabbed with his own knife, that was taken and used against him. Could have been many more victims had that been a gun and not a knife.

TPC November 19, 2019 - 10:20 PM - 10:20 PM

Thankful that I don’t need to rely on public transportation. I grew up in Concord and remember what a big deal it was when BART was being built. May as well ride the subway in NYC. BART is dirty and unsafe. I remember coming home from a concert at the Coliseum late one night and accidentally got off in West Oakland. Not a fun place to be after midnight.

KittyWins November 20, 2019 - 12:10 PM - 12:10 PM

Yay for the privilege you have that you don’t need to rely on public transportation. Millions of others do not have the privilege you have. Also, what’s your point about mentioning the subway in NYC? It’s efficient, runs all day/night, and results in many people not needing cars.

Me November 19, 2019 - 10:36 PM - 10:36 PM

There need to be officers on every train. When the doors shut you are trapped, sometimes with people who try to harm you. One time I caught a guy jerking off behind me. It was on a train from one of the far off stops and we were the only people in that car. I thought it was weird with a whole empty train, he sat behind me. I found at why and left that car quickly.Years ago, I said that they should have elevator attendants. It would give people jobs and make the elevator safe. They finally did and miracle upon miracles it works. More security on the actual train would be brilliant.

Two stories on Claycord over the last two weeks about the BART patron detained for eating a sandwich on the Pleasant Hill platform garnered 244 comments by Claycord readers.

A guy gets murdered on BART and Claycord readers are kinda “so what?” Only 15 comments so far.

SF oh November 20, 2019 - 12:34 PM - 12:34 PM

@Itsme- No, it’s not that Claycord readers think, “so what”, about this tragedy. It’s just the feelings or anger and disgust that this has happened to an innocent person when Bart has been told over and over to do something about the crime on their trains. They’ve been told a million times to stop the fare evaders, get the homeless off their trains, get more security …… They won’t do it ‘cuz they have to be so freakin’ PC and not offend any ‘effin mental case who whines about having his feelings hurt by their policies. So now Bart will pay off the Sandwich A-hole who got his itty-bitty feelings hurt, but a man is dead and they’ll do nothing! It’s not the Claycord readers who say “so what” …. We (I think I can speak for all) feel horrible about this. It’s Bart management who say, “so what”, and continue to allow these things to happen.

Jimyjam November 20, 2019 - 1:51 PM - 1:51 PM

Also, since he wasnt eating a sandwich, did they let him go so he could shoot up in the elevator which seems ok?

Jeff November 20, 2019 - 7:35 AM - 7:35 AM

You people live in the Bay Area, where soft on crime liberals always get elected. Why should you expect anything different on BART that is not happening on your streets. Me, I’m always prepared. 108RS

Rob November 20, 2019 - 7:47 AM - 7:47 AM

If only everyone had been properly armed with a gun they could have opened fire in an enclosed vehicle and hopefully stopped the stabbing. Then, of course, there would just be a lot of gunshot victims. But nothings perfect…

Rollo Tomasi November 20, 2019 - 8:59 AM - 8:59 AM

If you’re that inept we’re all thankful you don’t carry.

RANDOM TASK November 20, 2019 - 8:19 AM - 8:19 AM

in lighter news

BART MANAGMENT
APPOLOGIZES TO THE SUSPECT

then asks police to stop tracking him down and infringing on his right to escape and self rehabilitate himself

sanctuary ….the do anything you want state
as long as it is criminal or illegal

Bill Cutting November 20, 2019 - 8:22 AM - 8:22 AM

Rob maybe some can’t aim at your range but most people with some experience can aim and shoot pretty well from my experience at ranges. What you’re talking about is crossfire sure that might happen but I highly doubt the person would have to discharge their weapon once the perpetrator saw a 45 caliber hand cannon pointed at them. I agree with the other posters stop neutering us let us defend ourselves.

RANDOM TASK November 20, 2019 - 8:22 AM - 8:22 AM

my post script did not show up

I grieve for every family subject to bart violence

there should be way more security
this should not happen on a mass transit system

ManBearPig November 20, 2019 - 9:28 AM - 9:28 AM

The guy tries to do the right thing and is killed for it. Sadly, the family will not receive justice from the legal system.

Anyone remember who Bernie Goetz is? Bart is turning into lawless anything goes cattle cars. If Bart refuses to protect their riders….

Joe November 20, 2019 - 9:31 AM - 9:31 AM

Another fine example of why law-abiding citizens should be allowed to arm themselves. I’d rather be judged by 12 rather than allow some lunatic to kill me just for being on the train.

WhyNot November 20, 2019 - 12:16 PM - 12:16 PM

Just do it. First time your caught carrying concealed is a misdemeanor. If you shoot someone in self defense likely you will not be prosecuted.

anon November 20, 2019 - 9:53 AM - 9:53 AM

Shame on Bart for not learning from the past and taking measures to keep vagrants off the trains. When will the excuses stop and action be taken. RIP to the brave man that gave his life to help someone in need.

Old-school guy November 20, 2019 - 11:43 AM - 11:43 AM

I now feel more safe on NYC subway than on BART. 20 years ago, I never thought I’d say this.

Mom-in-Concord November 20, 2019 - 4:35 PM - 4:35 PM

So true… The NYC subway is cleaner, safer and better-run than BART. Way cheaper, too! You can go anywhere for $2.75. Who would have ever thought we’d be saying this!? Actually, Manhattan as a whole feels cleaner and safer than SF. And I’m a native SF girl. So sad.

justsaying November 20, 2019 - 1:23 PM - 1:23 PM

these are the kind of crimes bart police needs to protect the public from, eating a sandwich didnt harm anyone.. PRIORITIES

it snot up to you or anyone else to decide which ones they want or deem to abide by
